“Iguana Boy vs. The 30 Second Thief” is the second book in the series. No knowledge of the first is required and this story is entirely standalone.

The opening paragraph has a dream where “a unicorn flies past riding on the back of a vacuum cleaner and says hello to you in Spanish – ‘HOLA!’” (and comes complete with cartoon illustration of said unicorn too). This is a good introduction to the book as it gives you an idea of what to expect from the get-go – silliness.

The book follows Dylan who is IGUANA BOY. His superpower is talking to iguanas, four of which – Paul, Crazy Red-Eye Paul, Smelly Paul and Pauline (“it’s a very popular name for an iguana”) – accompany him on his adventures.

In the last book Iguana Boy saved the world. “His prize for saving the world was to be welcomed into the Superhero Collective, the neatest organisation ever, which aimed to bring all superheroes together for one common goal: to use their superpowers for the benefit of mankind.” This time he is going to the Superhero HQ for the first time where he gets given “the world’s smallest office”. Anyway he has a lot to prove and one way he can do that is by taking down the 30 second thief, aka the Repeat Offender, who robs bank after bank always taking just five pounds whilst foiling the police and the superheroes. “The supercool supervillain once more managed to avoid detection, making off with a single five-pound note. Man, that must really irritate those guys and gals over at Superhero HQ!”

The story is good, there are plenty of illustrations along the way too making it an easy and engaging read. The comic strip pages which outlined the bank robberies were a little confusing for me as it was hard to follow the flow of the story through them but apart from that I liked this book.

If you enjoy this book then you may also like “Danny Dread” by Ben Davis, a book about a boy born into a supervillain family and who is expected to continue the family tradition but who wants to be a superhero instead. (I was put in mind of this book when reading this one.)
