An Improper Proposal is the sixth book in the Distinguished Rogues Series by Heather Boyd. It can easily be read as a stand alone book, but after reading it, I am sure you will want to go back to the beginning and read them all.
The story is about Iris Hedley. She was all set to marry, but when her father ended up losing her dowry and all his wealth, she allowed her fiance his freedom to find a wealthy woman because he needed the money. Since then she has been living with a family friend, Esme, and between them they are keeping it a secret that her father is actually in a debtors prison and not abroad as they have told everybody.
Circumstances beyond her control find Iris caught up in criminal activity and the only way she can see out of it is to offer herself as a mistress to a rich man who could become her protector. She is virginal and has no idea about seduction, so decides to ask a man whom she knows she can trust.
Martin Andrews, the Earl of Louth is that man. The Improper Proposal is her proposal to him to teach her what men want from a mistress and to help her practice it!! She knows she can never be a wife to a decent man because of her father and his fall from grace in society, plus she knows a protector won't be damaged if it comes about that her criminal activities are discovered. Not like a husband would be.
You will have to read the book to find out if he agrees to be her tutor and also to know what becomes of Iris and her criminal activities. Her story and that of Martin because he has his secrets too, is a very interesting read. I was made to feel the gamut of emotions throughout the book because there were silly lighthearted moment, heart breaking moments, worrisome moments, this book really has it all. I tried to read it all in one sitting because it's one of those books that you need to know the ending of sooner rather than later. But sadly circumstances got in the way and I had to read the book in two sittings instead of one. I am definitely going to read all the books in the series now that I have been introduced to this series, and I look forward to reviewing them.
The only negative I have about the book is more personal preference than anything else, but when a book is written in regency times and there is so much proper behaviour and gentleness going on, it seems wrong to put in words like 'bum' and 'wanking'. Even if they were said in that time, it just sounds crass and too modern for my liking. Bum should be bottom, and 'wanking' could easily be changed to 'pleasuring'. The settings they were used in didn't require crassness at all. So yes, that is my only negative. Certainly not enough to stop me loving the book and recommending it to all. And definitely not enough to drop my rating from 5 stars :D
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
