Előbb-utóbb megkezdi működését az Egyesült Nemzetek Világegyeteme. Állítólag Travelógiai – Utazástudományi – Tanszék felállítását is tervezik. Remélem, magyar professzor tartja majd ott az előadásokat. Nem azért mert többet, hanem mert kevesebbet utazunk más nemzetek fiainál. Ezért megtanultunk jobban nézni és többet látni a nagyvilágból.
Ebben a könyvben saját útiélményeimből próbáltam egy csokorravalót összeállítani. Húsz év leforgása alatt öt világrész ötven országába jutottam el, nemzetközi találkozók tolmácsa vagy politikai-tudományos életünk vezetőinek kísérőjeként. Néha mint egyszerű turista. Egyedül, de sohasem magányosan. Lengyel diák és japán tengerész, svéd háziasszony és indonéz bankár, koreai orvos és andalúziai sofőr segített megismerni és megérteni a nagyvilágot. Tőlük tanultam meg a legfontosabb leckét is: mindenütt barátság fogadja a barátként érkezőt.

About the author

Kató Lomb was a Hungarian interpreter, translator, language genius and one of the first simultaneous interpreters of the world.

Originally she graduated in physics and chemistry, but her interest soon led her to languages. Native in Hungarian, she was able to interpret fluently in nine or ten languages (in four of them even without preparation), and she translated technical literature and read belles-lettres in six languages. She was able to understand journalism in further eleven languages. As she put it, altogether she earned money with sixteen languages (Bulgarian, Chinese, Danish, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Ukrainian). She learned these languages mostly by self-effort, as an autodidact. Her aims to acquire these languages were most of all practical, to satisfy her interest.

According to her own account, her long life was highlighted not primarily by the command of languages but the actual study of them. Through her books, published in Hungarian in several editions as well as in some other languages, interviews (in print and on the air) and conversations, she tried to share this joy with generations.

Kató Lomb was a Hungarian interpreter, translator, polyglot. Due to her work, she travelled a lot and visited many countries. In her travelogue, An interpreter around the world she reports about her travels and experiences, most specifically she shares her impressions of different countries and cultures.

Some black and white, old photos are included in the book, and the author is a great storyteller, but the focus is on feelings and impressions. Through her observations she’s able to make you feel the atmosphere of a place.

Today, when we tell about our holidays mostly only in photos, hundreds of photos, actually, this book makes me highly nostalgic for a somehow deeper, more authentic way of travelling.

Látszik, hogy nem ebben a rendszerben íródott, ennek ellenére nagyon érdekes olvasmány egy nagyon érdekes írótól, aki műveltsége ellenére is minduntalan rácsodálkozik a világra. Bravó, így kell utazni!

It's a fantastic book from a fantastic and empowering woman. It depicts a long gone era worth learning about. All throughout the book I wished I could have gotten to know the author. Intelligent and yet humble, using brilliant expressions to bring cultures and people closer to the reader.
