Rate this book
A sampler of the work of the best new writers of science fiction out there? A sci-fi selection box with a mix of hard (science) and soft (science) centres covering the spectrum of sub-genres? A brilliant anthology you'll find hard to put down? A must read for every sci-fi fan? All these things? We like to think so, and certainly with The Corona Book of Science Fiction we've tried to create something special - a multi-author sci-fi collection where each contribution embodies both great imagination and great storytelling, and which collectively covers a mix of themes from the fantastic to the topical, from AI to Z, all topped off with a last story so touching it has been proved to reduce grown men to tears. The Corona Book of Science Fiction also includes potted biographies of all its 16 writers and a list of author website and Twitter accounts to aid you should this book lead you to the discovery of a new favourite author. We think it might.

Do you like stories about AI and robots? Alien civilisations? Spaceships and colonisation of other planets? Communication technology? Epidemiology? Dystopian projections of current trends?

It's a long time since I read a collection of SF stories which I really enjoyed without coming across an old favourite from a previous anthology. Every one of these is a shiny new story. It quite took me back to the classic days of SF!

This is a carefully arranged selection with a great variety of styles, themes and sub-genres. There were a couple I found a little too metaphysical for my taste but at least I could enjoy their lyrical phrasing. There were plenty of 'hard' science stories and several written in that time-honoured style of throwing you straight in at the deep end and letting you gradually figure out the time, place and mores. And one story was written so well I didn't realise it was setting me up for a prat-fall I first encountered in a 1950s pulp magazine!

This is well-edited with tight concise stories and writer bios at the end of the book. I would have enjoyed a brief introduction to each story from the editor.

As a fan of anything Science fiction I was looking forward to reading this collection of stories and I wasn't disappointed!

This book covers a plethora of different themes and sub genres of the science fiction world. It opens up the opportunity to read work from different authors that you may not have read stories from before and each has their own voice and writing style. There are a few stand out stories however I enjoyed every single one and there are a few that I could see being expanded into full length novels.

I would highly recommend this collection of stories to fans of Science Fiction but also to those who have not tried this genre before.

This is a collection of 16 short stories by some very talented writers. I enjoyed every one of these varied tales. There’s humour, horror, dystopia, AI, time travel, romance, aliens, corruption, robotics, love and the greed inspired by empire here.

None of these stories disappointed me. There are variations in style, viewpoint, subject matter, theme and treatment in the anthology. Some are adventure stories, some are steeped in their themes, one or two are pure poetry, and all are satisfying. This is a great collection that fans of the genre, and those who harbour suspicions about its ability to get beyond space travel, will enjoy. Thought-provoking, amusing, and sometimes mysterious, this is a fine introduction to scifi for those unfamiliar with the breadth of the genre, and a satisfying read for those who love it. Really glad I bought this.

An enjoyable collection of Sci-Fi stories. Although all good in their own right, the stand out stories for me were Safe Chip, Ribbon World, First Contact, Geoffrey loses his voice, Bronzene and The Constellationist. Many of the tales paint a rather bleak picture of the future (perhaps inevitable in this day and age of concerns with climate change and rogue artificial intelligence) however they are all worth a read. A few would be worthy of being expanded into full novels. I would thoroughly recommend this collection to those who love sci-fi and those wanting to try science fiction for the first time.

It's such an honor to be among the talented authors featured in this anthology. A great mix of hard and soft sci-fi, ranging from nearly flash pieces to short stories, this offers a wonderful variety and showcase of the genre!

An enjoyable read with some interesting ideas and different takes on classic SF tropes such as first contact, artificial intelligence and time travel. As with any good anthology, it's the variety that gives life to the book — not just in terms of the story ideas but in the tone, narrative style and pacing. There's a good mix of humour, adventure, darkness, sense of wonder, all falling under the science fictional heading. Lots of different writing styles are on display and as with any anthology, some stories are bound to appeal to the reader more than others, which is as it should be. (Personal favourites included “The TASC Band” by Sue Eaton, “First Contact” by Tegon Maus and the excellent “Let The Bells Ring Out” by Morgan Parks. It's a fine showcase of rising talent.

This was a mix of different authors, writing styles, themes and subjects. Some I enjoyed more than others, but all were thought provoking in their way and enjoyable. I particularly like SafeChip TM and Godfrey Loses His Voice. Science Fiction encompasses dystopian future, aliens, space ships, romance and a bit of everything else. The book is one that you can dip in and out of, and is useful for finding new authors.
Will be passing to my 16 year old for him to enjoy!

A lovely collection of 16 short stories from (mostly) British authors with the occasional non-UK voice! This collection shows what is great about the short story medium - genuine short stories / vignettes - which bring a smile or a tear and are trimmed to the minimum level possible and still exist.

With no wasted space, this is a fun little anthology, and highly recommended.

Well, I am a bit biased because one of my stories is in here! That said, I am really honored to be alongside the stories in this book, and I think the writing is wonderful. Corona is fastidious about the quality of its anthologies and this one is no exception.

Worth a read just for "The Constellationist" if you ask me. While some of the stories were a little a little short for my preference, I enjoy discovering authors to hunt down in long form. A bit on the darker side, if that matters to you.

An enjoyable selection of stories. Very easy read which is a feat considering the book consists of 16 authors. This book celebrates short stories. No novelettes, No novellas - simply short to the point science fi stories. A refreshing read. Recommended

Very good collection of short sci-fi stories!!
...I've tried many others and so far this one stands out by a mile!!
If you like love death & robots series, then you will love this book!
They are very short and most of it had a twist at the end.
I just couldn't put it down! ...after many of the stories I've just stopped and was thinking about what I've just read, with a smile on my face! Make your mind wonder in those universes!
VERY good book!!!
