A Llewellyn book that doesn't immediately make me want to chuck it against a wall? It's a crystalline miracle.
THE BOOK OF CRYSTAL BOOKS is exactly what it says on the cover: a straightforward collection of spells, rituals, and associations related to crystals, stones, and the like. The author assumes that the reader already has a good grasp on mainstream witchcraft, but none of the material within is particularly difficult to follow. The organization of the text is top-notch, and the instructions waste no time in getting to the point. The more complicated aspects of rocks and minerals are explained very well, and the author's personal anecdotes never feel out of place or go on too long. Incorporating crystal magic into every level of everyday life is the clear goal of the book, and in that regard, it succeeds admirably.
The only serious criticism to be made is that it often tells the reader to "remember" or "keep in mind" something that either a) isn't explained for another 20-30 pages, or b) is never touched on again, period. The author also jumps to conclusions without explaining their logic, which can be bewildering for beginners or annoying to experienced practitioners with different viewpoints. These are only minor problems at the end of the day, but they did appear very frequently. For witches concerned about Llewellyn's reputation for cultural appropriation, it should also be noted that chakras and totems are incorporated into a small handful of spells.
All in all, THE BOOK OF CRYSTAL SPELLS is a handy reference book for almost any mainstream witch. Highly recommended to anyone who finds themselves lacking in the earth department.

A big thank you to the publisher for gifting me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review! I'm always so thankful to have these opportunities!
This book is a spellbook that helps you connect with crystals, stones - and sand! I think that the use of sand in this book is one of the most unique things that it has to offer. It was published/released in 2013 and I still have yet to find another book that has used sand as a magical correspondence. It could be out there, I don't know every book that's out there, of course, but I'm seriously impressed with the out of the box thinking that Grant displayed there.
One of the things that I am unimpressed with is the use of chakras, the term "smudging" and other appropriative things - I do understand that in 2013 there was less pressure to change the problematic language, but it still grates on me. That said the author does make a note that coral and ivory shouldn't be sought after based on the overharvesting of the coral reefs, and ivory as it's most commonly from poached elephant tusks should obviously not be sought out.
I appreciate that the chapters are divided into purpose, rather than based on stone type. There's a chapter on jewelry, talismans, and amulets, for example.
Starting with cleansing rituals was a fine choice - I do like how the author gives several examples, complete with chants. I appreciate that some folks might not know where to begin, or how to go about creating these mini rituals, so this will be especially helpful for beginners.
As I've been doing this for well over a decade now, this chapter wasn't as helpful to me as I already have set practices, but having a nice refresher was appreciated either way.
Throughout the book we have chapters quite like this. Good information, some pre-written material and the invitation to create the material that resonates with us.
I'm giving this 5/5 Triquetras for a solid book that should be on every crystal witch's shelf!

I bought this book 5 years ago and devoured it in one sitting. I was especially excited about the chapter "Sand and Glass Spells", as I had never considered using sand prior but it made so much sense.
I have since committed a tremendous amount of time not only studying crystals but using them for healing and manifesting. So reading it again 5 years later I find much of the information rather elementary. I am very glad to have had the book and found it quite useful, but I don't think it is something I am going to keep on my shelves. Excellent choice for those new to crystals and/or want to explore the subject in more depth.

High praise since I normally don't give 4 starts to pagan books, but as simple as this book was to read, it was informative and interesting. It has lots of good information and starting points for peeps wanting to get into crystal magick and it doesn't try to cover 101 in other areas.
It will make a great reference book too.

Easy to read
Easy to read and a decent introduction to some of the basics of working with crystals. A bit basic possibly if you're already now familiar with crystal spells and such though.

There is a lot of interesting information in here, but the spell part fell kind of flat for me because there were not a lot of different ones, and the ones mentioned called for specific crystals that didn't seem to have room for much switching with crystals one might already own.

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. It is pretty comprehensive and I feel as though I learned a lot in this easy to read book. It is both informative and interesting, a combination that is not easy to achieve. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone interested in crystals and/or with interest in magic. Some great spell ideas in here!

A very helpful book for those who are interested in working with crystals that explains how to properly use crystals in spellwork. I particularly liked that it was geared more towards those of us who have already established a foundation in magickal work--I've read a thousand and one 101 books, and it was great to read a book that didn't assume I needed a primer!

Even though I'm giving this book 3 stars, I still really liked the book. It's kind of hard for me to rate a "how to" book, because while Ember Grant, had some really wonderful ideas for crystals and their uses and she had some minor anecdotes, but I still found myself not necessarily gripped, as it were.

What a great resource! This book has TONS of information and ideas. There's so much, I'm going to have to borrow it again (library e-book) to transfer the notes I'm taking to my computer. The author gives explanations, ideas, spells, rituals, etc. I highly recommend this book, especially for those practicing the occult and who love stones. It will become a much-used resource book in my home.
