This new addition to the author’s Foundation of Buddhist Thought series, based on his popular courses, continues his mission to create a simple, systematic introduction to Buddhist philosophy and practice. This volume explores the importance of compassion in our lives and the traditional techniques for developing bodhichitta, or "the mind of enlightenment," which aspires to buddhahood in order to liberate all beings from suffering. Topics include the seven-point cause-and-effect method for developing bodhichitta, the practice of exchanging oneself for others, and the ten deeds of a bodhisattva.
Geshe Tashi Tsering was born in Tibet in 1958 and received his Geshe Lharampa degree (similar to a doctorate in divinity) from Sera Monastery in India in 1987. Since 1994, he has been the guiding teacher of the Jamyang Buddhist Centre in London, while also teaching at other Buddhist centers worldwide.
Ever since I was recommended this series, I've found these books by Geshe Tashi Tsering wonderfully helpful. For anyone on the Mahayana path in the Gelugpa tradition, it sets out so nicely the overall framework in which the Tibetan Buddhist teachings sit. The Awakening Mind had a very tidy and informative presentation on the role Bodhicitta plays in our Dharma practice. The sections which defined equanimity (in the context of Bodhicitta), exchanging self & others as well as the 6 perfections had the greatest impact for me. I truly think this is one of those essentials-must-read for those in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition as it really helps you to be clear as to what the stages of the path are. Enjoy!
Very clear instructions on generating bodhicitta in the hopes of helping all sentient beings. May we all become bodhisattvas on the Great Vehicle going into Nirvana, no one left behind
Wonderful book for getting to the nitty-gritty of basic Buddhist philosophy. Anyone interested in Buddhism who is just starting out will get a great deal from his books.
