Shel Silverstein was the author-artist of many beloved books of prose and poetry. He was a cartoonist, playwright, poet, performer, recording artist, and Grammy-winning, Oscar-nominated songwriter.
Shel Silverstein will perhaps always be best loved for his extraordinary books. Shel’s books are now published in more than 47 different languages. The last book that was published before his death in 1999 was Falling Up
These plays are so witty, funny, weird, and enjoyable. I can’t believe Shel Silverstein wrote them because they’re so raunchy! But this collection of plays and shorts is a good time. I’d love to see it performed. Honestly I’d love to workshop these with acting students myself. My favorites were “Duck”, “All Cotton”, “No Shronking”, “Garbage Bags”, and “Do Not Feed the Animal”.
Offcuts from An Adult Evening with Shel Silverstein
As far as I could tell, this was more shorts a'la An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein but not as good. One or two were up to the same standard, ('Duck' particularly) but this was overall more 'okay and quite interesting' than the ecstatically good, aforementioned collection of shorts.
That said, since they're shorts I'm sure a good cast and good direction could bring them up to standard - but generally, I'd suggest you start with An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein, and move on to this one as an addendum if you really loved the first lot.
These many short plays are fun, mostly. Apparently, the only time they’ve been produced these 18 plays were done over two nights. Some of them are very over the top, several of them are not appropriate for the audience Silverstein built with his many children’s books.
Shel is incredible and multifaceted as he proves with these shorts. Witty and very mature with a touch of spice that just makes it more Shel-ish. I am in love with his work, lessons lessons and more lessons.
