Stephen Joshua Sondheim was an American musical and film composer and lyricist, winner of an Academy Award, multiple Tony Awards (seven, more than any other composer), multiple Grammy Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize. He has been described as the Titan of the American Musical.
His most famous scores include (as composer/lyricist) A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins, as well as the lyrics for West Side Story and Gypsy. He was president of the Dramatists Guild from 1973 to 1981.
Zia (my 1 year old daughter) and I ended our summer musical listening with this Sondheim book I bought back in 2006 for the "Invocation and Instructions to the Audience" from THE FROGS, but I had always suspected that there were more little gems inside; I just never explored it. We've been listening to a song a day since July; we listen to four different versions, if there are that many. A couple of gems we found were "Silly People" and "So Many People" from MARRY ME A LITTLE, and "Isn't It?" from YOU'RE GONNA LOVE TOMORROW. I do this with Zia to expose her to different genres of music, and the other added bonus is that I can find new music for my students. However, during this go around, I found music that I think I will use for my own repertoire.
