In life there are choices…

Spinster Iris Hedley was once the darling of the ton until her father lost his fortune through an illness of the mind. Reduced to living as a penniless guest while her father rots in debtors prison, she’s determined to escape unscrupulous robbers who’ve set her to spy on the ton by the only means possible—by becoming a wealthy mans mistress. Unfortunately for Iris, her proper upbringing never covered intimacy or seduction so she asks the one man she trusts for help with private lessons in the duties of a mistress.

…in love there is but one

Martin Andrews, the Earl of Louth, may have a soft spot for tiny Iris Hedley, especially after her father fled London with a horde of debtors nipping at his heels. Her request for lessons in seduction leaves him reeling and although tempted it’s an offer he must refuse for her own good. Convinced she’s headed for heartbreak, he sets out to prove that surrendering to wicked pleasure is not worth the sacrifice of her future only to discover that her problems are more complicated than his own.

An Improper Proposal is the sixth book in the Distinguished Rogues Series by Heather Boyd. It can easily be read as a stand alone book, but after reading it, I am sure you will want to go back to the beginning and read them all.

The story is about Iris Hedley. She was all set to marry, but when her father ended up losing her dowry and all his wealth, she allowed her fiance his freedom to find a wealthy woman because he needed the money. Since then she has been living with a family friend, Esme, and between them they are keeping it a secret that her father is actually in a debtors prison and not abroad as they have told everybody.

Circumstances beyond her control find Iris caught up in criminal activity and the only way she can see out of it is to offer herself as a mistress to a rich man who could become her protector. She is virginal and has no idea about seduction, so decides to ask a man whom she knows she can trust.

Martin Andrews, the Earl of Louth is that man. The Improper Proposal is her proposal to him to teach her what men want from a mistress and to help her practice it!! She knows she can never be a wife to a decent man because of her father and his fall from grace in society, plus she knows a protector won't be damaged if it comes about that her criminal activities are discovered. Not like a husband would be.

You will have to read the book to find out if he agrees to be her tutor and also to know what becomes of Iris and her criminal activities. Her story and that of Martin because he has his secrets too, is a very interesting read. I was made to feel the gamut of emotions throughout the book because there were silly lighthearted moment, heart breaking moments, worrisome moments, this book really has it all. I tried to read it all in one sitting because it's one of those books that you need to know the ending of sooner rather than later. But sadly circumstances got in the way and I had to read the book in two sittings instead of one. I am definitely going to read all the books in the series now that I have been introduced to this series, and I look forward to reviewing them.

The only negative I have about the book is more personal preference than anything else, but when a book is written in regency times and there is so much proper behaviour and gentleness going on, it seems wrong to put in words like 'bum' and 'wanking'. Even if they were said in that time, it just sounds crass and too modern for my liking. Bum should be bottom, and 'wanking' could easily be changed to 'pleasuring'. The settings they were used in didn't require crassness at all. So yes, that is my only negative. Certainly not enough to stop me loving the book and recommending it to all. And definitely not enough to drop my rating from 5 stars :D

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

As some of you may know Heather Boyd is one of my very favorite authors. This lady has talent and every one of her books show it. I am always so anxious to get my hands on her next release that I devour it in no time.

I have had the pleasure of reading three books in the Distinguished Rogues series and I have adored them all. Ms. Boyd has a great voice for writing a historical romance. I found myself completely engrossed in this story from page one. My favorite place to read is the bathtub. While reading this book one night my husband about had to remove this book from my hands.I could NOT put it down. I was too engrossed in Iris and Martin's story to care that it was getting late.

Iris Hedley is fiercely protective of her father and will do anything to help keep him safe. Her father is in a debtors prison with a massive amount of debt that he accumulated. She was from a well to do family and lost all of the comforts of life. She also lost most of her so called "friends". I could not help but feel a connection to this girl. She is strong, very independent and so brave! She lives in fear of something happening to her father in prison. She also fears the nasty people that have forced her to do things she really doesn't want to do. This poor girl has been through so much. Yet in some ways she has a sweet innocence that is adoring.

I loved how her friend Esme stands by her and supports her decisions while trying to lead her in the right direction. Esme is the exact kind of friend that Iris has needed to help her in life. She supports Iris no matter what the situation. She is also very protective of Iris. Every lady needs a wonderful friend in her life. I really enjoyed the bond between Esme and Iris.

Martin Andrews, the Earl of Louth is a gentleman that Iris feels she can ask intimate questions. I have to say I loved some of his reactions to Iris' questions. Marin has no intention of falling for Iris when he sets out to change her mind about leading the life of a mistress. When left alone for long the attraction between these two is quite combustible. Their lessons lead to some steamy scenes. When they try to fight their feelings for each other things keep drawing them together.

Martin's artistic cousin, Whitney lives with him. She is quite the lady. She has a fun sense of humor and also doesn't mind telling everyone exactly what she thinks. I am anxious to see if this spunky lady has a story to tell.

Once again Heather Boyd has created incredibly interesting characters with very fascinating stories to tell. Both Iris and Martin have a few things they need to share with each other. The secrets are revealed as their relationship unfolds. I really enjoyed watching these two get to know each other. Martin's lessons for Iris are fun yet hot.

There is plenty of drama in this story that had me flipping pages quickly. I could not wait to see how Iris was going to find her way out of the messy and dangerous situation she finds herself in. There is some drama, suspense, a little mystery, interesting secrets, some sweet gestures, a nice friends to romance story, and a few steamy scenes. In my book that makes this book perfect!

An Improper Proposal is part of The Distinguished Rogues series. You do not have to have read the previous books in this series first. This series is great read either together or as a stand alone. If you have read the previous books you will find some familiar friends from the previous books visiting at the balls and other functions. That is one of the reasons I love series. I love catching up with old friends to see how they are doing and what they have been up to.

Ms. Boyd never lets me down. Her books are always extremely enjoyable. I can not wait to see what she has in store for us lucky readers next. Whatever it may be I know I will be impatiently awaiting her next release.

I received the opportunity to read this fabulous story so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you on An Improper Proposal.

“An improper Proposal” by Heather Boyd is the 6th installment in “The Distinguished Rogues” series.

When I first saw the cover I really thought about not requesting the book because it looks cheap and trashy, not Regency at all. Sometimes I ask myself why publishers pay for covers like that ….

BUT I asked for it because I liked the plot.

Iris Hedley is a lovely young lady and she cares deeply about her father who rots in debtor’s prison after losing everything. Iris stays with an elderly friend. She thinks a lot about her possibilities and she only sees one option because nobody would marry her without a dowry – becoming a mistress. At the very moment she helps robbers to save her father’s life – she tells them where the safes of the rich and famous are and leaves window latches open.

On the other side is Martin Andrews, the Earl of Louth, who learns within the first pages that his former mistress has died in childbirth and that the baby girl was eventually his. A nameless, motherless babe. She died because the baby was too big. He has no clue how to deal with the babe, what to do.

When Iris asks him for private lessons to become a mistress, it is an offer he should refuse but of course, things get more and more complicated.

Everybody knows that there are heroines and heroines. This one is one of those you have to love. Iris is strong, strong minded, brave and of course a hopeless romantic. She is naïve and of course she doesn’t really know what a mistress does or how often. It was kind of cute how she slowly realized things. The same with Martin – of course he wants to go to bed with an innocent because he likes Iris, the person behind the façade.

I also liked the storyline around her father and the debtor’s prison. It’s something that’s now part in many Regency novels. Nowadays it’s impossible to think of a debtor’s prison but I like the idea because we’d have less troubles …

I think I’ll give another Heather Boyd novel a try … and I hope they decide to create better covers.

Yes, this is a sizzling novel; safe to say it is a bit raunchy but feels like reality of the times. It doesn’t gloss over the morals and attitudes of society by focusing on the simpering debs at the ball. This is about those who are trying to just hang on in society and perhaps even feeling some panic at their perceived downfall. Or some who have learned how to play the game for their own advantage.

I enjoyed this darker regency romance. The characters were brought to life and felt very real. The good guy had his faults and the villain was truly evil. Iris was very lucky when she pursued being a mistress that she encountered Martin who was an honorable man since the ton was full of the dishonorable type. I really like this not-so-varnished view of the era.
I can easily recommend this book to HR fans.

This was quite an interesting read, its a romance that starts of with young lady propositioning a titled man to teach her the art of passion, for she has the idea that becoming a wealthy man's mistress is her only option in life. What ensues is a tale full of secrets kept, love developing and a lot of "lessons" in the drawing room, parlor and such. An Improper Proposal has all the elements of erotic passions unfurled, dangerous secrets revealed and other secondary characters whose own stories a reader will definitely will want to be told. Excellently written, engaging and quite charming historical romance.

So, I read 1-3 in a bundle and enjoyed it, but wasn't convinced (I didn't much like H 3).

I already had #7 for free, so decided to knock it off, and enjoyed it enough to actually spend money (I'm a huge cheapskate) on the 4-6 bundle. Again, I enjoyed them, but there was another H I didn't really like.

I was all set to buy the next bundle... but it's not been released. The series is up to book 10 or 11 I think, but not sure if it's going to bundle up or not... and I am a huge cheapskate and the 'world' is just not 'tight' enough for me to buy the individual books at a higher (but still decent) price.

The writing doesn't really leave loose ends, but doesn't really square all the details away either. So the mother who racked up $30k in debt costing her daughter her entire fortune leaving them both potentially on the streets, is just a no worries, we'll give her grandkids so she won't spend so much. The bad guys aren't always completely sorted. The social mores are not only loose, but not always the same... Unescorted young ladies are a big no no, but they all seem to do it with no thought or consequences, mistresses are bad but then they talk about marrying mistresses if they get pregnant, illegitimate children are not great but are sometimes a horror (situation not kid) and sometimes part of the scenery. Scandals are a horror but then brushed over. Widows are free to have lovers but her having a lover is a horror. It's all just a bit loose.

(Same review for 4-7)

I am not a huge fan of the 'teach me how to be a well-paid prostitute' trope in romantic fiction. Regardless that it points to a historically accurate lack of options for women who need to earn money, it does gloss over the real and present dangers of sex work. And yes, it glosses over it even when rakish young viscounts are telling young women about the real and present dangers of sex work. And worse, it also threw in some criminal activity prompted by blackmail. Also not a favourite trope. But the book was cheap via BookBub, so what was to lose by reading it?

I ended up skimming over the 'oooo, kiss me quick so I can be a great whore' first third of the book. And then I skimmed the bits where a cast of characters I don't know (because I haven't read the other books in the series) have incomprehensible conversations about people coming and going from drawing rooms as if this was a comedic farce. I paid more attention to the last third, which seemed to get a grip of itself and tie some of the loose ends together in a moderately satisfying way. Still not a fan of the basic premise.

Enjoyed It

This was a fun read because the characters were interesting and not imbued with dark emotional baggage. The storyline had its twists and turns that kept me reading.

The heroine is portrayed as strong and in a very good way. She is not headstrong, stubborn nor defiant. Her father is in debtor’s prison and she is being blackmailed into being an accomplice to robbery. She handled her situation quite well. She has maturity and she is the typical virginal, assertive, kind hearted heroine. The hero is portrayed as honorable, pleasant and overall mild-mannered in the sense that there are no scenes of him being overly alpha or an arrogant bully. He is protective and a man of action. I like the hero and heroine’s interactions because it was grounded enough. Even their lovemaking scenes (steamy but not sordid) blended well into the story. There were certain loopholes in the plot twists and how they were resolved but quite tolerable. The epilogue would have been nice if it was well into the future of the couple instead of just a few days and more emphasis was given to lay the foundation for a future book. Overall, I enjoyed the book.

One of best of series. Good stand-alone read too

I'd read a few of series and quit because I didn't enjoy some of the mid-series stories. Because I usually enjoy Boyd's books, decided to give this one a go because of the higher ratings.
Very glad I did.
Thoroughly enjoyed the characters and their relationship. Appreciated that the author showed the characters' development through action and behaviors.
Note-Passionate and sensual with a little graphic language. May not be for those who prefer tame love scenes.

This was the dumbest, most unromantic pile of shit I've ever read - or skimmed through, rather. This was so BORING, the hero was a beta hero with a kid he had fathered with some whore who had died in childbirth. This guy even said he would have married the whore if she had told him she was pregnant. Yuck.

The story did not work for me. The romance felt forced and there wasn't a whole lot of chemistry between the two main characters. I also didn’t like the characters.

My star rating system:
5 stars: I loved it! 😍
4 stars: I enjoyed it but it could be better 😃
3 stars: It was OK 🙂
2 stars: I disliked it but not all aspects were bad 😒
1 star: I hated it and I regretted reading it 🤬

Please note this review may contain spoilers.

Iris needs a protector, a man to provide her with financial stability in return for sexual favours. She’d rather have a husband, but with no money to her name and her father’s actions ruining her reputation, she’ll have to settle for living the life of a mistress. She approaches Martin, a man she trusts, to ask him about the life of a mistress and what would be expected of her. He’s shocked by her questions but sees she is determined to follow this path, so he sets out to prove to her why she’ll never take to the life of a mistress. But his “lessons” affect him more than he anticipated, and it’s not long before he offers Iris more than she ever dreamed of having. But both are hiding terrible secrets, secrets that will ruin both their names should they be revealed.

Iris is a strong woman, but she’s also shy and a little insecure, which isn’t surprising given the era. When she comes into power, she uses it quickly and wisely, earning the respect of those around her. Martin is a true gentleman, so much so that I can’t figure out why he’s considered a rogue. He is polite, successful, dependable, respectful, careful with the reputation of others, I could go on and on. Yes, he had mistresses in the past, but he always provided for them very well and was faithful to each one.

Being an historical romance, there were words used that I didn’t understand, and all I can say is thank god for the Kindle dictionary. AN IMPROPER PROPOSAL is book 6 in the series, but it can be read as a standalone. I’ll be honest, I was stepping out of my comfort zone with this one. It’s not that I don’t like historical romances, there’s nothing wrong with them, they’re just not really for me. But every now and then, I like to take a chance and try something different. I took a chance on AN IMPROPER PROPOSAL and I don’t regret it.

I absolutely loved this book! The romance was sweet, the hero was swoon worthy, and the heroine was smart and brave. The love scenes were hot and steamy!
Iris has secrets, her father is in debtor's prison, but society believes he is hiding out on the continent. She is also being blackmailed into giving secrets to a man who will hurt her father if she doesn't help him rob member's of the tons houses. Iris wants to find a way to get away from her blackmailer and save up enough money to get her father out of prison. She decides that she will become a wealthy man's mistress because she doesn't believe that any man will want to marry her now.
Martin also has secrets, his former mistress has died during child birth and has left a daughter behind, which he thinks may be his child. Martin has another problem, Iris who he is attracted to has propositioned him to let her become his next mistress. She also is asking for lessons on how to seduce a man if he won't agree to become her protector. He lets Iris believe that he doesn't want her for a mistress, but he doesn't want her to be a mistress to him or any other man; he wants her for his wife.
There is a good amount of steamy love scenes and conflict in this book. I really liked that most of the time the Martin and Iris talked to each other and were honest when they felt they could be. There were no silly misunderstandings that didn't make sense. Even when things were tough they still liked each other and wanted to fall deeper in love. I really want to read more of the Distinguished Rogues series and many more of Heather Boyd's books!

This is book 6 in the Distinguished Rogues series.

With her father in debtors prison, Iris Hedley is forced to what is necessary to survive. She has been spying on the ton for an unscrupulous robber, but knows that she can't do that any longer. She decides that only way to survive is to become a rich man's mistress. She asks the one man she trusts to teach her everything she needs to know for this new role.

Martin Andrews, the Earl of Louth, can't believe that Iris is asking for his help in learning how to become a mistress. He sets out to convince her that this road is not the one she should take. He didn't count on falling for her himself.

As Iris and Martin get closer to each other, Iris is worried that Martin will learn the truth about what she has done to survive and the location of her father. Will Martin's feelings change when the truth is revealed?

I really enjoyed this story. Iris was not your typical society miss. She didn't want to live off of the woman she was staying with. She felt like she needed to provide for herself. She got into some trouble trying to keep her father safe, but didn't know how to get herself out of the situation which leads to all kinds of drama.

I liked Martin. He had known Iris since she was a kid and felt like he needed to protect her. Lucky for us, his need to protect her turned into something more!

I can't wait to see what Boyd has in store for us next!

Thanks go out to LLD Press via NetGalley for a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review.

An Improper Proposal, Distinguished Rogues, Book 6, is another exceptional novel by Heather Boyd! I highly recommend it to anyone who loves regency historical romance or to those who are thinking of reading the genre for the first time.

Iris Hendley and Martin Andrews, Earl of Louth, each have secrets that they do not wish society to learn. Her farther is in debtor's prison instead of abroad as the public believes. To keep him safe, she is forced to assist robbers. She wants away from it and wants her father out of prison. But shes penniless. Her status does not bring any suitors so she decides the only way to achieve her desires is that she become a rich man's mistress. She asks her friend, Martin, to be his mistress. When he refuses, she asks questions that show her she has no idea what to do as a mistress. She asks Martin to teach her the sensual side and her responsibilities to please a man.

Ms. Boyd is talented in unfolding a story at a pace that keeps the book in your hands. Her characters' challenges are real and their struggles will tug at your emotions. I have not read previous books in the series and did not feel lost at all. However, I will go back and read them as Heather Boyd has me hooked on this series.

I was provided a copy from NetGalley for an honest review. I honestly loved it!

Oh yes. I enjoyed this. Mostly because of Esme. But I liked Iris enough too.

Iris has been living with a family friend, Esme, since her father lost his wealth and ended up in debtors prison. Which, they’ve both been keeping a secret. Everyone else believes that Iris’ father went abroad instead. To ensure her fathers safety in debtors prison Iris has to do a few unsavoury things for an unsavoury character. The only way she can see herself out of this situation is to find herself a rich man to whom she can become a mistress to. Iris is aware that because her father is in debtors prison, and if that information were ever to get out, she would not be able to find a decent husband. There’s a kink in her plan, however. Iris is virginal, so she believes she needs to learn about the art of seduction. So, she asks a man that she trusts. Enter, Martin Andrews.

Martin, Martin, Martin. Oh lord this was incredibly frustrating and amazing all at once. I can’t go too much into an explanation in case I accidentally spoil it, which is the last thing I want to do. It’s worth reading it first-hand. I went through a few emotions reading this, ones I wasn’t expecting if I’m honest. Heart-wrenching moments, laugh-out-loud moments and just moments of pure intrigue to see how it would all play out.

This book is a real good one: good plot, strong characters, interesting and tough intrigue with a lot of passion, suspens and sweet feelings (particularly the Violet's part).

I was so caught by the story that I would have loved to reread it again and again. Sadly, I will not. Because as much as this book is really well written and entertaining, there are too much sensual scenes and far too graphic for my taste.

I know that it is difficult to find a good book without at least one intimate scene on it now but this one has too many for my taste.

I know that it could fit in the plot but they could have been suggested and not graphically depicted everytime.

When a book can be so good and sweet, it doesn't have to be so hard cause it's ruin the story... at least, there should have a warning because this book is not for every reader and particularly not for the youngest or those who love -like me- to read beautiful "clean" story.

Many years ago I became hooked on historicals after reading Laurie McBain's book, Devil's Desire. Various authors through the years have fed my addiction. After reading Heather Boyd's fantastic story in An Improper Proposal I know my addiction will continue. Ms Boyd has given us a well written book that includes great characters, drama, a bit of action and let's not forget the sexy bits. I loved this book from cover to cover and I'm glad to have another writer of historical novels to follow. This was my first Heather Boyd book, but I look forward to reading more from her in the future. An Improper Proposal is a complete book, NOT a cliff-hanger.

This is the first book I have read from Heather Boyd but I am now hunting down more of hers! This is actually the sixth book in the series "Distinguished Rogues". To me this is a standalone book so don't be worried if you, like me haven't read the books in order. The heroine, Iris Hedley has fallen on hard times due to her father and his debts. Which has put her on the path to where she ends up asking the hero, Martin Andrews, the Earl of Louth some questions and his help. I like how her friend, Esme tried to help her the best she could. This is a great read and I am so glad to have it... now to get the other books!

Iris Hedley had lost everything and her father is in debtors prison and now she was living off the charity of one of her friends. No one knows where her dad was keeping it a secret so that maybe she would still have a chance at marriage. But to keep her dad safe she is being blackmailed into helping a criminal rob the rich people and feeling hopeless she decides to become a courtesan. So that she can support herself she asks Lord Louth to teach her what she needs to know to become a mistress and he didn't think she was serious, but then he was afraid she would ask someone else and so he finally agrees. This book was very humorous and i enjoyed it.

This is the sixth installation of the Distinguished Rogues series. Miss Iris Hedley is a penniless lady who know her prospects are limited. Especially with no dowry, Iris decides to become a mistress. Miss Iris always finds Lord Martin Louth attractive and decides to put inquiries about what duties are expected in a mistress. Lord Martin is shocked, but intrigued. When the lessons begin, the passions ignite. I love this book. You can't help but fall in love with Lord Martin. Iris Hedley as gone from darling of the ton to ruin. Her father is in debtor’s prison and her only option is to become a mistress to a wealthy man and spy on the ton. Being inexperienced in seduction she asks the Earl of Louth to teach her. Excellent historical romance, fast paced and the story and the characters are excellent. Great Read!

It's book number six in the series and I haven't read the previous ones. I feel there's too much going on in the book, too many secondary characters and what feels like tidbits of other stories (past or future). The love story itself is quite nice, but I did jump paragraphs and pages quite often. The book might be a lot more enjoyable for somebody who has read the previous books.

I didn't really like the first third. There was just too much fretting and subterfuge going on, but I love the dynamics of the main characters, and they carried me through all the way to the end. It turned out to be a sweet story, still not among the best of Heather Boyd in my opinion, but my faith in the next couple of books in the series has been restored.
