If you think you know the story of "Peter Pan," think again. Wendy Darling is a disgruntled employee at Lost Boys Clubhouse on planet Neverland and technically involved with Peter Pan, but he's too busy for her and always flirting with Tink. He's also totally immature and refuses to grow up, so that's why she's leaving him. The arrival of James Hook, in search of something Pan stole from him, derails her plans to return to New London when he kidnaps her and takes her aboard the Jolly Roger . As they set off on an adventure that spans the galaxy while evading Admiral Croc, who's on James’s tail, Wendy soon realizes she doesn't need a boy when she can have a man.
Aurelia Skye is the pen name Kit Tunstall uses when writing science fiction romance. It’s simply a way to separate the myriad types of stories she writes so readers know what to expect with each “author.”
This book was really good. It's a sci-fi romance and fairy tale all mixed into an a room story. All of the characters are well written and I thoroughly enjoyed Captain Hook!
Wendy Darling once thought Peter Pan was a charming bad boy, but after eight months of living with him she realizes he is just irresponsible, and immature, she is more than ready to leave Neverland. Captain James Hook was cheated by Pan, he wants what is rightfully his, so he takes Wendy as his captive until he retrieves the information she is carrying. At first Wendy is disgusted by the fact that Pan let her become a captive of the dashing, if not notorious pirate, but she soon finds out that there is more to Hook than meets the eye. Wow, sexy, fun, and sometimes funny characters that eventually right a wrong and fall in love. I think this is an exciting, action packed retelling of a classic. Fantastic book, I loved it!
I am voluntarily leaving an honest and non-incentivized review of this ARC.
The good: The fairy tale retelling is well done. All the characters from the original tale are included in the novel and are creatively used in the plot (bonus point for Admiral Tikta Croc who is a believable villain). Yes, it has a new, more adult, twist but the story keeps the spirit and adventures from its model. It never dwells too long on an issue and keeps the action going. That's one of the reasons I kept on reading until the end.
I, most of the time, liked Captain Hook because, hey, who doesn't like a sexy pirate? Though I admit the cover model helped a lot picturing him in that light rather than imagining the less appealing Disney version.
The bad: The story is very descriptive, telling a lot more than showing. And when we are shown, it is more than once in contradiction with what we were told. For instance, we are told that Wendy wants to break up with Peter Pan because he is so immature. But he never really behaves like an immature person. He behaves like a coward, cheating, conniving low-life with no morals or ethics. I'm pretty sure that no amount of maturity would have made him act otherwise.
Wendy, on the other hand, will be seen several times acting like a spoiled teenage brat around Captain Hook, making me think she was quite young. I was surprised to find out she is supposed to be 26. One example, at the beginning of the book: when she is kidnapped by Captain Hook (a man she found very attractive and hot only seconds before) away from Peter Pan (a guy she intended to leave as soon as possible) and from a planet she couldn't wait to leave behind, Wendy throws a temper tantrum, yells unimpressive threats and insults, and tries to maim a man whose combat skills she had admired only moments ago. While the scene could work as comic relief, it certainly contradicts the depiction of a smart, hard-working, down to earth Wendy the previous chapters presented.
Then there's the romance part. While I had no problem believing in some physical attraction between Hook and Wendy, their interactions were mainly power struggles. So when told they were falling in love with each other, I had a hard time picturing it. Except maybe if I completely mistook Wendy's regular bouts of anger towards Hook and they were, in fact, tender displays of her affection for him... ?
What an adult twist on Peter Pan's story! It is great that Hook gets to be the hero and win the girl and Peter Pan stays the boy who won't grow up, and what a different Tink!
This book was fun to read as we see Wendy tired of her life with Peter and is kidnapped by Captain Hook when the treasure map is attached to her. Along the way, Hook and Wendy become lovers and fall in love.
Along with this romance, we have the drama of Hook trying to find the treasure that Peter stole and also trying to stay out of Croc's way.
In the end, the bad guys get their just punishments and the bad boy captain Hook gets Wendy. Great HEA as they semi-retire from piracy but help out blockaded planets.
I know I'm in the minority here, but I wasn't invested in the story. Hook fell flat for me, there seemed to be no emotional pull. Yes, it's sexy and has its good moments...but it wasn't enough. I think in part, it's because the story was overly descriptive. It's a futuristic universe with all kinds of people/creatures and technology. In an attempt to help us understand the plot, I felt like I was getting an information dump. I will say it is worth giving a try, but I'm not likely to read Hooked again.
This was such a fun SciFi adventure. Nothing like the original tale, except for the names, Wendy and Captain Hook may not meet in the best of circumstances, but an attraction is there. As they get to know one another it is plain both have had misconceptions of each other, in the meantime they have to stay alive to fight another day. In this action packed thrill ride the sweet sexy romance still flows within the story for a delightful read.
This is a fun, sexy "alternate" (and adult) retelling of the Peter Pan fairytale. Wendy finds out Peter is not who she expected. He is in fact childish and immature, and flirts with other women. She decides to leave, gets kidnapped by Captain Hook, and has fun and sexy adventures. I enjoyed this story and look forward to more from this author.

This is a new telling of Peter pan. She is fed up with Peter as he is immature and flirting with tinklebell. She is going to leave. She is taken by hook and now she finds she is looking at him in a different light. Now will this end? See what will happen

I love adult renditions of childhood fairy-tales. In this return to Neverland, roles are reversed. Wendy is one strong woman and Hook....don't get me started on Hook(love him).

A well-written story this is not Hook as he has always been portrayed this is so much better, once started I was not putting this book down. I hope there are to be more books in the Future Fairytales series soon. I will be reading this book again.
This was a fun story. Once I started, I cruised through to the end. I really liked this Hook. I've read other iterations of the Peter Pan story but none where Pan was depicted in quite this light. I read an ARC and volunteered to review this story.
