I love LA fiction. More accurately, I would say I am fascinated by it. The exploration of vanity, desperation, the desire to "fit in" to the Hollywood lifestyle, and the quixotic nature of it all, leaves me intrigued, asking for more explanation, every time. Perry Crowe's style in Deuced, reminds me of Nathanael West's, The Day of the Locusts.
This book is dense, and asks a lot from the reader; by the time it is over you will be winded. I loved it, and it was one of the best books I read in 2007. Crowe's exploration of the human condition is insightful, especially for an authors first novel, yet the overall sense of humor is not abandoned. The Oblivion Brothers feel like people we all know, confronting the questions we all have.
I hope this book finds an audience, it surely deserves to.
Nice freshman effort. Needs to be taken as a whole. A little too breezy at times. Penetrating insight into the human condition, though. And pretty funny.
