Don’t be fooled by the sweet puppy on the cover of this book. There is a dog, and he’s awesome. But instead of being a book about rescuing a stray from the Wisconsin wilderness, this is actually a tension-filled thriller about two women saving each other from a more dangerous predator.
Virginia is a complex and well-crafted character who makes for a great narrator. As a burned-out Hollywood wild-child, she’s staying in a remote cabin to get her act together and get clean away from the industry’s temptations. She’s having a grand pity party until a stray puppy (which she names Denzel) shows up at her place, followed soon by her owner, a sexy Nordic author named Sage. The heat sizzles between cagey Virginia and no-nonsense Sage, but they both soon discover someone else is in the woods with them, and they want to do them harm.
As a Midwestern girl myself, the snowy, cold setting feels right at home. Virginia is pretty new to the frosty winter scene, so seeing her navigate the unfamiliar weather is amusing. The snow and cold might be romantic in a way, but it can also be deadly, and the book shows both sides pretty well. Both Sage and I probably cringed eternally when she found Virginia outside in the snow with bare feet!
I really like Virginia is a layered, flawed protagonist, but I never warmed up to Sage the same way. Virginia always feels honest, even when she’s a little hard to handle, but Sage’s gruff and hostile exterior turns me off rather than endears me to her. And her backstory, though heartbreaking, is way over the top. It didn’t feel natural within the pretty realistic confines of the book. And though the romantic chemistry and sexual tension is definitely there, the love scenes have some awkward language and clunky pacing that could’ve been improved.
This is a short, atmospheric thriller that will give you the chills in more ways than one. But by the end, the romance itself left me a little cold.
This is a different kind of lesbian romance novel, where erotica elements are more present than the emotions related to a love between two people. This is the story of Virginia and Sage, both with some traumatic past and lots of personal issues. Virginia, a well-known actress, decided to take a break from the spotlight and drugs related issues, and move to a cabin in a remote place in Wisconsin in order to recover and find herself. Sage, a successful writer, was living a solitaire life in the same place, trying to recover from a hard past. They were brought together by Sage’s dog, named Denzel and Bartleby. While the dog only made the introduction, series of events, quite unusual and tragic I must say, made them realize that they rescued themselves from life-threatening events and offered them a possibility for a brighter future. A fun, heartwarming read, dark at times, steamy in big proportion. Does it bring a happily ever after? Will their sexual relationship go beyond intensive sexual moments, and love for the same cute little dog? Will they manage to move further from the dark point in life? Will they make peace with their past? These are all questions that I invite you to discover the answer on your own.
Type of reader: Readers of contemporary lesbian erotica.
Quotes from the book:
“This was what Denzel was doing the other day. He wasn’t watching anything in particular, just looking into the deep beauty of the world around him. How much time do we spend looking at our phones? Looking at our walls? Closing ourselves in, away from this great big wonderful wide world that we were born into?”
“He’s like a rescue dog, but so much more than that. I think he brought us together for a reason.”
“I had this revelation,” Virginia swallowed. “About me. About everyone, I guess.” Callie nodded. “We’re all just characters trying to play our scenes right,” Virginia licked her dry lips. “But the thing about life is that you can change the script without anyone throwing a shit fit.”
I was unable to actually finish the book... Is it even possible to act like absolutely-nothing-happened after you kill a person??? And I couldn't feel attraction between the MC's. Most of the parts of the story also seemed ridiculous... I apologise for this kind of review.. I really wanted to enjoy the book.
This book tells the story of two women, from different walks of life and both struggling with their own demons. They develop an unlikely romance, which had potential to be a very emotionally provoking reading experience. Unfortunately, I did feel like the two women had very little chemistry. The only things the two seemed to have in common were the fact that they were lesbians, and had dark pasts. I did like the main character Virginia, and felt that her character was very similar to the young starlet Hollywood types that we see in the media everyday.
The first sex scene between Sage and Virginia was written well, and the scene following their one night stand fit very well. At times I felt that certain parts of the story felt a bit off-putting and unnecessary. Certain moments had me wondering if I was reading a lesbian romance, or a supernatural thriller. The cover art also doesn't seem to fit well with the story. Without reading the description, I would've never guessed that this was a book about a lesbian romance. The dog was an important part of Sage and Virginia's bonding, which I understood. But not important enough to sell the story to readers who come across the book.
Overall, I thought this book was alright. Seems like a story that would make a decent lifetime network movie to enjoy on a weekend afternoon.
I really liked “Rescue.” I was about halfway through when I realized that the maybe there was something special about the dog. I don’t even know if I’m right but I think it’s almost a paranormal romance book at its core. Anyways the ghostly parts are kind of creepy. I definitely jumped a few times!
This was truly an amazing story with a bit of mystery. You will love the relationship between Sage and Virginia and their adorable puppy Denzel who brought these two together by chance.
Not my usual genre to read but thoroughly enjoyed this, so well written and a compelling storyline, nice bits of humour and... well, some rather saucy bits!
Truly an amazing read. It kept my attention and I felt like I was there with the characters. Loved the mystery throughout the book. The lil puppy had me smiling. All together a wonderful book.
