Ten warriors hunt a lone man. He flees … and plunges headlong into an epic quest of even greater danger. Talon, ruthlessly pursued by the warrior band, returns to the land of his birth. He finds it threatened by an army. The mountain fortress that guards the narrow pass into the realm is undermanned. Worse, the kingdom’s soldiers are fighting a battle on another front. There are no reinforcements. The fortress will soon fall. When it does, the enemy will ravage an entire kingdom. Talon risks his life to bring word to allies who might help. But to reach them, he must somehow pass through the very army set to destroy his homeland. He begins the quest, but the warrior band has not given up the hunt. Nor is the invading army led by a man, but by a sorcerer ready to risk anything for victory. Talon is beset by enemies at every step, including a creature of dark power that stalks him. The road to safety is long, and the hope of success is short. Yet, in the darkest hour of his life, he finds an unexpected ally. A girl of striking courage helps him, and he falls in love with her. But if his quest fails, only smoke and ash will remain of the future they might have shared. This boxed set contains the entire Swordmaster trilogy, previously released as Fortress of the Forgotten. This is a remastered and expanded edition.
Remember the fight scenes in Lord of the Rings? This little fantasy novella is basically one big Lord of the Rings fight scene but with goblins instead of orcs. The characters, world building and story really aren't interesting or well-developed, but that doesn't seem to be the focus at all which is something not seen too often except for classic sword and sorcery books like Conan the Barbarian.
My only big complaint is that the final chapter ends very abruptly and leaves the book feeling unfinished. The entire trilogy is basically just one book split into three parts rather than three self-contained narratives that continue after one another. A good book if you just want some mindless action between man and monster without commiting to a massive story or world.

Quest - 3/5
Quest continues the tradition of the first book by feeling like one long Lord of the Rings battle scene. This one feels more like Shadows of Mordor than Lord of the Rings as the action is a bit more gritty and brutal. Good fun.

Siege - 4/5
The final entry in this trilogy is better in every way than the previous two books. The action is even grittier and flashier and this time it has much stronger characterization, lore, emotional depth and even a few surprising plot twists in a series that’s been fairly minimal in terms of plot. This was a very simple and straightforward trilogy about warriors clashing with goblins, a fun escapade of classic fantasy action.
All in all it was a decent book. At times it felt a bit to “paint by the numbers” almost like its for fantasy beginners, but it was still worth the read. I’m hoping that the author gets more comfortable with his characters and the books get even better.
This is the second time I have read this story and it seem to be different. But there is one part that does not seem right. Talent left but the axe man seem to know him and the duke daughter. I do believe he came on the scene after they left.
Nice story but felt more like a “short story” than an epic series. Some Lord of the Rings type characters and plot but they weren’t fully developed. The story almost felt rushed to get to the ending.
Would I read the next book in this series? Sure, I would like to see where the story goes from here.
Except for bad syntax and incorrect spelling, the story was fine. The tension held strong until the end. The characters were well-defined and the siege described realistically.
So glad noblebright is back. It's so hard to find a story styled on the old epic tales. Good writing, noble characters and a happy ending. What more could a person want. Thank you Rutger
This work is an entertaining sword and sorcerer's tale as defined by the classic definition. Talon is one of the heroes who struggles against evil. I enjoyed the books and think that you will too.
