The High Priestess is the third episode of the coming-of-age epic fantasy serial, The Ravenglass Chronicles. Inspired by the tarot and set in a rich medieval world, it is an epic journey of forbidden love, intrigue, and magic.
Jon Cronshaw is a British science fiction and fantasy author based in the north of England, just south of the wall. As a freelance features writer, he has had work published in local and national newspapers across the UK, including the Yorkshire Post and the Guardian. He earned his PhD in history of art from the University of Leeds in 2011, focusing on the life and work of Anglo-American sculptor, Jacob Epstein (1880-1959). He's a voracious reader, guide dog owner, ex-gamer, and wrestling fan.
Excellent 2nd full instalment in the Ravenglass Chronicles and Kat’s wedding is getting closer. She is still having strange dreams and Witz the “spymaster” Wyvern is becoming more and more interested in them. She continues to try and see Hansel despite being warned off by both Witz and her mother and that doesn’t end well. And to top it all she has a huge set to with the master huntsman who now thinks she is a witch, over his treatment of the hounds.
All in all not a good run up to meeting ones future husband, and Kat is teetering on the brink of fleeing completely.
Kat is right. The corset was an instrument of torture for women. Bed for their health and likely the cause of fainting prevalent in the era of their wearing. I expect the new Empress to ban them shortly after she deals with her domineering sister. The mini-dragon/wyvern is an interesting character in that he is the Empress’ confidant and best friend confessor to Princess Kat.
Kat would not be the first royal set up with an arranged marriage for political gain nor the first one to balk. Nor would she be the first to give her heart to a commoner who she will not be allowed to wed. The British Royal Family supply us with dramatic cases in point.
Kat’s younger sister Elizabeth is an insufferable little snob who takes every opportunity to belittle her elder and blab on her misdeeds.
As this section ends Kat goes to the palace library to find out more about her ravenglass sword and is introduced by a scribe to the Empire’s History that supplies her with revelations into her family’s history.
The High Priestess is Book #2 in the Ravenglass Chronicles by Jon Crenshaw is a spellbinding, episodic fantasy series that blends tarot-inspired storytelling with a rich coming-of-age journey. Jon Cronshaw crafts a world that feels both intimate and expansive, where magic is woven into the very fabric of the land and every chapter feels like turning over a new card in a mysterious deck. For readers who are looking for immersive world-building, character-driven fantasy, with a tarot-infused storyline that’s brimming with imagination. Happy Reading…
Kat’s naiveite begins to vanish in direct proportion to her understanding of her duties as the next in line as empresses of the Ostreich empire and her pending arranged betrothal to Lord Kraus, the emperor of Wiete. Additionally, she begins to uncover eye-opening things about the empire and her predecessors. Jon Cronshaw has crafted a very entertaining series that I have found to be addictive. I received and advance review copy and chose to provide this review.
Yes, the development of this naive MC is quite intriguing while being exasperating at the same time. Definitely the stage where I find myself wanting to slap the MC or at least yell at her. I can say with certainty, the author truly has engaged me into this tale. But more has yet to be revealed and book 3 is in my near future.
*3.5 stars* Enjoying the series so far. Kat is at times annoying but otherwise is becoming a strong character. Excited to see where this goes. Also love how the author writes about the tarot cards and the symbolism behind them at the end of the book. He connects it with the book really well.
I really enjoyed this book. I devoured it in one sitting. It flowed superbly and was a nice easy read. This has been my favourite series by this author.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I figured I would learn more about the high priestess in this book… but you actually don’t. Kat works out that for her to try and figure out the ancient power to her dagger she needs to ask the high priestess but quickly learns she knows nothing substantial. You get to learn more about Lord Kraus, who is her betrothed and’s a very vile man.
Kat is struggling with having to do what her mother says by marry a Lord which she despises, getting herself ready to become the empress and to figure out what is going on with her magic. Lots of choices she has to make. Finding out about her father and what is the truth and what is a lie. Will keep you reading till the end. A real page turner.
