*** A Steamy Regency Romance*** Miss Amanda Waters knew full well that a rake should not be trusted. But when a severely wounded Lord Warwick crashed through her front door, bleeding, and asking her to keep his secret. What choice did she have?
Heaven help her if anyone learned she was nursing a British Lord back to health in her upstairs bedroom. Her friends would disown her and most of the ton would think her a fool. But when she discovers Lord Warwick’s true mission, she has no choice but to help.
Lord Warwick never expected to need the help of someone like Miss Waters. But his mission was too important. England’s very survival rested in the balance.
The fact that it might cost him his heart was immaterial. Somethings cannot be denied.
The story here was decent. I enjoyed the intrigue of the spy game the author provided, and the romance was believable - although it seemed a bit rushed (possibly slightly contrived?) in places.
But the real problem here were all the grammatical and editing errors. They were numerous and very distracting. "[The marriage mart] seemed very mercantile" was used, when I think the author meant that "[The marriage mart] seemed very mercenary". Numerous times the homophones "their" and "there" were confused. Various other mistakes throughout made it difficult to stay in the story, and I was tempted on more than one occasion to toss this onto the did-not-finish pile because of them.
With a really good editor and little re-working of a few sections, this could have been a 4-star story.
This was such a well concocted story will strong characters, believable plot, wonderful romance and emotion. BUT. But, the author did not know the difference between a period and a comma. The author had run on sentences and dangling participle. It was truly painful to read. Where is the editor, Because they need to be fired.
Miss Amanda Waters is intelligent and independent and, thanks to her father’s bequest, is able to provide for herself so she has no need to marry.
Lord Warwick is a known rake. He has never shown anything but a polite interest in Amanda at the many balls and events of London society. He is also a spy for the English government, seeking traitors who ally with the French to harm England. He arrives on Amanda’s doorstep near death in the middle of the night after being shot while on a mission. Although she summons a doctor, she honors his request for anonymity and keeps his identity a secret until he is able to leave many days later. During his recovery, Lord Warwick masquerading as John Tolliver comes to admire Amanda – her intelligence, strong character, and beauty – and comes to think of her as his Angel. On her part, Amanda is drawn to him and sees the man he really is instead of the personality he portrays to the ton.
Now that she knows he is an agent for England, she will do anything to help him and her country but both John and Amanda realize that there is no future for them because of her status and his dangerous duties. The men who tried to kill him are still out there and a plot to undermine England is afoot. Lord Warwick must uncover the traitors and Amanda intends to help him.
This is a wonderful historical romance by G. L. Snodgrass. The writing is richly descriptive and the added intrigue makes for an enjoyable read. I couldn’t put it down and finished it in one day.
I was really pleased with this story. Amanda and Warwick were my favourite characters from the last book in the series.
Amanda is awesome. A woman who due to her father's foresight and her own intelligence doesn't need to marry. She can live independently and do as she pleases. She was content to live life on her own terms. Which is excellent. Then she saw beneath the handsome, shallow surface of Lord Warwick and discovered an intelligent, dangerous and intriguing man. Men always mess up the best laid plans. 🤪
Warwick ends up at Amanda's house bleeding everywhere. He is very ... Appealing. Handsome, strong, honourable and intelligent he is admirable but what's even better is that he recognizes Amanda's intelligence. His only reservations about her help are his own protective instincts, not any belief that she can't because she is a woman. And to make him even better he is adamant about sharing rewards and praise.
I enjoyed this story of an intelligent heroine who isn't a noblewoman or destitute and a hero who, yes, is a manwh0re, but also doesn't treat the heroine like something to be used once and discarded. I also liked that the heroine was more than simply a damsel in distress or bait to catch the villain. What I disliked were the capitalization, spelling, punctuation, tense, and other errors littering the content. A note to the author: Hire a competent editor.
I really don't like this old chestnut. But she made it halfway decent with them actually acting like spies. I didn't like Amanda. She was a bit of nothing, an idea that never materialized into an actual fully fleshed out character. Bluestocking, book and glasses check. Photographic memory just to make it easier for the plot. Kind, caregiver then nothing. She's just a foil for John. It's a solid meh for me.
Produced at much higher audiobook studio quality than earlier works by this author, this series concludes in a plot awash with spies, as the series where the books are are linked by the heroes being friend ends with a wounded operative being aided by a prim Lady with eidetic memory.
(I encourage the author to release a few of her books to audiobook library app circulation, since my check of 15 major libraries found 0 works by her.)
I liked the book. I liked the characters. I liked the progression of the romance.
But seriously, didn't anyone look at this before it was published? I mean, even a run through Microsoft Word's spell check and grammar check would have massively improved things. An actual editor would have made this a 5 star read.
Amanda is a bankers daughter and her father left her well provided for. She would not have to marry. She had her own house and income. But she was not rich enough to attract fortune hunters. One night a man who has been shot twice comes to her door. She nurses him back to health. It turns out he is a government agent chasing spies. Things get exciting as Amanda helps him identify the spies.
I think this was one of the best books in this series. All are very good and can be read alone, but better as a series. John and Amanda were great together. A few errors, but all minor.
It was so interesting to find a historical story with the heroine being strong and smart. The give and take between the H and the h was very well written. Can't wait to read another in the series.
I loved this books. Though I have yet to read the beginning books in the series it was easy to follow as a stand alone story line. I loved the characters. Amanda and John' s story was fast paced and entertaining. I couldn't put it down . Enjoy reading it!
So hard to find a love story that doesn't just start, tell about them finding each other, and then end. I loved that there was an actual plot the story. I also liked that the woman could stand her, own and was not held down by the social customs of her time.
The story grabs you in the beginning and holds your attention the out the hold book. GLSnodgrass is wonderful story teller. I will be reading more of her books.
A five star story. Thankyou for presenting such a lovely story of romance mixed with intellegence and mystery. I really liked all the series and would love to read more and suggest other customers to read as well.
Another wonderful book by G L Snodgrass. The story was so good that I could not put the book down until I was finished. The story is full of excitement and of course love.
I love a smart and practical heroine. I also love a smitten hero. The spying was intriguing. I loved Molly and her man. It was billed as steamy, but I thought the steam was average. I just may be used to extra spicy. I’m not sure.
Story keeps you engaged. Characters will fascinate you. Dialog is lively. Action scenes are easy to follow. A good read for the historical romance lover.
I love a story where a bookish, intelligent, and maybe introverted woman finds a man who appreciates her, but... OMFG, the lack of editing drove me mad!
