This novel started with promise, I wanted to know what happened with Joy's and Edward's marriage. It seemed very romantic that they were engaged after meeting just once.

However the novel focuses on Sabine, Joy's sulky grand-daughter, whose has been exiled to Ireland by her self-centered mother. You should feel sympathy for Sabine, but I couldn't.

I had to force my-self to finish this novel. If this was the first novel I had read by Jojo Moyes it would have been the last. Me Before You has redeemed Jojo Moyes for me.

2.5 stars (at the most).

This book was totally fine, just fine. Not an awful lot happens and its very slow. You can tell its a debut novel, I much prefer her latest stuff to be honest.

Some novels are flashy, bold and obvious. The characters rush to the forefront, the plot unfolds quickly, laying down the story in such a way that the reader is satisfied with little effort or attention on their part. I often enjoy books like that, romances and dramas, fluffy and formulaic... Books like that are easy. They are entertaining, and they certainly have their place.

"Sheltering Rain," as it turns out, does not fall into the above category of fiction. It is not flashy. It is not easy, and some readers, might even say that it is boring. The plot is delivered by drips and drabs, moving us both forward and back into the past at a slow pace, perhaps, at times, too slow. For the reader that will be patient with the author, however, you will find that it is a beautiful work of prose, richly developed, and with characters of depth, each of whom are beautifully flawed (as only any real person would be).

"Sheltering Rain" is not a Romance, not in my estimation, anyway, but, as it turns out, it is a LOVE STORY, a love story of the truest sort. It is a love story of a family, of mothers and daughters, of failed love and love that lasted the test of time. Its a story to teach us about the illusion of "perfect" that we believe we see in others, and a story about finding perfection amongst the broken reality of family life.

I sought to read "Sheltering Rain" because of my appreciation of Jojo Moyes' writing. I have recently been reading her books, and have found that I love her writing style, her way of developing her characters and her story lines. I love the subtlety of her writing, the lack of glitzy gimmicks, and how, despite their absence, her novels always leave me feeling enriched and opened up. Of the books I've read of hers, "Sheltering Rain" most reminds me of "Ship of Brides," both for the way in which the plot weaves together past and present, time spent on board a ship, and the breadth of characters involved in the telling of her story. Although "Sheltering Rain" is my least favorite of all the Jojo Moyes novels I've yet read, I enjoyed it greatly, appreciating it as a complement to the totality of Ms. Moyes repertoire. I would recommend it to any reader who is an appreciator of Moyes already and who would like to read her older work.

I look forward to reading more from Ms. Moyes and meeting more of her beautiful characters!

Amazing, very emotional, I loved the characterisation and I really felt for everyone. Cried several times, even at happy bits, also got goosebumps and thought one of the leading men was verrrrrryy sexy.....
This is the third book of her's I've read in a month and I think Jojo Moyes might be my new favourite author.....

Definitely not JoJo Moyes best work. This book was really hard to get in to as it just constantly jumped around. It felt like a lot of effort reading it. The story definitely improved in the last quarter, however the ending was rather disappointing it felt like a last minute ending just to finish it off.
Disappointed overall as I normally enjoy her work.

I have become a huge fan of Jojo Moyes work ever since reading her fantastic novel Me Before You and have made it my mission to read her back catalogue. This is why I was particularly excited to read her debut novel Sheltering Rain which was first published in 2002. This is a novel about three generations of women – Joy who spent many of her formative years in Hong Kong in the 1950′s which is also where she met and married her soldier husband Edward. They had perhaps what could be called a whirlwind romance with Edward proposing within days of meeting Joy and marrying her when he next returned to the country. Their marriage appears to be idyllic especially when Joy compares her life to that of her friends, and to be honest I’m not a big believer or fan of what they now call “insta-love,” so I was a teeny bit sceptical of their entire relationship. However, I should not have doubted the author, as years later certain events are uncovered that show the darker side of their marriage, proving that nothing can always be perfect.

In the modern day setting, Joy and Edward own a successful horse farm in Kilcarrion, Ireland. They have a daughter Kate who is estranged from them and ran away from Ireland to London at a young age to escape the tensions and problems in the household. Kate also has a daughter called Sabine and history seems to be repeating itself as their relationship as mother/daughter is also quite fraught. Kate does not have the best luck romantically, and Sabine is getting a bit fed up with a succession of relationships that bring a father figure into her life for it to not work out and them being removed from her life. When Joy calls Kate from Ireland to tell her that her father Edward is very ill, Kate jumps at the chance for Sabine to go to the farm and get to know her grandmother and grandfather properly, whilst also giving her a break from Kate’s latest romantic disaster.

Sabine hates Ireland. She hates the farm and horses, and finds her iron-willed grandmother Joy very difficult to get to know, understand and get on with. Sabine also finds it very difficult to communicate with her old grandfather, misses all her friends and life in London and is still bitter and exasperated with her mother. Over time however, as we learn about all three generations of women and understand them all a bit better, the fragile relationships between the three appear to be slowly mending themselves. Before that happens there is still a lot of heart-ache to go through for all three, secrets to be unearthed and bridges to be built.

One of the things I loved about this book as with many of the authors novels is that you get a perspective from all three lead characters and a switch in time-lines from the past to the present day. This is such an effective tool in getting to know the characters as a reader and provides explanations for things that have happened which make them the person they are in modern times. I think I loved and got irritated by all three women in equal measures due to the consequences of certain actions in their pasts but I think one of the signs of a good story is that the characters should bring out some raw emotion in the reader. By the end of the novel, we have seen a change in Joy, Kate and Sabine for the better due to their experiences, but I also enjoyed that the author did not try and sugar-coat their lives in that it will be a “happy ever after” for them all, and that there would still be challenges ahead.

I chose this book for my 2014 Book Bingo challenge, for the square "the first book of a favorite author". I've read quite a few novels by Moyes and I loved "Me Before You" so she comes as close to a favorite author as anyone else does.

Kate's going through a bit of a rough patch and decides to send her sixteen year old daughter, Sabine, to stay with her parents in Ireland while she sorts things out. Her mother and father, Joy and Edward, take Sabine into their home despite the fact that their relationship with Kate has been very strained for many years.

I liked all of the characters in this book and would have enjoyed spending more time with them. I especially would have liked reading more about Joy and Edward's life when they were first married and living in Hong Kong. That portion of the book reminded me of 'The Painted Veil' by M Somerset Maugham.

This book focuses on relationships, expectations and perceptions. It's character driven rather than plot driven, it has some surprises, though they're all domestic ones. I enjoyed the supporting characters and the backdrop of the farm, the horses and the fox hunt. Moyes is easy to read and this book was no exception.

I did find the character Kate a bit less charming than the others, she feels a little too sorry for herself and is less than decisive when making important life choices. There is a thread of romance in her life and I was a little annoyed with her lack of maturity in figuring it all out.

Overall this was enjoyable and easy to read, good for summer reading. Still worth a look if you enjoy Jojo Moyes but not as wonderful as the author's later books.

"You can't expect everything to be perfect. When you expect too much, you can be disappointed, believe me."

Sheltering Rain is the debut novel of Jojo Moyes. I wasn’t that surprised when I noticed that the Jojo mojo had already been there all along. This author comforts me as reader. I feel cocooned whenever I read one of her books. Does it make any sense when you feel that the book is giving you a virtual hug? It's like comfort food for the mind. Be it predictable and ordinary sometimes, that doesn’t diminish the capable and touching storytelling. The characters are extremely realistic as if it’s mandatory to feel some sort of affinity to some of them with all their shortcomings and internal struggles.

Some of my Jojos

This book follows three generations of women; (1) a sulky teenager (Sabine), (2) a clueless mother (Kate), and (3) a tough-outside-soft-inside grandmother (Joy). The story kicks off with memories of Joy as a young expat in Hong Kong, then shifts to present tense when Kate sends the unwilling Sabine to spend sometime with her barely seen grandparents in Ireland while she tries to sort out her messed up life in London. I was more interested in Joy’s life and wanted to know more about it, particularly the history bits.

Now let’s set that aside. I couldn’t understand why make Sabine go too far with Thom who shares history with her mother. I get that she resented the prospect of a relationship between him and her mom, and a 16 year-old who might have daddy issues is inevitable to crush on older men that are old enough to father her, but that seduction scene? It was awkward, disgusting, and so unnecessary. Also..

Other than the previous paragraph, it’s a lovely book. There is dealing with grief, dysfunctional families, irritated-teenager-package, life with horses, a laugh or two, some secrets, and levels of love.

No he entendido el final 🙄🙄. Literalmente.

I chose this novel as a ready-made fan of Jojo Moyes' work - and I was aware of this being an early work. Perhaps I was über-aware but I do think it shows, which of course makes me reflect upon my first and second novels and how to avoid the tell-tale signs. What was it I didn't like so much? Difficult to pinpoint but there was a faint thread of over-egging and trying a little too hard. That said, I enjoyed the characters and kept reading as much out of respect for the author as out of a desire to see when and if the story would lift and run away with me. Sadly, it never quite did. I am nevertheless pleased to have spent time with it and it will have its place on my shelf with Ms Moyes' other works, which I consider compulsive reading!

A real love that survived the slings and arrows of fate that soared, like some kind of 1950's Romeo and Juliet, above the petty and mundane. The kind of love you read about in books, that inspired songs, that lifted you like a bird yet stood solid, like a monolith, vast, all-encompassing, enduring. . .

Sheltering Rain is deeply moving and yet unnervingly depressing. It makes me feel depressed anyway even if it's not depressing. I love Jojo Moyes but this is not one of her best. Let me clarify things first, I didn't love the book as much as I'd loved her other novels, though I had a great time reading it and to say that I cried when the story ended is overrated. But somewhere deep in my heart I couldn't deny the fact that I feel sad, a trifle breathless with it all when the last sentence had been delivered.

As I sifted through the pages I felt nostalgic like I was reading The Ship of Brides again. I was reminded by the sheer force of the sea and its waves, the free-spirited brides aboard in that vessel, sailing in its own language suddenly became vivid and alive in my memory that the whole scene played out in my mind like a black-and-white classic movie.

********

In 1950's, I believe there was free love and then war. Young and beautiful women were arranged or forced, not so much in protest, to marry a man that could be a soldier or an affluent business tycoon but some women were lucky to have met and married a man that they truly loved and Joy was one of them.

Edward and Joy fell in love with each other at first sight (I can sense you cocking a derisive eyebrow here) it was whirlwind romance that nothing and no one could ever stop them from this enormity. They got married eventually and spent their first day as husband and wife by scouring the streets of Cat Market.

She turned to Edward, trying to keep the fury from her voice.
"He's being ridiculous. He's asking for ten times what it's worth just because you're wearing your uniform. Let's move on."

"No," he said. "Just tell me how much. I don't care what it costs today. You're my wife. I want to buy you a present. This present."

If I had been there I would have freeze-frame that moment when Edward was desperately trying to please his wife. I would hold the still photograph against my chest and sigh a thousand times as I revel the comical scene with a slight smile on my face.

********

Joy seems perfect for Edward like Bonnie to Clyde and Scarlett 'O' Hara to Rhett Butler.

I'm happy when two of my favorite characters from the novel that I'm reading will end up with each other and they will soon be engaged and get married but what happens after that? But then marriage isn't always full of roses and soft whispers of love or some royalty kind of fairy tale we often dream. Marriage has its own dark side, too, and I'm not sure if I'm prepared to embrace it just yet.

I wanted to know if things would get better after the emotional upheaval that loomed over them like dark clouds that nearly sent the entire family in the brink of destruction. I wanted to know more.

I can still feel the familiar ache just looking at the cover of Sheltering Rain, it's sheer bliss then it isn't. I can never look at it the same way again without feeling lonely.

I choose this song, Don't Watch Me Dancing by Little Joy, because it brings me back from the first night they met when Joy who was obviously drunk and shy and Edward who was momentarily nonplussed and amused by her beauty.

I want a man to look at me like that, Sabine thought. I want to feel that loved.

Sheltering Rain by Jojo Moyes was a sweet, contemporary read that felt like a slice of life kind of novel.

Now, I can't say this is like a lot of Jojo Moyes' other books, but this is also an older one in her catalogue. This book felt like it lacked a real plot - we just followed the characters and saw some growth. I didn't see the whole point of the book - was it a specific theme? Was it telling us that love isn't always perfect? Was it a story about three generations of women finally communicating with each other? It's hard to tell.

It is a slower read and I felt like I dragged on a bit, but it was a simple read for me so I didn't mind. It jumped around a bit and it didn't feel like those chapters echoed each other. Some books make the chapters somehow line up theme wise or how they are experiencing troubles in similar ways but in different parts of the timeline. This book just hopped around, seemingly for fun or because she could.

Regardless, it was a nice read. Don't read this book as your first Jojo Moyes book. Her newer books have seen a great improvement on her writing skill.

Three out of five stars.

Disappointing. I kept waiting for the story to start, it just seemed like a general background story on a family who had become disjointed, the reasons why we were not really given enough information on.

Without wanting to give anything away, the story behind the photograph is all too easy to guess and no surprise at all really, but again the story never developed. Sabine was your typical teenager, Kate came across as a weak woman who jumped in and out of relationships without a second thought, Joy was a misfit, and Edward, well apart from bits of information when they met you never really found out anything about him (except that he was a typical man of that period!). Other characters in the book never came to anything, in fact, I did wonder why a few of them were mentioned at all.

The only reason I carried on reading was because I'd taken the book on holiday and had nothing else to do that day!

I'm glad it was a Library book and i didn't waste money buying it, (sorry Jojo)

Džojos gyvenimo linija man labai patiko, bet jos pritruko, norėjosi daugiau. Keitė, labai erzinanti veikėja, kuri man visiškai neprilipo.
