The World of Miniatures: From Simple Cabins to Ornate Palaces

Rate this book
If you think of dolls houses as usually being period houses, it's time to think again! In this amazing compendium of miniature buildings, author Sarah Walkley looks at the many other styles of construction created by miniatures enthusiasts including Each of the 12 chapters will be accompanied by tips on the key techniques needed to recreate a particular style of property. This will include, for example, how to lay wooden floors or work with molding to create a grand country estate, or how to install lighting in a lighthouse. It aims to provide inspiration to those that are new to the hobby, or want to take their model-making a stage further, as well as being a delightful read for those who are simply fascinated by all things miniature.

Picked this up on a whim at my local library. The world of miniatures is really fascinating. So many miniaturists put a TON of work into their projects, just as much if not more so than if they were building a regular house!

I enjoyed paging through all the pictures and I read most of the text, I only skipped the DIY bits that weren't especially relevant to me. Which brings me 'round to...there were quite a few DIY segments, which were maybe helpful to aspiring miniaturists, but all I know is that there is no way I could have made something from their instructions without having previously known how to make it. Except maybe the polymer bread. Either way, I almost felt like maybe the random DIY segments should have been included in another book, as they didn't really seem to have a place in this coffee table book.

An excellent book for anyone interested in miniatures or planning a miniature project. Full of useful tips, ideas and instructions for every aspect of your miniature world, from planning and installing lighting, creating wood panelling, flooring and roof tiles to making miniature food, clothes and carpets. Would thoroughly recommend.

So, full disclosure, I only got this book because a friend's work is in it ... the beautiful Rosmarinus shop. I wasn't sure what to expect and now that I have finished reading it I am not sure what it is really. It's a coffee table book - beautiful pictures, easy reading in small chunks etc. It's also a how to manual - useful tips and ideas for the beginner, and some helpful ones for the more experienced too. There's a bunch of stuff about 3D printing which I have no interest in but I am sure others do. The thing that bugged me a bit was references to various projects in the text with no guide as to where the associated picture may be ... and it could be in a different section. So, I liked it a lot, hence the 4 stars, but wish it was one thing or the other - a coffee table book or a how to guide.

Great pictures, though I would have liked to have seen the same houses pictures in the same area. Even having the same miniaturist's houses together. I do understand how they set the book up though, by categories of the theme of the houses. The DIY sections are helpful, but really only if you are a seasoned miniature DIY-er.

This book gave me lots of inspiration for my own dollhouses and I thoroughly enjoyed paging through it!
