Penny White #6

The Nest of Nessies

Rate this book

‘Are you saying,’ Commander Hubbert demanded, ‘that a pack of dinosaurs have our vessel?’

I shrugged. ‘That seems to be the best explanation. The nessies have the submarine.’

Heartbreak. And I thought I’d already had more than my full share. Even the wonders of the magical country of Lloegyr can’t entirely dull the pain. The company of Raven might help, but the dragon has gone to a monastery to fight the influence of the Noble Leader’s spirit.

But there’s little time to grieve. A dead merwoman has turned up in a killer whale’s pool. The Archdruid wants me to find a home for a winged unicorn. And the vampires in my church prefer to be naked when they attend meetings.

Now Her Majesty’s Government has requested my help to bring a stolen nuclear submarine back to Britain. This will mean negotiating with rat kings, merpeople, and were-orcas, and all of them have agendas of their own…

Priest by day, writer at odd times of the day and night, I live with a small green parrot called Tilly because the upkeep for a dragon is beyond my current budget. Plus I’m responsible for making good any flame damage to church property. I love ‘Doctor Who’, landscape photography, single malt whisky, and my job, in no particular order. When I’m not looking after a small parish church in the Midlands (England) I like to go on far flung adventures to places like Peru, New Zealand, and North Korea.

I have to admit that I haven't read all the Penny White books, but the one's I've read have been very worth reading. So if you're wondering whether Book 6 is the place to jump into the series, I'd probably recommend starting with Book 1, but if you want to start here, it's easy enough to follow along with the main action of the story, although there's discussion of things that happen in earlier books.

In any case, the Penny White books are a charming mixture of whimsical fantasy, cozy British humor, and a sincere expression of Christian faith without preachiness. Although some readers may be turned off by the religious element, I quite enjoyed it despite not being Christian. Penny is a delightful character, and the world that has been created around her is imaginative and fully realized. Recommended for readers looking for some warmhearted fantasy that still engages explicitly with modern social issues, or for fans of Doctor Who who are looking for someone with whom to share their obsession.

Hooked on dragons

I absolutely adore this series and can barely wait to start the next in line. Poor Rev Penny is troubled after splitting from her fiancé. A dead merwoman, a were orca, a missing nuclear sub and an unreasonable political minister who only wants to exploit the beings and land of Lloegyr. What can Penny do to protect those she has come to love? You’ll just have to read on like me!

Penny just gets deeper and deeper into Llyeogyr problems with each book. The Nest of Nessies is another fun, touching, and heart-wrenching romp! Seriously, if you haven't started this series yet, what are you waiting for?

The author is right back in her stride with this one.

Dragons, merpeople, were-sharks, nessies, sneaky rats....

What is not to like.

The story is satisfyingly complex, and I wasn’t expecting where it went in the end.

Can’t wait for the next instalment.

Yet another amazing, enthralling, compelling story in the Penny White series! Book Six finds Penny struggling to find balance in a work relationship with Peter (after the crumbling of their personal one) while being drawn further into the orbit of Minister without Portfolio Sue Harkness. That woman sets my teeth on edge!

After a British submarine slips through a thin space and into Lloegyr, Penny is drafted to negotiate the return of both the sub and her crew. Meanwhile Clyde is considering entering the priesthood... The Archdruid of the Unicorns calls Penny’s debt due... Penny has another run-in with Earls Barton man (how many excuses can she come up with for the strange goings on in his back garden?)... And a dead mermaid turns up near the orca tank at Midlands Safari Park but no one know how she got there, let alone where she came from or how her remains should be handled...

It’s all piling up rather quickly for Penny and juggling her duties- to self, family, church, England and Lloegyr -might just prove to be too much. That’s why, when Sue Harkness learns about air crossings and starts plotting ways to use them to the advantage of the British government, Penny must make a drastic decision which holds immense consequences for everyone, human and non-human alike.

Every book in the Penny White series has held my attention from start to finish, with each one gripping my heart a little tighter than the last. I don’t know how Ms Cymri manages to interweave so many complicated, human themes into this wondrous fantasy tale, but she does so with aplomb. Penny is, as always, a heroine I can relate to: imperfect, loveable, a bit mad (in all the good ways), and steadfast in her commitment to doing the right thing even when it’s hard. And boy, do things get hard! If you haven’t begun the Penny White journey yet, what are you waiting for? Or, if like me, you’re waiting impatiently for each new book, hurry up and nab this one. You won’t be disappointed.

After her breakup with Peter can Lloegyr ease her pain? Possibly although Raven is at a monastery fighting the Noble Leader's spirit's influence so not as available as she would like. Then a nest of nessies have a missing UK submarine and the government want her help to get it and the crew back. Then a ded merwoman turns up in a killer whale's pool in a park, the killer whale is not what he seems, the archdruid wants to cash-in on her promise and asks for refuge for a winged unicorn and the vampires in her church would prefer to be naked at meetings. It's enough to put a person over the edge which all comes to a head when it becomes apparent that the submarine commander is very interested in the thin places they travelled through on their journey home. Can Penny make all the right decisions, rescue or return everyone in time, and work through all the problems in her own life?

I loved this story with was full of drama, danger, twists and turns as Penny tried her best to work through the politics and preferences of all the different races and nations she encountered (including her own). Through all of that, Raven stood by her and did everything he could to help her through all of the various problems. Sklar did all she could to help in the church which culminated in her ordination as a priest. I loved the importance of family and the protectiveness Penny had for all creatures and her loved ones which remained steadfast no matter the problems she encountered. Well written and very enjoyable, you really need to start this charing series and lose yourself in this world of fantastical creatures.

3.9 stars. I'm feeling a bit conflicted about this series for two reasons:
1. Penny's ongoing issues with alcohol (which admittedly might be a cultural misconception on my end; I just don't have experience with reaching for a drink as often as Penny does)
2. Penny's tendency to make sweeping decisions without sufficiently consulting others.

These two things have left me grimacing more than once and have inserted a seed of dread into the expected enthusiasm about completing the series.

This series is one of my all-time favorites. I cannot recommend these books enough. Nest of Nessies was rich in detail, storytelling, characterization, and plot. It filled my heart and I could not stop reading, particularly by the end. The end...holy cow, the end. Clyde is my favorite character in all of literature, and it was lovely to see his story progress. I quite literally laughed and cried and kept sharing snippets with my family. Eagerly awaiting the next book!

Another wonderful adventure into Lloegyr with Penny, Raven, Clyde, Morey, and Jago. I love being lost in a story filled with flights through thin places on the back of a dragon to meet Nessie’s, were-Orcas, Merpeople, as they search for a nuclear sub being held by Nessies as a toy. #6 had some sad moments and a particular sad ending but look forward to #7 with hope. (Humans really are a pain 🤦‍♀️)

It just keeps getting better with each book - the last two books have really drawn me in. I found myself feeling deeply for the characters and their circumstances, getting a lump in my throat on several occasions; at one point I had to stop reading so that no one would ask me what was wrong, as I was on the verge of tears (for the sad ... and happy bits).

I hope this is not the last Penny White book!!!

But I love the fact that Penny made the decision that both worlds should of made to keep their people and countries safe.

Read and enjoy!!

Better than ever

I loved it, despite the sad ending. Still hope though with three more books to go! When I finish the series, I really will miss characters. They come so alive, human and non human. A rare talent
