Phoebe Clay, a multi-lingual espionage agent for the US government, has to return home from her assignment in Sri Lanka on an urgent rescue mission. Her Great Aunt Helen’s text warned her to trust no one – but the only “emergency” waiting was that her Aunt Helen’s cat was missing! Instead of meeting her Aunt Helen at her home, she was texted to come next door and not to wake the owner!
Her Aunt Helen was dressed in black with her face and neck greased to hide her skin. She swore that the elderly Tucker Harrington had her cat and she refused to come out of the house until she searched it. His grandson, Morgan, was out on a date and the elderly Harrington was asleep. They searched all but the basement before a police detective, Morgan’s date Janet, burst in with a gun, followed closely by a tall, handsome man in a black coat – Morgan. Phoebe couldn’t keep her eyes off of him. She and her Aunt were locked in a cell and Phoebe suggested they get a lawyer. But there was no need – Morgan was Aunt Helen’s lawyer and would get them out when he was ready to do so! Phoebe was starting to think Aunt Helen set up this whole thing, just so she could meet Morgan and steal him away from the detective whom she obviously disliked! Strange, but even Morgan and Janet’s body language did not show signs of a close relationship.
Phoebe was seriously considering moving home permanently, but first she had to finish her last mission. She had found a paper she needed to translate and turn over to her boss. She had trouble with one part of the translation, and sent it to a professor who had lived in Sri Lanka and could translate it to confirm her findings. What was on the paper, and was it critical to her mission?
I really loved reading this story, but I didn’t really think of it as suspenseful, exciting, or a mystery. It was, however, a good falling-in-love story that was slow and enticing and probably a surprise to the couple! Regardless of how this book is classified, it really is a good one and very enjoyable.
