Molly Bradley has had a hell of a bad year, but she’s doing everything possible to keep herself from going off the rails.
When she joins a new book club, she finds herself using every spare minute to plow through the difficult titles the hyper-competitive members choose.
The schedule is so tough she would have quit after the first meeting. But spending a little time with Alexa Fox, the host for that night’s meeting, convinced her that whipping through a book a week was a small price to pay for the pleasure of her company.
Now all she has to do is remind herself that their growing friendship has to remain just that—a hurdle that proves to be her toughest yet.
Susan X Meagher was born in southern Illinois and grew up in East St Louis. She attended college in Chicago and started her working career there. She and her partner moved to the Los Angeles area in the late 80's. It was there that she started to write. Her first few books were simply posted on the web and became the I Found My Heart in San Francisco series. In 2002 she moved to New York and divides her time between Manhattan and the Jersey Shore. She has published thirteen books in the series and has gone on to write many individual books as well. She has partnered with other authors on two short story books and has written many stories that have been published in other mainstream anthologies. Susan is active in the lesbian author community and loves to attend Women's week at Provincetown and the GCLS annual conventions. Her stories revolve around the relationships that two women can build when given a chance and how those relationships can strengthen the individual and the partnership. Her genre is lesbian romance/fiction and she believes strongly in the happy ending that we all so deserve. Susan X Meagher was awarded a 2011 Lesbian Fiction Readers’ Choice Award for Favorite Lesbian Fiction Writer. She is the recipient of the 2014 Alice B. Medal for her body of work.
From the author's website: I live in New York with my spouse, Carrie. We've lived in Chicago and Los Angeles for significant periods, but New York fits us very well. I love to discuss my work and fiction in general. My goal in writing is to explore feelings. I want to entertain, but I also want to make people think. I've heard that life is all about finding out who we are. To me, life if about finding out who other people are. I'm interested in the small details of life, that's how a story about two young women in college is slowly becoming a 26 book series. The joke in Seinfield was that it was about nothing. I feel the same about most of my books. They are about the many things that happen when nothing is happening. The small joys and sorrows of everyday life can be fascinating, especially if you care about the people involved. I try to create characters that will make a reader care deeply. I'm always interested in hearing how close I am to that goal. So please drop me a line whenever you have a comment or a question about a story. Writing is a pretty solitary pursuit and it's great to know that I'm not alone.
I'm a huge Meagher fan and her writing is as strong as ever but this was certainly one of her lesser works. Quite often I saw the same dynamic the characters from All That Matters have. The same theme of ditching the husband is present, as well as the lesbian falling in love with a straight woman. Their specific characteristics also came off as really similar, for example, the straight woman is all independent and logical almost exactly like in All That Matters.
But what I love most about Meagher is that couples get together fast enough that there's plenty to explore in their newly formed relationship. We get to spend time with them. This time she wanted to mix it up I guess but it didn't pay off. As a result, the middle part is very repetitive where they spend their time in a standoff and the payoff is only mildly satisfying.
I normally write a review within a day or two of finishing a book. I like to do so while the plot and how the story made me feel is still fresh in my mind. That wasn’t the case with ‘Wait for Me’. Two weeks later, I’m still conflicted over how this story made me feel.
It’s a slow burn, the slowest I’ve read to date. The friendship between the mains was fantastic! Every single person needs a friendship like the bond that ties these two women together. As boring as it might sound, their friendship is what made this story work for me. The celebrating of their birthdays and trips away were so much fun!
Although I received this as a lesbian romance, to me, it is neither. Sure, there’s a deep friendship, but no romance until just before the curtain comes down, and both characters are bisexual. So, I feel it only fair to warn readers there’s also hetro-sex in this story. Although brief, the scenes are explicit enough to paint a lasting picture.
Alexa is happily married, and her husband, Dieter, is a delightful character. They appear to have the perfect marriage, contract aside which felt more like a plot device than authentic as it’s mentioned so late in the story.
And therein lies what didn’t work for me. I didn’t buy into the ending. It was too ‘pat’ which I could’ve lived with if I was given more once the ladies got together. Instead, I turned the last page saying, really? That’s it? What became of them as a couple? When the dynamics changed, did they make it work as lovers? I guess this is one of those books where it’s left to the reader to draw their own conclusion.
Would I recommend ‘Wait for Me?’ Absolutely, there’s a lot to like about it, so give it a shot.

Molly has had a tough year; she’s lost her best friend to a freak accident, ended her marriage and feels alienated from her conservative and catholic parents over the divorce. When she joins a book club to fill the void she is instantly alienated by the hyper intellectual snobbery of the organisers, but the host, Alexa, is appealing enough to go back for more.
As their friendship develops Molly must control her growing attraction for the happily married Alexa, despite knowing she is stifling her own chance to find happiness, but the thought of losing her friend is enough to make her take a vow of celibacy. Now if only Alexa loved her back…
This is an interesting and well done take on the “don’t fall for straight women” story with a decidedly interesting twist. The characters are deep, well rounded, real people who feel their situations acutely and with whom we can’t help but empathise. Anyone who has had an unrequited crush must feel Molly’s pain, and most of us have had to choose to hurt somebody we cared for but just didn’t love enough.
The connection between the new friends is extremely well portrayed, the growing knowledge and understanding, the matching attitudes and opinions which make for the strongest of bonds between best friends, and the shared joys in everyday things which makes them virtually inseparable.
As the twists and turns unfold Susan Meagher pulls us in, feeling the agony, the shock and pain of rejection and hurt, of difficult decisions and life altering actions. The emotions are very real and few of us will have escaped our own variations. But don’t let these serious descriptors put you off, this is a romance and a happy ever after, there is just some real angst to get there.
Extremely well done, I thoroughly enjoyed this very grown up romance. Neither woman has an easy road, but the outcome is even more heartfelt for having had a high price. It is really refreshing to read a very realistic journey that many of us can empathise with.
This was again a very nice book by Meagher. I like her writing style. There is a nice build up of the relationship, some humour and a little bit of controversy. The feel of this book reminds me of another book of hers ‘All that matters’ though that last one is the better one in my opinion. But I can certainly recommend this one too.
I am shocked to realize this is my 1st Susan X Meagher book purchase! Although I've downloaded several samples... Hope I don't go broke rectifying that slight of error 😂😂😂
I personally think I couldn't have made a better choice for a start. This book pulled me right in like a riptide!! I downloaded the sample at 5am & FOOLISHLY started reading it. Bought the book IMMEDIATELY upon completion of the sample & read 51% before I FORCED myself to get a couple hours sleep before my full work day 😂😂😂😂😂
The wait was ABSOLUTE TORTURE!
Possible spoilers ahead...
I really related to Alexa, up to a point, her marriage was a mirror of my failed marriage. BUT, THEN, she KISSED Molly! Whew!! Yeah, I, myself, KNEW better than to open that Pandora's box! Some things you CAN'T unknown or undo.
So I got to 82% before I was forced to return to my torturous employment, lol WITHOUT which I couldn't support my book fix 😂😆😉 ... And I THOUGHT I had it ALL figured out - Boy, was I WRONG! It's difficult to read through teary eyes... But, thankfully, there was a glimmer of light through the misty fog of despair...
And now, after completion of my gluttonous reading of this book, I can only hope for a SEQUEL??? PLEASE?! Alexa survived opening that box, please give me more than just a taste of the aftermath. 🤔😎
3 Stars. Whoa did it really take me about a month to finish this book?
First the good - I really liked both characters. Molly who recently divorced Dieter, when she came to terms that she was a lesbian. (She never cheated). Molly decides to join a book club when her old one wasn’t working for her. At the new book club she meets Alexa, who is happily married to Michael and they own a small but successful high end woman’s clothing boutique. Molly & Alexa immediately hit it off as friends. BFFs to the highest order. Unfortunately Molly also falls in love with Alexa but unwilling to lose Alexa never tells her.
It starts out well, but it really dragged in the middle. I like slow burn, but this was sloooow. So much so, I put the book down numerous times and picked up another book or fanfic to read then went back for a few chapters and repeat. Good thing is I was able to pick up the book and continue reading without missing a beat. That doesn’t usually doesn’t happen for me. It helps that Meagher is a good writer and I was determined to finish. The thing is, if I thought about it, I normally avoid any stories with infidelity and I probably shouldn’t of bought this book. I was getting anxious waiting for it to happen.
So the middle was about their friendship, Holly’s relationship with her parents and Alexa’s marriage. Then the ending felt so rushed and short that they were a real couple for only the last 3% of the book. I would’ve like to see more of them as a couple. Though I guess you could argue they were a “couple” when they were just friends just without benefits. However Holly was suffering in silence with unrequited love.
Oh well, many more liked this book more than me so your mileage may differ.
This is a story about not settling for second best especially when you have the chance with your true soul mate.
Molly has just ended her marriage and is restarting her life. The death of her best friend was a catalyst for many changes in her life, the biggest being that she is not straight. She is now finding herself again and the first thing she does is join a new book club where she meets Alexa. Alexa is charming with a warm personality and they become fast friends. Molly knows from the beginning that it’s unrequited but when signs show that that might not be the case, she’s ready to jump in with both feet. But as far as Molly knows Alexa is happily married. Nothing can come of this… Can it?
I found this story rather heartbreaking. Like every Susan X Meagher book she really explores her characters in depth but I think with this book the inner turmoil for these two was superbly written.
As the story unfolds you truly are taken into the book and you feel everything the characters are feeling. For me personally, Molly was the star of the book… The inner thoughts and feelings of her unrequited love for Molly was beautiful yet heart wrenching to read.
When these two get together the fireworks are worth the wait. The chemistry is very pure and the feelings they have for each other are all consuming. I really got excited for their life together and knew the book at that point was headed for the happy ever after I had been craving from the very beginning.
I think this may be one of the best Susan X Meagher books to date and I highly recommend it. The happy ever after is worth every ounce of pain these characters go through.
I love when I can't keep the smile off my face at the end of a book. This is a damn near perfect romance for me: slow burn, lots of time to get to know the characters - and for them to get to know each other, and plenty of chemistry.
While plenty was different in this book, the feel of it reminded me of All That Matters. I cared about both of these women and felt like I had a stake in their relationship. I honestly had a very tough time putting it down. Which is saying a lot, really, since the past few months have been filled with more books that I've quit than I've finished. But there was no way I could drop this one.
If you're already a fan of SXM, you'll very likely fall in love with this book. If you haven't tried the author yet, now's a good time.
**After reading it for a second time in preparation for the upcoming Cocktail Hour show, I feel pretty much the same as I did during my first read. **
Susan X Meagher's 2018 novel, Wait For Me, is a slow-burn, friends-to-lovers story set in the USA.
Molly Bradley is recently divorced. Her marriage was good, but a hidden yearning for a woman's love persisted within her. After moving to a new apartment in NYC, she joined a book club and met Alexa Fox, who appears to have it all. From the moment they met, it was clear there was something special between them.
As the story unfolds, the characters and their journey of self-discovery come to life. Cleverly written, relatable characters coupled with modern day complexities and interesting back stories held my interest. The more I read, the more I was hooked. It’s a book that has made me think about choices, different paths, and what ifs in life.
Exactly what subject line says. It is a very slow burn read. But the emotional buildup is fantastic and worth the time spent together read this masterpiece. Fantastic details of personal conflicts, interpersonal relationships, family issuses, the coming out process, and emotional roadblocks that hender or shape our daily lives. Visit unique destinations with authors vivid descriptions. Just do it.
This is a lesfic romance that does not follow the usual lesfic formula. The protagonists had not got together towards the half the book, and that made me very anxious. I always love the author’s books, and look forward to more unusual works from her.
A few pages into the sample & I was hooked! Possible spoilers
I love this book, I know I'll read it several times over the years. I was surprised to get pulled in so quickly. I downloaded the sample at 5am, bought the book immediately upon finishing the sample & didn't put it down until I'd read 51% of it and absolutely had to make myself go to sleep! Lol, so I slept all of 2 hours before my full 8 hour, torturous shift at work!! Torturous because I WANTED TO FINISH THIS BOOK!! I failed to get through the other 49% after my shift, but only from lack of sleep. Going to work the next day with 18% left was far worse torture than the previous day, by far!!!
I must say that I really related to Alexa because for most of the book, this was a mirror of my marriage to my ex husband. Right up until she kissed Molly. That Pandora's box I left shut, because I knew I'd never get it closed if I opened it...
So, I left for work thinking I had it all figured out, boy was I wrong! Trying to read through teary eyes is difficult, lol.
So, fresh from completion, now my only regrets are that it's over. Binge reading a new book is always my favorite pass time, but I truly regret my gluttony when there's nothing left to do but to WRITE A REVIEW, WISH FOR A SEQUEL - HINT HINT!!?? , & re-read one of my other favorite books like other people re-watch their favorite movies . 😉🙄 😃
Big fan of Susan, love how much detail she puts into her books. I’ve learnt about Wine, Italy plenty more things! You can tell she really studies things before adding them. I actually learn about things reading her books. Love it. I didn’t mind this book! It’s different from her others, not so exciting.. if you are a fan you’ll get what I’m saying. So it left me expecting but it never came, all the opportunities that the two MC’s had I thought for sure it was about to happen.
I loved Wait for Me by Susan X. Meagher. What a beautifully written book. The story flows beautifully. Excellent plot and characters. As a side note, it was a relief to read an ebook not filled with typos, incorrect spelling and words with gaps in them. I thank the editors for that.
I adore this author and her ability to really entrance and pull me into the live of the MC's and this novel is no exception. A slow burning build up with some unexpected elements. If you like a longer novel, this is the author for you.
Well written in-terms of good editing and no typos with interesting vocabulary to stretch the brain muscles. Apart from that....
I ACTUALLY HATED THIS BOOK. It was unnecessarily long. Too much drawn conversations I didn't care much about so I ended up skimming through a lot of the text. Some of the storylines about different characters were unnecessary and added nothing to the story. The author was trying too hard. The dialogue was boring and left nothing to the imagination. There was no element of surprise, just drawn out, pointless talking. Very predictable. Yawn.
I hated the protagonist because of what she did. I'm all for lesbian love but not infidelity. This was done in a very distasteful manner and it felt forced. I felt the protagonist (Molly) Was really whiney, selfish and entitled. Ugh.
I felt the love interest was very flighty and untrust-worthy which made her sudden realisation of her feelings unbelievable. Ugh Her feelings just seemed to spring up from nowhere as if the author was trying to justify the relationship by making the married woman confess.
How the protagonist behaved felt immoral and dirty. I feel like she knowingly inserted herself in someone life and had not qualms about messing it up. For me, the relationship felt flat. Even though there is somewhat a happy ending, It left me feeling really bad.
I loved things about the story and wasn’t thrilled about other things. Susan Meagher always writes tells the story well and I get lost in them. Without any spoilers I can only say the characters are great, have a lot of chemistry and in the end the story works.
You always get VFM with Ms Meagher - plenty of pages for your pounds. And this is no exception to that general rule….lots of build up as Molly and Alexa meet and develop a very special friendship. Molly has left her straight marriage having accepted that she’s a lesbian at heart. Then she finds herself falling for Alexa almost immediately, whilst Alexa is in a seemingly good marriage to a decent man. I thought I might find cheating difficult to bear but both Molly and Alexa behave entirely properly for the majority of this. And even when they do slightly slip, they do everything possible not to hurt Alexa’s husband. Not only are the relationship issues between Molly and Alexa thoroughly probed but the extended family dynamics are too, particularly Molly’s with her parents. Revelations are made that are never fully resolved but then life isn’t often tied up with a neat little bow! My only issue with this really was that I wanted more of Alexa and Molly together after they finally get what they both want. Apart from that, there was a LOT to like in this.
This was a sweet double toaster oven romance that is an absolutely slowest of slow burns. There’s almost no spice, until the very end but it works for this book.
Molly is just divorced, having finally figured out that she’s exclusively attracted to women. So what does she do? She falls head over heels for her brand new presumed straight best friend, Alexa.
And Alexa? She has always just assumed she was straight and that sex just wasn’t a big deal for herself. That’s why she married Michael, working in their boutique shop together, tending to his “needs” like a “good” wife should, but each of them having largely separate social lives after their workday together was over, a situation for Alexa that works until it suddenly doesn’t.
This story is their journey together, figuring everything out, and then dealing with the fallout.
As I said, almost no spice but otherwise, if the idea if this book appeals to you, give it a shot. I enjoyed it greatly.
This novel may not be right for all lesbian romance readers, but it worked for me. Molly Bradley, recently divorced from a good and loving husband because she finally admitted to herself that she is a lesbian, fills some of her downtimes with a book discussion group, and there meets Alexa Fox, an attractive married woman who is in some way a kindred book-loving spirit. Molly is looking for lesbian love, but meanwhile, she finds Alexa very interesting. The two gradually become close friends, neither of them realizing that they are playing with emotional fire. If you are looking for a hot-sex lesbian romance, this isn't it. Instead, this is a pretty believable, thoughtful, slow-burn friendship growing into something else kind of novel. Meagher does this relationship dance very well, and I loved the journey.
When Molly and Alex meet, neither of them could have anticipated just how much their relationship would challenge them. Wow, this book hits on some heavy topics love, intimacy, self knowledge, sexual awakening, relationships, marriage..... the book makes you take a hard look at what these thing mean to you personally and as a social construct. The author does a wonderful job of drawing you in with a well developed story line along with characters who are flawed yet are relatable and human. I recommend this for anyone who enjoys stories that immerse you in the environment and emotions of the characters.
Two coming out stories, from rather different starting points, lead to an angst filled tale. The solid friendship between Molly and Alexa keeps pointless misunderstandings from destroying the relationship and make for a believable, if somewhat frenetic, HEA. The only weakness in Wait for Me is in the perfunctory secondary characters. Some of them had the potential to be much more than set dressing.
One of those books that I had to put down even though I didn't want to because I was getting through it too fast and I didn't want it to finish. But now it has so I'm going to have to read some trite stuff for a while to let my brain settle. This is the first novel I've read from this author but I'm very happy to see that she has written about a zillion others. I'm going to have to tweak my book budget.
This book, while well written, spent most of the story developing a relationship between 2 women who had yet to find the passion in their lives, yet once they found each other, the author skipped their initial discovery of their shared passion. Instead she just jumped 2 months ahead into their relationship and tossed in a love scene.
Very similar to All That Matters, which was excellent but this book kind of dragged on to a very, very slow burn. It dwelled on and on about Michael, the husband, how wonderful their marriage was, etc. It could have been a great book but only a farily ok one. When they become a couple, the book is ended.
