"Fascinating story and vividly told..." WRITERS' DIGESTIn the early spring of 1881, seventeen-year-old Molly returns home from Boston to find her brother Jake missing and presumed dead, and her mother out of her mind. Twenty-year-old Jacob McCray left Grenada County, Mississippi in the fall of 1879. A young mulatto, hesitant to take on his sister's fiery ways of handling life, he chooses to use his numbers-sense, music and poetic ways to get by. Still hurt and unsure of why his Pa left, Jacob searches for a better life for himself, his Ma and little sister Molly-- who calls him Jake. At some point in his journey, Jake encounters a Native American friend from his past, a curious White stranger, and a woman of ill- repute who turns out to be more than he could have ever imagined. Before long, Molly uncovers hidden secrets that explain Jake's mysterious decision to abandon his life on the Newman farm, but his disappearance leads to tragedy and hardship for those who love him. “INDIGO SKY” from the MILCREEK POND COLLECTION
A voracious reader from the age of four, Kay has shaped her world through reading. It is also her strength and vision to receive from others the utmost fulfillment through writing. As part of the Milcreek Pond Collection: "Milcreek Pond" and "Indigo Sky" are adventurous true-to-life stories of historical fiction written with youth and the entire family in mind. "Alex's Eyes" is the true saga of life after Reconstruction as seen through the eyes of her great-grandparents, Alex and Molly Powell. The Milcreek Pond Book Series has won many awards and much recognition, including 2019 Semi-Finalist North Street Book Prize. Kay, a high school history teacher who will soon retire to write full time, lives in the Midwestern Illinois Heartland with her husband, her most devoted fan.
I couldn't put this book down. It follows the saga of a mixed race family during Reconstruction. Their personalities and perils are ones we still have today as all people try to just "get along" with each other. Great historical background. Reading it was a learning and enjoyable experience. You will fall in love with Molly, Jake and Enola. Going back to read the original book Milcreek Pond after this. I probably should have read it first.
I enjoyed reading Indigo Sky: From the Millcreek Pond Collection by Kay Carroll. This part of the series continues to reveal more of the depth and scope of the characters Molly and Jake. Readers are able to see these two characters evolve and mature over time and their inner stories magnify the theme throughout the book. Ms. Carroll tells a realistic and powerful story that draws the reader in from beginning to end. The storyline appeals to a variety of readers offering romance, mystery, historical and spiritual references. Indigo Sky takes the reader on an emotional and informational journey of life during the reconstruction era for a mixed race family.
Ms. Carroll utilizes various literary techniques to tell a historical rich, realistic and powerful story in Indigo Sky. Multiple points of view and flashbacks are very effective in helping to broaden the storyline and create 3-dimensional characters. The story's theme is conveyed in a way that unites oppressed people in their fight to overcome the past, gain independence and desire for a better life. The story offers an in depth view of Molly and Jake's struggle to find their own personal path, struggle with discrimination while maintaining their spiritual upbringing. Indigo Sky is not just an important story of the past, but it is a very relevant story for many people in the present. I look forward to more great stories from Kay Carroll as she uses her literary talent to create memorable characters and tell stories that leave resonating themes.
