Unicorn Academy is a boarding school on magical Unicorn Island, where each child gets to be paired with their very own unicorn and they all have lessons (and plenty of adventures) together. Each unicorn is born with their own special magical power and in order to graduate from the Academy at the end of the year, the unicorn has to find their magic and bond with their rider.

These small chapter books are absolutely perfect to read to a younger child and they contain gorgeous illustrations throughout to help younger readers engage even further with the story.

Before reading this book we had only read one other Unicorn Academy story and while it would be best to read these adventures sequentially from the first book, we still managed to find our feet with the happenings from the other books. This however does seem to be a mini finale where characters from the first six books are graduating and an overall plot arc of some of the mysterious happenings from previous books is uncovered, so I would suggest reading the first six books if you can before moving on to any other books in this series.

In this book we follow Olivia, a girl who is keeping a secret from her friends, and her unicorn Snowflake. The book is both full of magic and adventure and lessons for the readers to learn that trust in friendship goes both ways, as well as being accepted for who you are.

As I mentioned, there is a larger plot arc that comes to a head in this book and with that there are also great lessons about greed and power and how appearances may be deceiving.

These are fairly short books - just over 100 pages each and are great for young readers who are interested in horses/unicorns and magic and adventure and again, they are also great for young listeners who will sit for a chapter book with an older reader.

3.5/5

The sixth and final book in this cohort of girls! This one wraps up the cohort's story nicely while setting some things up for the next set. Olivia's dilemma is that she hasn't been entirely truthful to her friends and her unicorn in fear that if she told the truth they would no longer like her. This has led her to have a secret hope that she doesn't graduate, without realizing how much Snowflake really wants to. So her arc is getting support from Snowflake to get the courage to tell the truth and to start putting Snowflake's desires above her own fears.

We kind of get to see all the girls contributing to the story and events in this last book, which is kind of special! There is a grand reveal that is set up from some building suspicions from the last installment, though still there is a bit of a mystery on why exactly the motivations are there and where it will go from here. A bit mustache twirly villan-y at the end, but hey it is a kids series :)

My 4.5 year old daughter did well with this installment and didn't show much anxiety around the suspenseful bits. But there is: kidnapping, betrayal of trust by an authority figure, said authority figure actively trying to harm the main characters. I am sure those things could be disturbing for some young readers so wouldn't hurt to throw in some discussion for those parts.

As it looks like Olivia won't bond with Snowflake in time for their graduation nor find Snowflakes magic in time, she becomes resigned to the fact she'll be the only one of her friends left behind at the school.

However in a twist of events, Olivia finds herself sharing her deepest secret after she gets taken by the person who's been causing all the trouble around the academy...

A perfect short adventure fantasy book teaching about friendship and life issues to curl up with and get lost into another world entirely great for young readers and those of us who wish unicorns were real as adults too!

This one finally told us who the "bad guy" is. It's the graduation of the Sapphire dorm (at least for those that have bonded with their unicorns and if said unicorns have found their magic) we've been reading about the last several books. I wouldn't read this one to my preschooler again because it did talk a lot about the bad guy in a way that sounded scary for a preschooler.

I liked this more than the other books in the series. It was super fun to read, and Snowflake looks amazing on the front cover. Annoyingly, I could already guess the bad person was Ms Primrose from the start- and by that I mean from the start of the whole Unicorn Academy series.
