Vincent K. Hunanyan (May 21, 1991) (Armenian: Վինսենթ Հունանյան) is the Armenian-born author and poet.
His debut work, Black Book of Poems is a poetry collection touching on the subjects of loss, love, pain, happiness, depression and abandonment.
The collection was released on May 5th, 2020 and has been an Amazon bestseller for over 3 consecutive years.
His second work, I Wasn't Crying Over You was published on September 21, 2017, and is a collection of short stories, mainly based on the author's childhood and transition into adulthood.
His third work, Black Book of Poems II, got released on September 1, 2020.
Hunanyan's passion for writing began at the age of 13, when the author, together with his childhood friend worked on rap lyrics they would record at home and release online. In time, those lyrics turned into poetry.
Though Hunanyan graduated UCLA in 2015, it wasn't until two years later that he would release his debut, accepting a sales job to "improve his communication skills" until finally quitting at the end of 2016.
The idea for Black Book of Poems was conceived after the author separated from his college girlfriend and decided to pursue a career in writing.
The title for the collection comes from the lyrics of the song, Nobody Home by Pink Floyd.
Hunanyan is currently working on his full length novel set for release later this year!
Ex and Why: ‘If you are born an X and Y, Then predetermined shall you die. ‘
Armenian born author Vincent Hunanyan earned his degree in creative writing from UCLA. He now lives and writes in Stockholm.
It is refreshing when a new poet offers an explanatory note about his art before the poems begin - from his stance we are more tied to his mission: ‘On my twenty-sixth birthday I was in Vietnam, having a heart attack. It was also the day I published, Black Book of Poems I. Having quit my sales job to heroically dedicate my life to this craft, I picked my birthday to be the release date for my first, official work. Frankly, I had absolutely no expectations publishing Black Book of Poems; I knew the struggles of self-publishing and that a book (regardless of its quality) was never guaranteed sales. I told myself that if I could impact one reader out of a thousand, or even ten thousand, nothing else mattered. I returned from the hospital at sunrise (my heart was apparently healthy), published the book and went to sleep. The rest, as they say, is history. As I mentioned in my previous preface, there is no magic formula to understanding poetry. Poetry is not math- it’s not perfect, nor precise. You don’t “understand” it intellectually. I believe your connection with a good poem is more spiritual than anything. Anyone forcing their interpretation of a poem on you is usually full of shit. Unless it’s the author himself. But then, what’s the point in writing the piece in the first place. The quality of a poem is not tied to the complexity of the words or the symmetry of the rhymes or meter. I think the best poems are simple but profound; free from sentiment, yet somehow heartbreaking. I have poems I recite until this very day that I’ve carried in my mind for years. When I read these poems for the first time, more often than not, I don’t “understand” them, but there is something about them that elevates my heartbeat or sends shivers down my spine; and as with any great piece of artistic creation, the longer I look the more I see. My soul feels something my intellect cannot grasp. It takes time until that which you connect with metaphysically becomes fixed and you can express it intellectually. Though, typically, this doesn’t happen. So, don’t fear poetry and don’t overthink it. And if you don’t “get it”, you don’t get it. That’s all. Come back to it and try again if you think you might have missed something. All great art takes time to truly appreciate and resonate with. That’s all there is to it. Unlike the previous collection in which most poems have a rhyming scheme, the style within these pages will vary. P.S. As poetry can be very lyrical, for best experience, read the poems out loud. It will also engage more of your senses.’
A few examples of this impressive poet follow:
It, Too Shall Pass Every man must bear his cross, Through pleasure, pain and loss. In empty fields of shallow graves, Untainted souls will take my place.
And in your final, fading day, Forget me not, my friend, I pray. No pain can stay, no pleasures last, Cry not, my love, it, too, shall pass.
PTSD (to be read in one breath)
Free World Leaders calmly selling Trigger happy soldiers, raping Beaten children, hungry, crying Broken veterans keep trying Ravished villages collapsing Orphaned children, hungry dying Propaganda keeps corrupting Brightest minds of my generation Feeble-minded freedom-fighters Public pressure, public panic Hunting season is upon us
Now your arguments don’t matter, My opinions reign true.
Sensitive, probing and holding thoughts that speak to each of us in our own needs, Vincent has succeeded in this second collection of poems that his is a voice worthy of our following.
Black Book of Poems II by Vincent K. Hunanyan is a thoughtful collection of poetry that made me stop and think. While I didn't relate to every poem, I did enjoy reading this collection. I recommend this to fellow poetry lovers who enjoy modern poetry, and yes, enjoyed reading the first collection Black Book of Poems.
Author again brings honesty and light to various issues being faced today. Mental health, love, war, etc. I personally love the broken way the poems are written. My favorites being PTSD Fix Me Confined and Free.
"All great poetry takes time to truly appreciate and resonate with. That's all there is to it. That's the best way I can put it". V.K. Hunanyan
And he did! He succeeded again! The Black Book of Poems II surpassed all expectations! A mature book, a thoughtful collection of true poetry from the soul which truly reveal Hunanyan’s talent as an extremely gifted writer. This creative, intellectual way of poems are full of emotion, heartache, suffering, love, and joy. This emotional depth inspires self-reflection. The beautifully rhymes of his artistically words make Hunanyans poems so classy and enjoyable.
This book really was an amazing work of art, written with fantastic classic lyric grace: honest, real and emotional expressive.
There is a sadness in her eyes; She does not love me anymore, The spark is gone- Her eyes are cold Her shoulders -drooped Her head, like so.
And there is nothing I can do; She does not love me anymore.
This is a wonderful collection of amazing poetry from the soul , a great read full of emotion, heartache, love, and joy. Each poem held meaning. Black Book of Poems reflects the thoughts and feelings of the poet. Vincent Hunanyan speaks to individuals as well as the general audience. I was extremely happy with my purchase of this book and I find myself coming back for a reread and enjoy each new perspective.
Absolutely beautiful work, very expressive and amazing read!
"Writing is a lonely work" is just brilliant!
Writing is a hungry work That feeds your inner beast Only fools devote their lives To such ungrateful deeds.
Writing is a lonely work (Does loneliness subside?) In every artist , troubadour The will to write must rise and roar!
A wonderful and reflective collection of poems touching you from within so deeply. Rhyme all of these passionate, beautifully expressive words and use of these words in Hunanyans poems is brilliant. Every poem sounds as a melody, astonishing of their depth and humanity. I am absolutely in love with these powerful poems expressing the author's heart-felt reflections on the mundane events in life. Beautifully written work of art, definitely WORTH reading.
Absolutely brilliant.

I have never loved a collection of poetry more in my entire life. This was so passionate and beautiful, what an incredible book! Hunanyan really touched me deeply with this incredibly work of art.
This absolutely stunning collection of words. His words are so powerful and so full of emotion. Hunanyan's words will hit you straight in the heart. I'm feeling so many emotions I can't articulate it. It brought me to tears more than once. This collection of poems concerns pain, trauma, war, death, love, loss, healing with clarity and insight. If you enjoy poetry, I recommend this book.
Will definitely be rereading many times over.
My One True Love
My one true love is but a glimpse Of blissful time, now long, long past As such, I think what could have been And whether we could truly last
We love the only way we know Relentlessly and impromptu Lust was love and love was new She has moved on, and I, must, too.
The Black Book of Poems Part 2 is one of many poetry books that leave a lasting mark on me long after I’ve finished reading it. I sat there after reading all the passages and realized that they weren’t words on pages, they were actual real life images of what the world is currently like. We let love get loose and recognize later on that it has passed away. The decisions our world leaders are making, the choices we all make on the daily for ourselves and our babies, everything is connected. If you have an eye or an ear for poetry, check out his work. Pure, real, and ready for the world to see it.
First of all, THANK YOU Vincent for the kind gesture you had by sending me your book!!
This book felt so special, it speaks of love of course, but also about war, society issues I believe. Is the kind of book that made me stop and think. I was attracted with the first book, but then this one happened and boom, my favorite so far, I’m glad I came accross with this author someway because I believe he’s the kind who speaks honestly and without it being forced.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
I have previously read Black Book of poems 1 by Vincent K Hunanyan and really enjoyed it so I jumped at the chance to read the second book and it didn't let me down.
What I loved about this book was how many of the poems were relatable to what is going on around us in the world today - politics, war, despair etc and found many of the poems very thought provoking and real.
I really enjoy Vincent's poetry and am so glad I got chance to read yet another fabulous book of poetry.
This collection consists of over 50 poems that I've been reading for a while now. And even though I didn't relate to every poem I did however enjoy a good number of them.
At those that I didn't quite get I can always come back to at a later stage (as advised by the author). The topics range from love, loss, politics/current affairs and self.
One poem that kinda said "You still haven't read your copy of 1984 and I see you" was "1984":
Welcome to the Truman Show Nineteen eighty-four Go to bed comrade, sleep tight We will watch you in the night.
We will watch you in the day You can stay --- but not away You can run but you can't hide Until the day you lose your mind.
A really enjoyable little black book of poems. I'd recommend it to anyone who is out there collecting poetry and any lover of poetry really.
Thank you @Jonathanballpublishers for trusting me with this copy. Its something I can always go back to for a quick reread!
Excellent, impressive read with high re-readability.I loved the RHYMES. I have enjoyed each verse like a fine melody, It is always amazing when poetry has rhymes. A MUST READ for all poets, writers, and lovers of words. The use of the words is brilliant. There's a reason it's so popular. Never stop expressing, Mr Hunanyan, Keep being awesome!
I have received this title via NetGalley and publishers in exchange for an honest review This collection of poems was like none I have read before. You could feel the author's passion in every line he wrote. While I did not relate to every poem in this collection, I could understand the value behind each one. The one issue I had when I picked this up (through no fault of the writer, I did not dock a star for this) was that it was advertised as having multiple authors, not just one.
I don't understand all of the poems in this book, but the ones I do understand resonate with me so much. Overall I enjoyed reading this book and really appreciate how these poems are formatted visually. This is definitely going to be a book I come back to over the years.
for some of the subject matter this was oddly whimsical. it's very lyrical and some parts of kind of funny. maybe it's the way they're written. i'm used to poetry being either super vague and romantic in a way or super straight forward. this is downright shakespearean
We need more poetry like this. The emotion The structure The rhymes It was all there. I felt connected to the poems like they were my own. I felt like I was feeling those things while writing them. I felt every emotion the poems was written to evoke. Very good job. I'll definitely be reading more from this author.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was a short read, made up of a collection of poems - this is a genre I haven’t really explored before, but after thoroughly enjoying this book I definitely will seek out more poetry collections in the future.
Whilst I didn’t connect with all of the poems in this book, I enjoyed reading them all, and I felt connected to the author as some of the poems have a lot of emotion behind the words.
I would love to listen to an audiobook of this, and I hope to read the first black book of poems soon!
I really enjoyed the the book. I did find that this second run had far more of a political and love theme than the first book. But it was in no way an in your face propaganda push. Well worth a read in my honest opinion.
I got an eARC of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. For those of you who read my review (like literally no one) of the first book, “Black Book of Poems,” you would have seen that I almost hated the first book had it not been for the short stories thrown in. And then I read his second book published, “I Wasn’t Crying Over You,” a short story collection and I fell in love with Hunanyan’s writing. That wasn’t a poetry book so I am giving his poetry a second chance.
Black Book of Poems: Part II did for me what the first book did for everyone else. I am in awe of his work once again. I want to reread this for the first time again so if anyone wants to knock me out with a baseball bat you’re more than welcome. This book covers a lot of the same topics as the first book did but with a less “rhym-y” scheme, which is what made me dislike it a bit. I cannot wait for more of Hunanyan’s writing.
PTSD (to be read in one breath) Free World Leaders calmly selling Trigger-happy soldiers, raping Beaten children, hungry, crying Broken veterans keep trying Ravished villages collapsing Orphaned children, hungry, dying Propaganda keeps corrupting The brightest minds of my generation Feeble-minded freedom fighters Public pressure, public panic Hunting season is upon me
Now your arguments don’t matter My opinions reign true
I liked the book 1 more than this one. Here are few of my favorite quotes from this book:
"I am confined to my own mind And can’t escape these prison walls For what I am is what I see And what I see I’ll always be."
"Writing is a hungry work That feeds your inner beast Only a fool devotes his life To such ungrateful deeds. "
"I can’t go on; I must give in The road’s too long and filled with pain I cannot see the finish line Nor can I force my feet to bear Darkness falls; all hope grows dim And I lose heart and weep."
"I must go on; I can’t give in No roads shall run forever! Through my fears and meager sleep I must persist and persevere I must keep on for all the pain I have endured along the way So when the end is drawing nigh I might stand worthy of its time. "
So as we know Poetry is personal, subjective, different for everyone. I enjoyed this work, I give it a solid 3/5. There are times it was lacking but then picked back up.
The book is made of gorgeous short and long poems that are sure to teach and touch the core of the reader. The poems are very well compelled and have a good flow.
