Also invented the precursor to the Iron Lung. Who knew?

At 10 met a bloke called Alexander Graham and liked the sound of it so adopted Graham as his middle name.

Died of diabetes in his 50s.

His father invented Visible Speech which helped the deaf talk, and his grandfather was also a speech therapist of sorts.

Wow! I was trying to write a short summary about Alexander's life based off this book but. . .that's not happening. His life was more eventful then I could've ever imagined. His greatest life achievements all in this tiny book? It's seriously amazing how the author can write the major facts and make it entertaining! Totally read this if your interested in learning about Alexander Graham Bell! : )

I have no words to describe what I felt as I read this book about Alexander Graham Bell's life and work, so I'll quote here some excerpts from the book: "Alexander Graham Bell was an inventor, a teacher, a husband, a father, and a friend. He would tell his students as well as his own children: "Don't keep forever on the public road, going only the other like a flock of sheep." Alec thought it was important to follow your own interests and see where they would take you. "Leave the beaten track occasionally and dive in the woods. Every time you do so you will be certain to find something that you have never seen before."" (Pages 99 and 100)

I always enjoy the "Who Was" books. While written at a great level for upper-elementary students, I always learn things about the subject. I like that this one didn't focus solely on the telephone, although a few chapters are dedicated to the device and the battle between inventors that ensued. The book highlights Bell's true passion: helping the deaf communicate with the world, as well as his other inventions--the first metal detector and a device that would eventually become the Iron Lung, among others.

Who was Alexander Graham Bell by Bonnie Bader was a fantastic book. I really liked how he created the telephone and got a patent but other people/inventors still tried to say that they invented the telephone. I also liked how he helped people who were deaf use sound waves to start listening.

Aleck or Alec was an inventor for many things but his most famous invention was the telephone. When he was a young boy he wanted to teach kids how to learn the Alphabet when kids are deaf. His first son died because of a lung failure.

I recommend this book to kids in grades 6-8 because it has some hard words but it is very interesting.

Did you know that Alexander Graham Bell's amazing invention? The telephone, stemmed from his work on teaching the deaf? Both his mother and wife were deaf. Or, did you know that in later years he refused to have a telephone in his study? He is the inventor of one of the greatest creations of humans beings. Without this invention, we cant connect with your families and friend across the globe or across town that easily. This book will fascinate you and I hope you can enjoy this book!

105 pages. Very interesting biography of the man who invented the telephone and so much more. It really gives a reader the inside story of his life and all his accomplishments. I learned a lot. I think it would be a great book for reports or recreational reading on famous people. Highly recommended for Grades 4-5.

I chose this book because I wanted to learn about an inventor's life today. Alexander Graham Bell was named after his grandfather and father but added "Graham" to his name when he was eleven. His childhood was in Scotland most of his teenage hood was in London. He moved to the United States to teach at several schools about a special way on how deaf people can communicate easily. After, he started on working on a multi-message telegraph when he was on the verge on creating the telephone. His business partners Mr. Hubbard and Mr. Sanders quickly patented the first ideas on the telephone two hours before someone else tried patenting the same ideas to be theirs. Once Alexander invented the telephone, he married Mabel Hubbard, Mr. Hubbard's daughter, and he started testing on long distance calls. They were successful and made the Bell Telephone Company. The book surprised me because I never knew much about Alexander's life.

I had no idea I loved Alexander Graham Bell so much!! I read a book about Pres. Garfield that mentioned him so I got this book for my 2nd grqder to read for her nonfiction book report.

Here are a few things I had no idea about, but love:
His mother and wife were deaf
Most of his life was dedicate to helping the deaf
He would talk softly to his mothers forehead and she could hear him (Bone conduction hearing!)
He and his father taught deaf people to speak
He met with Helen Keller when she was young and helped her to find a tutor that could help her. They were lifelong friends.
His work with helping the deaf helped him in inventing the telephone, (working with vibrations and how they work.)
He invented a metal detector
He invented an audiometer to test hearing
He invested a precursor to the iron lung
He was interested in flying and created kites
He was president of and helped grow National Geographic after his father in-law started it.

Amazing. I had no idea.

I love the "Who was..." collection books! These books are very informative about people from history. It gives young readers a book full of information about who they were, it is a biography. This one, in particular, is about Graham Bell who was the inventor of the telephone and on top of that he taught deaf people how to speak. His inventions helped advance society today, everyone uses the phone and no there is a whole more technology to help people communicate with the deaf. I love the layout of these books it shows them in different settings they were typically found in and different tools. I enjoyed the timeline at the end it helped to tie everything the book covered all on one snapshot. I think this book is very useful in the classroom for grades 2-5!

An inspiring quote:
“ Leave the beaten track occasionally and drive in the woods. Every time you do so you will be certain to find something that you have never seen before”.
- Alexander Graham bell.
It’s wonderful how each time I need a motivation or a realization of the brilliant minds I would just pick a book out of the series. Love how short are the books tho enough to deliver the story.

Hi everyone! It's Ariel here, and today I’m going to tell you about a really interesting book called "Who Was Alexander Graham Bell?" by Bonnie Bader.

This book is all about Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone. Did you know that Bell's work on the telephone started because he was trying to help people who were deaf? His mom and his wife were both deaf, and he wanted to make their lives better.

It's really cool to learn that even though he invented the telephone, he didn’t want one in his study later in life! This book has lots of fun facts like that, which makes it super interesting.

The story of Bell is amazing and will fascinate young readers who are curious about how modern technology began. The book has great pictures and easy-to-read chapters that make learning about history fun.

My favorite part was learning how Bell never gave up on his ideas, even when things were tough. If you like stories about inventors and how things we use every day were created, you will really enjoy this book.

"Who Was Alexander Graham Bell?" is a fantastic read for anyone who loves history and technology. I learned so much and can’t wait to read more books in this series!

Happy reading!

Who Was Alexander Graham Bell? by Bonnie Bader and illustrated by David Groff is one of the books in the award-winning "Who Was..." series focused on the youth market of readers but also interesting for adults. This one is about the life of Alexander Graham Bell whos mother and wife were both deaf and that may have contributed to his interest in his work teaching the deaf. He was also obsessed with technology and the idea of transmitting sound through electrical lines. Eventually this resulted in his invention of the telephone. This book is an inspiring and illustrated biography and is perfect for young middle-grade readers with Black-and-white line drawings throughout, sidebars on related topics, a timeline, and a bibliography to enhance readers' understanding of the subject. Written primarily for the youth market it is also an excellent way for anyone to get an overview about a specific famous individual or moment in history or as a quick refresher of basic facts if you've already read other books and just want a summary.

I was impressed with the amount of detail in this book. I appreciated that there are pictures, but it is a lot of information. I think the upper elementary students would appreciate this book the most. The timeline at the end helped to understand Alex's life and also the progression of the telephone. Throughout the book there are several pieces of information about entrepreneurship, which could be helpful when teaching students about that. I think having a set of these books in the classroom would be great resources for students. There could be a unit on biographies where each student picks one of them and completes a project on their person. For this specific book, I would have the students write a letter to Alex detailing where the invention of the phone has lead us today. They can express the importance of his work while detailing all the advancements that have happened since his time. Also, since Alex invented several items, the students could brainstorm an invention of their own. They can create it, receive a patent (from the teacher), and market it to their classmates.

Who was Alexander Graham Bell? by Bonnie Bader is small biography about about the inventor of the telephone, the iron lung, and many more. Some people might think he only invented the telephone, but in reality, he invented much more. Most might have never heard of his inventions, but he's still a well known factor. He started his life as a Scottish boy growing up with his slightly deaf mother and an underestimating father. Alex loved exploring and learning about things. When he was young Alex was forced to live in London for a short period of time with his grandfather. Alex didn't like how strict his grandfather was about "dressing up". He had to wear a suit and a top hat with a cane. When he was older he got interested in a sound box and later on invented the telephone. Later, his child died due to breathing problems, which concluded him to invent the iron lung.

"Who Was Alexander Graham Bell" is a great short, informational book about Alexander Graham Bell. I loved this book and it would be great to utilize in a classroom setting. It lets you know important information about Bell that would aid in a project. It is also a fairly short book that could be read quickly. This book along with the others in this series are all great for the classroom and just for something short to read.

Phones play a huge role in society today and this man created the first telephone. Readers will be able to read about how Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone and where the idea came from. Without this man the communication in this world would be a lot different. I think this invention is very important in history and could be an inspiration to many.

Alexander Graham Bell was a very busy inventor who's goal was to help give deaf people the ability to communicate with others. His mother taught him how to play the piano even though she was deaf. She used an ear trumpet to hear the vibrations in the piano. This inspired him to invent several inventions including the telephone. This is a good synopsis of his life and a good beginning on learning more about his role in the history of the United States.

I love this series! I've read many of them, and this was a great one. I didn't know much about AGB beyond his name and that he invented the telephone, so I was intrigued by his interest in helping the Deaf. I sure don't understand the science behind it all, even though this is written for young readers, but I'm impressed with how he was able to put it all together.

My oldest son (10) read this himself, and I read it to my 7yo son, since we were studying AGB in homeschooling.

In this book you will know everything you would like to know who was Alexander Graham Bell and how he invented the telephone, and he learnt the piano from his mum which was deaf and he taught deaf people how to talk using some type of language. To invent the phone he had to go through this incredible journey.

Glad I finally got to read a "big head" biography! This one was interesting and covered all the bases. I didn't love it for its fascinating biographical readability but I know it will get the kids started on the form.

We loved this one. It was great to learn something not about soccer. My son and I can take turns reading paragraphs now. Alexander seemed like a nice guy, and I had no idea about his non-telephone inventions or his work with the deaf.

It is interesting to see and use things now that Alexander Graham Bell invented. This book is fascinating, and you learn some interesting historical facts about this inventor and how he shaped some of what we use on a regular basis, but also may take for granted.
