Having sparked the ire of a cantankerous county resident with plenty of money to burn, criminal investigator Larry Macklin is concerned he may have seriously damaged his father’s chances of re-election as sheriff. When he receives a mysterious phone call from the publisher of the local paper on Pelican Island, Larry is happy to distract himself with the investigation into a possible suicide that may actually be a murder with ties to one of his old cases.

However, the strange death quickly takes a back seat when the forecast calls for a Category 3 hurricane to make landfall just west of Adams County. But even as Larry and the rest of the department grapple with emergency management preparations, another body is discovered with evidence pointing to one of Larry’s biggest fears – that blackmailer and murderer Blake Klein might still be alive and targeting Larry for revenge.

As the storm rages, a killer moves closer to Larry and the ones that he loves. Will he stop the murderer in time, or will this be the case that robs him of everything?

Deputy Larry Macklin is back in the middle of a rip-roaring crime that needs to be solved sooner rather than later.

Larry is in the crosshairs of his father, the Sheriff who is running for re-election. Larry's temper got the better of him and now the very wealthy man is posting billboards all over the place in favor of the sheriff's competition.

He's a little happy that a publisher friend gets a hold of him and asks for his help in investigating a suicide that may not actually be a suicide. It has ties to an old case of Larry's, one that was never completely solved.

And in the midst of all the normal chaos, a Category 3 hurricane is bearing down on them.

Another body is found and Larry's biggest fear is that a murderer that should be dead really isn't.

As the storm rages, a killer moves closer to the ones that he loves.... and that scares him more than anything.

As with all the books in this series, it is well-written, filled with page-turning suspense and mystery with dollops of humor thrown in. Although this is the 11th book of the series, it can be read as a stand alone, but for the full enjoyment of these characters and their backgrounds, I highly recommend starting at the very beginning.

The characters are finely drawn with their issues and flaws and humor. I've so enjoyed the growing relationship between Larry and his father. And of course, the one character who really deserves a mention ... Mauser.

Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

ANOTHER WINNER. I COULD FEEL THE STORM COMING AND TROUBLE WITH IT. I COULD'NT FIGURE OUT WHO-DONE-IT UNTIL ABOUT 75% I LIKE WHEN THAT HAPPENS. YAY! ;D

September's Fury

Ehh. I finished so I'm giving this book 3 stars. It was very unrealistic and too "cutesy". The word, "Lame" seems appropriate.

Another fine entry in the Larry Macklin mystery series. With a hurricane looming and everyone preparing emergency management offices to use during the storm, Larry is approached by Luke, the newspaper guy from Pelican Bay (featured in an earlier novel).

He wants Larry to look over a case - a man found dead in his car in the national forest, deemed a suicide, but which he believes was murder, committed by or for Blake Klein, the corrupt sheriff, who placed video cameras in his rental properties to catch people in situations he could use for blackmail purposes, taken down in that previous book with Larry's help. Klein was believed to be dead in a boat crash at the end of that book, so this would be interesting if true.

In the meantime, they are also hunting for a new face in town, who has shown up to rob drug dealers of their money and drugs. As things get complicated, the thought keeps bubbling into Larry's head that maybe Klein wasn't dead after all - this tenuous connection continues to get stronger when the robber is found executed and has one of Klein's cards on him, and when Larry finds a game camera mounted on a tree across from his house.

The hurricane blows ashore, and Luke is found in one of the conference rooms, alive, but barely, having had his head bashed in. Is it due to his theory about Klein being alive and looking to get into the drug business?

As almost everyone involved in the emergency management for the storm is in one of two buildings, it now becomes a sort of locked-door mystery: all the suspects are here. Cara then goes missing, and there is a frantic hunt to find her. Once again, all of the suspicions are contained very, very locally within the building. The race is on to find her, and the perps, before anyone else gets hurt.

I'll just leave it at that, instead of doing any spoilers about the end. You should read the series, starting at the beginning.

I thought that this book stuck to the theme of the earlier versions of the series. The characters are well represented and things move along as usual. The Police Chief has decided to run against the incumbent Sheriff, Macklin's dad, so there's a lot of tension in the Sheriff's office. Drugs and dealers are still a big problem and it gets worse when a dealer is found dead with a card from a guy known to be a criminal but was suspected as being dead. Then Deputy Sheriff Larry Macklin's girlfriend, Cara, is abducted. Macklin finally figures out that the kidnapping is a diversion to isolate him. Everything moves along and Cara is found, albeit much too soon for the kidnapper's intent. Then the hunt for the kidnappers begins. Because of a hurricane, everyone is basically locked down in the Sheriff's compound so Macklin figures out that it must be an inside job. This is where the story goes to nothing. The author either got tired of writing or he couldn't come up with a better way to tell the end of the story. In one page, the kidnappers basically fall into Macklin's hands and admit readily that they did it to recover items from the evidence room that would be incriminating to them, and that the business card that was found was just used as a diversion to get Mackin away from the office. Of all of Howe's Mackin series books, this one is the most disappointing and there is no need for it.

Another somewhat predictable storyline and climatic outcome. Having read almost all of the books now, I know it is going to be a character introduced rather early, minor to mid story time and is never really suspected by Larry until the last couple of chapters. In this adventure a slight change in that there are two guilty individuals, actually three, but only two are in the exciting climax.

Regardless, it’s still an entertaining read, it’s clean, no sex, eff instead of the other word, the Larry and Cara relationship isn’t overly sappy and a lot of likable reoccurring characters. Pete continues to be my fav, my least fav is Mauser. I would of sent that dog to the shelter along with Ivy several books back. Alvin is a keeper though.

Larry is roped in to investigating a suicide which his editor friend believers to be a cover up for murder possibly perpetrated by Blake Klein who may have survived a boat crash and may be continuing where he left off blackmailing and murdering people to get his hands on money. Another murder of a crook who is robbing drug dealers shows signs of being the work of Klein as well throwing Larry more off track of what is really happening. Hurricane Marcy is also thrown into the mix to complicate his investigation and everything is brought to a head when Cara is kidnapped during their refuge from the storm and Larry gets to grips with the real perpetrators and the reason for their subterfuge. Well written and descriptive dialogue and good characters.

Twists, turns and compelling story

Another delightful entry into this series. I love how there's always a bit of humour brought into things, usually in the form of a giant horse...I mean dog. It's great to see how returning characters develop as well how new ones are always introduced with a bit of backstory. Eddie especially has come a long way as this series continues and I can't wait to see how much further he comes. There's not as much banter between Larry and his father in this book however it's explained why that is.

LOVED the book and this one had a surprise for me. My name showed up as a character and thankfully was not killed off :). Her chosen profession was way different from mine. Despite loving all animals large and small (except snakes), I don't ever see me at the back of a cow with the long gloves.

If you ever need to give her a middle name, Christina would be perfect and just call her Tina.

My goal was to catch up to where I finished September in September and will read October in a couple weeks. Great series.

Love this series

If book 12 is the end of Larry Macklin I'm going to be seriously disappointed. I've eagerly looked forward to each new month of adventures. The cast of characters, including the four footed ones, is fantastic and the solution to the mystery always a surprise. Throwing a hurricane into the mix just makes it that much more "Florida" considering that we spend 4 or 5 months worrying about them and every few years living through them. Bravo to A. E. Howe.

Eleventh outing in this Larry Macklin series. A pretty good read. I'm really enjoying this series. Each entry seems to get better than the last. Along with a colorful cast of supporting characters, Larry seems to get himself mixed up into some difficult mysteries to solve. Mauser the dog is a really unique character himself. And as usual girlfriend Cara gets involved in the middle of the mystery as well. This is a must read series. Check it out.

Hurricane Tight

Although I’ve enjoyed all the books I’ve read from this series, this has been my favorite so far, even though I wasn’t as surprised by the bad guy as Larry was. I’ve lived in hurricane-prone places for significant portions of my life, and Howe’s descriptions are so realistic that I actually caught myself thinking that I still hadn’t gone to the store for water before remembering that I wasn’t in a real hurricane cone.

Enjoyable whodunit

A very easy read without the easy guessing of the bad guy. No redundancy in the characters that make you want to reach through the pages and throttle them. The author doesn’t spend 4 chapters explaining why everyone is the way they are. Missed Eddie in this book.

Ridiculous plot

The plot is ridiculous, contrived the makes little sense. The writing is amateurish and childish. The characters all behave like school children and have little depth or definition. The plot plods along with little progress, then it's all resolved in a dramatic rush in the last ten percent.

Enjoyable

I love reading books in a series. The Larry Macklin series is one of my favorites. I get a good laugh over the antics of Mauser especially when Alvin the Pug asserts his dominance over the Great Dane. I, too, have a small dog who is Alpha over our Pyrenees

Another twisty tale

I remain fascinated with A.E. Howe’s imagination. Somehow the prose is less than inspired (sorry!) but the characters (both two and four legged) and the mystery make for entertaining and engaging reading.

A storm,of sorts.

The series continues with several shady characters entering the scene. Tightly written and logical in its procession the author weaves a compelling story of family strife and related conflict. This leads to reaching for the next in the series, which I shall do.

Ghosts from the past - or is it?

Strange things are happening, reminiscent of a past encounter. In the midst of all that, a category 2 or 3 hurricane is threatening to hit. Everyone has an assigned place to be, even the bad guys.

A complex storyline was so well and seamlessly tied together it kept my attention to the very end and left me ready to find out where Larry and his father go from here.
