Bruce Grobbelaar is the most decorated goalkeeper in Liverpool FCs 125-year history. And yet, question marks have followed him around; question marks about his goalkeeping suitability after arriving on Merseyside; question marks about his integrity after match fixing allegations were laid against him. Here, Grobbelaar takes you to Africa, where nothing is at it seems; he takes you back to an era when Liverpool ruled Europe; he takes you to the benches of the Anfield dressing room, where only the strongest personalities survived. For the first time, he takes you inside the court room, detailing the draining fight to clear his name.
An enjoyable account of the life of the extroverted former Liverpool Goalkeeper, Bruce Grobbelaar. It is fair to say that Bruce has lived an action packed life and this book does a great job of capturing this.
From his humble beginnings in what was then Rhodesia, to his experiences in Bush warfare to becoming one of football's biggest characters in the dominant Liverpool side of the 80's to his battle to clear his name in relation to match fixing allegations exposed by The Sun at the tail end of his career. It is all captured here in a easy to read and cogent manner.
Grobbelaar comes across throughout as a decent, thoughtful and empathic person. The chapter on Hillsborough makes for particularly poignant reading. An excellent account of a life lived on the edge.
Whilst I did enjoy Bruce’s story, it wasn’t the full picture that I hoped for.
I was left with a lot of unanswered questions at the conclusion of the book, most notably in relation to the match fixing allegations that he faced many years ago. Rather than answering questions, it left me with a few more.
The book is a good account but can occasionally be a little frustrating.
Bruce is an icon and a Liverpool legend. I was very much looking forward to reading about the exploits of one of LFCs most colourful characters but was left wanting more.
Worth a read but not as polished as it might have been.
This is a great read about a great goalkeeper. He speaks of his time in the army, his successful career at LFC and his court case over match fixing. He was a eccentric character in and outside of football. A must read for all Liverpool football fans.
