Viola Preston loves exploring abandoned places with her friends and looking for ghosts. But when they break into an abandoned asylum, they get more than they could have hoped for, human ashes. It turns out, the ghosts they had been looking for were real? It sure looks that way as they all start seeing the dead. And the dead are looking back. Can Viola figure out what’s going on before they become ghosts themselves, and still be a normal highschooler?
This is quite unlike anything I've read in awhile. I just finished reading and am still stunned by the ending! The story is told through main character Viola's eyes and distinctive voice, which was a little difficult to absorb at first - I was hooked by the start of chapter 2 though. The fast paced, at times sarcasm fuelled energy scattered throughout is a little jarring at times, but a reread helps with focus and clarity and I promise this story is well worth the effort. 5 stars for a compelling plot, divine characters that I just want to squish, especially Jacob and Darrick, and great storytelling at its heart.
This was so much more than a horror novel. Not only did ‘Ash’ provide for a good horror read but it allowed for a look into the lives of modern day teenagers. The author did a great job of giving the 2 main characters their voices. You will either love or hate them, or in my case a love hate relationship. I found, unlike most books of the horror genre, it was not predictable. I was never quite sure where the author was going to take me next. Reader beware, the author does not shy away from the macabre.
This story captured me from the beginning. Of course it's always a bad idea to sneak into these haunted places but the curiosity keeps you reading. The characters were so relatable dispute the supernatural happening around them. They went to school, played games, got grounded, and had relationship bumps. The realism was so emersive and the creepiness keeps the pages turning The main character has such a strong voice! The author spared no expense on the gorey details. And the ending! O.M.G.!
I really enjoyed this combination YA/Horror novel. The main character, Viola, is very likeable and her side comments often made me smile. Her relationships with the other characters are all believable and entertaining. The author does a good job of bringing out individual personalities in all of the side characters.
The horror aspect is well done, particularly at the beginning, when Viola and her friends explore a vacant asylum. I feel that the attempts to ramp up the dread/fear later in the novel do become a bit repetitive. I think it would have been nice if there were more of a backstory related to the 'ghost/apparitions' written into the novel.
Over-all the plot is good, and the ending is perfect.
