The life of an indie author is great fun; but it's also very difficult and occasionally very stressful. Pauline Wiles understands this very well. Her overview of the issues faced by indies today is so comprehensive that at times I felt she was reading my mind. But she doesn't only identify the problems, she provides lots of practical tips for how to overcome them. Her hint about file structures is so useful, it is worth buying the book just for that. And as for her list of things to stop worrying about...it is brilliant. So much of this book is common sense, but we all know that sense is anything but common. I have read the whole book through once, and I know I will reread it, work through the self-reflections, and then dip in to specific chapters from time to time. Highly recommended.

In Indie With Ease: Practical ways to conquer stress, boost productivity, and love your self-publishing career, Pauline Wiles tackles the subject with aplomb, choosing to focus on the lonelier path of the indie author.

Indie With Ease is a thorough effort, covering topics including: finding your ideal time to write, finding a support network among fellow writers, choosing which parts of the process to outsource, and how to track your writing output.

But Indie With Ease isn’t just for beginners. Wiles provides plenty of journaling prompts to get seasoned indies thinking if they’d like to kick their writing up a notch. Or if they feel something isn’t working as well as it could. Each chapter ends with three or four of these prompts. And you’ll get more out of the material by reflecting on it through such prompts.

The chapters are also self-contained. The beginner can work through it in a sequential fashion as a form of self-study course. And more experienced indies can dip in and out, consulting the chapters most applicable to them.

Wiles also provides a host of bonus downloads. You can try out trackers, charts, and other goodies to help you put this material into practice. Wondering why these trackers are so handy? You can’t begin to pinpoint what will work best for you until you test new strategies. By keeping track of your output for each strategy, you can better determine which is the right one for you.

Wiles has a smooth, encouraging writing style and each chapter feels like a brand new pep talk. While Wiles doesn’t sugar coat the indie author path, she’s still positive about its many foibles. You’ll come away from this book with a whole host of things to try to kickstart your indie author career. So if you can’t afford a writing coach, Indie With Ease might be the next best thing.

How’s your life as an indie author? Exciting, invigorating, inspiring, the best thing you’ve ever done? Or not so much? What do you do when the joy of publishing your first book fades and the daily grind of write, edit, blog, social media, writer’s block, ETC! takes over? Do you buy yet another how-to book to read when you can’t sleep at night?

I have a suggestion- read Pauline Wile’s book. Her kind, thoughtful, down-to-earth support will help you build the foundation you need for an enjoyable long-term indie author career. As she tells us, “This is a guide to your well-being, productivity and serenity as an indie author.”

Her advice is the breath of fresh air you need to thrive as an indie author. “In my six years in the publishing business I’ve learned to set realistic expectation, focus doggedly on only the important tasks, and take care of my energy, creativity and morale. Good advice for everyone, really.

I highlighted so much of this book as I read it- so many gems here- but what really helped me was learning about the Swedish Concept of Lagom. I also liked that the author recommended meditation. I agree with her- add the skill of paying attention.

Each chapter hones in on a specific topic such as “Know Yourself”, “Nurture Your Creativity”, “Build Your Tribe.” Topics in each chapter are succinct, with practical tips. Advice from other current authors is included. At the end of each chapter is a summary, and self-reflection questions. The book finishes with extensive bonus material.

I know I will keep referring to this guide for encouragement and knowledge. Authors, I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

Thanks to the author for an ARC. This is my honest review.

If you're looking for a step-by-step "how to" book for becoming an indie author, this isn't that book. It's even better, since it's more of a "how to survive/thrive" as an indie author book. Even having already published several books myself, this book came along right when I *needed* it. I was thinking of quitting writing - because it can honestly be overwhelming sometimes and feel like there's very little reward for all your time and effort - but this book reminded me of how to find the joys of self-publishing.

Whether you're a newbie or an old-hand, I'm certain you'll find lots of helpful advice in this book and be highlighting like crazy. Some of my favorite chapters include the one on nurturing your creativity (the simple way that Wiles explains meditation makes me think I might actually be able to stick with it this time!), and the final chapter on keeping your spirits up. I wish I'd had this book when I first started out - the chapter on "Things Not to Worry About" is so spot-on!

Even if you're not sure whether you want to try to go the traditional route or self-publish, this book will be very helpful to you. The indie path isn't for everyone and this book will help you assess that.

So give it a try - I'm sure you'll also find that the book is jam-packed with helpful info!

Being an independent author is not an easy feat. You have to juggle many tasks and often work with freelancers to get things like your cover and editing done. You put your book out there, and you may or may not see the sales that you’d hoped for. This book, written by a successful independent author, is meant to support you in your indie journey by giving you the inside scoop on a variety of topics, from self-care to productivity to marketing. Most importantly, the author wants you to help you have the correct mindset so you don't stress out about the process or lose the desire to keep writing.

To this end, she shares information and insights in this book on a wide range of topics. She first looks at understanding your writing personality, time constraints, and other issues that have strictly to do with you. She's a firm believer in self-care, and she encourages you to be realistic about what is achievable, both professionally and personally. Chapters in the middle section of the book range from organizing your time to the minimum viable needs of your book to the use of social media (or not). It's not really meant as a how-to; you're not going to get specific Instructions about how to do most of what she talks about. Instead, she brings up what she believes is essential to know about each topic. You learn not only from her; she quotes several other independent authors directly as well as linking to websites and suggesting books to read. Each chapter ends with a set of questions to get you thinking about how the chapter topic relates to you and your writing.

The book has one major drawback that I found frustrating. There is no written or clickable table of contents. I did receive a review copy, so I double-checked at Amazon to see if that version had one. It did not. There is so much useful information here that I would like to be able to get back quickly to a particular topic when I have a question or want advice. Too, as a reader, I always go over the table of contents of a nonfiction book before I start to read it so I know what to look forward to. I feel like it helps me organize my mind so that I am better able to assimilate the knowledge in the book.

This book is chock-full of information and support that will help you if you choose to become an independent author.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Wiles shows a true insight into the challenges a writer is faced with and offers practical ways to conquer them. I found the structure of the chapters to be easy to follow and well organized. Honestly, having been a writer for some years now, I could relate quite a bit to the common pitfalls we all fall into from time to time. Heavy emphasis is given to proper time management and common sense solutions. While most of this should be self-evident, it's amazing how we tend to not realize a problem until someone else helps us to notice it.
Overall, the message for indie authors is both realistic and positive. I'd, of course, recommend this to writers who are entering the stage of self-publishing, but also to new authors who are just beginning to hone their skills in general. This book was obviously written from personal experience and that relatability makes the advice given much more reassuring and warm. It's a nice resource I'll likely reference when needed.

For writer's early in their author career, authors already independently published suffering from fatigue, or those who want to enjoy the self-publishing journey, this is the book for you! This offers practical ways to conquer stress, boost productivity, and love your career.

Each chapter addresses specific challenges an author may face. It begins with helping you to know yourself as an author, finding your strengths and weaknesses. I read it from start to finish, which made it a bit harder to get through. It is definitely more suited for an author going straight to where they are having difficulties.

At the end of each chapter, there are questions to help you reflect on what the chapter covered and how you can apply it in your life. I think this is definitely a book every author setting out should have, right next to S.K. Quinn's For Love or Money book.

I received a copy from the author for reviewing purposes. All opinions expressed are my own.

Indie with Ease should be required reading for all self-published authors or writers who are considering self-publishing.

With a friendly and encouraging voice, Pauline Wiles provides invaluable information on how to navigate the self-publishing journey. Indie with Ease is not a how-to manual on the technical side of self-publishing, but rather a guide on how to enjoy the journey and not burn yourself out. Pauline Wiles focuses on self-care, staying organized and boosting your productivity.

This book was a joy to read and I’ve highlighted and bookmarked several sections. I know I’ll be coming back to this book in the future. There’s a wealth of information here and I feel like I’ve just skimmed the surface.

Whether you’re new to self-publishing or you’ve already published a few (or more!) books, Indie with Ease is a wonderful resource and I highly recommend it!

There are many resources for indie authors if they’re looking for how-to advice. Indie With Ease is different. It strives – and succeeds – to offer sound strategies for reducing stress and protecting your creativity and sanity during all phases of self-publishing. With kindness, honesty and a wealth of information, including fantastic bonus downloads for templates and checklists, this book will sit front and center on your indie writing desk.

I received an advance copy from the publisher as I provided some quotes for the project. I receive no compensation for my participation.

This is no ordinary book to help authors build their skills.
Pauline Wiles takes an unusual, and little used path.
She advocates strongly for writing what you love, and for
adding self care to the writer's toolbox. Her advice is honest
(sometimes brutally honest), and aimed mostly at writers
who want to publish their work outside of the traditional
scene. However I think it can be applied to any writer,
especially the part about self care. The best quality work
does not happen when a person is burned out.

I really enjoyed how the author used a lot of anecdotes (including mine!) to help you get from being a writer to being a published author. It's hard, but Pauline has gathered loads of tips to make it easy to get your work out there for others to enjoy. I learned some really helpful techniques for independent publishing -- it's changing and improving constantly, so this book will be very helpful for the independent author.

Part 2: Recommendation

Indie with Ease by Pauline Wiles is such a pleasant, enjoyable read despite it being a nonfiction book. I just love the author's voice throughout the book. She sounds like a really dear friend. Every section of the book, Introduction and Conclusion included, are all very well thought out, well researched and very well-written. This book is quite impressive. I especially love and appreciate how quotes from other writers are very well blended into the text and transitions well. I also truly enjoyed the self-reflection questions as they were well-thought out and I can see these reflections be quite helpful to indie authors especially if they (authors) dig down and honestly answer the questions. These self-reflection questions should prove to be enlightening.

I have to say though that the .Mobi file I received from the author had a few negatives about it in the sense that there was a lot of conversion errors like these: forg.< (for), dp w Toesn't (doesn't), Goop fgle (Google), knor.< knor., Soh f T buying (So buying), new/> < (If), ad C livocates (advocates), a Cournd (and), Fla C"juttering (Flattering), I JJJJp prowould (I would), RRRR dunder (under), [res>I, a ZZZZZ rnd (and), tr ZZZZZy eat (treat), mindful ZZZZZdness (mindfulness), yo jjjjjjme re your f eaur head (your head), yo sso ntuitiur (your), f s un Trom (from), {e ce my, {ts Treading (reading), Decem {capital ber (December), in zzzzzzzz="19" on (andaimidie (indie), webs">ites (websites), reviehas Twed (reviewed), experhey tiencing (experiencing), goin Wh olo, g (going), pl ained (pained), Vanl w gn="derkam (Vanderkam), some T of these (some of these), readerk, e in rs (readers), thefut Ty (they), /div> (fi. Aside from that, there seems to be 3 sections that were missing text particularly in the section titled Your Support Network, first paragraph; as well as in the 5th paragraph of the section titled Rank These Achievements; and another paragraph is missing in the paragraph that starts off as Multiple s ming in the section titled What are Your Financial Expectations.

Despite these conversion errors, my enjoyment and appreciation of the book was greater mainly because this book is full of really good, practical tips and sound advice for the well-being of the indie writer that is easily implemented and has been advocated by numerous other indie authors like Joanna Penn, Mark Dawson, Nick Stephenson, Derek Murphy, to name a few.

I have to be clear though that this book is not a Writing How-To Guide nor is it a Self-Publishing Step-by-Step Guide. It is also not a book on Creativity though it does lightly touch on the subject. This book is more like a tips and tricks to staying organized, productive, sane, calm, inspired and happy in your indie writing career and by following the author's advice, you can avoid feeling stressed out, overwhelmed and uninspired.

Indie with Ease should definitely be in every writer's reference book shelf that's within reach of their writing desk.
