There were a few problems.

Considering the title of the book (and knowing there's a book for Dutch), I didn't expect this book to be so love-triangle-y.
Yes, I knew Dutch, Mantis and Alegria were having issues, but I thought it'd be more like "Dutch and Alegria were an item once, he's totally out of the picture now and Alegria and Mantis need to find their way back together".
Well, it wasn't like that and I'm disppointed.
Don't get me wrong, I'm really enjoying this series and its characters, but this book didn't do it for me.
I had a really, really hard time trying to like the main characters.
Dutch is kind of a main character, or maybe a strong secondary character in this story, I'm not sure. He, Alegria and Mantis have been best friends for years and Dutch has been lusting and pining over Alegria for just as long, even though he's fully aware she's in a relationship with Mantis. And when Mantis and Alegria aren't together anymore, Dutch jumps right into bed with her.
Ok, Mantis and Alegria weren't a couple anymore, but come on. They were all friends for so long, and he's been "in love with her" for so long, it's not like it caught them off guard and Dutch and Alegria just couldn't help it. It felt like he was just waiting for an opportunity.
Still Dutch had some more redeeming qualities than the other two.
Mantis pissed me off for other reasons. He was arrogant, entitled and he claimed he didn't want to be a hero...he just wanted to single-handedly eliminate all bad people in the world. Riiiiight.
And it rubbed me the wrong way how he talked about Alegria. Oh she couldn't understand why he had to take on every assignment, he didn't have a choice. But that was because he was from USA and she was French, so she didn't have his work ethics. Oh. My. God!
Seriously?
Of course, because there aren't hard working people outside USA, he's the only golden boy.
On the other hand, I couldn't make myself like Alegria (but not because of her "work ethics"). She was a brat and egoistical, she led Dutch on, but wouldn't let go of Mantis. And when they were both talking to another woman, she felt irritated and moody. For God's sakes, woman, grow up.
And to add to all that, for being so well trained and one of the best ones in the field, they sure made some really poor, unthought decisions.
As I said, I'm enjoying this series and I'll keep reading it. It's just that this book's left a bad taste in my mouth, even though it hooked me enough to keep reading it.
