She’s Country Strong is the second book in Heatherly Bell’s, “Wilder Sisters” series. This series is about three sisters who were country music stars until they had to disband due to a scandal caused by the behavior of the youngest sister, Sabrina. Afterwards, the sisters returned home to Whistle Cove, California to run their family owned and run hotel.
This is Sabrina’s story. Damien, D.C. Caldwell is a “celebrity image fixer.” Lexi, Sabrina’s sister, whose story is told in the first book, has hired D.C. to help Sabrina return to the country music scene since that is the only life she has ever known.
Unfortunately Sabrina is still devastated by the shame, guilt and nasty media comments she received as a result of her behavior. She is also bitter and angry at herself for trusting the wrong person. She only wants to stay in Whistle Cove and continue to hide from anyone who may recognize her.
D.C. on the other hand has had his own shameful experience in his past and has chosen a career to help others who have, also, felt repercussions from some disgraceful behavior. However, this is his last assignment. He plans to move to Texas and fulfill his dream of buying a ranch.
Obviously, both characters are imperfect and come with lots of baggage. They are also stubborn, unyielding and determined to have their own way. In fact, they are so alike, that they find it almost impossible to get along. Plus, their smoking hot attraction for each other doesn’t encourage friendship.
Ms. Bell is a very skilled writer. Sabrina and D.C. are not always sympathetic, but she never lets them become hateful. Somehow, we readers always feel the integrity and tenderness that underlies their gruff exteriors. In fact, the characters’ feelings and attitudes so gradually soften toward each other that the reader isn’t always aware that is happening.
I enjoyed reading Sabrina’s story, and I am looking forward to reading about Jessie, the last of the three sisters.
