Or, voici que les nefs appelées à sillonner les routes stellaires disparaissent de manière inexplicable à peine sorties des usines. Les industriels sont aux abois, d’autant que bientôt, l’ensemble des échanges du Système pourrait se trouver menacer. Quel terrible mystère scientifique se cache derrière ces manigances, et surtout, au bénéfice de qui ? Des questions auxquelles le capitaine Futur va devoir répondre, et vite, car le temps joue contre lui…

Figure centrale de l’Âge d’or de la science-fiction américaine, scénariste de quantité de comics, dont Superman et Batman, Edmond Hamilton (1904-1977) est considéré comme l’un des inventeurs du space opera. Avec la série du Capitaine Futur, développée entre 1940 et 1951, traduite dans le monde entier mais plus connue en francophonie sous le nom de Capitaine Flam suite à son adaptation en dessin animé par la Tôei Animation dès 1978, il jette les bases d’une sous-culture populaire appelée à connaître un succès planétaire sous ses incarnations cinématographiques modernes — Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica et autre Star Trek.

About the author

Edmond Moore Hamilton was a popular author of science fiction stories and novels throughout the mid-twentieth century. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, he was raised there and in nearby New Castle, Pennsylvania. Something of a child prodigy, he graduated high school and started college (Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pennsylvania) at the age of 14--but washed out at 17. He was the Golden Age writer who worked on Batman, the Legion of Super-Heroes, and many sci-fi books.

Also wer mal so richtig authentisches Pulp-Feeling der 40er Jahre mitbekommen möchte, dem sei diese Neuausgabe von Golkonda sehr ans Herz gelegt.

Nicht nur ist die Geschichte herrlich antiquiert, pathetisch, schlicht, naiv und macht deshalb viel Spass (sofern man bereit ist, sich auf dieses literarische Niveau einzulassen).

Diese Ausgabe ist darüber hinaus extrem liebevoll gestaltet. So ist zeigt das Titelbild die Zeichnung vom Originalcover der Erstausgabe von 1941 und der Innenteil enthält Zeichnungen aus dieser Ausgabe. Das Sahnehäubchen jedoch am Schluss: Im Anhang werden einige „Extras“ der Originalausgabe abgedruckt. Schwerpunkt bildet hierbei eine Leserbriefseite mit dem Titel „Under Observation“. Die Fans werden hierbei vom „Moderator“ dieser Seite in ironisiert-überzogenem Pulp-Stil durch die Briefe geführt. Und es gibt viel zu diskutieren, denn „das Postabteil in der Zeitkapsel ist auf dieser Reise eng bepackt mit Raumtelegrammen und Ätherblitzen von Euch Raketenrecken!“. Deutschen Nerds meines Alters dürften hier sofort die Fan-Kontakt-Seiten in den alten Williams-Marvel-Comics einfallen, in denen ein „Stan Lee“ kernige Ansprache an die Fans hielt.

Und so bekommt man unglaublich Lust, gleich zum nächsten Band zu greifen, denn wie wir erfahren, „die nächste Ausgabe von CAPTAIN FUTURE bietet ein phantastisches Meisterwerk, das so selten ist, wie eine binäre Verdunkelung“!!!

Otro divertido caso del Capitán Futuro y sus hombres del mañana, en este caso centrado en los misteriosos robos de naves espaciales. No baja el ritmo en ningún momento, como buena historia pulp, y deja un regusto agradable.

Aparte de la historia principal y los complementos, hay dos relatos que también tienen su interés. Creía que acabaría cansándome de la saga, pero de momento ofrece suficientes dosis de acción e intriga para mantenerme enganchado, se nota que Hamilton conocía su oficio.

Lo recomiendo para los seguidores de la Space Opera. Para los no iniciados: si te gusta Star Wars, probablemente disfrutes de este libro.

Captain Future was a pulp hero of the 1940s and boys of the time were the target audience so you can't really compare it fairly to current space opera works, but rather to other such fiction that was contemporary such as the work of Jack Williamson or "Doc" Smith. Sure, by modern standards the science was silly, the characters were clichéd, and the plots were juvenile, but at the time of their publication they had a big following from fans that took the stories very seriously, and it served to help shape the face of the field today. Having said all of that, this wasn't one of my favorite stories that I've read in the series so far. The android and the robot characters each have adopted pets that seem to be unnecessary distractions, and the plot hinges on some coincidences that are just a little too hard to buy. At one point a character is killed when a tiny atomic bomb that's been concealed in a spy-button is remotely triggered, but no one else in the same room is hurt by the blast.... they must have used really, really tiny atoms with a small blast radius, right? It was a fun romp, as always, to see Curt and the Futuremen save the day, but it really wasn't up to the usual standard.

Nueva entrega del Capitán Futuro, ligeramente mejor que las anteriores. Se trata de alguien que roba prototipos de naves, y como todos los de esta serie diversas peripecias de grupos de personajes en distintos planetas. En este episodio, una interesante carrera estelar, pero solo a través de nuestra estrella solar, con distintos tipos de prototipos, Futuro y Otho compiten en una de las naves. Complementa este episodio Hielo, FOB, Marte un interesante cuento que nos hace que pensar.

Well, maybe, no, it’s not perfect…per se…but I sure had a lot of fun with this novel. What more are we looking for with novels like these?

The pulp era SiFi hero, Captain Future is a more scientific version of Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon. He and his band of Futuremen are special criminal investigators for the Earth government and are similar to Doc Savage and his band of helpers. Great reads, recommended
