A fictional account of Formula 1 motor racing in the late 80s with a conspiracy plot surrounding the last 4 races of the season. I picked this up for 50 cents in a bargain bin having heard of it years before but never feeling compelled to read it. In the end I only picked it up as one of the locations of focus in the story is my home town of Adelaide (where the last race of the season takes place). Bob Judd has a good grasp of Formula 1 at the time, made even more impressive on certain technological aspects like the use of normal-aspirated engines for the 1989 season and the fact that the automatic gearbox was new in competitive F1. From a racing point of view, Judd doesn't turn the show into a ridiculous carnival of mayhem like the movie Driven which is a very good decision. The conspiracy plot was okay and a bit silly in the motor racing world but the same can be said of many police dramas or any TV show story based in a real setting. Judd has a very good writing style for this type of thing, full of interesting characters obviously based on real people of the time (Ken Tyrrell, Bernie Ecclestone, Jean-Marie Balestre, etc). Not sure who the main character driver is based on though. A cross between Martin Brundle and Gerhard Berger? Which brings up one point: Sometimes Judd mentions real drivers yet you never see them in the races.... which could lead to some confusion. Anyway, a good read but I don't feel compelled to pick up its sequels.
I'm a big fan of F1, and this is the first fictional book I've read on the subject. Formula one by Bob Judd is a fantastic read. It's got all the glamour of a formula one driver and more. Forrest Evers is driving for team Arundel, he's living the glamourous life of women and driving the fastest cars in the world. However, his carrier and life takes an unexpected wrong turn when his team mate gets killed in a crash. Over the next few races, Forrest crashes his own car through unexpected circumstances. He's convinced someone killed his team mate and now trying to sabotage his car to kill him. He has to watch his back as well as his lady friends who are also in danger. He ends up investigating desperately trying to find out who's trying to get him out of the way. A great story for Formula one fans.
