The Lobster Lake Bandits: Mystery at Moosehead

A Maine Mystery

"This book will make you want to visit Maine."
"Suspense. Romance. Mystery. This book has it all."

When Sarah, a travel writer from New York City, gets sent to Maine on assignment, she's reluctant to go. The Moosehead Lake region is a place of only bad memories for her. What she discovers about herself, her family, and a Boston crime is so much larger than a story for a magazine article.

Three generations of the Parker family had grown up in the woods near Maine’s Lobster Lake. The Parkers knew the roads, trails, and lakes around their cabin better than anyone, except maybe the local game warden. It was always a peaceful and safe place. That all changed the year the oddly dressed stranger stalked their woods, and the bandits caused some serious trouble.

The Lobster Lake Bandits, is a very compelling read. I particularly enjoyed it because the story is set in the woods and on the waters north of Greenville, Maine and Moosehead Lake, a place I know very well.

I raced through the book in a weekend eager to find out how the book ended!"

Tommy Carbone was born in Brooklyn, New York where he spent his childhood years roaming the streets, playing pinball, eating slices, and playing slap. The NYC blackout of 1977 sparked his interest in electricity, which led him to study electrical engineering.

He now gets inspired and writes from a one-room, uninsulated cabin, in the Maine woods where moose outnumber people three to one. This is a verifiable fact, as Tommy has been chased by them more times than he was mugged in NYC.

This is the second book I've read by this author. I enjoy his writing style and how he weaves historical facts into his writing. This book, a novel, is set in Maine, which is interesting because he ends up moving from New York City to Maine. The book starts out in the present, well the present of the 1980s, then the story segues to a flashback where a mystery takes place in the north woods. It is very well written, I felt like I was watching a movie with all the great descriptions. It's not a murder mystery, and there is no killing, or things like that. It is very wholesome fun and would be good for young readers and adults alike. I am interested in visiting the places mentioned in the book.

The Lobster Lake Bandits is a wonderful mystery. This novel pulls you in very from the very begining. The images that allow you to feel as if you are in the setting of Maine. I have never experienced Maine, and this allows to me feel as if I am experiencing it. In turn, I feel as if this is due to the wonderful detail and thought put into the novel. Therefore, I enjoyed the character development that is present throughout the story allowing for a connection with the characters. The details are great and can demonstrate that the author experienced it first hand or took the time to do his research about this historical event.

I enjoyed reading this novel from start to finish. The author made me feel right at home in the woods of Northern New England. The setting was authentic and the character development was excellent. That combined with a well developed mystery had me hooked.

I'd highly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a great mystery.

This book is absolutely a love letter to the north woods of Maine and definitely made me want to visit. I really liked the way Carbone wove the various timelines together, and how the flashbacks set up more of the story to come in the rest of the series. I was expecting a bit more of the more recent timeline (set in the 80s) with Joe and Sarah, but their relationship will be explored further as the series continues, which gives me something to look forward to.

If I had to choose one word to describe this book it would be layers: layers of mystery, layers of timelines, and layers of relationship. Each layer builds on the ones previous to create a rich story full of interesting secondary characters, likeable main characters, and a location that is a character in itself.

This book was not what I was expecting, and thus my experience of it was not as good as it could have been. I struggled to lay aside my expectations and just relax into the story it was. Once I did, I did enjoy it.
The cover referred to it as a "mystery thriller". I was expecting a suspenseful, mystery. I was further disoriented by the timing. It was published in 2018 but opens in the 1980s then back flashes to events set in 1950's. Furthermore, the description makes it sounds like the event where Joe and Sarah first met as teenagers had a significant link to the "thrilling mystery". Actually, the events were merely adjacent.
So that is not what this book was about.
It was good story-telling. It was very readable. It told the events of that year in a way that I could imagine a friend or family member describing events from their childhood. There was a bit of mystery and a hint of romance. It gave insight into life in northern Maine and the culture of family lake camps - the Maine family version, not the wealthy out-of-staters version. Overall it was a pleasant reading experience.

I actually have had this book for a while now. It is a great read. Tommy Carbone has a natural writing sense that pulls the reader quickly into the story. The characters and the landscape are so realistic that it is easy to latch on and be a part of the mystery and adventure of this story. I have highly recommended this book to friends and family. If you enjoy mysteries, natural settings (aka Eastern woods and beautiful lakes), and interesting characters you will enjoy this book.

Thank you readers of,"The Lobster Lake Bandits - Mystery at Moosehead."
I wrote this book to spotlight our piece of the Maine north woods. There are many books written about the coast of Maine, but not as many highlighting our mountains, ponds, and lakes. So come along on the adventure in the Moosehead Lake region - an area of beauty and in this case a mystery that needs to be explored.

What an enjoyable story! I appreciate the amount of research the author invested in this book - each page led to greater detail about the north woods of Maine and kept me intrigued the entire way.

While the relationship between Joe and Sarah is surface level, this story is more than just that. It takes readers back in time, connecting with generations of Joe's family and introducing many relatable secondary characters. I also loved the maps, sketches and photos throughout the book! An unexpected touch that proved an excellent reference as the mystery unraveled.

For those that love historical fiction with a little mystery and romance - you need this book! Grab a cozy blanket, cup of hot cocoa and get ready for an adventure in the great outdoors.
