Optimisfits: Igniting a Fierce Rebellion Against Hopelessness Ben Courson

2.75 stars

"God does not endure you. He enjoys you."

Ben Courson presents his case as to why you should live life joyfully and let go of the hopelessness that the world around you wants you to believe in. He defines an Optimisfit as someone who doesn't conform to society, who lives life like it's an adventure, who lives with wild abandon, who lives with childlike wonder, and who has unapologetic optimism. I'll be honest, I don't know how to feel about this book. I didn't dislike it, but I didn't like it either. Ben Courson has a very aggressive and slightly judgmental writing style while also retaining the amount of whimsy and try-hard creativity of a twelve-year-old. I liked the try-hard creativity to an extent, but I found myself raising an eyebrow when he called Jesus a straight-up savage (which he is, but our slang of today makes it sound childish and not as epic as it truly is). I will say that if you are someone who loves religion more than relationship, then this book will definitely make you feel condemned and called out (which may be what Jesus is trying to speak into your life, so don't run away too hard from this book).

If you are looking to challenge your theology, this may do it, but it does not bring in much Biblical text as evidence. Every now Courson references a Psalm without listing it (which I found to be very unimpressive and unimpressive in correlation with the complexities and diverse array of arguments he was attempting to make). I could also do with having to read about his "Squad", but it is nice to see an author who is so heavily impacted by the community of Christians he has surrounded himself with and the positive impact they have on his life. I enjoyed that aspect, but I wish that Courson was more vulnerable and less of a dude-bro who wants to lay down the facts. In all honesty, his facts had a lot of holes in them, but I did enjoy his references to pop culture and historical figures in both philosophy, literature, and history. However, this book feels more like it is targeted towards a high school student or somebody curious about breaking out of the religious mold of Christianity. A lot of his commentary on God aligns with my own (without the juvenile usage of slang, of course), but I think that this book will help many young adults find their way to relationship in a challenging and uplifting way.

Here's my personal favorite quote that made me giggle for way too long:
"She eats rainbow sandwiches for lunch and dines on Pegasus steak."

Whimsical Writing Scale: 2.5

Plotastic Scale: 3

Cover Thoughts: This cover is gorgeous. Kudos to the designer because wow.

Thank you, Netgalley and Harvest House Publishers, for providing me with a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

"Optimisfits: Igniting A Fierce Rebellion Against Hopelessness" is a call to reach towards something that seems to be in short supply: hope! Author Ben Courson explains what an "optimisfit" is in this funny, honest read. He shares stories of his Squad of very different friends and how they continue to enjoy this life to the fullest. Ben also provides anecdotes from people in history that he feels embodies the spirit of an optimisfit. The question then remains: are you willing to become a "hope dealer"?

This book's message is something that will reach across generations. With record numbers of suicide, depression and anxiety that plague our world today, "Optimisfits" offers a better way to face struggles: honesty and vulnerability within safe circles. There are also encouragements throughout the book to remain different, to stand in our own uniqueness amidst assimilation, and to seek God's will for our lives, even when they do not look like the lives we envisioned.

I have not read any of Ben's work before, but the idea that we can be open about where our battles lie, admit we don't have it all together and still be effective in God's community are important messages. We don't have to be perfect to make a difference or to offer hope. Often we think we are the only ones struggling and turn to isolation. This book will encourage the reader to seek friends who can support you through tough times, as well as happy times. There is also encouragement to seek, savor and enjoy the wonder that surrounds us in the world.

Ben writes in a very down to earth way with a maturity beyond his years. He is connected to a generation that thinks outside the box, does not want to conform to the societal norms, and wants to make a true difference as a result of doing things differently. I noticed throughout the book that some see optimism as an idea that isn't based on the real world, you CAN be optimistic, while at the same time, admitting life isn't always perfect. It means latching onto the hope we have in Christ and pushing that hope outward, changing the culture in the process.

I was excited to read an early review PDF thanks to Harvest House. All opinions are my own.

God's miracle indeed that I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher.
If you know the darkness of depression, or know someone who has, allow God to intercede while Ben leads you on an encouraging journey of hope!
Jesus walked the earth human, choosing to use his God given power of discernment, to focus and remain strong in matters of eternity having faith that God’s Grace would carry Him through.
He did NOT remain wallowing in the heartbreak of the moment. He continued to display the true heart of His ABBA DADDY and follow through until it was finished.
To show us how.
Optimisfits is not written by a random, silver spoon dude all ‘hopped up’ on the idea of Jesus and the legalism of religion, being blind to the real sufferings of others.
Ben Courson is a linguistic profit displaying tangible life struggles and circumstances that could have even the strongest mind questioning God’s heart. Ben spits truth into your wounds. It hurts so good.
Optimisfits is an invitation into Ben’s personal journey of GOD’S HOPE through a heavenly understanding of scripture and science. A greater wisdom that some things are simply beyond understanding and that the effect of things we CAN KNOW will certainly pull our generation out of the darkness! We are called to shimmer in the shadows! To show others how. Squad up. Join us.

So, I was privileged to be apart of a launch team for this book, and thus I was able to get a pre released e-copy! It has been soooo amazing. There are so many things in here that will blow your mind, make you think about your mind, and make you laugh soo hard. It was much like Bens other books, but much longer and even more full of hope and redefining..... life as we know it really! I encourage anyone who reads it to be prepared for some radical ideas, laughs, realizations, and... I suppose I could liken it to a flash of light, just a burst of refreshing optimism!!!! Always remember though that this hope is never found anywhere but in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and it requires a lot of surrender and trust. But it is the best possible thing you could do for yourself and the world!
WARNING: This book may cause the reader to want to start dancing and/or go do something out of the ordinary, go share this with someone else, transform the world, or I don't know, LOW KEY WORLD DOMINATION!!!! MWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
All opinions are my own and now it's up to you to go taste and see what hope can look like. May this book lead you to the source of all things good.

I'm giving this book 3.5 stars. Honestly, I'm having a really hard time rating this book.

To me, some of the chapters were too in-your-face and the author's ideas were too out-there for me to really relate. And then, some of the chapters were inspiring, interesting and thought-provoking. So I did read it to the end.

I'm not sure if I was the intended audience. I feel at might have been aimed towards younger people (teens to late teens perhaps) and it might be why it didn't always seat right with me. Yet, I think the author has some really important things to say in his book, but it would have been nice if he didn't make the readers feel like the only good way to live their lives is to live it exactly like he does.

A Source Of Great Hope:

I just finished Ben Courson‘s book Optimisfits and I’m feeling hopeful and inspired.

He writes to Gen Z and Gen Y, millennials and centennials. His book is written to give hope and to inspire those generations and anyone else who’s “struggling and confused and just plain tired of it all.” Curiously, even though his book doesn’t prescribe solutions to depression directly, in the depression category it’s ranking is high on Amazon.

If you’ve ever struggled with depression; or if you’ve ever felt misunderstood by your family, friends, and others around you; if you’ve shared your dreams and had people respond in a dismissive or disparaging way, you’ll find hope and encouragement and inspiration from Optimisfits.

Inspiration From A Variety Of Topics:

Courson writes frankly about his own struggles: betrayal from the one closest to him, the death of his sister, the imminent death of his brother, and his ten year battle with depression. He’s transparent to the point where he even discusses a time when he considered suicide.

He writes about how he doesn’t fit in with the world, or with traditional church culture and how that’s a good thing because it’s in our uniqueness that God can best use each of us.

In the science chapter we learn that the most famous of subatomic particles, the electron, doesn’t orbit the nucleus of an atom as we were taught in school, but rather it leaps from one point to another, it teletransports if you will. A quantum leap. And we learn that if you blew up an atom to the size of a football stadium, its nucleus would be the size of a grain of rice, but the grain of rice would weigh more than the stadium. And we learn that a neutron star can weigh 200 billion tons and fit inside a teaspoon.

One of my favorite chapters is titled My Heroes. Here Courson describes a man who “got kicked out of his job as a pastor because some members of the board of elders thought he put too much emphasis on God’s love. He believed that God was more generous and grace-filled than some people’s ‘orthodox’ theology could accommodate.

That man was George MacDonald.

He also lists as his heroes G. K. Chesterton, Billy Graham, and Alexander the Great.’

Courson writes of these men: “None of my heroes chose the safe route. None of them were normal. None of them settled for small successes. So, if life is a battle, let’s take our place alongside our Heavenly King. We are childlike, we are faithful, we are brave.

“And we are just a little foolhardy…in the best possible way.”

The description of Alexander the Great is part of a tone that’s felt throughout the book, and it’s a tone of rebellion. Rebellion against expectations imposed on us by the people around us or by our culture in general that isn’t essential to what Jesus wants from his followers. Courson writes of Optimisfits: “We want to rebel against both the culture of hopelessness…and against the culture of vanilla-flavored Churchianity.” In another place he writes, “Our job is to find whatever doesn’t represent heaven on earth, and, well, vanquish it!”

He also writes of famous misfits like Walt Disney, who, early in his career, had a boss fire him as a cartoonist because “Disney lacks imagination . . .” And he writes of less famous misfits like his friend Cam who makes movies — but doesn’t watch movies.

What Sets Optimisfits Apart?

Courson’s transparency, and the place he’s writing from are what set this book apart for me. He’s been there. He’s experienced betrayal. He fought a losing battle with depression for a decade. He lost his sister at a young age. And he recently lost his older brother.

He shared his dreams with others and they didn’t get it.

And they didn’t get him.

So when he shares, what he has to say has a weight and a level of credibility that’s rare.

My Take:

Optimisfits spoke to me directly. Depression and pursuing a dream and being criticized for it have been two points of struggle for me personally. Even today there are people close to me who don’t understand why I do what I do on God Running, and on social media. So Courson’s book was food for my soul.

His topics are eclectic. His writing style is stream of consciousness. But it comes together in a way that’s engaging and inspiring.

I came away from the book filled with hope and courage.

If you’re struggling with depression, or doubt, or if you’re feeling isolated and alone, or if your dreams are ridiculed and rejected, you’ll take hope from Optimisfits.

On his website Ben Courson defines the term Optimisfit as,

“a nonconformist, an adventurer, a person who lives with wild abandon, childlike wonder, and unapologetic optimism.

“You were never meant to fit in. You were made to stand out.”

After reading this book, I want to join them.

I received an advance copy from the publisher and just finished Optimisfits. Ah, where do I begin on this book! I am recommending Optimisfits to everyone I know. Actually, I take that back I already have, so now I’m recommending it to everyone I don’t know. I believe this book should be in the hands of everyone young and old. It’s a beautiful combination of whimsical, yet real. It’s a raw uncut diamond, a jewel waiting to be seen by all. Optimisfits encourages us to not conform to the cookie cutter society, but to truly be who God has made us to be. We are not meant to be stressed and depressed, we are meant to laugh in the face of fear and enjoy the life we have. I am confident in my guarantee that you will not regret reading Optimisfits.

Ben's Courson's new book "Optimisfits" is much like life itself - a swiftly moving river with all kinds of twists, turns, shallows, rapids, and thrilling waterfalls. Life's river speeds us on towards an unknown delta and beyond. Ben's book challenges us to hang on and enjoy the ride - with enthusiasm, expectation, hope, and love. Love of God, His creation, each other, and every experience we encounter. Even in the dark times, the lonely times, the heart-wrenching times, Ben shows us how to have hope and joy because we belong to the One eternally seated on His throne. And just around the next bend or over the next waterfall, God has unimaginable blessings waiting for us.
Ben's writing style is quirky and unique. It speeds up, then slows down. It takes you to a high mountaintop panoramic view, then dives down to a more lengthy explanation of a specific concept or example. To be honest, it took about 10 chapters for me to jump on board with his thought process. And it took to the very end of the book for me to finally understand why the book is written the way it is. (I'm not going to explain further, because SPOILERS.)
I knew nothing about Ben before reading "Optimisfits". I still don't know his life story. This is not a straightforward memoir, but snippets of his life experiences are sprinkled throughout. Just enough to want to sit down for an afternoon with him and have an engaging conversation about God, the Bible, life, and hope. Ben's intelligence, wit, and compassion are on full display in this fast compelling read. I ended the book with a smile on my face and hope in my heart. I hope that you will as well.
I received an advance copy from the publisher and all opinions are my own.

I am so grateful to Harvest House Publishers for the ARC of this book, via NetGalley. This review expresses my personal opinion

I must say I didn't have expectations regarding this book. First time I heard of Ben Courson, so I was waiting to be amazed. And I was, what a great book!

Growing up in the church so many times I ask myself if preachers or, leaders in general, had normal struggles as anyone else has. And one of the things I truly love about this book is the level of honesty and transparency. Especially about his depression. I remember when I was seventeen I had a period of depression and I was not able to be honest and had to deal with tons of guilt, I was Christian: How is it possible to feel that way?. So to read his story I truly found it refreshing and so necessary in this era that religion in many churches still the center of them. And so many are still looking for a life with meaning.

In my opinion, I believe this book is more than just hope and be just an Optimisfist. It's to live a full and complete free life in Christ. I think this book could and should be read for anyone, but is important to have an open mind. Ben Courson, is different. And in my opinion, that's ok. The book is a good balance, it has a good verse, great quotes, and several funny personal situations. If someone asks me, give me just three words that describe the book I will say: Uncommon, Unexpected and Unusual. So, take the leap and read this book. You won't regret it, and you know it may change your life.

I liked the basic thesis of this book a lot. He makes some interesting points and I can get behind the hopeful rebellion he champions. But the tone and style drove me crazy and in the end it seemed to lack depth. He overused the one sentence, one line paragraph so much they started to lose their power for me.

It is also woefully bereft of women heroes and friends. Where are the female optimisfits? It seems like a very bro-centric culture.

Edited to add: it’s like Schmidt from the New Girl became a Christian and couldn’t stop yelling about it.

‘Optimisfits: Igniting a Fierce Rebellion Against Hopelessness’ by Ben Courson

Spending a portion of the book quoting and attributing to the likes of G.K. Chesterton, George MacDonald, Billy Graham, Alexander the Great … Ben talks about how none of his heroes chose the safe route.

I liked his upbeat manner and curiosity. I got the real sense that this is Ben’s life. What I was less patient with was the many “squad” references, abundant clichés, and slang. I think he was trying to get cool points when they weren’t always needed. Overall, an energetic, hopeful, and refreshing read and I love the positivity and fearless approach to life and the church.

Optimisfit, n: a nonconformist, an adventurer, a person who lives with wild abandon, childlike wonder, and unapologetic optimism. Ben Courson proudly seizes his status as an outsider and urges us to do the same, saying we were never meant to fit in. We were made to stand out. #hopeisdope

~"Christians often quote, “The Lord gives, the Lord takes away, blessed be the name of the Lord.” But God didn’t say that. Job did. And Job said a lot of skewed things.”

~ "The only way to do battle with a debilitating pessimism is to embrace a fanatical optimism. When you can be absurdly optimistic in the face of all the things that seem to be arrayed against you, you take away all their power to control your emotions, your decisions and your sense of happiness."

~ “God does not endure you. He Enjoys you.”

~ "What, you ask, is an Optimisfit? Well, as the name implies, it is someone who embraces his or her misfit identity and doesn’t neatly fit inside the comfortable religious box… but who manages to hold onto a wildly optimistic view of life even in the face of all the darkness around us.
The Optimisfit knows that life doesn’t come with nice, neat right angles.
We are the antiestablishment. Rebels. Dreamers. We choose to live like Jesus. Like Him, if we are going to offend anyone it will be the religious people. We love them but we aren’t going to cater to them. We aren’t vanilla. We are extreme.
We are all about having fun. We believe that fun is what will change the world. And we want to change the world.
My friends and I are living a different kind of life with God. We are embracing a different kind of optimism. Not wishful thinking, not just positive thinking, but transcendent thinking.
We aim to transcend both the church optimism that is out in the weeds, as well as the atheistic pessimism that leaves everyone in the dumps, but acting with a fearless hopefulness.
We refuse to let the world just happen to us. We happen to the world.
Optimisfits don’t just stand by and watch the enemy do his work. We don’t cower. We don’t try to negotiate terms with darkness. We are never hopeless. We are always fearless. We pour water on the fire of our fears. We pour gasoline on the passions of our dreams."

Ben has ministered to my broken soul and pulled me out of the depths of depression many times since I discovered him on KWAVE a year ago. I was so excited when he announced in a Monday night service that he was almost finished with his book: Optimisfits. I pre-ordered my copy but March seemed liked ages away. That being said, it has truly been a blessing to receive an advanced copy of this book by joining the launch team. Optimisfits is an amalgamation of all of my favorite sermons by Ben. So naturally, after I finished reading, I purchased more copies to hand out to family and friends, because I believe everyone should read this book! You can never have too much hope and everyone can use more of it!

Ben passionately writes with a fire for his teaching, but also (invitingly) teaches out of his own burning. This book is an intimate look into Ben's personal journey, as he shares his scars with you and invites you to feel his wounds. Because even though life is tough, our God is tougher! And He shows us that we can deal out hope to others even through our own sufferings because God works all things together for the good!

I intend to read Optimisfits again and again, like how I listen to Ben's sermons again and again. Ben's style of writing and his sense of humor keeps you glued to the pages. His unique insights of understanding God, history, and science, and how they are all inextricably intertwined is mind-blowing and really gets you thinking about things from a different perspective. Ben invites us to live a new kind of lifestyle, arguing that God is a nonconformist, adventurer living with wild abandon, childlike wonder and unapologetic optimism, which we should mirror since we are created and made in His image and likeness.

It’s time to stop looking at things as half full (optimistic) or half empty (pessimistic), and instead, look at things as overflowing and "my cup runs over" (optimisfit). It’s time to join the Squad! Adventures with Squad and adventures with God! We fight to see the beauty in all things, all around us, because in God we live, move, and have our being. He is over all, in all, and through all. We are kids of the King, chill with the Creator, and besties with the Almighty. If you want in, Optimisfits is a must-read.

Optimisfits yea or nay?

*I was given this ARC at my request and I have voluntarily left this review*

Are you ready? Here we go:
Wow just wow! I admit I didn't know what to expect when I got this book, well that's not exactly true, I wanted it to be perfect, amazing, eye-opening inspiring... So when I started reading it, what I didn't know was if it would meet my expectations or it would let me down. The pressure was on! And did I say Wow already?

From the very firsts chapters, you'll find yourself immersed inside this book. Courson's fast pace writing style will have you turning page after page.

What will you find in it? Truth told like it is packed with biblical references, science, a huge and necessary dose of hope, anecdotes and the author's passions, experiences and heart poured out on top of it.

You can see Courson's essence on every single page, sometimes he'll make you smile, sometimes he'll stop you in your tracks and others, others he'll bring tears to your eyes because he wrote something that hits too close to home. But, isn't that what we want when we read a book? A writer with the ability to touch something inside us? A writer capable to awake and ignite us?

If you don't know yet if you should read Optimisfits, let me tell you why you should: Because at the end of the day, you know just like I do, that there is much more in life than this, it has to be right? Well then, open the book and let the author lead the way... WELCOME TO THE SQUAD!

I Will Be Reading This Book Again!

Optimisfits: Igniting a Fierce Rebellion Against Hopelessness by Ben Courson, is a book that awakens my heart and mind to live a life of authenticity, truth, and impact. Ben Courson has written a book that guides readers to move beyond complacency, conformity, predictability, perfection, performance, and approval. It's about rethinking hope; being real and loving it; embracing who you are and Whose you are; and letting God take you on the adventure of a lifetime. Optimisfits is worth reading again and again, because it's time to start really living; moving away from safe thinking to a mindset that is bold and ready to turn the world upside-down with the unfathomable love of God.
Optimisfits is full of truth that draws readers closer to God, and embrace His acceptance, approval and sufficiency. Optimisfits is refreshing. I could say so much more about this inspiring book, but read it for yourself... you'll love it, and begin to live a life greater than you've ever imagined!
I am pleased to highly recommend Ben Courson's Optimisfits.

*I received an Advanced Reader's Copy of Optimisfits: Igniting a Fierce Rebellion Against Hopelessness from the publisher to read and review. The opinion stated is my own. I was not obligated to post a review. I have not been compensated in any way.*

I saw Ben Courson speaking on TV and he was delightful to listen to what he had to say so I bought his book. After reading it, I feel it is geared towards a younger person than me who may have problems dealing with the realities of this life, depression , loneliness.; however, there is a lot to like about this book even though some parts were a little quirky for me or he gets down to the level of the younger generation by referencing shows, books, etc. that they are familiar with. He does know his Bible very well and uses many examples from it to depict the Jesus who exemplifies the mission, quest that Courson is on: the mission of HOPE. we all need this don't we?
What I liked the most was his examples, stories he tells of famous historic figures of the past. He is so well read. What I didn't care for was his allusions towards the church which is for me like going home(ex: what the Bible says about religion, chp. 37) and those who attend don't always read the Bible. This attitude bothers me a bit. But on the whole it is worth reading.

The Furious Longing of Hope. Courson is a clearly well read guy who is clearly a gifted speaker and writer. The beginning and parts of the end of this book felt like they were being shouted through a megaphone, which was actually a cool experience. The overall tone of the book was reminiscent of WWE's Mojo Rawley - All Hype All The Time. And this tone interjected the book with a relentless pace that makes it a fairly quick read, even at its length. Ultimately I find myself dinging it a star due to overuse of cliche, "proof texting" - the practice of making a claim and citing a seemingly random Bible verse in support of it, and a lack of citations. I'm fine with making a claim like "scientists say blah" and moving on with your primary point, but give me the ability to go behind you and verify that they actually said blah. The message itself is great though, and many will find it needed and refreshing. Great book that just could have been better.

Optimisfits by Ben Courson is a fantastic piece of literature. This book not only encourages the reader to look beyond their personal struggles (like depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, even OCD) and exchange them for living abundantly through the life that Jesus Christ died to give those who believe in Him.

Ben Courson brings 50 chapters of material to the ready reader, and brings his work with gusto, charm, and insight. I grew up in the church and saw a lot of people who were faking to be optimistic, and being fake-happy. Ben’s fresh perspective on the super religious people, and those who are walking around without genuine joy ignites the reader’s hope, and really brought me to a personal state of realizing that it’s okay that I don’t have everything all together. Just find the joy of being enjoyed by God.

It has been a long time since I have been so encouraged by a book... a book that is easy to read yet filled with hope for those who are looking for it! I love that this book has short and simple chapters because so many times when you are feeling down, discouraged, and hopeless- you just can’t find the courage to pull out a book with long chapters and “smart” vocabulary that just makes you feel confused! This author wrote a book in a way in which his intended audience is going to respond and feel encouraged and see the hope that we can find in Jesus and a group of friends who will walk beside us!!

I wish I had had this book two years ago when dealing with the deep depression and anxiety that came from a 2nd trimester miscarriage and felt like no one understood where I was coming from and why it mattered!

To be perfectly honest, I hated this book by the end of the 10th chapter. I picked it up with an open mind, but something about those first chapters diffused that little flame of enthusiasm. I was annoyed by the seemingly trite little cliches and accounts of grand adventures that were no doubt amazing in real life, but sound hollow when described in a sentence on a page. However, I kept reading. A friend of mine said it was fabulous, and I wanted to finish it so I could talk about it with her. I'm so glad I did. By the end, I realized that the things that had annoyed me at the beginning no longer annoyed me, but encouraged me, and inspired me. Somehow by the time I finished it, this moved me in a way that inspired me to actually, truly have more hope. And that is exactly what Ben set out to do. Thank you Ben!

When Optimisfits arrived in my mailbox, I knew that I was about to embark on an adventure. I grew up in the church, but I grew tired of the politics and gossip that surrounded me. As an empath, the negativity fed in to my depression and anxiety; and I fell away from the church. As I read Optimisfits, I began to connect instantly. I began letting go of my past, and I recently dipped my toes back into the water. I have become involved in a new church, have connected with some amazing people, and have participated in life changing volunteer opportunities. Optimisfits has encouraged me to keep my eyes on the prize, and that Grace will get me through my race.

Once I finished Optimisfits, I downloaded the App for Hope Generation and I loop in throughout my day. Ben Courson is an amazing author, pastor, and a gift to those who struggle.

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

I entered because I liked the premise; I didn't realize that it was a pseudo-religious book as well, which would have turned my decision to enter into the contest from a yes to a no. That said, Courson's the first accidental Christian book that I've one that didn't feel like he was attempting to shove Jesus down your throat...so that's a positive - sort of? Nixing the Jesus, this book had a conversational style, and parts were quite interesting, like the Van Goh bit. However, this book is a prime example of why older adults shouldn't try to use slang. It comes across as a little kid desperately wanting to be included, and it's rather sad. Better if he'd used his own slang, which would have made the writing flow better. It's so much "try" and not enough "do." Cover's pretty though. Definitely needs a good content editing.

Recieved an advanced copy from the publisher.
Couldnt help smiling throughout while reading the book. Ben's message is about being free....
If your christian walk is all drudgy then you are walking it all wrong. Message: take life a little less seriously...Optimisfits is about focus...finding purpose...enjoying God's love.
More so the message is real... you'd be crazy to cook it all up if u havent gone through half the stuff Ben's gone through and the best thing of all.. he has Hope. No one has that kind hope in such dingy conditions unless... they've found the source of All Hope, the God of Hope Himself, Jesus Christ. Thanks be to Him who makes everything beautiful in His own time including this great work! Enjoy reading!
PS: if you are not rebel, dont touch😄

I'm in my life journey right now where I am about to fight the system, the educational system. Despite uncertainties, future conflicts and discouragement from others (that I can't do it), I am still hopeful that God is and will be at work. I refuse to let this broken, depressing, fear-based system continue. I want others to feel how freeing and fun it is to let go of control and trust how God designed us to learn.

I'm just about to start, but hopefully when I come back to this review/comment in the future, I'll be in the position where in I can proudly say, "GOD'S LOVE WINS!" But until then, I'll definitely reread the book in this journey to spark this insuppressible hope I have to bring heaven down to earth.

Ben Courson is an amazing writer, bottom line. I was very lucky to have been given a chance to read a pre release copy of this book, and I can’t wait to re read it again when it is released! This book was encouraging in a light fire under you way. In his words “you are valuable, you are beautiful. Just as you are”. This book reiterates how much God loves you and how much he works through our doubt more than our faith. I also loved how he talked about how powerful self talk is, because the words we think, become the words we say, which then become the actions we undertake, which become habits, and then they transform our lifestyle. Boom.
Read this book. You won’t be disappointed.

I received an advanced copy from the publisher and just finished Optimisfits. This book was so timely for me, and I found myself saying throughout "This is exactly what the Lord has been telling me lately". I took my time reading so I could really think over the chapters. We have got to remember through our dark days, that HE is our hope. Get the book, pray while you read and get to know Him as our God of hope.
From the book:
"No matter how much I mess things up, no matter how bad the situation might be, no matter how much it feels like I am trapped in a corner and things don’t look good my hope is in a God who says that the battle belongs to Him. He has never lost yet."

Optimisfits is a must read for anyone with a heartbeat! This is such a great book and I especially love the term "hope dealer". I've noted so many great nuggets from this book and will be purchasing copies for all the young adults in my life to help them see that they can remain hopeful in all that life throws at them. My favorite..."The only way to do battle with a debilitating pessimism is to embrace a fanatical optimism. When you can be absurdly optimistic in the face of all the things that seem to be arrayed against you, you take away all their power to control your emotions, your decisions and your sense of happiness." I received an advanced copy and this is my own opinion.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!

First let me say, when I purchased it, I thought I was too old for it. I mean it's written by a 30 something. I'm in my 60's.

No, I am not too old. LOL

I love the style, the paragraphs being seperated on the the page. It makes me think the author is sitting at the table, talking to me. Filling me with joy and hope.

I read a chapter or two or three at a time.

This book is common sense, biblical, and just joy filled.

I'm leaving it on the coffee table and re-reading it, over and over. I know I missed something, I was so anxious to get it all read. But I don't want to miss anything.

I'm off to buy copies for all 4 of my children.
