Although I liked this book it feels hard to give it more than three stars. Why?
Although it is quite interesting with many handy tips it's nothing mind-blowing or completely new.
In the end it's about creating an action plan, setting deadlines, being accountable, measuring progress, all things well researched in psychology and goal research.
So on the other hand one could argue, why read this book at all, if it's all already out there easy to get access to. Well for me it wasn't about getting so much new info, but more about a constant reminder of how things work and what needs to be done in order to achieve a goal set for oneself.
That's why the way it was written didn't disturb me.
For me, it took a bit of time to get into it, because the writing style is more like the way a motivational speaker talks, but if you're not in it to only get information I think his style is quite fitting, although sometimes maybe a bit over the top, but well, you can't have it all.
So yes, that's why I rate this book with three stars.
It's entertaining, it's reminding you of things you might or should already know, but it does it in a funny and/or motivating way and maybe there are even a few strategies that you didn't stumble across before.
To conclude: Three stars but still a reading recommendation for anyone who feels stuck at a project at the moment.

The text of the first portion of the podcast is as follows...

Hello listeners! Welcome to another episode from Digital Amrit’s book reviews. The chosen book for this episode is Michael Mackintosh’s Get it done – the 21-day mind hack system to double productivity and finish what you started. Quite a mouthful, isn’t it? But, the book isn’t very long.
Let’s see what this book is about. As the title suggests, this book looks at how to tune your mind to get things done, be more productive and how to fight what comes in the way of finishing your projects / achieving your goals.
The book is divided into three parts – Part I deals with 11 essential mind hacks to make things happen, Part II is the unstoppable 21 day challenge and Part III is your 21-day challenge.
The 11 essential mind hacks that are discussed in the book are:
1. Prolonged pain or short lived pain – whether you think of long-term consequences of your choices and take tough decisions or procrastinate in order to avoid short-term or immediate consequences or unpleasantness.
2. Defining choice – you decide what you want to do. If you want to change, make it happen – think differently and act differently. You cannot do the same things that you always do and magically expect things to change.
3. 80/20 rule – few things in life matter a lot while the rest are trivial. For example, 20% of the time you spend at work might bring in 80% of the outcome, while the remaining 20% of the value takes up 80% of your time. Identify the 20% of your time that brings in the most value and focus on it while cutting back on the time that takes care of trivial issues.
4. Good is good enough – a good presentation may take 2 hours while a perfect or near-perfect presentation might take 20 hours. In most cases in life, good is effective and sufficient and perfectionism not only takes time but, may also lead to procrastination.
5. Delusion of time management – you simply cannot manage time! You can only manage yourself – focus on managing your thoughts, your emotions, your words and your actions. This helps create a better you – a more empowered version of yourself. This would mean that you are directing your thoughts and actions into achieving what you want, rather than merely ticking items off a to-do list.
6. Resistance – finally, we know who or what is between us and our goals. It is an internal force, called “the Resistance” which makes your determination weak and distracts you. Once you let that happen, you are back to being distracted, moving further away from your goals.
7. Fears and hallucinations – irrational fears such as fear of success, fear of rejection, what will happen if I do this? What will the others think of me – these hold us back from what we want to do.
8. Focus – if you do too many things, the chances of any one moving towards completion is very low. Rather, choose one main thing and focus on it until completion.
9. How to overcome self-doubt – We keep telling ourselves that we are not ready yet and that we need more practice. But, let that slide and think compassionately. You don’t need to be perfect, you are better than so many of them out there.
10. Do it now – There is only one time and that is now. If we wait for tomorrow or some other future date, it will never happen. At the end, you would find satisfaction that you did something, rather than regretting that the perfect time never came.
11. Do less work to get more done – Take a break, enjoy something other than work and then get back to work after you have rested.
Part II deals with the 21-day challenge.

FR REVIEW :

DISCLAIMER : Thank you, TCK publishing for providing me with an ARC of this book. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Michael Mackintosh has consolidated some of the key concepts of productivity into a working template that can be tailored to facilitate the new routines that will help us get things done in 21 days. The book is divided into 3 parts with the first part taking us through 11 mind hacks to help us realign our perspectives and get a clearer picture of what we want. The strategies that are given to us in part 2 is the 21-day challenge with techniques and steps to help us get closer to our goals. Part 3 sums up everything by bringing together the components that are part of the recipe for ultimate success. Mackintosh has obviously taken the time to deconstruct the key ideas and develop a winning formula that is not only easy to understand and follow, it also is very practical. Each step is painstakingly detailed and the devil is in the details. I would recommend taking 21 days to get the prep work for the goal-setting using the templates in the book. The attention to detail and reiterating of certain concepts helps us with holding on to the important aspects of the process.

If you are someone who is looking to create habits and routines that will help us get on track to creating a better life, this book should be on top of your list. I loved this book. It's filled with so much information, strategies, and working templates that I enjoyed every second of it. I took so many notes and if you guys want a breakdown of the chapters or a chapter summary, please let me know. I am thrilled to take this make and use it for helping me achieve my goals. It was a beneficial book and inspired me to take charge and not give up. I gave the book 5 stars and I highly recommend checking it out. Want to change your life and make long-lasting positive impressions, get this book now and start working on your 21-day challenge to transform your life drastically.

I am a HUGE productivity nerd so when the publisher asked me to write a review I was all over it. One thing that I have found in books such as productivity books is that after a while it seems as if the authors read each other books then decide to change a thing or two give it a new name and claim that THIER book is different. I was pleased to see after I had read a couple of chapters that Get It Done WAS different,

I think that one of the reasons that I read so many productivity books is that I have a horrible procrastination problem. Case in point: This review was supposed to go up on Tusday (October 23, 2018) yet here it is Thursday night, and I am just now sitting down to write the review.

I was feeling a lot of resistance for the past two weeks with my writing, and I am so glad that it wasn't just me. That hundreds think this way also. I also learned that procrastination is a form of resistance and you have to show your Inner teenager who is boss.

Most productivity books are written with overwhelmed people in mind, not people who are overwhelmed because they did not get off their buts and doing it which is why such books Such as David Allen GTD method never workes for people like me.

In Get It Done however not only does the author Michael Mackintosh explain WHY we creative people tend to procrastinate he tells us HOW to overcome it. He was so convincing that I am going to try out my 21-day thingie. As soon as I figure out my top 20 tasks.

The top 20 percent is based on the theory that wealth and the like are distributed among 20 percent of the people but 80 percent...are something. I have never been all that good with theories like this but what I do understand is your top 20 of your tasks are what propels your life and projects forward while 80 percent of the work you do is just an attempt at looking busy.  So I guess the 4 hour work week is a valid strategy after all. L thought   Get it Done explains it much better.

Another point Michael Mackintosh makes is how we tend to get stuck in rabbit holes with our phones and the internet. This is so true for me. I finally got fed up at my self, so I broke down and got a lifetime subscription to Freedom, I have it on all of my gadgets so if I am supposed to be working I can't get on the internet, and presto productivity tripled.

One thing that I loved about this book is that it acknowledges that time cant be managed, but instead, you should do your most important work when your energy is at its peak. I know for me that time is from 1 to 5 so that is when I write. I have tried to write early in the morning, but my brain won't cooperate until 1 pm. Another time it is gibberish.

These are the reasons that I loved Get it Done. If you feel like other productivity books, do not help your problem such as procrastination then give this book a try. It is full of ways to overcome procrastination and to mover forward in your life and projects.

Enjoyable read

For someone who procrastinates a lot and has so many to-do lists this was an interesting read. I found I lot of really good points which I'd like to follow.
I'll certainly have to read parts of the book again to follow some parts.
I do think this is more tailored to someone who either owns their own business or can manage their time with a lot more freedom than those of with jobs we have to go to to pay the bills but I could take some of the chapters away and think how I fit this into my life.

Impressions:

Absolutely worth reading. I was dumbstruck by Michael's perspective of 'Time Management' and it compelled me to reevaluate my preconceived notion of the concept. I jotted down so many key strategies and I've made it a point to through them every week.

I'll re-read this book multiple times in the future. It might not enlighten everyone. But it surely did for me.

TWENTY ONE DAYS!

There are plenty of books and other media and seminars that tout Time Management. This book has a refreshingly different brief and direction. The essence is self-management, confronting what sabotages our good intentions, understanding our values, committing ourselves to the 20% that truly makes a difference, and most crucially, holding ourselves accountable - yes, daily! - to someone we trust. Michael writes in an easy, robust style, willing to share his own path, mistakes and failures to learn from and change both one’s mindset and one’s true life-goals. His approach is sensible and practical, an instrument for liberation from the same old ways. In twenty-one days! Get reading! RM

Get It Done is my Hero book for 2018 - 5 stars

As I was flipping through my Twitter feed 2 days ago, a simple but colourful and compelling book cover for Get It Done caught my eye. I have been struggling with a lack of motivation, no focus and some pretty miserable unproductive weeks due to the fact that I am a compulsive procrastinator. Get It Done seemed to offer me a way forward.

So I bought the ebook and, being a bad sleeper at the best of times, I started reading it at 3am yesterday morning. I finally put my iPad down at 5:30am to try to get a few hours sleep. But that was not to be. So by 10am I had reached the final page, of what I can only describe as an energising, life changing experience.

Michael Mackintosh has the unique ability to communicate clearly and convincingly his proven strategy to get things done, with a structure to ensure a much higher degree of success.

This book is a must read for anyone and everyone who is struggling to get things done and completed successfully, using his proven 21 day challenge approach.

I have identified my first 21 day challenge project and will follow Michael's directions and complete this project within the first 21 days of November 2018.

If I could give it 6 stars I would, but 5 stars will have to suffice. Michael, you are my new hero!

This 21-day step-by-step program to finish what you start was just what I needed! The author does a good job of combining psychology and turning our inner thoughts into actions. While some might think it's just another productivity book, I found the author really understood what the mind does to procrastinate. He provides a series of worksheets with fill-in-the blank templates and explains how and why to use them to beat procrastination.

At first, I was a bit put off by the author's inclusion of meditation and some new age ideas... BUT, it was helpful to me in the end!

About half way through the book, I found an online link for downloading even more material that supports my progress in the 21-Day Challenge. There's downloadable worksheets that follow what's in the book and even podcasts to talk you through the steps. I listened to the podcasts in the evenings after reading the book and again, while a bit new-age for me, still found them useful to get on with my project.

I'm currently using the steps to work on a project that I lost momentum for. Indeed, having the worksheets really gave me an outline of what I had overlooked before and a bit of boost to get going again.

I even made my first vision board because of this book! Which was fun and is definitely motivating.

Yeah, maybe the ideas aren't groundbreaking for some readers. I get that. For me, the detailed steps and the psychology of procrastination was!

My Recommendation: It's a pass for me. I feel like there are better ones out there with similar ideas. I also didn't like the "attacking the world" mindset this book wanted you in. This one line, barely 1/3 of the way through the book really put me off: "If you want to be successful and happy, you must recognize the enemy clearly and win the WAR for your mind and your life." (67) The book, and this section in particular seemed to be in antithesis to Mackintosh's life style of meditation and relaxation, but perhaps that's just my reading.

My Response: This book just wasn't for me. I felt like it took MONTHS to read (it only took two weeks, but it was two weeks too long). The publicist reached out to me a bout this book sometime in 2018 and I just now got around to it, so clearly I needed the time management, but apparently not much else in this book.*

Overall, this book just didn't sit well with me. I had a lot of issues with how Mackintosh approached his time management system (it's a WAR, you have to WHACK things) and the layout/formatting of the book had quite a few issues. Mackintosh builds his whole premise on the book that if you have a better time system, know what your challenges are going to be, and set up your goals and limitations ahead of time you'll be perfectly set to finish a project in 21 days. You can do this with his help by buying the book AND/or subscribing to his class/workshop.

A great book with a lot of information and tricks and tips on how to get things done.
Most of them are already know to most people for sure, but the actual implementation and the guided, step-by-step procedure explained and shown in the book really inspired me to give it a try.

As the book suggested at the beginning, I first read it, without filling the gaps, answering the questions and following the exercises; my plan is to now go back and try doing all the exercises, one by one, in order, so I will be ready to start my first 21-day "challenge".

I can't wait to see if this will work out as expected or if my `Resistance` will block me from accomplishing anything.

Great read, quite easy to read, you can manage to read it in a few days, or in one as well if you just focus on the book the entire day.

This is a good book to help guide you into transforming your life by tackling a project that you've had difficulty getting into motion. I like the author's tips and sections for you to articulate what you plan to accomplish in the 21-day period. This book would be even more impactful in a group setting where you could identify people who will hold you accountable. I especially liked the first half of the book where he provides a good summary of general productive concepts that are important to implement during the challenge. My only complaint was the writer's personal examples, which weren't relatable and weren't inspiring as much as being annoying and a means for self-promotion.

While the information (and the encouragement) is there, this plan - or system - is designed for the person who does NOT have to spend 8 hrs a day at a job. Too often he slips in info nuggets that really place this in the realm of those without real commitments. The idea is actually pretty sound, if a bit bloated, and one should modify his advice for your life accordingly.

Unique approach and step by step system to accomplish goals. It was refreshing, and it was actionable. I found the book easy to read and the process easy to implement. I already had a project in mind so it was "easy" to implement into this system.

I definitely can see how this could be very helpful to someone who hasn't read as many of these kinds of books as I have. After awhile there's not much new that one can say. I also had a hard time taking his advice, as it's very clear from the author's personal examples that he doesn't have a "day job" -- so it seems rather easy for him to tackle a huge project in 21 days, spend 4 hours on it per day, and then spend the rest of his time doing whatever he likes (and then go on a big vacation at the end of every project). I think the book would have been more helpful if there was some flexibility in the timeline to accommodate people whose lives aren't conducive to that timeline. If I were to commit to such a timeline anyway, it would be a recipe for burnout.

The book is extremely repetitive, even by the standards of productivity/self-help books. There's really nothing new in it. It's a mishmash of well-known ideas, such as the Pareto principle, explained in shallow and often ineffective terms.

There's actually very little here that's actionable. The 'advice' is largely along the lines of "Procrastination is preventing you achieving your goals. You should find ways to stop procrastinating! Switch your phone off! MIND HACK!"

In fact, it was only when I logged on to Goodreads that I discovered I'd read the book 8 months earlier: it's so completely forgettable. I downgraded it from 3 starts to 2 for this reason.

A couple of weeks ago, I was asked to review Get It Done: The 21-Day Mind Hack System to Double Your Productivity and Finish What You Start by Michael Mackintosh. This is probably the fourth book that I've been asked to review and I am privileged each and every time. I had no idea what the book was going to be about. I like surprises. I am happy to say that I was very pleased with the substance of this book.  Get It Done from TCK Publishing puts you on a path to completing goals and objectives with laser focus. Read More
