Over 1,300 Al-Anon members willingly shared their stories. They tell how their views and practices of intimacy, including sexual intimacy, were affected by alcoholism, and how Al-Anon’s tools and spiritual principles helped them change these views and practices. Courageous members share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. “Intimacy in Alcoholic Relationships”, is the hope that many other members can find hope and inspiration in expanding their recovery.
This is a very short read, part of the conference approved literature in Al Anon/AA. I found it helpful in navigating a very difficult problem, but helped me understand some of the dysfunction I was experiencing. Trust is the foundation of any relationship, and is incredibly important for some of our most intimate relationships - but addiction will be the constant mistress chipping away at the trust later. Ultimately, everyone’s journey is their own and there isn’t a magic fix or a decision that works for everyone. This book helped me get perspective on my situation and make the decision I needed to for serenity and happiness in my life.
Intimacy is about being able to share one's real, true self, with another person, whoever that might be. Many types and levels of intimacy and relationships are covered in this collection of personal stories from members of Al-Anon. Truly, any person could read, and benefit, from these sharings and perspectives.
Intimacy in Alcoholic Relationships by Al-Anon is a valuable guide for those navigating the complexities of relationships affected by alcoholism. Still, it also speaks to anyone on a journey of self-discovery or spiritual growth.
The book is divided into six parts, Part One: Alcoholism and Intimacy Part Two: Building and Rebuilding Trust Part Three: Communicating Openly Part Four: Negotiating Boundaries Part Five: Spiritual Solutions Part Six: Expressing Gratitude
