Dangerously alluring, this is a story that will immerse you in its world and leave you wanting more!
Fear of the dark is innate in all of us. So, imagine what living your entire life in the dark would do to your life, the lives of the ones you love, the place you live. That is precisely the setting of The Dark Wood, in the land of Noctum, where night is endless and there are plenty of terrors in the woods to fear. Not just the woods, really, as the land’s ruler is equally frightening.
Oppressed and living in fear, the residents of the forest have created their own guard in defiance of law. The Shadow Guard does what it can to protect the people, but there are horrors beyond even their ability to manage. Stella Varden knows this intimately, as the story begins with her losing her brother, Erik, during his duties as a Shadow Guard. Stella, however, isn’t a trembling, shrinking violet set only on finding a husband to protect her, despite the pressure to do so. I was immediately drawn to her due to her independence, strong will, and fierce determination to be true to her own thoughts and desires, even if it puts her in more danger. Her spunk is admirable, to say the least, even (or especially) if it gets her in trouble sometimes.
After her brother’s death, she soon finds herself receiving the attentions of the newest member of the Shadow Guard, Damian Dagnatari, who was with her brother when he was attacked. Damian is handsome, mysterious, and undeniably dangerous, though he seems to have made it his mission to protect Stella. Damian’s intrigue and complexity is deserving of its own story (one I truly hope we get!).
As if that weren’t enough, a strange ball of fire in the sky leads Stella down a whole other path with the equally handsome and mysterious Luc, Damian’s seeming opposite in every way. But beyond the love triangle forming, the secrets both men hold will change her, and the Dark Wood, forever.
The beauty of this story isn’t only in its fantastic world-building and plotline which was interesting and full of twists and surprises. I was equally enthralled by Mann’s mastery of description, phenomenal character development, and her alluring writing style that truly complements the genre and tone of the story. I was left wanting more, and not in the sense that anything was lacking, but because this rich, well-built world sucked me in completely. It was a story I couldn’t wait to finish but was devastated once it was over.
