This is a great book! 4.5 stars.

Quick overview: Princess Iyanka’s been in hiding since her and another kingdom fell to some power hungry barons. The barons hunt down people like her, that have gifts from the Creator. (Maybe a slight spoiler, but you find this out really early in the book) Victorin finds Iyanka, and she joins the resistance, and finds her place to help her people.

Okay, now I have to gush about Iyanka!

Iyanka is one of my all time favorite heroines. She’s not a kick butt and take names type of heroine. She’s not even that brave, but she’s real! Her fear and self doubt was so realistic. She didn’t become an amazing fighter or great with a sword, she wasn’t instantly brave or courageous, but it was so satisfying seeing her put aside her fears and be brave when it most mattered. Her compassion warmed my heart, and her faith in the Creator was well done!

Victorin was great too. I loved his patience with Iyanka. He never tried to change her, or make her feel bad for times that she was weak. He was so sweet to Iyanka, I just loved it!

I am normally the type the skims over the fight and battle scenes. But the author does them so well, that I was devouring every word! This book would make a great movie. The suspense was good, I was surprised several times, and had a hard time putting the book down.

The faith is done really well, nothing preachy, or in your face.

I did take off half a star, because I think it would have been nice to have a few chapters or a prologue showing how the kingdoms fell, and maybe get a few scenes of younger Iyanka and Victorin. And explained why and how Iyanka got to the barons castle. Then jump to 4 years later. Some things are explained somewhat. BUT not knowing didn’t really take away from the story and I still super enjoyed it.

I traveled through this book with the characters. As we had our adventure together I could see what they saw, smell what they smelled, feel what they felt. This is a book well worth reading!
