The evil Emperor is in our heroine’s sights—all she needs now is a military and cultural miracle.
It’s the dead of winter, and the Terrans hold the line as the Conglomeration is holed-up in a makeshift camp, prickly with nervous excitement, preparing for a massive offensive into wealthy Merriton—the gaudy Conglomerate city in which Sal was enslaved as a child. But the next battle will have to wait. Sometimes, things even more personal than war get in the way—like hormones.
Unimaginably powerful Salryc Luxx, Kaisae of all Iliri and de facto Queen of the Conglomerate forces, is finally brought to her knees—by ovulation. So is Shade, her partbred iliri warrior-sister. To avoid hormonal confusion, and, well, the entire Black Blades from instinctively tearing each other and all other male allies apart with protective rage and sexual prowess, all parties are separated—iliri from humans, men from women, Sal from her pack—stuck in a holding pattern while the battle lines move closer. And nobody is more annoyed by being cooped up with nothing to do than Sal.
When the women finally free themselves from self-imposed quarantine (and reforge their sexual bonds with their mates), it’s back to work. The allies continue to collaborate, this time enacting a meticulously-laid plan to quietly infiltrate Terric’s diamond of a city as spies. Part of the fun in this volume is the detailed unfolding of the riveting military plot, which has all the thrills of a Russian spy novel.
Like all of the Rise of the Iliri novels, this epic fantasy story focuses on loving relationships, platonic and romantic, with a steamy reverse harem theme. Sal’s erotic love scenes with her three male mates are explicit and almost unbearably titillating, although not for all readers—especially those under eighteen.
Holy moly guys! We are getting into the good stuff now!!
Sal is in Merriton now. Where everything began. She is having to face her past, get over the demons that still haunt her (though she believes they don't).
We also see how they guys react to TWO females in estra. I loved seeing their possessive side and what exactly they are willing to do to get to their females.
And we get Enik has an official part of the harem. As well as a number four coming in. Believe me, it is NOT AT ALL who you think. I was completing blindsided by the guy. But in a good way!
I think what made this book feel more real...well I can't tell you exactly because it will be a major spoiler. Let's just say that it's nice to see how something good can come from a bad situation.
One of my favorite things about this book is that we got SEVERAL different POV's in this book. In previous one, we heard mostly from Sal's. Maybe a few others. That is not the case in this book. I think there is at least four different ones. It was fabulous. Super nice to see what happening outside Sal's little bubble.
Rise of the Iliri is one of my top three favorite reverse harem series. It is one I can always come back to when I'm in a slump, or just missing the characters. This book was no different. I'm so glad we are getting to see a new side of Sal, her mates, and the others in her army. It is refreshing to see and didn't take away from the overall plotline.
If this is a series that you haven't started yet, you need to do so. Your emotions will be all over the place, but it's in a good way. I love that I feel like I'm experiencing the characters emotions myself.
There are spoilers in this review. This series was turning out to be one of my top fantasy favourites. But, there is just one thing I absolutely despised in this book. I hate, hate how everyone is trashing Blaec after his 'death'. Yes, he kept his distance; yes, he did not mingle well with all of Sal's mates. But ever wonder that maybe he did it on purpose? They should have realised and acknowledged his sacrifice. He knew he was going to die so he wanted to spare them as much pain as he could. Everything he did was for them. How can they not realise that! He deserves more ! He does not deserve especially Sal to announce that she didn't love him as much as the others & that he was a pale imitation of someone else!! Traitor comes close to what I feel regarding Sal's announcements about Blaec. That girl did not deserve the amount of loyalty & effort Blaec gave her & frankly I'm losing my admiration for the character. I don't know why but it felt like Auryn was trying to change the reader's sentiment about Blaec , trying to highlight his perceived failures and decisions which though may not have been right at the time, but he does not deserve to be desecrated like this after everything he's done. Also, I feel like there's a chance Blaec can come back. From what I gathered from the story, Blaec is not totally gone. He's stuck in the void. I feel like if they could fetch his corpse, repair it & then fetch his soul using their bond, they can give him back his life. But, my experience with authors indicate there's less than one percent chance of this happening ( Authors do love breaking our hearts!). Even if he did come back, after the things his supposed 'true love' has admitted about him, they do not deserve him any longer!!
Edit - I have finished the series and I still feel the same. I don't know why but this is consistent with each and every one of Auryn's books I read. Her world building is totally unique and the storylines start out phenomenal...and then inevitably she does something in the midst of the series that either totally destroys the vibe or plain turns me off the book. It's sad because honestly I keep getting disappointed in each of her books.
The title of this book is seriously fitting. The battle for control of Merriton seriously falls apart. It's Anglia's first loss. Sal manages to win in another way, though. It takes her mates and her friends and allies to make her see that, so when she could have fallen apart, she doesn't. Sal is more determined than ever and finally getting it through her stubborn head that everything isn't on her. I approve.
Several people make some bad decisions in this book, which is what causes so many issues and honestly, Terric simply outplayed them this time. It works out and it looks like Merriton won't be the total win that Terric wanted, either.
Relationship wise, more folks are hooking up. There were some beautiful moments between Shade, Artic and Ghost. I hope Shade can overcome this newest loss, though it will be hard. Artic and Ghost will definitely give her all the love she needs. Tanya gets herself a second mate as well. Honestly, that one blindsided me, but Dom is into it and it makes me happy for that particular Blade. I'm wondering if Kesh will make his way in there as well considering I'm fairly sure that he still has feelings for Rayna. Pig and Keeya finally get it together as well. That's another prophecy of Blaec's that has now come true. And Razor makes me so happy in this book. I've wanted him to step up to Sal ever since she and Jase teamed up with him way back in the beginning. I love that guy.
There were some other awesome developments as well. When things start coming down around their ears, Jase really takes charge. Zep seems to have found an illiri skill. Kolt is still having weird dreams and I have to wonder if that guy has managed to turn himself into a ghost. I enjoyed getting to see Tyr and Geo teamed up and appreciated getting a bit of POV from Vanja of all people. Ran really stood up for Sal at the end and I love what happened because of it. I really liked the epilogue as well. Looks like Arrawhen is coming along.
Wow...just wow. I am already soooo mad that I finished the damn book so fast. I even tried to drag it out!!! Ok...well by that I meant I put it down long enough to do mommy things and sleep like 2 hours last night. Ok on to the review!!! SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!
So I am not let down at all. The whole thing with Razor caught me completely off guard!!!! Was so not expecting that to happen but am really glad it did because it always annoyed me with how little his appearances were. But umm....I still want Tyr!!!! But I don't think I will get him :( because of the comment Zep made about Sal's mates being a table to hold her up and each table has four legs...but heeeey plenty of tables have odd crap under them!!! Just shove Tyr in there somewhere....please? I wanted to cry over Ran and how much of a good father he has been to Sal, I was terrified something would happen to him because I think his death would break her just as bad as one of her mates deaths. I EVEN GOT MY HUSBAND TO START READING THE SERIES!!! I read him a bit from one of the battles and he was in love, one of those guys that loves all things military. This has been by far my most favorite series and to think people actually told me not to bother reading it because I wouldn't like it, but when I picked up book one again to get ready for this release it was like meeting up with old friends again, when Zep died and came back and when Blaec died I cried harder than I have with any book I've ever read. Hadley the way you write you make it so the reader truly connects to the characters and feels like we are right there with them. Thank you so much for your books and I can't wait (no seriously it's 2:30 in the morning and it's only been like 20 minutes since I finished and I am already huffing and puffing like a two year old cause I can't open the next one so snap snap woman get on it lol jk jk..um sorta) for the next one.
Look. I haven’t given a book 5 stars in months. I’m not a person who says that every single book is the best book that I’ve ever read. If I five star a book, it’s because it’s amaze balls. Auryn does NOT disappoint in this book.
As always, running thoughts:
OMG IM SO READY.
Man I’m so happy right now. I can’t stop smiling. But I swear, Blaec needs to stay *dead*. In all ways. Forever.
I love that Jase won’t leave the room. This is why I like him the most.
RAZOR?! RAZOR?! YAAAS.
I worry about why Jase didn’t want to be a part of it. (Oh. That makes total sense but also OMG. One of them better not die.)
Nothing has ever been as hot as this is right now.
Um. It better not be a premonition. *goes back to check mate schedule. Checks with honeybruhs*
No no no no. No.
I don’t like Dark Heart at all. Also, Hax left his commanding officer to go with Sal in a fight and that makes me like him even less. He shouldn’t have been at her left. He gives me the heebie jeebies. #teamthroatpunchhax
ohmygodohmygodohmygod
Okay. I will forgive Blaec for his past transgressions.
There are some authors who can’t handle this many perspectives when writing. Auryn has so many balls up in the air and never drops any of them.
“Explain to me again how you lost my daughter.” Favorite. Line. Ever.
Ran is the best human alive. Ever. Change my mind.
REREAD: JULY 2022 Rise of the Iliri is one of my favourite epic fantasy series, and I'm doing a reread after the author released updated versions of all the books.
Upheaval is the eighth book (of 11) in the Rise of the Iliri series by Auryn Hadley. In this instalment, Sal is going through it – she's back in Merriton, where her story began. Poor decisions are made, and Anglia is ultimately outplayed by Terric this time.
Sal's harem is still growing, and she finds her unexpected fourth in this book. It's a bit of a spoiler to say who it is, but I found it to be a very welcomed and pleasant surprise! I absolutely love Ran and his developing farther-daughter relationship with Sal – he must be protected.
For me, what makes this series so special is the fact that it's the complete package. It's not a case that the plot is okay, but I love the characters or vice versa. It doesn't make me deal with an annoying FMC just to get more of the hot dirty, talking alpha male. It's just the complete package, and it's been that way consistently. I love the characters and the plot, and with each book, I love the series even more.
Favorite series EVER!! I've loved this series so much I bought the paperbacks so I can read them again whenever I choose.. can't wait for the next book!!
Another fantastic exploration of love and prejudice
I love the Rise of the Iliri series. In fact, it's probably one of my favorite series ever. Upheaval is book 8 in Auryn Hadley's science fantasy series, and she keeps on delivering. I'll admit, the covers turned me off this series for a long time. Even after I read the first book in her series Gamer Girls, I was leery. But I finally began reading this series and now I can't get enough (though the covers still are off-putting...sorry Auryn).
Auryn has this insane ability to really make the characters real...and she doesn't pull punches. You don't know if your favorite character will live to the end. You don't know if the character you hate will become the one you love. Nothing is sacred...except the story. The hardest thing, I think, when reading a long series is maintaining the momentum and depth that you get in the first few books. Too often, authors seem to stop trying once they get through the first few books. This is NOT the case with RotI. Upheaval is just as compelling and complete as Bloodlust was. I seriously stayed up all night to read it in one go.
The series is about a war, on the surface. But it's really about hate and prejudice. It's about love (of yourself and others). It's about power. The evolution of power and status throughout the series is ever-changing. Upheaval is that, but more. There are more changes and some quite unexpected turns of events in this book. At the same time, there are things that have been brewing since before the first book that are finally coming to fruition. I once again found myself at the end and flipping pages to see if there was more. If you don't like cliffhangers, wait till the series is complete. Hadley has zero issues with leaving her readers hanging.
Hadley's world is fraught with man-made issues. Slavery, racism, and war fill the pages, but over all that is the idea of hope. The idea that the life we are born to is not the life we are stuck with. Characters in the book often describe the scent of Sal as "hope." And as we get further and further into the story, this becomes more and more tangible. Even when the army suffers defeat, even when Sal feels hopeless, Hadley gives the reader hope that it will all work out. That the pattern has a purpose. At the same time, you know she could write something that will truly destroy you. So while devouring the book, I was always braced for something terribly tragic to happen. The Rise of the Iliri is a beautiful melding of science and fantasy. Upheaval ups the ante, leaving the reader balancing on a ledge wondering if maybe, just maybe, there will not be a happy ending.
Rise of the Iliri is one of those rare and special gems that I just happen to stumble upon. When I began to get into Reverse Harem books I kept skipping over this series because I just didn't think I'd enjoy it. Oh how wrong I was. This series has pretty much become one of my top 5 series of all time. I can read these books obsessively, meaning I can read them all till the current release and the start straight back on the first book and do it all over again.
What makes this series so special is the fact that it's the complete package. It's not a case of the plot is okay but I love the characters or vice versa. It doesn't make me have to deal with a annoying female just to get more of the hot dirty talking alpha male. It's just the complete package and it's been that way consistently. I love the characters. I completely love the plot and with each release I love the series even more.
Sal has to face her past in this one and certain parts had my heart breaking for everyone. I'm so happy about Kolt and yeah, I sure as hell got a surprise in this one (a happy one) it can get a bit confusing at times with all the military talk and who every unit and person is, but for me the map at the beginning of the book actually helped.
The series is planned for 10 books so we still get at least two more but I'm already dreading the end of this series. Each book already gives me a book hangover, I can't imagine how it's going to be when the series ends.
Though I have to admit, one of my favorites things about this series is the fact that a important plot point is the superiority complex of humans. In that aspect it reminds me of another of my top 5 series The Others by Anne Bishop. I've always wished that there was something in reality that could knock us down a notch and put us in our place. We aren't as superior as we'd like to think. I'll also never understand the concept of hating someone just based on their gender, sexuality, skin color, and/or religion so I tend to enjoy books that put judgmental people in their place.
If you don't mind or even enjoy Reverse Harem you should totally give this series a try.
Still a good story but I almost DNF pretty much in the first few chapters.
Why?! Because eventhough Blaec died protecting everyone, they are still treating him like crap.
Right from the start it confirms that Blaec indeed is trap all alone on the void and then to add salt to the wound (or however that saying goes ... sorry but English is my second language so I'm never sure of most sayings... xD), Sal literally tells Kolt that he is twice the man that Blaec could ever be and that Blaec was always a pale imitation to the man that Sal first fell in love with (Kolt). Why couldn't she just say that she loved them both and that there is no comparison because they are different. Why must she keep putting down Blaec's memory like that?
And then when Sal meets Hax she again points out that she could never again be with someone like Blaec (Hax in this case) because he almost destroyed her. And I would like to point out that Blaec made it his mission to find capable Illiri in the military and to not only give them the respect and honor they deserved but also a pack/family. I mean, he literally saved them from pretty horrific backgrounds, and still now that he is gone, he is suddenly weak and pathetic just because he purposedly kept Sal at arms lenght through any means necesary because he always knew he had to die and that she had to keep going without him for the good of the world. Is that a weak and pathetic man?!
And it's not only Sal, Zep says he knew Blaec for many years and loved and respected him but then also starts talking crap about him. Same with Pig. And yet, they all keep using "Blaec's Rules" and none of them would even be in the positions they are if it wasn't for Blaec.
And I know not many even liked his character (yes, I am aware they are all fictional characters ;) ) but it makes me mad when an author makes a character important and then poof! not only do they kill them but then try to make them into sort of villains. I guess is the human in me, but it just doesn't feel right.
Ok. Now that my rant about Blaec is over... xD
What I did like about this book is that not only was there a lot of action, but there was also those erotic scenes that I saw many complained about the lack off on the reviews for previews books, and most importantly RAZOR IS FINALLY MAKING HIS MOVE!!! HALELUYA!!!! Now I just need Tyr and I will be happy. :)
We also see more of the dava/daughter relationship between Ran and Sal and some pretty interesting couples formed (Im not gonna spoil these cause I loved how they came to be).
The action was pretty good and the way Sal and Razor's relationship is actually taking it's time is a nice change.
Overall, I liked the book, I just don't like how the author is treating certain characters, which has made me even stop liking or even resenting some of the main characters.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I have read this series several times waiting for the release of the next book, and YES I put it off reading it! The reason, who wants to wait that long for the next book!!!
Ok, so lets all be honest Auryn is a knock it out of the ballpark kind of writer! She knows how to write that will suck the reader in and make them forget that is dinner time, bedtime or almost time for the morning alarm to go off! I have read almost very thing she has put out and this book did NOT leave me disappointed. I did feel that at points in the story there was a little bit of lag or less action and more story, but as I read those "lag" points added to the story, the twist, the turns, the oh my points and truly gave the reader a bit more.
As we continue our journey with Sal, her harem, the Black Blades, Devil Dogs, and the entire continent as they struggle to win the war with the Emperor of Terric who has engaged them in. This book gives us the chance to meet more of the family pack Sal has created; the background characters take on more of a leading role(Razor to name one). The twist is the way the the Black Blades split up to infiltrate a city the city of Merriton. This is a major part of the story line, and it gives way to how each member trust another, the love each person has for another and the lengths the family will go to to ensure the safety of its members and their Kaisae. We also get a better glimpse of the General Ran, the Kaisae's dava, which only makes you love him more!
The book is hope, love and strength! Truly a intriguing story and I cant wait for the next book to come out!
I took a small break from the Iliri when this book wasn’t out yet, and I had caught up to the series. So I waited for a few more to come out before I went back.
So naturally I forgot a lot. However it wasn’t difficult to figure out what happened in previous books. The epilogue through me for a loop because I forgot about those people. As right now, they are semi minor characters. That’s the tough part with reading a series like this with such a large cast, someone’s bound to get forgotten, or missed. Luckily it wasn’t too hard to pick up what was going on.
But this book was a bit more surprising in what happens. And what’s in the relationship front. I didn’t really get the vibe that I’m still waiting to see if Tyr becomes one of the harem. Be really nice if he did. I think he supports her well. This whole story is so involved, but it’s awesome.
What happens in this book sucks. But one question that wasn’t answered was
Sal is on her way to Merriton - after she and Shade deal with her estrus. I really liked their time away from the war and seeing the guys get a little crazy. The time is Merriton was hard, but I loved seeing Sal grow nad come to terms with her past, plush getting more time with Razor :) I also liked that not everything works out perfectly, and seeing them have to re-group. This is definitely one of my favorite series!
So good. I can't wait to see how the series ends but I don't want it to end. I love the characters. I love their love for each other and their people. Ms. Hadley writes so well. You would kill yourself trying to find typos and grammar mistakes. These books are epic. You have to read the series in sequence. They are not stand alone. This series is awesome.
I read books 1-8 in quick succession so am giving a review on the series, to date.
The world building is excellent. Humans colonize a distant world, low on metals and with indigenous life. Thousands of years later, the resulting society is one of basically medieval tech, but with ceramics and resin replacing metals. Very clever extrapolation and made more interesting with the integration of the indigenous life.
The series is both a Sci-Fi/Paranormal-esque epic adventure and a romance. The heat level of the romance rises throughout the series, not hitting 'erotic' levels until about Book 7 and starting relatively low, though all well written at the heat levels they're at. I mention this because this switch/transition may surprise some readers. At times, the balance between the epic adventure and the romance is off a bit, throwing off the pacing of the overall story, but not so much as to want you to stop reading - it remains engaging throughout.
The plot, and plot twists, of the epic adventure are well done, creating a well-crafted story that could stand alone, even without the romance. There are some quibbles around how the military is organized, specifically around unit sizes and organization, but unless you have a background in the area or read a lot of military fantasy/historicals you probably won't notice. The fight scenes are well done, even if all in the contexts of small skirmishes.
Overall, I'm thoroughly enjoying this series. It's based in a wonderfully crafted world and includes some amazing elements. It's only some nits about how these elements are put together that keeps this from getting 5 stars.
Sal is through being manipulated by fate and she is determined to that she won’t lose any more of her friends and family to it’s cruel twists. However, every Kaisae before her has surrendered to insanity or death and she is sure that she is going to die before the end of the war. Her loved ones aren’t so sure that Sal has to die or that she will go insane. They are sure if they can just get her to rely on them all just a bit more she won’t disappear in her own head.
This book is all about fighting Ayati and accepting help when it comes.
The series just gets better and better. I really need the next book soon!
3.5 stars. I would have give this book a higher rating if the characters would stop having instances where, they act or think against their personalities, making stupid decisions. They waffle back and forth between who they are and a way to drive the story. A lot of things that happen do not make sense and just seem to drag the story along. I did a lot of skimming in this book. This whole series could be condensed in less books but, they are worth the read.
This entire series so far has been absolutely amazing. I am totally bummed that the next book isn't out yet. I guess I have to learn to be patient. You will not be sorry to have read this entire series.
I was really disappointed in this book. Mrs.Hadley, we readers can figure out plots and stratedies, you know. For our heroine being cought off guard again with all her powers, not cool. I couldn't finish the book, I was so frustrated. Trust your Beta readers when they tell you it's overkill!!!
Please note that this review is for the SERIES, not the individual book.
Ok. I don't know where to begin. I want to say ALL the things because this series is all kinds of amazing. There is a not zero chance that my excitement may get away with me, so please excuse any seemingly random bits of rambling.
First off, this is an 11 book completed series that absolutely MUST be read in order as a series. You won't make heads nor tails of it if you try to pick and choose. This series is a little similar to the Five Fangs series by Mary Ann Weir. While there is a main character and her harem, this one also has a lot of communal storylines and relationships. It's one of the few 3rd person PoV that I have truly enjoyed, as it gives a better perspective on the entire experience. And this IS an experience.
A.H. Hadley is a master wordsmith. I've read most of her bibliography and enjoyed all of it. I was a bit skeptical about this series as 11 books are a heckuva commitment. I've been it recommended everywhere though, so I finally decided to give it a shot, and I wish I could personally thank every person who suggested it.
Her world building is a skill that most authors could learn from. From the rich history of the land and people to the customs and motives of the people, I was constantly taking information in and assimilating it from one book to the next. The true talent, though, is the fact that I never once felt overwhelmed by it.
The foundation is beautifully laid for the complex web of plotlines that permeates this story. There are plots within plots and plans without plans. Rise of the Iliri is a masterwork of the uncertain. I THOUGHT I knew what I was getting into. At numerous times while reading, I THOUGHT I knew what to expect. I was unprepared, and I loved every moment.
I do disagree with many of my fellow readers, however. This series was recommended as a reverse harem romance, but I'm just not sold on that. Yes, romance plays a part in the story arc. Yes, there are multiple men in a relationship with one woman. So, I guess that technically, they are correct. But it is so much more. The author labels it as "a complete epic science-fantasy story." I personally think it's more of a space opera. There is romance, but also anger and hatred, good verses evil, overcoming adversity, and amazing action sequences, plus plenty more that I can't find the words for. (But for the smut hounds, there are ample shenanigans which are relatively detailed and beautifully written)
The characters are never two dimensional. They start out fully fleshed out, but as the story progresses, they change. Traits become deeper. Thoughts become richer. They grow - as individuals as well as the groups. Especially Sal, the female main character. She has an entire evolution/metamorphosis arc that is without compare. I have never read anything quite like it.
If I could, I would rate this series as an 8 out of 5 stars. It exceeded my expectations in every way. Yes, it is a time commitment, but in all honesty, I didn't realize it. I started reading in book 1 and it consumed my attention until I closed book 11.

Please stop reading here if spoilers in the form of content warnings are a deal breaker for you. This series has some heavy s#!t in it that I wasn't really prepared for, so I'm going to let you in on it. Mental health matters.

Expect graphic vi0|ence, gore, a metric crap ton of unaliving, grief & loss, past SA for several characters, extreme prejudice & discrimination as well as humiliation and degradation (and not the kinky fun kind.) The FMC was conscripted into the military from her owner's home. Slavery is all through this story, so be prepared. And this is the one that kinda frakked me up - one of the MCs dies. Usually, I pass on books where that is in the content warning, however, in this instance, it becomes a jumping off point for the continuing progression of the story. I would encourage you to not let that particular TW prevent you from an otherwise truly remarkable reading experience.
*NOTE: this review is for the entire series NOT just this book. Minor spoilers ahead*
I'm finally reviewing one of my all-time favourite reverse harem series!!
Rise of The Iliri follows our FMC Sal, the last of the pale-skinned Iliri race, as she collects mates, kicks butt and changes nations.
This series is spectacular, I have yet to find a series that matches this one in world-building, depth of character, and plot twists. I love each of Sal's mates, they all felt individual to me (despite there being a lot of them), and I enjoyed not only their relationship with Sal but how they interacted with the other characters. I couldn't even pick a favourite, they all offer such different things to Sal. I loved that each of their relationships felt different and yet the author was able to pull them in together towards the end of the series into one network. I will warn however there are 'favourites' within the harem, so if this is something that bothers you keep that in mind! I didn't feel that this necessarily detracted from the other members of the harem however.
The storyline kept me pulled in throughout the series despite being so long, with plenty of violence and suspense juxtaposed with loving moments and relationship building. I won't spoil the plot but let me say that Sal finds her power with the help of her mates and other allies throughout the series! I loved her growth throughout the series and I felt that the ending was fitting. Be warned though, it was not an easy journey for the characters and there is a good chance the events of this series will leave you in tears! The ending is worth it though, and there is even an extended epilogue (book 11) to round out the series and give us a taste of what was like for Sal and family following the events of the previous books.
All in all, there is a special place in my heart for this series and I've yet to find one that truly measures up to the experience of reading Sal's story. If you're looking for a series that explores modern themes in a high fantasy world with plenty of why-choose love and violence, this series is for you!
As always, check your trigger warnings because this series gets intense!
Sal is facing her hardest push yet. Slave to soldier to sovereign. Leading 3 species combined into a nation at war. She's been given control of the armies of 2 nations and told to shove suspected Terran forces out of a very powerful town. The only problem? It's Merriton. Where she was sold. Where she was a slave. Where her former master still resides. Where she would rather let it all burn than deal with humans who believe owning people isn't just ok, but absolutely the way things should be. But, in order to get to the emperor she has to back him into his corner. That means shoving him out of the CFC. That also means facing her past. Worse, she has to allow others to do the infiltration for her. Delegation is not something this Kaisae does well.
Spoilers ahead. Oh, all holy hell breaks loose. Merriton is a hotbed of intrigue right now. Merchants know only 1 loyalty, and it's to money- not a country. Especially a country that just made their slaves a recognized species, and the ability to leave. Sal is in for a lot of surprises this book. Some more prophecies come to light. She learns a bit about what ayati wants her to do. She meets someone from her past. She sees someone else with new eyes. So. Much. Happens. And all in the space of a week. And Sal's countdown is still ticking. The more powerful she becomes, the more she wins, the closer her war is to being over. And a Kaisae never sees the end of her war.
ROTI is hands down my favorite series. I reread it once a month usually over a week.
This book felt - somewhat meh - to me.
I don't know if it was because this story was less from Sals prospective / following her - and there were more prospectives from / following others this book than the other ones (like about half of the book was following someone else other than Sal). Maybe it was just the setting they were all in (spying and investigating in Merriton) instead of fighting an epic battle or them all in different locations - but to me it was boring.
Some new characters join in, some characters from the shadows/behind the scenes come forward. Yet I felt Sal and her mates fell in the background some, especially after the first third of the book.
Two of the new relationships seemed forced to me - with the dialog of nicknames between two of the characters being cringy.
There were a lot of surprises within this book and the author leaves you to wonder how will this series end in just two / three more books.
Don't get me wrong. I love this series. This was a good addition to the series and added more to it. It just wasn't my favorite book and I thought this book was going to be different than what it was.
In my opinion, this book is the best of the entire series. It’s as if the author is really getting the hang of writing. Most the issues that pulled me out of the stories in the previous books disappeared. For example, the skin colors of humans naturally varied, not just because they mixed with Iliri. The talk of who is superior from the Sal and her crew was minimum. Instead they focused on the strengths and integration. It’s finally embraced the reverse harem and erotica the description promised. There are more examples but overall I like the changes.
As far as the story went, this one was exciting. It captured my attention in a way the previous books haven’t. It was full of action and suspense. Since the author boldly killed off Blaec several books ago, i wasn’t sure who would survive this encounter. My hope for the next to books is the author keeps me guessing and doesn’t make the main characters invincible. I don’t mind a tearjerker here and there. It makes a story more believable.
