The author of over 80 books in a little over a decade of writing, Dan Gutman has written on topics from computers to baseball. Beginning his freelance career as a nonfiction author dealing mostly with sports for adults and young readers, Gutman has concentrated on juvenile fiction since 1995. His most popular titles include the time-travel sports book Honus and Me and its sequels, and a clutch of baseball books, including The Green Monster from Left Field. From hopeful and very youthful presidential candidates to stunt men, nothing is off limits in Gutman's fertile imagination. As he noted on his author Web site, since writing his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, in 1994, he has been hooked on fiction. "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a WORLD."

Gutman was born in New York City in 1955, but moved to Newark, New Jersey the following year and spent his youth there.

When a teacher announces, "There will be a sustitute teacher..," you never know what a day in class will bring. There are teachers who can be fun, strict, those who are a bit out of the ordinary. A boy named A.J. and his classmates are in for a treat, when they find out their teacher will be out for a week. The teacher, named Miss Porter, is a Personal Digital Assistant who is a computer!!! Having a computer for teacher was actually quite a blast, since Miss Porter knew everything, inculding how to deliver a pizza via drone! But what hapens when, "...the weirdest thing in the history of the world happened. But I'm not going to tell you what it is." You will have to read this story, to find out!

This text has comedy, mixed with a bit of context that would work best for grades 1-5. I would recommend using this text to compare and contrast with the topic of subsitute teachers. This can also spark a writing piece for opinions on technology and how it influences society. In the text, it was humorous to have a bit of reality kick in when the principal explained to the students why they had a computer for a teacher. He said, "I'll tell you why I didn't have a regular human teacher...because human teachers have to be paid. We don't have money in the budget..."

I originally checked this book out for my daughter as per her “Book a Day” challenge. It is clearly too advanced for her (she’s not yet 2) but she enjoyed reading along by repeating some of the words and phrases (before falling asleep). Well after she was asleep, I was hooked on Miss Porter and had to see the story through! Great read!

Miss Porter is a a substitute teacher, but she's also a hologram. She can turn into a cloud, speak 7 different languages, and hear every place that has Wifi. At the end, Andrea and AJ jam the system and Miss Porter no longer works.

Book-fair-crazy-amount-of reading week is here! I have known the Gutman series was popular, but we read it out loud today and all of my second grade workshop was completely engaged. Great job

Miss Porter Is Out Of Order by Dan Gutman. Aj's teacher is not at school so they think they are getting a sub but they get a personal robot assistant that was great in the beginning by ordering them pizza, telling jokes, and doing fun stuff. The next day Miss Porter changed, she made them do math, reading, writing, and other school stuff. The kids had enough of it though, so they talked about a play at recess but it got discovered because of Miss Porter's super-hearing and super-sight. Aj new that he could not speak to anyone because she would hear it, so he did it himself. he destroyed the personal robot but then, a drone flew threw the window and said you can't destroy me, Aj. During class the next day Andrea asked to go to the bathroom which Aj thought was odd because she never goes to the bathroom. As she walked by she dropped a note on Aj's desk without Miss Porter noticing and it read "meet me in the hallway. Aj waited a minute so Miss Poreter did not suspect anything and then they met in the hallway and she took him to the computer room. They hacked into Miss Porter's hard drive and as she was going to do it Miss Porter walked in and told her not to press it. But before she could stop her Andrea pressed it and Miss Porter started glitching and speaking gibberish. Dr. Carbles walked in and fired her form speaking weird. I can connect to the theme because I once had a dream of robots taking over the whole world. I rate this book a 5 star because it is very interesting. I would recommend this book to people who hate robots because they destroy the robot!

I got a few of these books to listen to while running the Monterey Half Marathon, figuring nice light-hearted easy-to-hear books would be better than some World War II tragic lovefest involving a missing horse and legacy china. And I was right. This book and the following one in the series were perfect.

I don't know if it was fatigue but every time AJ was like, "Who walked through the door?" I was thinking, "Oh, who will it be?" And then AJ would say, "Nobody! Cause people can't walk through doors." And I'd be like "D'oh!" I'm not even kidding; I fell for it every time and it happens like four times. I'm in my 40s.

This is Book 2 of actually the third Series of MY WEIRD SCHOOL books for middle graders by author Dan Gutman, illustrated by Jim Paillot. I found it hilarious and plan to read all three series. These kids are likable, ornery, adventurous, as well as determined and creative, despite the adults in their lives. Here they take on Artificial Intelligence [yes, really] as their miserly Superintendent replaces a vacationing teacher....with a "personal digital assistant." [Think Amazon's Echo.] Wow! A teacher with access to the world's knowledge, no need to sleep or eat, never ill. However, also inescapable, wherever there's a Wi-Fi connection, and always "in the cloud." So this becomes an actual adversarial situation with a virtually implacable foe [intentional pun]. With wry humor and a keen understanding of the characteristics of this age group, Dan Gutman delivers a well-plotted, exciting, adventure.
