Ellie Carter is hiding, living a half-life and nursing scars that never healed. Abandoning her job and her family, she fled to the coast and hoped to escape her memories and pain. But she’s haunted by both.
Owen Riggs is the eternal optimist, so when he breaks what little trust Ellie had in him, he knows he can earn it back.
Step by step, touch by touch, he works to repair the damage he’s caused. But no matter how deeply in love Owen falls, he learns that the scars you can’t see are the hardest to heal.
Rachel De Lune writes emotionally driven contemporary romance.
She began scribbling her stories in the pages of a notebook several years ago, and still can’t resist putting pen to real paper. What ifs are turned into heartfelt stories of love where there will always be a HEA.
Rachel lives in the South West of England and if she’s not writing HEAs, she’s probably reading them. She is a wife and has a beautiful daughter.
Rachel also writes darker romance with her co-author and book-bestie under Hart De Lune.
I really enjoyed New Tides the first book in De Lune's new series. Set against the stunning backdrop of Cornwall: a place I have enjoyed many a holiday with my family this had so much to recommend and also retain my attention. Loving this area so much I was excited to embark on a book within this particular setting and I certainly wasn't disappointed. Almost instantly here I was invested in the storyline following Ellie as she attempts to overcome and live with her crippling anxiety. Whatever the cause, this type of disability has such an impact on everyday living: one I have myself struggled with and still do to a certain extent. I felt that the author here has managed to impart with great sensitivity the battle individuals with this condition face and the daily fight to attempt to overcome and move forward with a condition that never really goes away entirely. And Instead of shock plotlines to grab and enthral New Tides actually relies on its overall simplicity appealing to the reader with its emotion and an inert warmth: Enveloping me so completely in its warm embrace. Both Ellie and Owen had such an authenticity and an overall sense of realness about themselves that was portrayed almost from the onset here. I also really adored the slow burn aspect of this and the author has managed to convey a real sense of connection between both Ellie and Owen that didn't feel forced one little bit. Everything here seemed to have such a natural flow: a sense of believability if you will and given the circumstances behind Ellie's chronic anxiety and trust issues with men I was worried initially if this would be the case. Happily, my concerns were unfounded as the author here has indeed managed to pull this off with great sympathy and such credibility. So New Tides was written from Ellie's POV: this doesn't always work for me in a romance as I feel this sometimes gives a lobsided characterisation where you tend to feel much closer to one individual more than the other. It worked here maybe because Ellie was the person needing that centre stage position more than Ollie: I still would have liked to maybe experience events from Ollies side of the fence just to get more of a sense of where he was at. So yeh that and Ellie's relatives behaviour (especially the mothers) were my only minors here. I just couldn't get my head around how a mother could be that cold and being kept in the dark towards the reason is no excuse: I'm a mother myself and there's nothing that would make me act in such a way towards my own child. So this gets my wholehearted seal of approval I read it in one actual sitting not moving from the couch throughout: happy to recommend. I voluntary reviewed an Arc of New Tides (The Cornwall Tides Trilogy Book 1) All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
You know when you just want to kick yourself for not reading a book sooner, well that is how I am currently feeling. I cannot believe I have not read New Tides before now; it blew me away! Rachel De Lune has written this story beautifully and I hope that I can now write the review that it deserves.
Ellie is the most incredible person - I absolutely adore her! Her story is one of strength, courage, determination and hope and I could see throughout that she had all of this in abundance, even when her struggles were at their worst. Her story broke my heart at times, especially when she spoke of the trauma that she suffered which led her to move to Cornwall. There were moments that I wanted to take her back so that she could receive the help and support that I wished she had sought at that time, but I know all too well that we all deal with situations in our own individual ways and what may be right for one person is not necessarily right for the next.
I dare you not to fall in love with Owen. I adore him! Fate certainly lent a hand in bringing this couple together. Owen is kind, considerate and understanding and I could see how much Ellie meant to him. It is these traits that enables Ellie to consider the possibility of getting close to him, along with the connection that they undeniably have and I prayed that they could work with each other, taking those small steps together to be happy together.
I felt that the author did an incredible job of writing Ellie’s story. She wrote about real life trauma and struggles with care and sensitivity without it ever feeling too heavy to read. I connected instantly with Ellie and was able to both sympathise and empathise with her throughout. The emotions that this story brought out in me were real and raw and even though I was reaching for the tissues at times, the interactions between Ellie, Owen, Kerenza and George had me smiling widely too.
New Tides will definitely be one of my top reads not only of this year but of all time! As well as enjoying spending my time with Ellie, Owen and the supporting characters, Cornwall has now been added to my list of places to visit in the very near future. I highly recommend for you to read this emotionally gripping story and I hope that one day we will have more visits to Tregethworth to catch up with the residents there.
Bloody hell! I'm a gibbering mess. There is nothing like the feeling of completely and wholeheartedly connecting with a character in a book. Feeling her pain, experiencing her struggles, living her worries, knowing her mental and physical aches are the hardest aches to overcome. I could be Ellie. The reasons for my anxiety are nowhere near as awful as hers but every word that was written, every moment of panic and anxiety that was portrayed was as real as it comes. It was like looking in a mirror, reading sections of my own memoirs. Painful, heart breaking, soul destroying yet at the same time it renewed my sense of empowerment, my desire to find me again, to continue to live the happiest life i can with my family and friends holding me up and helping me to shine.
This is a real slow burner of a love story. I adored every second. The emotions are all so raw, it is extremely well written, the subject matters are dealt with with integrity and compassion. There's no big plot twist, no suspense or overworked drama. Just a story about a woman who doesn't think she deserves love finding it in so many different places, in so many different ways. Just perfect! Thanks Rachel for another stunning read.
New Tides by Rachel De Lune is Book One in The Cornwall Tides Trilogy. This is the story of Owen Riggs and Ellie Carter. Ellie had a past traumatic experience that has left her with a lot of anxiety. So Ellie feels safer in her own world but things start to change with Owen comes into her life. Owen is just a great 'book boyfriend', he has patience when dealing with Ellie and her issues. This was a slow build to their full romance story. As someone who has anxiety issue, I felt this dealt with the story very well. I hope to read more books from this author soon.
New Tides is an emotional read that will test your fortitude as you unveil the true reasons Ellie has isolated herself from those she knows and loves. Ellie's scars are more than skin deep. She is courageous, determined, loyal, and strong. I loved that she persisted even with set backs. Ellie is one of the bravest characters I have ever read and I adored her from beginning to end.
Meeting Owen brings Ellie to the brink of despair as her trust in herself is tested. Owen opens up the deepest part of her soul through his patience, inner strength, and confidence. As Ellie journeys forward towards healing she is faced with the challenges of accepting Owen's friendship or living a life of isolation. Will she ever have love in her life again? Are the scars of her past too deep to ever let another man in? A must read to find out!!!
New Tides is the first book in the Cornwall Tides Trilogy, telling the story of Ellie and Owen. “” Trust is a slow burn. And love can be too”” The author is taking us on a journey in one of the most beautiful places in United Kingdom, a small town in Cornwall, a well known place for spending amazing holidays for its beautiful beaches and natural surroundings and all this are so well described that you really feel like you are one of the visitors having a nice cup of coffee and maybe the couple at the next table are the characters from this amazing book. The book is from Ellie’s POV but you can easily read between the lines that Owen is there for whatever she needs-time,space,human contact, love. Having to live with anxiety even for the smallest things that most of us take for granted is a totally different world for that person and the author manages to explain and makes us more aware of this by creating a very strong and sensible woman that we can relate to as ourselves or as one of our friends or relatives. The writing style is a bit different from what I usually read but nevertheless wonderful and kept me up all night to read and finish it. The slow burn is very slow but it’s exactly what these characters needed so Ellie could feel worthy of Owen’s attention, friendship, desire, love and everything he has to offer.Owen is so open, patient, loving and careful, he has his own struggles with his career as a writer from his day by day to do list/work in progress tasks to his deadlines. I felt so much for Ellie when I read about her family and relatives not understanding her or supporting her in any way which made me think more about our life and how small gestures can change everything. Overall an amazing read and will be definitely reading and recommend this author more ❤️
New Tides was a great story that had me so emotional, I had to wait to write this review for a bit. It's the story of Ellie Carter, who is so traumatized by her past, that she's run away from everything to hide out from people, including her family. And they didn't understand why because she was never able to talk to anyone about it. A few years later she finds herself starting to push her boundaries, although it was a slow paced thing. And that's what I found really realistic, as it wasn't even close to over night, and every time she thought she had something handled, it would take 2 steps back. This is when I really started to see her getting stronger, though I hurt for her like it had happened to me. That's how great Rachel De Lune's writing style is. She meets a man named Owen, who wants to be with her, but knows that she needs time, so he was the perfect man in my opinion. As the story went on, those steps forward got better & better, but again, she wasn't over everything all the way. My heart hurt for her so much, like physically hurt that I found my eyes leaking more than once. Anyway, my one issue after all that powerful angst, was the ending. It just seemed a bit more rushed than I would have liked to see. So that's all from me, and I'm truly excited to read the next book in this new trilogy! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
New Tides By Rachel De Lune 5 stars Reviewed on behalf of 3 Degrees of Fiction Book Blog
I think this is possibly one of the most amazing books that I have ever read. I finished this book over a week ago but it has taken me a while to try and find the words to give this book justice. I am so lucky to have read books by this author before but this one was completely different. It spoke to me on so many different levels, at time I am sure I was reading about myself. The way, in which Ms De Lune writes about Ellie was just so real and raw, it was honestly like I could feel everything she did, every anxious moment, every time her heart started to beat that little bit faster as she encountered situations that made her uncomfortable – I was right there with her. I was 100% immersed in Ellie’s story and I completely sympathised and empathised with every step of her journey. Apart from the amazing characters what made this book for me was the writing. It was just so, so beautiful. Ms De Lune wrote with such compassion and was so respectful, it was clear that she had taken her time to make sure that her portrayal of a character who suffered like Ellie was realistic and true to life. I can 100% say that she did above and beyond this. New Tides is a stunning story and one that I won’t forget for a while. I am so glad I read it and I cannot recommend it enough
It isn't very often that you can come across a character in a book that you completely connect with. I connected with Ellie in so many ways... My heart broke for her....
This book has left me utterly speechless. This book leaves you with emotions that are raw and real. I just couldn't put this book down.
Rachel De Lune is known for putting your emotions through the ringer. Well, New Tides certainly had me feeling every emotion you could feel.
Ellie was severely broken from something that happened in her past. She closed herself off to the world. Her days were filled with work that she did from home. More importantly, she buried herself in her books. She loved to read. Things begin to unfold when she takes on a new client. Certainly one she wasn't expecting.
Owen, my sweet and loving Owen. Get ready to meet one of the best well-written male characters in any of the books Rachel has ever written.
I am going to leave this review with that. If I keep going I will spoil the book..
PRE-ORDER THIS ONE!! BUY IT ON RELEASE DAY... IT doesn't matter JUST BUY IT.. You won't be sorry.... One of the best books I've read all year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I didn't really know what to expect with this book, but I still had no hesitation in wanting to pick it up and devour it, just like I have with every other book Rachel has written. She is proving that she can write in so many different genres. This book threw me for a loop and I honestly didn’t know how to process it. I loved it. The characters were endearing and their personalities tugged at my heartstrings. This book is a slow-burning relationship set in the beautiful and scenic area of Cornwall, UK. The images that Rachel has brought forth throughout the book have made me long to visit and vacation someday. The slow-burn may have gotten frustrating for me at times but it shouldn’t have. It is exactly what these characters needed to build their trust and feelings for each other.
What threw me about this book is the struggle the main character Ellie had with moving on with life after a very traumatic experience in her life. Ellie’s struggle opened my eyes to life living with anxiety. Ms. De Lune was able to convey the very real issues that anxiety can cause in the lives of those debilitated by it.
As a non-sufferer, I was shocked at how even the littlest things could cause such upheaval in Ellie’s world. I now have a new found understanding and hopefully empathy for those people in my life who deal with these very same issues on a daily basis. Even accomplishing the simplest of tasks like grabbing a coffee at the local shop can be overwhelming for some. I truly hope the readers don't see Ellie as a weak character. She is strong! She is moving forward on a journey to heal, on a journey to wellness, and I hope readers get a sense of peace and understanding for this very real yet sometimes invisible disease.
Owen’s character was so patient, kind, and loving. It was impossible not to fall in love with him. He did everything right in his journey with Ellie. Since this book is only from Ellie’s POV, we sometimes have to wonder what Owen is thinking but Rachel always made sure he was open to conversation with Ellie to let us in to his head and know where his head was at. It made me love him even more.
What I loved most about Owen was his occupation and loved hearing about his daily writing struggles and deadlines, especially the wrath he may face from his editor. Rachel will understand why I loved these lines and she really made me chuckle.
I look forward the remaining books in The Cornwall Tides Trilogy and feel like they will just get better with each book. Ellie’s best friend and assistant, Kerenza, is instrumental in moving Ellie forward in her healing process and it seems like she is a real go-getter. I am so very excited to read all about her own struggle with love.
This book was really great. An author I have heard about and keep meaning to read for some time. Finally the opportunity arose to read New Tides, and as my first book from this author I thoroughly enjoyed it.
In this story we meet Ellie. We are introduced to her as she is leaving her old life behind, and moving to a small village in Cornwall. Away from London and away from the past the haunts her. Throughout the book there is an element of intrigue, as to what truly happened to her (although we have our suspicions) and why she's distanced herself from so many people in her life.
We also meet Owen in this story. I don't want to say too much, but I really loved his character. After starting off on slightly the wrong footing with Ellie, who struggles with trust at the best of times, they manage to form a special friendship. I loved his personality, taking things slowly and truly understanding Ellie's struggles and anxieties.
This is an emotional story with just the right amount of angst. A slow-burn romance, filled with aspects of 'real-life. I could really understand and get a good feel for the characters struggles, the areas that Ellie attempted to tackle as she tried so hard to move on with her life and not let things hold her back. And I loved how Owen supported her through that every step of the way.. almost...
This was a really sweet and romantic story which I didn't want to end. I can't wait to read more from this author in the future.
Rachel De Lune is a new author to me, but if she writes like this all the time, then she definitely has got a new fan. NEW TIDES was an emotionally gripping read that had me hooked upon every word.
Ellie Carter broke my heart. Her anxiety, the result of a traumatic incident in her past, has her guarded in all aspects of her life. Such was Ms De Lune's writing, that I could feel everything that Ellie was experiencing. The imagery she gave was simply exquisite. Owen Riggs was the perfect man. He never rushed Ellie in any way, his patience towards her was simply beautiful, he allowed her to set the pace with their friendship. Their romance was one which burnt slowly, although it was obvious how they felt. Ms De Lune allowed them to build their relationship in small gentle steps.
This was an excellent beginning to Ms de Lune's CORNWALL TRILOGY. I look forward to reading the next instalments. A recommended read.
“The author’s words speak to me as if she wrote them just for me”
Truer words have not been spoken in concerns to this book. How can I even begin to describe all the emotions I felt over the course of this book? Or how much I was able to relate with the main character Ellie. When she spoke of the written word being her only solace and escape, I felt that she was taking the words right out of my brain because time and time again I’ve thought the same thing.
This book was both the best thing ever and the hardest book I’ve ever had to read because it made me realize that like Ellie, I’ve been hiding behind the pages of these wonderful books. That it’s so much easier to get lost in my kindle than face the real world and I cannot thank Rachel De Lune enough for writing these words that were able to make me see that having anxiety should not be a reason as to why you remain behind closed doors with your head stuck in a book.
“Step by step. One foot in front of the other. The sun will rise, and the tides will change”
If you do one thing today, let it be to read this book because it may just be one of the best books you’ve ever read.
after suffering a horrific trauma, ellie carter runs away from her life and sets up shop in a tiny town in cornwall. new tides opens on this moment, but jumps ahead pretty quickly. it's several years later and ellie still suffers from panic attacks and keeps the world at arm's length. when her favorite author asks to become her client they strike up a correspondence.
when ellie finally works up the courage to meet in person she's horrified to realize the person she believed was olivia wren, was a guy named owen.in spite of her skittishness, she is compelled to seek owen out. and slowly she begins to open herself up to the world she shut herself away from.
and owen recognizes that she is traumatized and is gentle and willing to take things at ellie's pace. because of the level of trauma ellie suffered this is a slow burn, and it takes a lot of work for ellie and owen to find a way forward together.
**new tides published on october 29, 2018. i received an advance reader copy courtesy of bare naked words.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I stared this book but what a beautiful but heart wrenching story this is. Set in the stunning and laid back Cornwall we meet Ellie. Ellie was has such a traumatic past that it has changed her future so much...but Ellie still shines through and won't let it keep her down altogether. Getting lost in the pages of her books day in day out helps keep the anxiety at bay but her heart starts to race when a new author she loves gets in touch. But all is not as it seems. Owen is the man that everyone wants.. hes patient, he's kind, he's just 1000% all there for Ellie and what she wants/needs. Love these guys together and to see them growing as a couple together was beautiful. A few blips, bumps and back tracking moments means this story isn't an easy one but it keeps you hooked into the words. *Read as part of KU*
I loved reading Ellie's story. Despite it being hard and traumatic at times.
You can see that Rachel De Lune is growing so much as an author and opening herself up to other genre's and styles. This book is the best of hers yet. Trust me, I have read them all. The way she writes about the anxiety and depression. The flashbacks are felt in the pages of this book. They hit you bang centre in yiur chest. You hold your breath willing Ellie to pull through and grab the love that's in front of her. But it isn't that easy.
We all need an Owen in our lives. Someone to be there to support us in times of need. To be our anchor.
I can't wait for the next book in the series to come along. I hope we see more of Ellie and Owen and Ellie's recovery.
This was such a good read. I wasn't too sure what to expect from the blurb but the author has certainly blown me away. Ellie was such a great character, strong in the face of adversity. Her past experiences has certainly marked her and her escape to Cornwall where she could control some aspects of her life was very well written. The author has taken a painful subject and treated it with care. Getting Ellie to open up to her friend and showing how her experience colours her life on a daily basis was great. Owen was a great character as well, patient understanding and a willing ear. I also loved her friend Kerenza. She was a gem, being a strong friend for Ellie over the years and through her budding new start. A well written book. Highly recommend.
I received an ARC of New Tides in return for an honest review. I’ve read most of Rachel’s work and this has surpassed all I’ve read so far from her. Beautifully and sensitively written, dealing with some heartrending issues. Set in the beautiful county of Cornwall, the story follows Ellie’s story of overcoming a traumatic and painful event in her past. I particularly loved Owen, what an amazing guy. The whole range of emotions had me sobbing, the author certainly knows how to make you feel as though you’re one of the characters in her books. Looking forward to book 2.
New Tide tells the story of a survivor, and the long path she chose for recovery. Ellie has personal demons that haunt her and keep her from taking part in life. A new friend and her favorite pastime (reading on her Kindle) help her get by. After the opportunity to meet and work for her favorite new Author, her life takes a big turn. This story will touch everyone who has ever had anxiety issues. It is a wonderful read.
This is my first time reading Rachel. I will be reading more. Loved this book!!! Ellie has been through hell and is trying to make her way back. Owen comes into her life unexpectedly and starts showing her there is life and he wants to show her how to live. They both have things they aren't proud of, but the feelings they have for each other are hard to ignore. Owen stays strong for Ellie and she starts to open up and let herself feel again.
Ellie has a lot of issues because of her traumatic past and Owen is the perfect guy for her. He has the patience and understanding that she needs. It's a slow burn romance as Owen helps Ellie overcome her past so that they can have a real chance at a future together. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
This was not the typical story that Rachel writes but I loved it. Emotional, trauma, strong characters and just an overall great book. Ellie has a traumatic past and flees to the coastal town in hopes of getting away from her past. Meets Owen and is drawn to him almost immediately. She needs to overcome her past to be able to make a future with him. With Owen's help maybe she can.
This was absolutely fantastic. This is my fist book from this author but it definitely won't be my last. It was so well written and filled with so much emotion, you feel everything along with the characters. Ellie has anxiety and I love the way that's portrayed in such a realistic manner. Then there Owen, sweet sweet Own, he is incredible and everything Ellie needs. I highly recommend this book.
I enjoyed reading New Tides and Ellie’s journey to healing. I love how patient Owen is with her, giving her what she needs even before she knows it. There are triggers in the book, but it’s handled with care. The writing is smooth and flows nicely together as Ellie walks to her future and grows from her past.
I absolutely LOVED New Tides by Rachel De Lune. I was captivated from the start.
Ellie's journey to her healing was a hard road. She is such a strong, determined woman. After the tramua she endured my heart broke for her. I mean how does one overcome what she went through? I LOVED watching her character grow. But can she trust again?
Owen is so patient with her. His character is EVERYTHING I love in a leading man. He's patient, kind, understanding, he's what Ellie needs.
The writing and plot flow PERFECTLY! I will say this book does have triggers for some people, but I thought it was a FANTASTIC read.
*I voluntarily read an advance copy. This is my honest review.*
>Book Review – New Tides >I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 1st in the Cornwall Tides series and ends in an HEA. Ellie is a young lady traumatized after a gang rape and attack 3 years prior. Somehow, her family did not know anything about her attack, even though she lived in the same town as her parents and sister. She was in the hospital for quite a while, which makes it hard to believe her family would not question where she was for so long. Ellie up and changes towns, working on-line for the most part and hiding from life. >Owen is a romance writer writing under a female pseudonym. He hires Ellie as his accountant and because she is a fan of his books, she meets with him in person, expecting to meet a woman. Owen is the most understanding man ever written. Ellie has tons of triggers that send her into a panic attack and Owen conquers them all. I loved how the panic attacks were described. They seemed very realistic. The couple takes baby steps in trying to have a relationship, which was so sweet. >The story has a fairly weak plot, with the story’s climax being when Ellie tells all of her story to Owen. There isn’t any real threat to anyone in the plot. The story is very sweet, but drags a bit. This book is appropriate for an adult audience, although the romance is PG-13 and not explicit. I am giving this book 4 stars.
This is an amazing beginning to a Trilogy. I was totally blown away by this book. I cried and I laughed and I yelled at my kindle because I was getting so emotional.
We meet Ellie who is running from her past. She has had a terrible life and I can relate to some of the things she went through so I was so emotionally invested in Ellie and what happened to her. She flees to Cornwall after everything that has happened to her to start her new life but she has no idea where to start. Then she meets Owen and oh man he means well but he messes up and shatters Ellie's trust.
Owen knows he wants Ellie but he makes a mistake and regrets it right away. He spends all his time trying to restore his trust to Ellie and what he does is amazing. He is such a sweet heart and does everything to show Ellie that he loves her and she is the one for him.
This is a must read love story that will have your heart pounding as you read needing to know what happens next.
This was a story that will resonate with so many people but it also evokes a feeling of melancholy, perhaps because it seemed to rain all the time! It is also a book that brings hope that there can be a future and the importance of real friends in a time of need. Ellie had suffered unimaginable hurt and ran away to try and heal, but she was not very successful and it was only because of her assistant Kes and her dog George that she was coping at all. Then a romance novel spoke to her and when she met the author her life changed. Rachel de Lune does not tie everything up in bow, but she does offer hope and a happy ending.
