Rate this book
What happens when journalists go undercover to investigate a sex club linked to the murder of their employer, and they discover that one of their mothers may have ties to it? SUNDAY BEST, an engaging comic mystery by Ann Lineberger, explores the lengths people will go to indulge their fantasies while preserving their secrets.

When publishing mogul Walter Bloom is grotesquely murdered in the postcard-perfect Connecticut town of Longshore, his brother and business partner, Charles, is determined to discover who is responsible. Walter had a public history of sexual harassment and a private involvement with sex clubs. Charles is convinced Walter's murder is related. He enlists the help of his employees--sisters Lauren Mark and Brooke Edwards, Jackie Hunt, and Darren Nottingham--to infiltrate the Swingers' groups Walter favored. Together they discover a comically warped and perverse subculture that is eerily connected to the alternative Unify church that Lauren and Brooke's clairvoyant mother founded in their youth.

Laced with humor and biting social commentary, SUNDAY BEST is an inventive and absorbing novel that offers a satirical glance into the world of sex clubs, alternative religions, and clairvoyants as a study of the selling of hope in contemporary America.

Fans of Liane Moriarty's Big Little Lies and Gillian Flynn's Sharp Objects will find an intriguing mystery that combines female-driven detective work, tantalizing behind closed-door reveals, and the exploration of female aggression uniquely balanced by a cast of endearingly flawed characters and mystical escapades and near misses that will resonate with fans of Daryl Gregory's Spoonbenders.

Filled with memorable characters--A #MeToo victimizer; a steadfast brother; a '70s guru; a modern-day clairvoyant; a self-absorbed mother; a power-hungry tambourinist, a misguided cast of misfits, and an insightful take on the importance of authenticity--in SUNDAY BEST, Lineberger has deftly weaved a compelling story that touches on one inescapable truth: Contentment.

4 Stars!

His behavior grew more reckless, and his womanizing seeped into the workplace. His list of enemies grew by leaps and bounds.

Walter is a publishing mogul and one day he is murdered in a quaint little town in Connecticut. Walter isn't so innocent though. He has a past where he's done some questionable things. His brother, Charles, is convinced that since his brother was involved with sex clubs and other dangerous activities that his murder must be related.

As the investigation goes on, Charles discovers more than he could imagined. He really gets the behind the scenes feel of this different culture that may be tied their family beyond what his brother was involved in..

This is such a fun mystery novel! I enjoyed the story and it was pretty engrossing. The beginning of the book comes out with a bang and you will be instantly hooked from the start! As long as you can handle some risque subjects, then I think that you will enjoy this novel! I've never read an Ann Lineberger novel before but I will definitely look to read more of her work!

Thanks to the author, Ann lineberger and suzyapprovedbooktours for my copy of this book!

Throw in some wild characters, sex clubs and a culty church and you’ve got Sunday Best by @ann.lineberger.author - thanks to @suzyapprovedbooktours for providing me a copy to review on this tour! ⁣

Charles Bloom is found murdered in the aforementioned way and his brother Walter takes a dip into his seedy past in attempt to find his killer. What ensues is a deep dive into the underworld of swingers, sex clubs and the Unity Church tied together for one wild ride!⁣

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this one based on the synopsis but I loved it! It’s a quick read! The writing is easy and pulls you in from the very first page. If you like satirical comedy that pokes at often taboo subjects - you’ll love this one just as much as I did! // ☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️

Sunday Best is a captivating book that it hard to pigeonhole! It's a murder mystery, it's a satire, it's humorous--all adding up to one heck of a great story! The characters in this book are offbeat and dysfunctional, each of them adding their own flair to the novel. The elements in this book are so surprising and add to its entertainment value; sex clubs, an alternative church, clairvoyants and secrets! This is a fast-paced book that will keep you engaged from beginning to end. Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book to read.

Lindas Book Obsession Reviews “Sunday Best” by Ann Lineberger

Ann Lineberger, Author of “Sunday Best” has written a unique, intriguing, intense, captivating, suspenseful and entertaining novel. The Genres for this novel are Fiction, Mystery and Suspense, Satire, and Dark Humor. The timeline for this story takes place in the present and past when it pertains to the characters or events in this story. The author’s unusual, dysfunctional and quirky characters are described as complex and complicated.

Charles Bloom gets his staff, and detectives together to find out who murdered his brother Walter. The only things Walter seemed to love were food and sex clubs. Charles has his journalists investigate the variety of sex clubs that Walter did frequent. His murder seems to remind the community of a young woman killed in the same manner twenty-eight years before. Lauren Marks and Brooke Edwards, are sisters that work for Charles and are used to unusual activity. Their mother was a founder of a Unity Church and also claimed to be a clairvoyant. Now she is a famous clairvoyant, with all kinds of crystals being sold on QVC.

What do the Unity Church and sex clubs have in common? Why do clues keep leading to the same people? The author seems to be making a statement through her wit, and satire. I appreciate that the author writes about the greed, jealousy, aggression and unhappiness of the characters. This is a thought-provoking novel that makes you thing about what should provide happiness, love, and hope. I would recommend this novel for those readers who entire satire and mystery.

How much do you REALLY know about your neighbors? The young spiritual renters down the street? The adorable senior couple that’s lived next door for decades? The weird single dude across the street?

What if you found out that a large part of your town was involved in an underground sex culture and half the people you know were dirty, naughty sex addicts? I personally, think it would be quite amusing. All you need is a grisly, bizarre murder where the victim has his penis sliced off and ALL the secrets come out!

Walter Bloom has been murdered. The way his body is mutilated and displayed suggests something dark and freakish is going on. The publishing executive is known for his dirty ways and infatuation with sex and secret fetish clubs - it’s no mystery there - but his brother Charles is determined to find his killer. He enlists 4 of his journalist employees, Darren and Jackie - to pose as swingers and infiltrate some clubs for answers, and local sisters Lauren and Brooke, along with local authorities - an investigation ensues.

Perverted and twisted secrets start to emerge about not only Walter, but several people they know from town, including Lauren and Brooke's own mother - an obnoxious clairvoyant and overall terrible parent, her associate, and several members of the alternative church they’ve founded.

I found this to be a really fun, and strange, murder mystery. Some parts I cringed with curiosity, others I literally laughed out loud. A bit of Big Little Lies, mixed with an Agatha Christie style murder investigation - oh and throw in some Fifty Shades - and you’ve got a fantastic book on your hands.

Sunday Best was chock full of ridiculous escapades, colorful characters and a really compelling storyline.

Five Best Reasons About Sunday Best:

1. It is like a Hallmark movie, but with swingers and a sex scandal! For those of you that love Hallmark movies, 🙋‍♀️ this novel reads like one. It’s drama-driven with some great dialogue and character plot twists. I had such a great mental movie happening in my head as I read.

2. There are sub-stories that are so varying in context that it keeps things interesting. You know how sometimes when you read a book with chapters that alternate sub-stories, and there’s a really boring one so you want to skip ahead- this wasn’t like that. I liked each storyline equally, and I loved the final tie-ins.

3. There is a cult twist- I love cults.

4. It was light enough to make me laugh, suspenseful enough to make me turn the pages, and fast enough that I finished in a day and a half.

5. I ended this fun, suspenseful, fiction feeling a little more educated. Granted, it was educated on swingers nation (I seriously had no idea this was like a real live thing 😳) but educated nonetheless. I love that.

Sunday Best is as unique of a novel as I have ever read, and I enjoyed every minute of it.
This novel will not be held down by a genre, and that makes me so happy. If I had to choose, I would say it covers Mystery, Suspense, Satire, and DEFINITELY humor albeit on the dark side.

The time span alternates from past to present. The characters are not only complex and well crafted, they are hilariously dysfunctional which makes them utterly relateable.

The story focuses on Charles Bloom who is trying to solve who killed his food and sex loving brother Walter.

This novel took me places that I didn't know I wanted to go, like sex clubs, ha !

The theme of greed in this novel is one in which will garner up some great discussions as to if material things can make us happy.

I really enjoyed this story and how different it was. I highly recommend this novel to all readers that enjoy many different types of genres.

This is quite a brew! Take two murders, a religious cult, and sex clubs, and stir with rich suburbanites, designer shopping and real estate, and you have Ann Lineberger’s page-turner of a book. And it all takes place in a coastal Connecticut town called Longshore. I live near that town (I think) and have hardly dared set foot in it ever since I read the book.
You have been warned. Those preppy people from the Nutmeg state, are not as innocent as they look...

Sunday Best by Ann Lineberger brings together a lively cast of characters in a multifaceted story of murder, dysfunction, and a little flirtatious workplace romance. The perfect mix of down to earth investigators and journalists with outlandishly eccentric wealthy swingers and hipster dysfunctional church goers!
At the forefront of this story is a cringe worthy murder mystery. Walter Bloom’s seedy past has caught up with him in the worst way and the small quiet town of Longshore, Connecticut is full of secrets. His brother Charles is determined to solve the murder but doesn’t believe the local police are up to the challenge of solving the case. Swingers, sex clubs and secrets in the suburbs make for a bizarrely comical work of fiction that after reading you might be inclined to say “sometimes you just can’t make this stuff up”!

* I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for my fair and honest review.*

*Warning*- Adult Content.

Sunday Best is an incredibly entertaining and smart murder mystery. Think Agatha Christie with a side of some serious kink! Author Anne Lineberger creates a plot full of suspense, dark humor, murder, secrets, sex, fun characters, and a cult. So basically a story that could easily be covered on Dateline or 48 Hours. Interested yet? You should be! I couldn't put this book down!

Sunday Best takes place in the picture perfect town of Longshore, CT. Publishing mogul Walter Bloom has just been murdered, and his brother Charles is determined to find the culprit. Walter had a very public history of sexual harassment and frequented sex clubs. Charles is convinced Walters involvement with the sex clubs and his murder are related and enlists the help of his unqualified employees to investigate. Sisters Lauren and Brooke, Jackie Hunt, and Darren Nottingham are the journalists charged with the job of infiltrating the swinger's groups Walter favored. Together, they discover a comically warped and perverse subculture in their town that seems to have an eerie connection to the alternative church that Lauren and Brooke's mother founded in their youth.

Wow! I don't even know where to begin! You all need to read this book! It's fantastic! The characters were well developed- quirky and dysfunctional, which made them all the more interesting. They were complicated and complex, very human, and very relatable. The dialogue was great! The banter between the main characters was a riot at times, but that was also due to the subject matter and the precarious situations they found themselves in.
That subject matter- sex clubs and the counter culture of that sort. A lot of people, including myself, are not very familiar with these types of clubs, but the author does a excellent job at letting the reader in on people's dirty little secrets, pulling the curtain back to reveal a glimpse of the sexual underground.
There is plenty of suspense, plus a few mysterious subplots, that will keep the reader turning the pages at a rapid rate. But make no mistake, as there is humor, this is also a dark tale of how far people will go to keep their secrets hidden. The humor is evenly, and well placed throughout the story to lighten things up when the plot is getting a bit too dark.

Anne Lineberger hits the ball out of the park with Sunday Best. This satire-like story of vices, crime, and religion will keep the reader completely engrossed, while the colorful cast, especially the journalists will make you laugh out loud with the shenanigans they find themselves in. This is a fun, well written, murder mystery. I cannot recommend it enough!

Sunday’s Best

I had difficulty reading this due to the format it was sent in. I had to increase each page individually as the font was so small. I won’t let this interfere with my rating. I received a complimentary copy from Voracious Readers for an unbiased review.

The synopsis intrigued me so I requested a copy. The story idea was fresh if a little far fetched but made for interesting reading. Delving into the world of swingers, sex clubs and fetiches. The description were well done so that the readers could visualize the scene.

There were a few off putting moments such as calling a dating site Dolly Madison when everyone knows it was Ashley Madison. To avoid legal issues and disappointing the reader it could have just been referred to as ‘that hookup site for married people that had a security breach ‘.

Some extra editing will help as well. As a Canadian I am well aware that my current Prime Minister is JUSTIN Trudeau not Justine Trudeau as was stated in the book.

Other than that it was an interesting read into the darker side of adult sex play.
I give it 3 stars.

This book was pretty great for 5 reasons...

1. Who doesn’t like a suspenseful, intriguing novel about religious cults, sex clubs and murders?

2. It had me turning the pages so quickly because there was so much happening and who doesn’t want to keep reading to find out what in the world is going to happen?

3. There were weird and very lively comical characters with tons of secrets which made for a bizarre turn of events that takes place in Connecticut.

4. It pulls you in immediately and keeps its pace throughout the entire book.

5. Ann’s writing style is phenomenal with such great detail it makes you feel as if you right there and can visualize everything you read...who doesn’t love that?

With a little bit of satire and mystery, this book makes for a must read that keeps you entertained!

I definitely recommend to those who like all the above, it was unexpected and loved every moment of it. I didn’t want it to end. 🙌🙌

When Walter Bloom is murdered his brother Charles is determined to to find his killer. When a book starts with a murder it's not that unusual for me. When the murder involves a man's penis being cut off that makes it slightly more unusual. When you add in sex clubs and a church it all just gets more interesting.

Ann Lineberger pulled me into this world of swingers ( that sounded better in my head) and now I can't help but wonder what my neighbours get up to in private! I can't decide how to label this book as it has so many elements! Murder mystery, satire and fun all make up this book and if you like any of those elements you will enjoy this!

Thank you Ann for the copy and asking me to review.

I got this book for frank review from the author. Truthfully I found it hard going; the story line did not flow for me, I did not gel with the characters and found some of the characters irritating. I would usually finish a book of this genre in one sitting but this took me over a week to read because I could not get into it. I found the format I received it in irritating with words split between two sentences and other grammatical errors, so maybe it was just due to that I found it hard going. Two murders, one historical one recent, amateur detectives, sex clubs and weird fake psychics; if you love this theme you will probably enjoy the book. Other reviewers seemed to love it but it isn't for me.

Sunday Best is a captivating story of Charles and how he works with his employees to find out why his brother Walter was murdered. Walters history of being involved in swingers clubs, sex clubs and the unity church.

As they dive deeper into Charles life they discover more and more secrets that could have led to his death.

If you are a fan of mysteries and crime novels then I would recommend you pick this one up!

Being from “Longshore”, I was looking forward to the guilty pleasure of curling up with a cup of coffee and devouring a fun, satirical romp poking fun at the over the top lifestyles prevalent in Fairfield County’s Gold Coast communities. Two murders decades apart, a hippy dippy church, clairvoyants, swingers and sex clubs in a community that personifies the term “entitlement”-sounds like the perfect accompaniment for a Sunday afternoon. Sunday Best, unfortunately, misses the mark. I expected witty, laugh out loud, dark social critique with sparkling dialogue embedded in a satirically outrageous story line. The story line was outrageous, and while there were brief moments of levity, the character development and dialogue fell flat. The poor editing and proofreading, while playing a minor role in my overall rating, was distracting and annoying. My 2 star rating is a generous-if I was not a resident of “Longshore” I probably would have given it a 1.

I didn’t realize how a murder mystery could be somewhat comical and informative until I read this book by Ann Lineberger. Sunday Best brings you into a satirical murder mystery intertwined with sex clubs and religion. How interesting is that?

I found the book to be fascinating because you learn about such a world existing along with an all-female detective team which I thought was fabulous. There are definite Big Little Lies Vibes here which I thought added a special touch. There are definite memorable characters spiked with humor, satire, and a look into the world of alternative religions and sex clubs.

Thank you @suzyapprovedbooktours for introducing me to such a vividly written book that I could not put down. Ann’s writing is so vivid, I laughed & was engaged and such a timeless murder mystery.
