Literally Gone

Rate this book
It is a truth universally acknowledged that an overly inflated ego must be in want of the spotlight. When the actor set to play Mr. Darcy is found murdered in his dressing room, Pine Crest’s annual AustenFest is derailed. Pepper Brooks must set her pride and prejudice aside to differentiate between rumor and truth as she searches for the killer. Between running her new bookstore and trying to decide who is a Darcy and who is a Wickham, Pepper quickly finds that her story might not end as happily as those written by Jane Austen. Readers, this is the third book in a literary-themed cozy series. If walking into a bookshop makes you sigh contentedly and if you like a side of classic literature with your mysteries then you’ll love the continuation of this sweet cozy series. And if Austen’s not your jam, no worries, each book features a different classic author. ;) Happy reading!

Eryn Scott is the author of heartwarming cozy mysteries. Her novels feature close friendships and strong families because those are the most important things in her life -- a little humor doesn't hurt either.

She calls the Pacific Northwest home and doesn't plan on changing that anytime soon. Eryn loves to hike, horseback ride, knit, ski, and read. She believes musicals are the greatest thing since lattes, even though she's not particularly good at singing or dancing -- hey, a girl can dream, right?

Her first cozy mystery series, Pepper Brooks, is based on some of the greats in classic literature. Each book features a different author from Shakespeare to Austen. Eryn's newest series is set in a little town called Stoneybrook. The Stoneybrook Mysteries follow local jam-maker Hadley James as she solves mysteries in her town's year-round farmers market. From deceased knitters to sabotaged florists, these crafty citizens keep Hadley and her twin brother, a deputy sheriff, on their toes. Pebble Cove Teahouse Mysteries are great for readers who love a hint of paranormal with their mysteries. These books feature a tiny town tucked between craggy coastline and rocky shores with quirky characters of both the living and non-living variety. Look for new releases from all three of these series in 2022 as well as Eryn Scott's new cozy series.

Pepper Brooks finally has her own bookstore and it is the start of Pine Crest's AustenFest, a week-long tribute to Jane Austen. Tommy King, an arrogant Hollywood star, is back in town. Upon entering Pepper's bookstore, he abruptly announces that he is going to play Mr. Darcy in the play, Pride and Prejudice. The only problem is that the role was already promised to somebody else.

The next morning, when Pepper goes to deliver the script to Tommy, she finds a body in his trailer with a knife sticking out of his back. She initially thought it was Tommy, but he shows up moments later, very much alive. The corpse turned out to be Bonnie's husband, Will, who was originally scheduled to play the role of Mr. Darcy. Duncan Masters, Tommy's Manager, is also in town and had a big argument with Tommy the previous evening.

Who killed Will? Was he killed by mistake? Who was the intended victim, Tommy or Will? Can Alex and Pepper unravel the mystery and expose the murderer?

Eryn Scott has added a lot of twists and turns to this story, giving it a totally suprising ending.

Pine Crest's Jane Austen festival is about to begin and Pepper is in charge of ticket sales, being the new owner of the local bookstore she calls Brooks' Books. When former townie turned Hollywood actor, Tommy Kirk, barges his way into the store and announces he's going to play Darcy in the Pride & Prejudice play, Pepper is not amused. The play opens soon and already has a cast in place. How dare Tommy assume because he's a Hollywood star and the nephew of the Chamber of Commerce president he can do whatever he wants. Tommy demands Pepper handle the casting change in spite of her explanation that all she's in charge of is ticket sales. Pepper's job gets more demanding as ticket sales go through the roof thanks to Thomas. Pepper isn't happy but it's not her place to get involved. Thomas throws the entire festival into chaos with his demands and his assistant feels like quitting. Thomas has already fired his manager so what's next for this temperamental star? When Pepper enters Thomas's trailer to give him the play script, she's horrified to see him slumped over a table with a knife sticking out of his back. As Pepper freaks out, Thomas arrives on the scene-very much alive. The murder victim turns out to be Will, the actor slated to play Mr. Darcy before Thomas showed up. Pepper assumes the murder was a case of mistaken identity. The clues start to add up to a plot of a Jane Austen novel, if Jane wrote murder mysteries. Pepper is determined to let Alex handle this one and stick to being his girlfriend but she can't help but do a little digging on her own. Can she figure this one out and help Alex while his dad is away? What IS the status of her relationship with Alex in the first place and oh ew is her mom flirting with another man only 2 years after Dad's death? Pepper sure has her hands full and she thought life after graduation would be easier.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a book featuring Austen allusions and quotations is BOUND (pun intended) to please me. Yes I hate most fan-fiction but this isn't a book about Jane Austen or any of her characters. It's a book about literature lovers coming together to celebrate "Lady Jane." (What's with Lady? I've never heard her referred to that before and she certainly wasn't a Lady as in nobility). Sadly, I think the author only has some superficial knowledge of the stories based primarily on adaptations. The characters in this novel keep referring to Darcy as "brooding" which he's not- in the book. He is portrayed as brooding in the BBC adaptation. She also spells Bennet wrong, with two ts. Any true fan of the novel would know how to spell Bennet. However, the acknowledgement of the Darcy swimming/wet shirt scene not being in the book made up for that. I caught many Austen allusions. I read shades of Emma as well as (mainly) Pride and Prejudice and Pepper is still missing her dad, much like the Dashwood sisters. Alex misses his mom like Anne Elliot and Alex's mom seems to have had a softening influence on his dad, like Lady Elliot. I'm not sure all of the allusions were intentional. The ones that were are pointed out by Pepper.

The mystery kept me guessing for awhile. I did end up figuring it out. A late clue confirmed my suspicion. There are other, more subtle clues, that all is not what it seems. I was, however, surprised by all that went down. The dramatic conclusion is too impossible to believe. It requires more than suspension of disbelief. The romance subplot made me smile this time. NATURALLY I adore a hero who knows his Austen.

Pepper is back to being crazy and stubborn after trying to stay out of the investigation. She's still trying to figure out who she is as an adult and coming into her own. Pepper is kind and that blinds her to other people's faults sometimes. I liked how her relationship with her mom is developing. It's complicated because Pepper was SO close to her dad. Pepper and Alex are closer than ever and bond over his mother's favorite books. He's super sweet when they're alone but when he's working, he's still a tough nut and kind of a jerk. He's under a lot of stress because his dad is on vacation. So we're expected to believe a rookie cop would be partially in charge of a murder investigation. Um OK.... Like Pepper, I wince at Alex's treatment of his books but at least he's reading and enjoying what he's reading.

Nate Newton has grown on me. Pepper is trying harder to accept him for who is he is. I think he's trying to not be so weird but just is so socially awkward he doesn't know how. Liv is still around but stressed out by work. She always makes time for Pepper though and their friendship is mostly sweet. I had a serious problem with her comment about Thomas compromising Pepper. Do we live in 1813 by 1813 rules anymore? NO! That IS something I'd say but only jokingly. Like "Oh Pepper good thing we're not in 1813 England." It also shows an understanding of the Regency period I didn't expect Liv to have. Did Carson move in or is he just always around? He's not my type and I didn't think Liv would stick with him either. This time Hammy has a bigger role to play. She's a good judge of character, I think. She growls at people she doesn't like. Her Mommy doesn't use Hammy to investigate though.

Nepotism seems to rule Pine Crest. Phil King, President of the Chamber of Commerce, throws his weight around to get what he wants. Apparently no one can say no to him. What he wants now is his famous nephew starring in Pride & Prejudice. With an uncle like Sir Walter Elliot, it's no wonder Thomas has an ego the size of England. Thomas is super arrogant, rude, pushy and an egomaniac. He's demanding and expects way too much of his "servants". Yet, he's a loving big brother towards his sister Ana. Hmm who do we know who is a massive jerk in public yet runs to his sister's side when she needs help?! I thought Tommy might be more Frank Churchill than Darcy though. If Ana wasn't Tommy's sister she would be Jane Fairfax! Sweet, quiet and lovely, she was popular in high school but Pepper never really clicked with her. She also plays the piano well and attended Julliard. Yeah the author missed the allusions there. Tommy should not be her brother. Like Jane, Ana is back home and everyone is wondering what she is going to do next. They expect a lot of her and she's unsure she wants to follow the path that's been laid out before her. I sense some mental struggles there and that's normal for a young adult trying to find their way, especially one like Anan, from a prominent family who can't let her live her own life. I suspect she can relate to Jane Fairfax. (Not sure the allusions are deliberate or my own impressions).

Bonnie, the play's director, is in a tough spot. Her husband Will was the lead actor until Tommy showed up. She wanted to sell more tickets because sales were too low but she wants her husband to have a moment to shine. Will has a nasty temper. He doesn't handle the loss of his part easily and threatens Tommy. Yet it's Will who ends up dead. This was likely a case of mistaken identity. Who else might want Tommy dead? How heartbreaking for Bonnie to have to see her husband like that. They seemed to much in love. However, as secrets are revealed, it becomes clear that whichever man was the intended victim was a real Mr. Wickham and not Mr. Darcy.

Bonnie's 20-year-old assistant Sarah is in a good position to know things and reveal who might want Will dead, if anyone. She seems kind of silly and not very bright to me. Tommy's assistant, Karla, knows all too. She hates her boss and wants a new job. Could she have attempted to murder him and got Will instead? That seems unlikely given how well she knows Thomas. Karla is not a likable character. I didn't appreciate her revelations at all. I don't know if she's old enough to know better but she should learn to speak up and advocate for herself rather than do what she did.

The main suspect is Tommy's manager, Duncan. He comes to town just to argue with Tommy for suddenly firing him without warning. Tommy didn't give a reason, just posted a message on social media looking for a new agent. Sure that's unprofessional and rude. I can see why Duncan would be upset. He must have a hair trigger temper to be that angry and stab who he thought was Tommy in the back. He seems suspicious to the police and to Pepper as well. That is, until Pepper's mom hits it off with Duncan. Then Pepper sees a different side of him. Is he a talented actor and lying when he says he's not? He is a known liar after all. Pepper is hurt by her mom's sudden flirtation but mostly doesn't want her mom to be hurt. Their relationship is complicated. Mrs. Brooks is a high powered lawyer and not a Claire Huxtable lawyer mom. I think she threw herself into her work to ignore the pain of losing her husband. She's working her way back to her daughter after they talked about Pepper's issues and I think Pepper wants to be wrong about Duncan so her mom won't be mad at her and go back to ignoring her.

Frank, Alex's partner, doesn't know when to stop with the teasing. He is a nice guy but doesn't understand the newness and fragility of Alex and Pepper's relationship. What point does it serve showing Alex a gossip rag? It didn't help with the investigation and could have ruined a relationship Frank is very much in favor of.

There's so much going on in the mystery that the Jane Austen festival kind of takes a back seat. I want to see more of that. Even so, I enjoyed this Austenesque mystery. As a Janeite I will NOT be reading book 6. (This also means you, Kirk! AVOID AVOID!)

LOVE LOVE LOVE Eryn Scott.

Her ability to tie in a literary themed into each book is masterful. As a Jane Austen fan I was excited for this book, and it didn't disappoint. The parallels and lines throughout were perfection.

As Pepper gains her detective street cred, each of these mysteries seems to be ramping up in complexity. She is so relatable, and humble. Each time she thinks that she has it figured out, the blaring hole in her logic is there to ground her into realizing that she isn't the police.

The ending to this one had me. So many twists and drama galore. A little part of me didn't want the murder to be the culprit in the end. I can't wait to read the next installment. Watching Pepper become the adultier adult is like watching my own train wreck into adulthood. lol

You'll love this book if you are a fan of bookstore themed cozies, with light romance and a complex case.

I enjoyed this book. I don't know anything about Jane Austen (other than the name) so was a little bit worried that this book would be over my head with lots of quotes etc that meant nothing to me but I have listened to the rest of the books in this series so thought I would give it a go. Glad I did because it was a fun mystery and despite it being set around the theme of Jane Austen I had no problems following along and didn't find myself bogged down with quotes. The story focused on the mystery and Jane Austen just provided the reason for the gathering, so don't let that put you off. The characters are an interesting and a like able bunch. I liked the fact that for most of the book you were puzzling over who the intended target was and with the twist at the end I didn't guess the killer. It's a nice small town mystery that will have you wanting more.
Pepper has agreed to sell the tickets for the annual AustenFest at her book shop but she had no idea that by doing so she would put her life in danger. A local boy, Thomas, done good in the world of acting returns to star as Mr Darcy in the final performance for the festival but as the character had already been cast, tempers rise as demands are made. Then the original Mr Darcy is found dead in Thomas trailer. Pepper fears the wrong man was killed and the killer could strike again unless someone stops him. But the more she digs into the actor the more she questions if she is right. Yes he is obnoxious and demanding but is that really a reason to kill him? And what about the man that actually did die? Would anybody have a reason to kill him? Finding out means putting her life on the line as the killer tries to cover up there tracks.
I liked the narrator and thought she sounded right for the part of Pepper and her friends.

Pepper Brooks has gotten herself stuck in the middle of another mystery. This time a murder occurs during the Jane Austen festival and Pepper finds the body.

Thomas King, famous actor and former classmate of Pepper's, has returned to town and announced that he will be playing Mr. Darcy in the festival's production of Pride and Prejudice. This is news to everyone, including the actor, Will, who is already set to play the part. After the murder occurs a number of people appear to have motive and Pepper works to uncover the truth.

Pepper and Alex's relationship continues to grow as well. They are so sweet together, and he really listens when she shares her observations about the case. I liked, too, the inclusion of more about Alex's relationship with his mom and how much he misses her.

This series continues to serve up mystery with a side of humor and romance and I am looking forward to more of Pepper's adventures.

Thank you to the author for providing an advanced copy of the book for an honest review.

"Jane Austen in Pinecrest."
Looking for a lightweight, easy read murder mystery set amidst a Jane Austen small town festival with the protagonists clutching volumes of her works to the chest, grinning amicably and quoting well known lines from her stories? Look no further. This is the book for you.
When the husband of the director of the play of Pride and Prejudice, who had been about to star as Mr.D'arcy, is murdered, suspicion falls on several of the recent arrivals, not least the arrogant Tommy, Hollywood star who grew up in the town and had arrived, uninvited, to play D'Arcy himself.
Book shop owner, Pepper Brooks investigates, with a little help from new boyfriend, policeman Alex.

Narrated by bouncy voiced, Valley accented Anna Caputo, with warmth, expression and humour, this is certainly no literary masterpiece, not even a deep and confusing mystery to be solved, but it is enjoyable fun to brighter the empty hours. My thanks to the rights holder of Literally Gone, who, at my request freely gifted me with a complimentary copy via Audiobooks Unleashed.

4.5 Star review Literally Gone (Pepper Brooks Cozy Mysteries #3) by Eryn Scott

Audio Review:
I am loving the cozy mysteries written by Eryn Scott that I have read/listened too. The narrator Anna Caputo is new to me and I enjoyed her performance as she brought this cozy mystery to life for me.
This series is set in Pine Crest, Washington and I love that it is a small town. I enjoyed the literary references which I found entertaining as Pepper sifted through the clues. I envy Pepper Brooks owning her own book store, it is something I have always wanted to do.
This was a a book filled with enough danger, suspense secrets and clues to satisfy my detective spirit. The intrigue and suspense kept me on the edge of my seat as I listened to this story. There are several twists, turns and surprises in Literally Gone as Pepper, Olivia and Alex follow the clues and I have to say that I was surprised by the ending.

Good

It’s summer, in between graduating from her degree and starting her masters, Pepper Brooks is running her bookstore, and helping out with the Austen Festival in town.
Of course, it seems fairly normal that she ends up discovering a body, this time of the man set to play Mr. Darcy in the Pride and Prejudice play…

Pepper and Alex are getting closer, and enjoying their time together, so it’s only the discovery of a body that puts paid to it all, and with his father on vacation, Alex gets to be a bit more involved in the case.
It’s not Pepper’s skills as a literature buff that helps this time, but her contacts as one of the townies!

It’s another enjoyable tale in this cosy mystery series, which literature fans and cosy mystery fans will love.

I’ve fallen in love with the quaint town of Pine Crest, Washington and its quirky residents, especially, the loveable, Pepper Brooks, owner of the cozy bookstore, Brook’s Books. In Literally Gone, Pepper navigates her romantic relationship with a local cop, Alex Valdez (her very own broody Mr. Darcy), while working to keep her bookstore profitable. Meanwhile, in the midst of the town’s Jane Austen festival, she once again finds herself as amateur sleuth curious to solve a local murder case. Literally Gone is a delightful read sprinkled with familiar Austen quotes, character references and relationship comparisons.

I received an advanced copy of this book.

I really enjoy Eryn’s writing, her characters are lovable and the town in the mountains sounds idyllic. I do think Alex is the perfect man for Pepper, he always says the right thing and has helped her grow. I read the 2nd and 3rd books one right after the other because I couldn’t wait...household chores had to take a back seat while I read the next adventure in Pine Crest. And this serial killer had me guessing almost to the end, so many twists and turns, I love a good mystery. I definitely recommend this book, you will love it, too!

Darcy or Wickham

A return to our favourite literally series. AustinFest is derailed when the actor play Darcy is found dead. Was he really Darcy or more Wickham? Who killed him? Our heroine finds herself investigating not only for her own peace of mind but also her mother's. Great little plot, nice twists and wonderful quotes that really amp up the romantic angle of this book. The characters are now really growing and I must admit I am now a real fan of this series. Can't wait for the next book.

Literally Gone

Another good cozy mystery in the Pepper Brookes series. Set in a college town this book focuses on Pepper as a business owner while she is off during the summer. From the last book we know she is going back to school for a master’s degree but that must be reserved for the next book. The Jane Austen fair figures prominently in this book and provides the scene of a murder. It did drag a bit but the author brings it back up to speed and finishes it off with another surprise ending.

Each book is better than the last.

I read this 3rd book in the series in 2 days and now I plan to get the 4th book. I'm 69 and an Agatha Christie die hard fan. I love British murder mysteries but these books have made me a fan. I hate lusty romance novels and these books remind me of the sweet, innocent romances of older books. Heck, I think I'm in love with Alex! On to book 4. I really hope there are more to come.

Another great romantic little cozy mystery story!

The characters are developing so well in this series. I really enjoyed reading the first two books in the series. I enjoy reading the stories so much that I am binge reading through them.

This was a well-written, entertaining, fun and easy read. If you enjoy a good mystery with a young adult as the heroine, then this is a book you will not want to miss reading.

Pepper is growing into a wonderful character. I'm sure now that her boyfriend Alex is on the local police force, we will see a lot more of murder mystery solving Pepper and best friend Liv. I love the literary connections throughout the novel. Last book was Hemingway themed. This time the focus was on Jane Austin. Can't wait to see who is next!

I really liked this one, probably more than the first two books in the series. In this book, we see how Alex and Pepper’s relationship is progressing. I liked that Alex and Frank solve a case without the involvement of Alex’s cop dad. Pepper’s dog Hammy is adorable. I liked the secondary characters too, even Tommy who was hard to like at first. The Jane Austen references were so much fun.
