Deep Cosmos by Project Kyle is a unique sci-fi adventure that moves fast and fearlessly!

I'm not normally into sci-fi books, but I was intrigued when Project Kyle approached me to read this book. Deep Cosmos is a nerdy, science-y, fun book that with awesome friendships, wicked twists and turns, and lots of lore riddled throughout it.

It gave me Star Wars vibes with the friendships and adventures they go on. It also reminded me of Star Trek for some of the lore. I feel like lovers of science fiction will absolutely love this book!

But, did I absolutely love it? No. Keep in mind I'm not a sci-fi junkie, so I was never going to have my socks knocked off by the book. Can I say I thoroughly enjoyed it and want more? Yes! Project Kyle is an excellent author with so much potential. I can only imagine how much better his books are going to get in the future if this is where he's starting himself in the publishing world.

There are times where I feel some major cheese factor. Some of Sophia's lines do not feel... organic. They seem forced and not what most ladies would say. That's the biggest con for me, since her lines brought me out of the fictional world at times. It doesn't ruin the book by any means, but it did have me giggling a little.

I hope this book gets some sequels or a little more love in the future. I can tell this story can go much further than what was explored in this book. I think readers would love to see this world expanded on as well.

Overall, this quality book by Project Kyle is a must read for sci-fi lovers!

Four out of five stars.

I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

Okay here goes... while this book has a lot of potential, I did see a lot of flaws and errors in it.
The premise of the story is very intriguing, however I felt like there should have been a little bit more character and story introduction. If this was a second book in a series I wouldn't have had this problem. But since it is the first I am having issues with it. and because of this issue I was not really able to connect with any of the characters.
The action-packed scenes are very fun to read, however I also felt like there wasn't enough downtime in order to catch your breath in between the action scenes. This can lead too overwhelming the reader.
The main character was likable yes, but I really felt like he had a Superman thing going on with the glasses. I found myself saying "Come on, seriously?" more than a few times.
I also found some editing errors that need to be addressed. Things like grammatical errors should be edited out before publishing the book.
With all things considered I feel a little editing and some tweaking of the story would make this book a great read. It definitely has the potential to be so.
Once everything is fixed I would definitely recommend this to anybody who likes action-packed sci-fi stories.

Here's the thing, I've struggled with being more critical in my reviews in the past, but that's helping no one, and I don't want to lie and say I enjoyed a book more than I did because I'm worried my review will hurt someone's feelings.

This wasn't a "bad" book by any means, it did however read a bit like a first draft to me, with lots of promise, but work to be done.

When I started this, I immediately felt like I was missing something. I felt as though I were thrust into this world that I should've already known about prior to reading this, but I didn't, so I ended up feeling quite a bit of confusion instead.

The characters were interesting to read about, but weren't fully fleshed out, and while I enjoy a book with lots of action, there wasn't really a whole lot of room to breathe in between chapters.

That being said, I would definitely give this author another shot in the future, and I'm looking forward to seeing what else they can come up with.

Happy reading! ♡

*Book provided by the author in exchanged of an honest review*

It was an entertaining plot, it kept me reading for hours. I think the story really has pontential, the writting was a bit clumsy though.
But I must say it was an easy read and it's packed with action.
There were some bits that I didn't like much, but they were details, they can be "ignored" because there's always something happening, so it's a story that's always moving and always developing.

Congrats on your first book and I hope you keep working on that amazing imagination that you have!

*Thank you so much to the author for giving me an e-arc of his book in exchange of my honest review*

First of all I think is important to mention that the sci-fi aspect of this book was incredible! I really enjoyed all the uncommon creatures and the space travel, I could almost feel I was there with them watching all those things come to live. Moreover, I loved the final message that the author leaves us with and it was that it all can get better and that there is hope for everyone which I think is the most important aspect of this book.

description

However, I couldn't quite connect with the characters. Sophia being the one I disliked the most, she was just so bossy and she came out as rude to everyone. Also, she was supposed to be these scary warrior but she wasn't that at all, she was always the last one that would stand up to fight. Then we also have the space thug which at first I liked because he was the sarcastic and funny character but then we come to a place that shows your deepest desire in this world and while everyone else had really meaningful things showed he only had a statue of himself which was too over the top and made him feel less real and one dimensional.

Our main character, David, was a nice character but there were a couple of times where I couldn't believe how much he spoke, like he would literally have a dialogue of an entire paragraph multiple times in a single chapter. And also,

The main conflict was pretty entertaining and I liked reading some of the fight scenes, others were just too unrealistic . And the ending was quite amusing and intriguing, I can only imagine how many adventures David and his friends can have.

description

Another thing I liked were some pictures and drawing we get to see throughout this book, it helped me a lot to picture the things happening and how some characters would look like.

All in all, I think the main issue I had with this book were the characters that I couldn't like and for me liking the characters is a big aspect when rating a book therefore I can't give it a better rating. However, if that wouldn't be a big problem for you I would recommend this to anyone that likes reading about different words and creatures mixed with a kind of space police.

***I RECEIVED AN ARC FROM THE AUTHOR IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW***
3.5 stars
DNF at 80 pages
First of all: Big thank you to Project Kyle for sending me an ARC I really appreciate it. This was my first ARC that I have received an I have to say I wasn't a huge fan, am not usually a science-fiction/ psychological thriller type of girl and I felt like this book kinda fell flat for me. I am really sad to say that I did not finish the book because I really really wanted to enjoy it and have fun reading it but unfortunately I did not have that experience. However here is my honest opinion on the first 80 or so pages:

First off, I felt like the characters weren't very developed and that I didn't really find myself getting attached to the characters in a way that I do with most books. I felt like if Nerd accidentally feel off his space ship into the great black depths of outer space I wouldn't be affected by that because I wasn't emotionally or mentally attached to the characters.

I also felt like at times it was a little cheesy and that the characters weren't really facing any big problems (in the first 80 pages at least) For example, when they were trying to escape after the hunters had gotten Sophia and Nerd and they are in a jail cell and the hunters took everything except for the Rubik's cube I felt like it was too easy and then the magically meet Henry, the criminal in the other cell and they all escape and then magically walk into an armory where they have weapons and then they fight the bad guys. I just felt that the author could have made Henry older and grumpy and maybe Henry doesn't want to help them and tell them where to go and they have to convince him or something like that I just felt like the characters had very easy conflicts and solutions and it wasn't very exciting, at least for me.
To me it felt like this:
'oh no! I'm trapped in a jail cell what ever should I do?' (in a dry Dora The Explorer like voice)
'i know use I'll the Rubik's cube that isn't actually a Rubik's cube and is actually a bomb'
'yay! That was easy'
'now we're free hooray!'
I know that might not make sense but again this was just my opinion of what I read.

Once again thank you so so much for the ARC it was the first ARC I had ever received so I was over the moon excited to read it and I'm sorry but I just didn't really like it as much as I wanted to. It started off great but kinda slid downhill from there.

*I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.*

So where should I start the story itself is great and the flow of the book was good but I needed a few chapters to get into it. The characters are likeable but are not fully developed f0r me.

You can feel the passion of the author for the book which always is a big plus but I sometimes couldn't see the scences which are described in the books. I don't know what it was what my head was missing maybe more detailed describtions or I don't know. Also sometimes it was hard for me to grab the why of the decisions the protagonists made.

well written book but I would love to see more of the protagonists :)

This book was a compelling and action packed story. I loved the characters and how their personalities developed over time. Nerd’s humor is so dry and I love it 😂 The pictures were also very good, just as a side note! 😊 All that said, looking back on it, I realize that despite all the compelling action scenes and fun characters, I feel like the plot itself was lacking slightly. The story started out with one main villain, and then just kind of threw it away for the other half, even if he did return at some point, I still feel like he should have been the main villain for at least the first book. But it was a fun read and I enjoyed it 😃

Deep Cosmos 3.5⭐️

Sophia is special and betrayed by someone that claimed to her. On the operating table about to be cut open she is saved by a mad man,Nerd. He gets her out only to have her questioning everything she once thought she knew.

Nerd, Henry and Sophia go on an adventure and become friends and allies and yada yada.

I love Nerd. Okay so he starts off as this sort of robotic mechanic character that is just doing his job. But we see him open up and have a real heart. Then he becomes a mushy mess and, he was just adorable.

Getting into the story was a bit confusing. We are thrown into the world and told nothing except that Sophia is special and Crimson is a horrible human being trying to kill her. The story continues and we are told alot of information but put together I was still confused. (Our main character Sophia is confused as well so I thought maybe we are supposed to be confused).

So if you like syfy I think you will really enjoy this. I liked it, it was good but I think if I was a syfy person...
I enjoyed the characters and the story was intriguing to a point.

Well this was a colorful, kind of zany adventure I didn’t expect.

description

I have a lot to say about this book. Some good, and some not-so-good, so I’ll get right into it.

First off I think that although “science fiction” is definitely the category this book fits into, I found myself struggling for the best way to describe this book to others. Short hand it’s a retro-esque space opera with beautiful damsels in distress, bizarre aliens, and heroic underdogs facing twisted villains. And if I were to compare, I’d call it a science fiction thriller that has a bit of Star Trek, Doctor Who, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Alan Dean Foster’s Pip and Flynx series, a sprinkling of Indiana Jones, and world building that is reminiscent of SyFy’s Defiance series if Defiance physically left the isolation of Earth’s setting and explored the galaxy a bit.

The Good

I was pleasantly surprised to find very few technical errors—I only found two misspellings through the whole book (and in the book’s heading on Goodreads saying “Cosmose” instead of “Cosmos”)—and the grammar was good overall, which is something that is rarely seen in self-published first novels. The pacing was also pretty spot on. I didn’t feel like the plot was going too fast or too slow.

This author really cares about these characters—which I believe is the number one thing a writer NEEDS to get right before they even put pen to paper. And Project Kyle knows his characters like he knows himself. I could feel a whole universe of origins yet to be told behind the main plot, and although Kyle gives us samples of some of the characters’ pasts, he never info dumps or gives us character information that may distract from the main story (although I personally would have enjoyed a bit more backstory for characters like Nerd, Experiment-1, and Alcanore, but that’s just a bit of guilty pleasure). As for the characters, Kyle gives us a very assorted cast. From humans to snake people to tall warrior bug-like men he has a place for each and complicated feelings that are sourced from origin stories that we only get small tastes of in this first book of Deep Cosmos. (Also, I was curious to where the author got his inspiration from for character design—especially for The Watcher).

description

The only character we get to know well is Kyle’s protagonist David Bell (aka Nerd) who suffers from the effects of autism. This is where I really stepped back and was forced to shed whatever skepticism and judgement I had and just listen. Through a monologue given by Nerd Kyle’s feelings and point of view on mental illness are revealed:

”Having autism is not horrible! It’s just been greatly misunderstood by humanity…I don’t let my autism define me, just as where you were born or what race you are may not define you…I am light years ahead of you in some ways, but lightyears behind in others.”

I had a problem connecting with some of the characters because they can be a bit melodramatic. But in the situation of The Nerd I related big time.

My little brother is a high-functioning autistic—specifically with a mild form of Asperger’s syndrome much like David Bell in Deep Cosmos. And to hear and watch as David Bell explained himself and struggled with his emotions immediately made me think of my little brother. Because my brother is high-functioning, most people don’t know he even has autism but he has to pace himself and plan out what he can handle in a week or a day otherwise he gets very emotional from being overwhelmed or too frustrated. This is exactly how The Nerd acts when he gets frustrated or overwhelmed with worry.

Project Kyle mentions in the acknowledgements that he “understands the battle [with mental illness and depression] all too well,” but he never mentions if he actually has it or not. I can’t help but believe Kyle put himself in the place of David Bell with how deep and detailed Nerd’s description was of what it’s like living with autism. Very few books have made me stop critiquing and appreciate the how the author is able to explain his feelings and struggles through his characters.

The Not-So-Good

This still needs a LOT of work.

Although the story, pacing, and technical details were well constructed, I had an extremely hard time getting pass the writing style.

The whole narrative is very omniscient in a God point of view so the characters all share time in their heads simultaneously rather than individually; examples are things like characters knowing exactly what other characters are thinking pretty much all the time (which I’m pretty sure people don’t know exactly what others are thinking all the time) so two or three characters will share perspectives in one paragraph.

She began to walk off, when suddenly, she felt a shift in Nerd’s thinking. His attention seemed to turn, and he began to process the things she had told him.
--Chapter 13.

How would she “feel” a shift in his thinking? This kind of descriptive writing is part of the narration’s formula so it’s throughout the whole book. There is also excessive uses of the words “seemed” before describing almost everything, and “obviously” when situations aren’t always obvious to the characters or reader. I felt like the author was holding my hand through the whole book, afraid that I wouldn’t understand, even going so far as to explain to me that he was using symbolism and foreshadowing instead of letting me figure it out.

description

Another thing that I had a hard time skimming over was the melodrama. I mentioned earlier that the characters were a bit over emotional. Kyle recovered that in Nerd’s case by explaining that Nerd struggled with his emotions. But when every other side character has potent feelings swelling out and overflowing at the small mention of someone in danger it’s too much. I felt like every new character who joined the team got attached to the others very quickly and much crying and fury ensued depending on the situation.

Conclusion

Overall, Deep Cosmos is what it is: A space adventure.

I think if the author takes the time to rewrite the manuscript through a few more revisions this could truly be something great.

And I did relate to this on an emotional level, which is one of the things Project Kyle intended, so thumbs up for that. There’s a lot of good here, it just needs some sweeping and polishing before it turns into a final product.

Oh, and I did catch the strange, blacked-out hint about not trusting the narrator which is, in fact, a “he.” So, I’m not sure what that’s about but I’m sure it has to do with the rest of the series.

I received my first ever arc and have to say it was such a fantastic read. I don’t normally read sci fi but this book certainly takes you on many adventures and plays with your mind.

I absolutely love the main character David; his mysteriousness and social awkwardness works so well and I loved the development of his friendship with Sophia.
I felt the action really began in chapter 7 onwards where things got a lot more exciting and I struggled to put the book down.

The added illustrations were also really good!

I was given a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I'm giving this story a 2.5 out of 5.

I find this story to have a lot of potential. I think if the colorful cast of characters had been fleshed out a little more, and if the plot hadn't been as rushed, this could have been a real winner. However, I have a few comments and criticisms to make about various parts of this book.

First, I think there was little bit too much detail put into describing characters. I don't think it's necessary to give a character's exact height and weight. "Show, don't tell." This would have really helped descriptions flow a little better and not feel so abrupt in the story. Every character was described exactly, which included specific descriptions of their clothing, and it really didn't allow the reader to use their imagination at all.

Second, the characters themselves really didn't feel... real. I felt as if a lot of the dialogue was forced and they made really strange decisions. The dialogue itself had way too many exclamation points, in my opinion. I mean honestly, it didn't feel like the characters had individual personalities, other than Nerd. And I often found myself wondering why a character would make such a weird decision, given the information they have on the world around them...

Third, I think the text messaging aspect of the book felt really odd. It didn't quite fit for me and I feel there might have been a better way to include it in the story. Same with the "translator device," I think that was really convenient and the author could have really went the distance with different languages and communication between species.

Fourth, one technical aspect that really bothered me was that a space station was described as old, because the outside was rusting. Metal doesn't rust in space, because there's no oxygen. Maybe the author could have done just a little more research into the science of space. I think that's important for all sci-fi authors.

Fifth, I really didn't like how autism was included. There's a way to do it and I think it was glossed over and could have been fleshed out a lot better.

My last little criticism is that I think this story could have just used some more editing and proofreading. There was one point where "Sophia" turned into "Sofia," which is a simple error that could have been corrected with proofreading.

Overall, I think if this story went through a few more rounds of editing, it really has the potential to be something great. And to be honest, the whole time I was reading this, I kept thinking that it would make an amazing comic book/graphic novel. I think the whole crazy dynamic between Nerd and Experiment-1 would really work well in picture/dialogue format. Something to consider, I think it would be a great direction for this story :)

3.5 stars!

*ARC generously provided by the author in exchange of an honest review*

Oh, wow... I never thought I would receive an ARC and get to write that. I have to thank Project Kyle deeply for reaching to me!

To be honest, I did have a few problems, but, BUT, the story stills have so much potential to get better.

So, what is Deep Cosmos about?

Basically this story goes about the adventures of a crew, where the team members are part of the deep cosmos, an organization that aims to take care of the galaxy.

So, what did I like about the book?

The main characters (Sophia, Nerd, Henry) are all pretty likable, but I hope we can get to know them better on the next books. I feel like this book started like it was going to be about Sophia but ended being all about Nerd. He came to be my favorite character of the book.

I like the way it’s narrated, because the book is actually pretty easy to read.

The villains are, in fact, scary. I don’t wish for anyone to encounter an Experiment-1 2.0.

So, why I didn’t gave it full 5 stars?

I think my first problem with the book was the way the author decided to get us into the world. It was really confusing. Actually, I’m still confused by a few things, like the time thing.

(Also, I have to mention it, because I don’t know if it’s going to come out in the sequel, but, why dr. Crimson was so interested in Sophia?)

My second problem: the fight scenes. To many times the narrator would think in the middle of a fight. And, if I’ve learnt something, is that the fight scenes most be narrated with only the characters actions, so the scene flows. The good thing, though, was the final fight scenes, where the author actually does this.

And finally, the way the story was developed. I don’t quite get what’s the exact problem, tbh. I just know is there, and it has been bothering me for the entire novel.

Now, the final question: I would read the sequel?

Yes, for sure. I would want to see what kind of development the author made about the story and, also, I’d want to answer some questions.

I do recommend this one if you like books with a lot of action and sci-Fi universes involved :D

**I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.**

I'm happy I was given the opportunity to read this book. I knew going in that it is SF but it has horror and mystery elements too that mesh very well! Though not perfect, this story is a super fun ride from beginning to end. The author's endless creativity continually left me in pleasant surprise. The grenade-like Rubik's cube used by our hero David, AKA Nerd, is one of my favorite. There are so many components to the characters and the world, big and small that are clever and make for an entertaining, insightful read.

This story is told in third person omniscient point of view and as a result there is a great deal more "show," and "tell" suffers a bit. I do think the author did a commendable job, though. There are many characters we are introduced to and he manages to give each a distinct voice so even in their thoughts, I could differentiate between them. The characters are one of this book's strengths; I find the main crew likable, relatable, and unique. There are wonderful illustrations of some of these characters featured in the book as well.

There are loose ends and unanswered questions at the novel's conclusion. BUT this is the first installment of a series and I imagine all will be revealed in time. I look forward to the next book and encourage fans of SF to give this highly entertaining, action-packed book a read!

This was a very unique Sci-Fi story filled with a lot of cool elements like zombie plagues and eccentric doctors. The villain for the second half of the story was really unique and I chuckled at some of his lines as he was taunting our poor heroes.

The characters were relatively well-developed. I really enjoyed Sophie and Nerd, though I would have liked to have seen a little more in the way of their relationship cause I ship it. I wasn't exactly sure of Henry's role in the story, though.

I think this book could have used a little more work as most of it was told rather than shown. I would have liked to have seen the story through the characters perspective instead of simply stating the facts of what had happened.

There is no language or sexual content, there is some violence but it isn't graphically described. Prepare for a high body count though.

Many thanks to for the complimentary copy of this novel that I was provided. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

I was kindly provided an e-ARC of this book by the author.

(1.5)

Ok, so, I am fully of the mentality that lying to someone to protect their feelings won't help them in the long run. This book had its problems, but I think they are fixable for future novels. There was potential here, and if the author ends up reading this, I hope they take on my tips to further their writing. I am definitely no professional, but I do hope to be a published author one day myself. And, obviously, I read. A lot. I have picked a few things up over the years of writing for fun (thanks mum for the sometimes unsolicited tips) and reading all sorts of books.

The Writing:

The writing, as stated by other reviewers, is a bit clunky. Luckily, this is easily fixed. Unluckily, it's fixed with time and practice. Those two annoying things that stand in the way of everyone who wants to achieve their goals instantaneously. Why can't I just download languages into my head? Why can't I just pick up a new instrument and be amazing?? A few of the things I noticed were:

• There needs to be more of that age old show not tell, as well as overall more emotive language. This will go a long way to make the writing more engaging and unique, and help with some of the repetitiveness.
• The dialogue needs some tweaking. It was a bit cheesy at times, and there was one case where a nine-year-old girl spoke like an adult. I'm not saying little kids can't be wise, it just came across as rather unrealistic. Also unrealistic, and a problem I have come across in multiple books (*cough*City of Bones*cough*) is when someone recounts something that happened in their past, but in a way that makes it sound as though they are telling a story.
• There needed to be more trust in the reader to understand what was going on. The words 'as', 'given', 'alas', 'this caused', and 'meaning' were used too much to give us more detail on something that had already been explained well enough.
• Now, this isn't so much the fault of the writer (especially after having read the interview at the end where the author explains that they struggle with spelling and grammar), but of the editor not picking it up. Typos. There were a quite a few considering this had been professionally edited. I did read an ARC copy, so hopefully these will have been fixed in the published editions.

I think a few creative writing classes would go a long way to help fix all these things, or even just a few exercises that can be found online.

The Characters:

Every character but Nerd was underdeveloped. Especially Sophia. She was an incredibly passive character. She is supposedly a Warrior, but whenever she got into trouble she'd never try to save herself, and always wait for another character (almost always Nerd) to rescue her. In the beginning she even has a gag placed over her mouth, and once her hands are free she doesn't even try to pick the lock, but waits for Nerd to notice and free her. She honestly infuriated me at times and read like she was created solely to make Nerd look like a better character. And maybe it's being nit-picky, but I didn't appreciate her obsession with high heels and wearing them in inappropriate situations, as well as Nerd buying her make-up and jewellery just because he thought she needed them. That last bit doesn't necessarily need to be cut out, just a little something tagged onto the end to make light of it. Example:

Sophia smirked when she saw the pile of bags dumped at Nerd's feet.
"You know," she said wryly, "not every woman is obsessed with make-up and jewellery and such."
"Ahhhh..." Nerd said, trailing off. "I'm sorry, I just thought you'd-"
Sophia cut him off. "It's fine, I appreciate it, I do, but I'm just letting you know for the future. It's nice and all, but not really necessary." She grinned then. "I'll still make good use of it though."

Maybe I'm being too sensitive, but I thought I'd point it out. Especially considering this book fails the Bechdel Test (I know that's for movies, same principle still applies) and Sophia is literally the only named woman in this. It has only two named female characters in the entirety of it, and one of those is in Nerds past. This is compared to around 15-20 named male characters.

Some Other Things:

• I'm a bit confused about the galactic plague. Every person who is afflicted by it is said to be brain dead, and yet they also attack people. I even looked it up to make sure I wasn't wrong, but brain dead people can't control their hormones, so I'm pretty sure they won't be able to move their limbs.

• I'm also confused by the timeline. It's set in 2010 and yet also says that humans have been travelling space for thousands of years. If this is an alternate universe or '2010' is some different measure of years than what it is here, then it definitely needs to be explained.

• We're on a run here. I'm also confused by

• It's a small thing, but

Overall I think a bit more research needed to be done to fix up a few small things, but it was definitely a unique read and I can tell that the author has a lot of ideas for this universe. I did really like the mixed-media aspects of this. My kindle only shows black and white, so I'm sure the pictures are better with colour, but I still thought they complemented the story well.

Also, this is an own voices book with a character on the autism spectrum. I don't have autism myself, and although I have a family member with severe autism, I don't feel as though I have a right to comment on how accurate or how well portrayed it was. But again, own voices, it's definitely accurate to the author.

If the author has read my review, I hope they aren't disheartened by it. The plot is there, the writing and characters just need work. I look forward to hearing more in the future.

I received this book from the author for an honest review.

I do like sci-fi, but I'm pretty picky about it because often time, adult sci-fi has a higher level of reading density to it. This book was not like that, which was nice. The writing style is simple and easy to read, making the book go by pretty fast. I found the world relatively interesting and like the fact that the main character is on the autism spectrum (I personally love working with students with autism, so seeing a character and recognizing these tendencies added to the uniqueness of the character).

I thought the thriller aspect of it was interesting, but could have been even more seriously heightened. Some aspects of the threat at hand felt a bit weak. I also don't think the warning at the beginning of the book is really necessary.

I didn't find any confusion when reading this book; I just took the events in stride knowing I'd learn more about the characters and world as I continued to read. I also really liked the hand-drawn images thrown in every once in awhile to emphasize a certain image or key idea of a chapter.

Overall, pretty good sci-fi read and I'd be interested in more!

Deep Cosmos is a sci-fi book with a great potential.

You might ask then why I gave it three stars, so the answer is in my statement only. This book do have a great potential that of course needs to come and be more polished.

The three main characters of this book is Nerd, Sophia and Henry. Out of all I loved Nerd's character the most. He appeared as a mystery guy who has humor in him. Now Sophia was alright as I didn't get that if she was a warrior why was she not able to defend herself in the first place.

The main reason why I gave this book a three star is there is no description of the world author created. We're just thrown randomly into this world without any prior information or anything in major.

Now what I loved the most is the illustrations in between chapters. They did make reading or I should say imagining the characters more easy and I quite liked this idea too.

I would only recommend this book if you're in for a fast paced sci-fi book.

I never was interested in sci-fi but this novel was absolutely amazing. The way the author developed the relationships between the characters was a thing of beauty and how he exploited it to the story's benefit was even more amazing. The story also put me in situations that gave me the opportunity to feel a certain things that may not have been possible in many other novels or real life and I'm thankful, it was rough ride but 100% worth it. Kyle also used the same strategy to spread awareness and make people with autism embrace their selves, that was superbly remarkable. I also love how he dug deep down inside every single character in the story and showed how everyone had a weakness, everyone had a soft spot and no one was invincible no matter how impossible it seemed to defeat them.

****I was sent an Ebook for an honest review****
I want to thank Kyle for letting me read this early! The book comes out November 10th 2018.

3.5 Stars
I enjoyed this book a lot. I highly enjoyed the pictures that were in here. How Kyle talks about the ship, i really felt like i was there with the characters. The main character i didn't care for to much. She was alright but i just didn't connect with her. Now Nerd on the other hand. I LOVED him. I would love to see more of him! I liked the message at the ending of the book as well.

I would recommend this book.

Thank you again Kyle for letting me read this!

There were some conversations that David Bell and Sophia Nelson had with a particular character that seemed a bit juvenile at times; though I got the idea that David was one of those strange charismatic characters. With David's condition - a little bit more research might have been beneficial in this area; since the setting as well as some of the activities wouldn't have been appropriate with the condition mentioned (having read one or two books on that particular topic). Some of the characters that were only mentioned in this book seemed pretty intriguing. I got an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Personal Response:
I thought Deep Cosmos was pretty enjoyable because it kept me intrigued the whole time I was reading. The book was pretty suspenseful during the jungle and jungle temple section because I didn’t know when Experiment-1 is going to take his next victim. Overall, I would say this book was pretty good and I would read a sequel if one was written.

Plot:
SPOILERS AHEAD
Deep Cosmos by Project Kyle is a story about sanity. The book begins with Sophia being trapped in a lair, strapped down to a table. She is in the lair of her former boyfriend, Dr. Crimson, who is a psychopath. Dr. Crimson is going to cut her up, but she is saved by a mysterious man. The two escape on this mysterious man’s spaceship. He tells her he is Nerd: the well known hero of the galaxy. Nerd takes Sophia to Deep Cosmos, an agency which saves people around the galaxy. Nerd is about to get kicked out because he broke the rules, but the person in charged is convinced otherwise by the Observer. The Observer also sends Sophia a message that Nerd is David Bell, the most wanted man in the galaxy. He also tells her that David was framed and is innocent. Nerd returns to the ship and the two leave. Nerd gets a distress signal from a freight ship, so the two of them go to check it out. When they arrive, everyone on the ship is dead. The two are ambushed and knocked out by Drake Robinson and his gang. Drake is the most feared bounty hunter in the galaxy who was hired by Dr. Crimson to capture Sophia. Drake takes everything except Nerd’s exploding Rubik’s Cube. Nerd meets Henry Smith, a space thug who was captured by the gang. Nerd uses the “Rubik’s Cube” to escape and saves Sophia. Henry joins the two and the three of them fight off the gang to escape from Wrath. The gang goes to Cosmo 5 to tell their boss what has happened. He gets angry and decides to kill David himself. Back on the Nerd’s ship, Henry says he will join the group and help people out as long as he is allowed to kill the bad people. David agrees to Henry’s terms and is interrupted by Deep Cosmos. Apparently, a disease called the galactic plague is back. The galactic plague killed millions of people ten years before the events in this book. The three check out where the plague has broken out and the scene is not good. The crewmembers on the ship tied down the crewmember affected by the plague and that crewmember has basically turned into a zombie. David calls down the crewmember and it dies peacefully. The three leave and go to another case of the galactic plague. The captain of this ship is infected and locked in another room. David calms down the captain and the captain also dies peacefully. Sophia tells David that she saw a pair of green eyes and David realizes that the plague is caused by Experiment-1. Experiment-1 is the first experiment of Cosmo 5 which basically made him invincible. Deep Cosmos contacts David and tells him that the Feds will be helping him try to solve the case, but he can’t let them see his face. He is the most wanted man in the galaxy after all. David, his crew, and the Feds leave to look for more cases of the galactic plague. Experiment-1 hacks the ship and makes them crashland onto a jungle planet. The group has to fight off a bunch of monsters. After the slaughter of the attacking monsters, they find a village full of people who also crash landed on the planet. They also meet Alcanore, one of the most famous soldiers ever. David tells them they have to go to the top of the jungle temple and destroy a beacon to get off the planet. They have a feast and go to sleep. Experiment-1 comes to the village and slaughters everyone except nine of them. In the morning, David and the remaining survivors look at the slaughter that occured over the night. Experiment-1 attacks the group with his fear bombs, so the group runs to the temple. They think they escaped until Experiment-1 kills off one of the commanders, so now eight people remain. One person is cut in half right in front of the temple, so now seven remain. In the temple it is full of traps and puzzles. They survive the first room, but one of the crew is lured into a trap and is killed by Experiment-1. Six people remain out of the original nine. Experiment-1 also captures Sophia, the one person David really cares about. The five head up a long set of stairs until Experiment-1 sets off a trap that makes the stairs disappear. David and a medic make it, but Henry, Alcanore, and Alcanore’s best friend are stuck on a rope. Alcanore’s best friend realizes the rope is going to snap, so he sacrifices himself. At the top, Experiment-1 challenges David to a duel, so David accepts. Henry and Alcanore head to the top to destroy the beacon. The medic tries to help David, but Experiment-1 kills him. David lures Experiment-1 to a plant that instantly dissolves anything and kills him. David saves Sophia and Henry and Alcanore destroy the beacon. The four escape the island and are announced heroes. David asks Alcanore if he wants to join the crew and he accepts. The four leave the ceremony and the book ends.

Characterization:
Nerd develops as a character throughout this book by opening up more to people. This allows him to be more relaxed as he can talk to his crew about his troubles and his stress level lowers.

Sophia develops as a character throughout this book by having her self confidence level rise. She starts out with a low confidence level because people keep telling her she is useless and has no reason to live. Her confidence level rises because the Nerd reassures her that she is not useless and has many reasons to live.

Experiment-1 develops more throughout the story through messages and the massacres he causes. He makes the Nerd and his crew change from somewhat scared of him to terrified of him because he kills four people off in the jungle and temple in about an hour.

Setting:
This book has the following settings: Dr. Crimson’s lab, Cosmo 5, the Nerd’s spaceship, a freight spaceship called Wrath, and some mysterious planet all in the year 2010. Dr. Crimson’s lab is important to the plot because this is where Sophia meets the Nerd, who saves Sophia from being killed. Cosmo 5 is important to the plot because this is where Experiment-1 originated from.
The Nerd’s spaceship is important to the plot because this is where most of the story takes place, such as every part where the crew is not on a planet or in a different ship. Wrath is important to the plot because this is where the Nerd and Sophia are captured and meet Henry.
Some mysterious planet is important to the plot because this is where the last couple chapters of the story take place. This is also where Experiment-1 terrorizes the crew and inhabitants of this island.
The year 2010 is important to the plot because this is the year this book takes place. There are some references to items that have happened on Earth before 2010, such as some 1980’s references.

Theme:
The theme of this book would be keeping sanity. The reason I would say this is the theme of this book because it says multiple times in this book that the reader or characters should attempt to keep their sanity. This book has multiple times in it where the characters have events that happen which could lead to insanity, but they remain calm and keep the sanity they have left.

Recommendation:
I would recommend this book to both males and females. The age range I would recommend this book to would be 13 and up. The reason for the recommended age range would be that this book has some gruesome moments in it not appropriate for children.

Thank you so much to the author for giving me the opportunity to read this book!!

I will and always will be a Sci-fi person. But even if you're not into sci-fi I feel like it's an easy book to read, to understand and to enjoy. I felt some "Doctor Who" vibes in there so if you're a nerd like me. Your soul will be pleased.

Also I loved the main character David/Nerd soooooo much! His point of view was so interesting and unsettling at the same time. It was straight to the point with not much of emotion. It was a bit confusing at the beginning but after his big revelation it all made sense.

I love the cast of characters from humans to not human at all characters. I love reading about them interacting and learning about each other.

The way it was written made me think of a comicbook. And again, the way David/Nerd was acting, the fway the fight scenes were described, the way some characters seemed melodramatic etc made all sense if you see it from that perspective.

I easily see this book being the first one in a long series with each book it's own plot. I could even this becoming a tv show but hey still my opinion. I love reading about some heavy subjects such as manipulation, depression, ptsd etc... It's not the most common things to talk about in sci-fi books I feel.

It was a funny and very enjoyable read for me. I really had fun reading it.

**I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review**

I’m not really sure where to start with this. While I can certainly see this story’s potential, what with some of the environmental details being crafted fairly well, as well as some aspects of mental health being tastefully handled, and certain concepts being of interest, I also found far too many issues to personally enjoy it.

For one, there was a lot of unnecessary exposition and info-dumping going on. Instead of gradually being introduced to the characters’ physical features, personalities, back stories, etc. everything is kind of just dropped on us all at once.

Certain terminologies were used incorrectly (such as dissection, when it ought to have been vivisection, as Sophia was awake when Dr. Crimson intended to cut her open). There were other instances like this, where words or terms were wrongfully used, which suggested to me that not enough research was done regarding themes unfamiliar to the author.

Other issues I had involved consistency and probability. For example, why did Nerd just happen to have the key to Sophia’s muzzle in his pocket? Why do these characters just happen to know what the other is thinking or feeling? If they inferred it from their expressions or tones of voice, I could see that working—but unfortunately, that’s not how things have been written out.

There was also a great deal of telling and not showing. Don’t get me wrong, telling has its place, but I’d much rather be shown a person’s expression/body language, hear their tone of voice, than be told what they’re feeling. Likewise, the dialogue was awkward, and felt more like unprepared actors delivering lines in some sort of play, than genuine interaction between characters. And while I can accept Nerd is socially awkward in his interactions, none of the other characters felt particularly natural, either. Dr. Crimson felt too much like a comic book villain; not the complex kind, but the “old-school, very little was done to develop him as a person, reducing him to little more than the token bad guy” kind. In general, all of the characters fell flat for me personally, as I wasn’t able to connect with any of them beyond surface level. Whenever I did come across something that could have added depth to them, such as when Sophia was reading Nerd’s diary, the instance fell short—because instead of being treated to his actual diary entries, in his own, written words, all we’re being given is a glossed-over summary.

Beyond that, the world seemed interesting, (though it still could have been fleshed out a bit more), and I liked the concept regarding the gap between realities (I’m a sucker for sort of “worlds between and connecting to other worlds” concepts.) Overall, I could see that the author was definitely making an effort to create a compelling story with compelling characters—but sadly, it just didn’t click with me on a personal level. Despite my reading experience not being a particularly enjoyable one, I hope the author will continue to write stories and hone their craft, and would be willing to read more of their works in the future.

I would like to thank Kyle for my copy of the ARC. Due to this kind gesture, I have decided to leave a review.

I haven't been reviewing ARC's for authors lately because I haven't been getting the chance to read books that I actually want to read but when Kyle approached me and asked me if I would like to read his book I was intrigued due to it being the sort of story I would never actually pick up, boy am I glad he did!! I loved it! Was it perfect, no, but that's what made me love it even more and I believe Kyle has opened me up to a brand new genre of literature that I would never really have given a chance before.

When Sophia finds herself vulnerable and trapped by a madman, she never thinks for a second that another madman would be her saviour, nor would she join his band of merry men! Nerd has secrets, secrets that he would like to keep but how long can he keep them for? A story full of heroic underdogs and amazing aliens Sophia soon finds her feet and starts to wonder if this is where she belongs.

The book is full of action, and the sci-fi part of the story is amazing, you sit and build the world up as you go along which I found endearing as more time was spent on action than world building. I loved how we have illustrations throughout, I really liked this and it made it different, almost comic-book like!

I would have liked to have got to know more of our characters a bit better, characters like Tom, Grunt and Alcanore really intrigued me so I was pretty heartbroken just as we were getting to know them! I would have loved to have learnt more about them, especially Tom & Grunt as they really captured me.

I do like our main characters, Nerd, Sophia and Henry and I believe we will see them grow as the story progresses onto the next book which I honestly look forward to! I hope we see more character building. I really enjoyed how extra the book was and how it was different from what I have read before, especially the types of alien and space travel.

All in all the book kept my attention throughout and I never got bored as it was fast paced with plenty of action. I think for Kyle first proper novel he should be extremely proud! 3 and a half stars!
