It was a mistake to seek him out. Now she's caught, again.

"Tell me why I should let you go? Give me reasons,"
he says, as he writes upon her naked skin with his calligraphy pen.

While she struggles to remember why she should be free, he will use her and use her, and twist her around his fingers.

He will make her forget her name, her sanity, and how to be a good girl.

Once upon a time, he was nice.

This is not a romance. This is carnal with graphic sex, dark and depraved, and this is a man to fear.

Used is set in the Dark Hearts series world but is a standalone story.

This book was drastically different than I thought it would be...which is my fault for not researching my read a little more. I thought this was a dark romance...but if this is romance, then I’m the next Meghan Markle.

Again, this was my mistake...so if this is your preferred sub-genre, ignore this review.

His palm pressed, his thumb made soft rhythmic indentations on my mons. I hung, caught in a moment of no time, mouth open, unable to stop him, unwilling to, and there was the puzzle.
There was why i had to kill this man - he made me crave what I should not want.

I originally read this prior to reading any of the other Mesmer books, and that definitely impacted my enjoyment of this book. My second read I picked up lots of nuances, breadcrumbs and feels that I had simply missed due to my unfamiliarity with this world.

Isak is still a vile, depraved and evil being, or should I say the monster inside him is. There are very much undertones of Jekyll and Hyde in his character, though he doesn't seem to bothered by his dark side. Red was either incredibly foolish or very brave in her attempt to rid herself of the Mesmer effects. I can only assume her actions were born out of utter desperation and I found myself very much sympathising with her.

Used was written as an erotic horror and was never meant to have a HEA, but reader pressure and author whim means we shall soon have a follow up book, Isak & Red. This book really does dive into the depths of perversion, degeneracy and corruption and Red is dragged unwillingly into it, doesn't agree to anything that she is subjected to and yet, in general, enjoys and even welcomes her degradation. Those moments when her body disobeys her mind are equally horrifying, heartbreaking and hot. Oh you bad woman, Ms Silverwood, for making me enjoy the terrible actions enacted on our poor heroine.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing more of Isak & Red, and hoping she gets a little of her own back!

Past the paved driveway and the parked and polished cars, the white wall of his compound cut off the sky. Palms planted at the base of the wall waved in a breeze. I could run and climb the wall.
"No you can't," Isak whispered, kissing my neck then pulling me to the blanket, to sit between his outstretched legs. He wrapped his arms around around me.
Kisses were for lovers, not for enemies. How could he simply
kiss me?
Waves roared and sucked the sand into its embrace. The sun baked my legs. Wearing a bikini, sitting on a beach in a beautiful place, and all I wanted was to be gone from here.

This was awesome. I was in the mood for a short, dark erotic horror and this scratched the itch. I should qualify that I like horror. I like both movies and books that push boundaries and I think dark erotic horror is able to push boundaries in ways other genres can't. Sometimes I like being shocked, although I do want there to be a story. Whenever a horror or dark erotic story doesn't work out for me it's because it ended up being the wrong sub-genre of horror for my tastes (like splatterpunk, I learned that wasn't the sub-genre for me after reading PORN by Matt Shaw.) or I was let down by the writing style/execution.

I think a couple reasons I liked this so much was that it was psychologically experimental and had surrealist elements.

One criticism I've seen in the reviews for the mesmer world is that it's hard to suspend disbelief and go with the concept of mesmers. I think I was willing to suspend disbelief because of how the mind control was executed with the writing style. There would be lines like this:

Men in suits, blond and bald and dark, their faces already blank. Remember, remember. Blond. Dark. I stared. The blur where their faces should be frightened me beyond anything Isak had yet done. I couldn’t even see them. Isak was deleting them from my head. The dark curls on Vitor’s head looked perfectly formed and neat. He was suave, and confident as a snake about to swallow something plump, something with a beating heart.
Isak kept talking - words meant nothing.

There would be passages where you would sort of feel the heroine's disorientation because of the mesmer influence on her. I was into it. After scenes like this I felt like I was watching a surreal indie art house film.

I never felt like I 100% understood everything that was going on, and I'm grateful for that - it's how it should be. Isak was half mad because of the mesmer infection and this girl was under some intense mind control, so the way the scenes and inner monos were structured felt authentic to the story. I'm glad the author never info-dumped exactly how the mesmer thing worked...it was pretty disturbing to find out about some of the subliminal orders this woman was under. The entire story almost had a dreamlike aspect to it; except one dark, depraved dream.

4.5 stars.

My Review

So I pulled on my big girl pants and gave this one a crack ready for the continuation of Isak and Red’s story.
I must confess I was slightly apprehensive on where this one might actually venture what dark and delightfully depraved acts might have sprung forth from this authors creative brain and got to say bravo this one definitely delivered the goods on that particular front.
I’m never going to look at a suitcase the same way again that’s for sure.

This was wicked and morally corrupt a journey down a murky rabbit-hole where poor Red is subjected to all sorts of wicked and questionably dubious behaviour.
Isak is just so so bad but there were times he seemed to show a tiny flicker of conscience just a smidgen though and if you blinked you would miss it altogether making you wonder if you even saw it there at all or if just maybe it was actually part of some whole wicked game to cruelly inspire hope in Red only to snatch it away at the last minute the most inhumane action of all.

Isak here seems to be straggling a line drawn in the sand teetering on the edge, split almost down the middle into two parts with both halves of him the man and the monster in constant opposition to see who will finally reign triumphant.

So just a heads up this ones not a romance but erotic horror,
though we do have the continuation of Red and Isak’s journey in the next book which is dark romance and I for one am so glad that this is not the end of the road for poor Red, man that would suck.
I did Love the finish here but am also glad that there’s more yet to come, some closure even.

This is novella length but this didn’t have an impact on the writing itself, I felt connected and invested in the story and its outcome and it’s very well written as well, just do be aware this one does contain triggers but it’s nowhere near as bad as I was expecting, yes It’s very dark but I could still deal and it helps knowing there’s more to yet come and their story is still relatively unwritten and evolving forward I mean anything could happen.
So yeh I’m glad I decided to give this one a chance, it’s certainly different and quite unique.
I voluntary reviewed a copy of Used.

Used

Is set in the world of Mesmers from Cari Silverwood's Dark Hearts series. However, this story features different main characters than what was in the Dark Hearts series.

World Basics

Mesmers are the men with the ability to mind control women. These men are often corrupted by this power, have an increase sex drive, and their sexual pleasure often leans towards the sadistic side. This & other nuances are explained during the story.

Main Genres

Urban Fantasy/Paranormal, Dark Erotica

Characters

Isak (main male character), it is implied he was once a man with good morals but by the time of this story, those are few and threadbare.

Red (main female character), once a strong independent woman that is now fighting to keep her sense of self, and free herself from the depraved Isak.

Overall

A twisted story for fans of Dark Erotica.

Wow...just...wow

This might deserve a 4 star...I don't know...I'm so fu%$ed up from reading it haha I am going to go with a 5 star even though I still have questions...still feel like there is more to be said. I want to know what happens next...is there someway for Red to bring back the good? I would really like that because I kind of like Red and don't want her story to end like that. Also...names I want to know her name. Just ugh...like I connected with her in that short time and now I want more.

Alright alright....enough rambling. This is a good dark twisty short story. You will have questions...you will want more...will you get it? No.

I don't know okay. I just don't know. I need someone to talk to after this. I even talk to the author and I just...I need a drink. Just...ugh...ugh...ugh...

So ya if you want f-ed up to for it. If you want to question your sanity go for it. If you want to lay awake going what...what what...go for it. Just be prepared. D@mn...

Dark, devious and deadly.

I loved this. Cari has a unique way with words - they spring up from the page with rainbow colours, taste, and smells. I'm not sure I've met a writer in dark romance who is as descriptive. Her metaphors are sinfully delicious and her characters are delightful - in a dark and deadly way, of course.

This gave me everything I wanted in a dark romance, but still left me longing for more. At the end I was left with plenty of questions, but sometimes it's nice to arrange your own ending. That way I can decide what happens to whom and who gets punished for their misdeeds. In my mind, someone needed to suffer a lot. Mmhmm.

It was a bright day in Cuba when Isak first saw Wolfe and when he first saw Red. For Red,it was a very dark day. He let her go,after a few days, and that should’ve been the last time they saw eachother. But Red can’t leave those days behind her.....and she makes a fatal decision. She searches for Isak.....to kill him. What happens? You need to find out yourself! This may be a short story, but it’s definitely not sweet! No,this short, set in the world of Dark Hearts, was really dark.....and i loved it! Thank you Cari, for giving me this dark little gem!

Can you handle the dark? Or will you run screaming toward the light?

What is a mesmer? Does anyone truly know? Red thought she did, until she lost a piece of her soul that fateful night she met Isak in Cuba. Desperate to escape, obliterate what happened from her mind, she flees. But is there any escape? Isak’s never forgotten Red. She haunts his mind. How is that even possible? No one affects a mesmer! When Red can take no more, she somehow tracks Isak to his lair. Her intent? Destroy him…forever. But Isak's evolved, no longer who or what he once was. As the horror of the past creeps into Red’s heart with unbelievable ease, the terror returns. Her anger, defiance, utter hatred are her only weapons against the evil stalking her. Is there any escape from a mesmer? Or will Isak possess her, body and soul, for all eternity?

Cari Silverwood is always unpredictable, a true mistress of the dark. In my opinion Used is the darkest story she’s ever written. Red and Isak are unlike any characters she’s created before. There's mystery, uncertainty, and complete unpredictability here. The ending was so unexpected that I sat there in shock. I can’t say anything more about the characters or the storyline without giving away everything. The writing is superb, as always. Fair warning though. This is extremely dark. There is no HEA. Honestly, it was almost too much for me. But if you’re a true fan of erotic horror, you’ll love this book. Cari Silverwood again demonstrates her versatility. She’s brilliant at writing all kinds of hot steaminess, from the comic to the sublime, from sci-fi to horror-filled sexiness. She captivates and enthralls regardless of the subject matter! This book is unlike any other. While Used wasn’t the perfect book for me, I honestly feel it deserves four stars for its soul shattering darkness, the unique characters and story, and the unparalleled writing. It is riveting!

A final note. This is an ADULT book. It contains explicit language dark themes, nonconsensual/dubious consensual sexual scenes, and no HEA. If you don't enjoy this genre, this may not be the book for you. There are book synopses and reviews available on Goodreads and Amazon. Use these resources. DON'T LEAVE A NEGATIVE REVIEW WHEN YOU KNOW YOU WON'T ENJOY THE BOOK. It's not fair to the author. She works hard to provide a quality work product. If you know you'll object to a book's subject matter before you buy it, you're doing yourself and the author an extreme disservice.

Thanks for reading my review and happy reading!

This was a deliciously dark and terrifying tale set in Silverwood's mesmer world, where certain men can "influence" susceptible women. The fact that a man can control you no matter what you think may already terrify you, but this story delves deep into the psychological mindset. Red is the female who tries to kill the mesmer. This is the story of their destructive dance. Who will win at the end?

I found it interesting that this mesmer Isak called it an infection, and seemed to separate himself from his monster. He was a lawyer, and the games he plays could be compared to trial proceedings. Is Red the prosecutor in this story?

Some of the revelations that Red has are what truly terrified me. Wondering what is truth, what is made up, who is she really? Does she submit out of shame or regret? In typical Silverwood fashion, she leaves some ambiguity. But the last note she leaves you with doesn't give you any warm fuzzies. Its thought provoking at its finest.

Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely. What will Isak become if he stops trying to hold back his monster?

You know when books are supposed to be all "dark" but then they really aren't? Not this book. This is twisted, dark erotica, and there is no HEA. At all. I had to keep reminding myself-there's no happy ending, there's no happy ending. That way I’d be ready for whatever would happen...I wasn’t.

This takes place in the “Dark Hearts” world where some men have developed the ability to control women’s thoughts and make them do anything. You can see where complete control like this could lead.

If you go into it accepting (or at least knowing) that, the ending won't be quite so gut-wrenching. Just keep saying, "it’s only a story" and enjoy this very erotic, very wrong, non-romance. If you like it dark but not this depraved, try Wolfe.

Not sure how to express my thoughts on this book. It was well-written, unusual; the prose was engaging. It wasn't a question of enjoyment rather mental entrapment. I did not expect a happy ending but was left desiring closure, bereft, wondering what the point was. Was the message that she never should have returned, that she brought about her own downfall, and his? Or was the point that there was no objective other than to end?

This story was atypical, creative while being intriguing and thrilling. It left me pleasingly discontented and unsettled, which resonated in the writing style. For these reasons, it was not simply a good read as it to suggest it was just OK. Instead, it was a provoking, hypnotizing, somewhat discomforting read. In sum, it moved me. And, I wish there were a part two. Sigh

Mesmerizing?

Not being one for hypnotic mind control, this was an interesting depiction of the totality or not of that type of control presenting views from both Red and the monster. While a shorter story it took me a while to read it thru.

Red is coming for him. She's a CIA agent he had in his possesion 3 years ago and let go. Isak got an infection and became what is known as a mesmer with hypotic-like power over certain women that are suseptible to his control particularly sexual. He left her with suggestions she couldn't overcome and her life had become unbearable. No orgasms, no lovers and no way of explaining what had happened to her. She couldn't continue living like that so he had to die. Too bad for her he knew she was coming and found her first. Oh the unbelievable things he did to her and had her do. The things she endured will have you both aroused and horrified and unable to stop reading.

Beware!

Isak is a Mesmer. His unique control of susceptible women is all encompassing. He is able to permeate their very being. There is no doubt that he is evil--- psychopathic and dementedly EVIL. Does he despise his evil or glory in his depravity. I am still trying to figure this out. Either way, reading this story will leave your mind churning and hating and definitely craving more of Ms. Silverwood's writing. Read this if you dare!!!

This story takes places in the world of the Wicked series and Wolfe. We meet a new mesmer and his victim Red. Be warned it is dark and like the other stories, there is no happy end in side.

Idan feels he has things under control, until Red comes back. His routine and control are gone. He has reds mind firmly in his grasp while he does terrible things to her body at the same time. Red is never quite sure about what is being done to her. What is real and what is not.

It is a great psychological dark book.

Used is a spin-off story from The Dark Hearts Trilogy and Wolfe. This novella is part of an anthology When the Dark Wins and won’t be published alone.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

Wow “Used” is dark, very dark. Cari Silverwood says that this is the darkest story that she has written to date. And, since I have read most of what she has written I would agree. Used is not a romance and is closer to erotic horror.

I will admit this was my least favorite of Cari Silverwood’s books. I think due to the fact there was no romance. Oh, there was sex involved but then you can have sex and no romance and don’t expect an HEA because there isn’t one. I am still going to rate it 4 stars and the reason for that is. It is a psychological horror story and I think that Cari Silverwood achieved what she was going for with this book.

I think Cari Silverwood tests to see just how far she can go with the written word.

5 dark mesmerizing stars

This series... Mmmmm Hmmm. There is something about mind control and fantasy and not being in control that is just delicious. This author can weave a tale better than just about anyone I have read that writes dark and twisty. If I close my eyes I can picture the scene that she is writing. I am not sure what that says about me that I am drawn to her work --or that I LOVE it so much because like I said this author pushed the envelope of what is right and moral.

If you don't like dark, taboo, or 'Heroes" that tend to be more questionable than swoony then look no further. I will gladly keep following this author down the rabbit hole (and have extra therapy sessions available if needed when the time comes). Anxious for the rest of this box set to come out.

What did I just read????? If you think that Cari Silverwood's mesmer world is dark, you may need a new word for "dark" when it comes to describing Used. What really spoke to me throughout this story and amidst all the depravity was the struggle between good and evil. While you have the feisty heroine who doesn't give up and who is definitely worth rooting for, the real battlefield is more internal than the battle happening between Isak and Red. Will Isak be able to defeat his monster? Does he really want to come out on top? Read this little gem to find out!

I just love Cari's "Mesmer's World" its unique, intriguing and disturbing. You can't help but think if something like that is actually possible.

the girl - endured the dark place she had learned to live in, the dark she...her body craved, her mind broken as much as her body
but now she's on a mission, she knows she's strong enough and keeps telling herself in and out and don't make contact.

the man - there was no one like her, it hasn't been since she's been gone. The mold was special that he created he missed the mind warp, the intensity of having her under his complete control. But was she completely in his control? if she wasn't, then wasn't that the appeal for him?

Imagine your mind not being your own again, its like you on the outside looking in. You like it, you need it but the good side the mere corner of your mind tells you its bad, wrong and it's not like you. You fight. Will you win?
He knows what she needs, he needs it as well, she's imprinted on him and he owns her very soul.

Used by Cari Silverwood was a twisted and very dark erotic 5 star read.
I have missed Cari’s dark world and I was so excited to once again get pulled into the Mesmer crazy AF darkness. Mesmer’s take control of women through their mind, even though you know you don’t want to do it you have no choice. And the sex all I can say is wow.

Red is on her way to kill Isak. Ever since Cuba he has had a control over her that she can’t explain. She needs to get it done before he knows she is there. BUT, what she doesn't know is, she’s too late.

Isak, where to start with this dark, hot, crazy AF man. There is something about Red that he can’t get out of his mind. Now that she is here he will show her who is in control. Will Red survive?

Did he not know what his monster did when he allowed it out? Was it him and was he it? Or were they two halves that barely met?

Overall if you are looking for a vanilla type read this is NOT the book for you. If you like to be pushed to your limits of what you can handle in a very dark world then this is exactly what you're looking for. There are scenes that will make you cringe and question your own sanity and I LOVED it. Thank you Cari for not being afraid to bring us these great reads, I look forward to reading more from Iask and Red.

Like the other books in the Wicked Hearts series this story is about a woman named Red who comes under the control of a mesmer named Isak. This story is twisted and fucked up and awesome. A short read but enjoyable if you've read the series. May be confusing if you haven't read the other books though so read them first.

Another boundary pushing tale derived from the Mesmer series.
Imagine men being able to influence certain women's minds to do whatever they want them to do. To be pawns in their sadistic games without the possibility to escape.
One woman develops a resistance to the compulsion and now she is on a rampage to rid the world of Mesmers.

This is a dark read from the Mesmer world. Red should have stayed away but she instead goes after Isak and plans to kill him. Unfortunately for Red that won’t be an easy task. Lots of suspense and drama and don’t expect any type of happy ending. This read keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what Isak has planned next. The story is fast-paced and the ending is definitely a shocker. I loved it.

It was my first Cari Silverwood’s book and I will definitely read other stories from the author. I wished it would have been longer, I felt the story wasn’t at it full potential, I wanted more details here and there but I really liked it. It’s definitely dark, its twisted, its terrifying, it plays with your insides. And the end, omg!
