Ever since Britney transformed herself from freak-and-geek to the most popular girl at school, her life has been touched by tragedy. First it was her mom, who drowned on a family rafting trip. Then her hockey-star boyfriend, Ricky, was killed in a hit-and-run.
When the deaths continue to pile up, everyone fears for Britney. Sure she's popular, blond, and fabulous.
But is that enough reason for someone to want to... kill her?
This is the worst mystery/thriller/murder story I've ever read.
Sure, it sounded so promising with the murder pile-ups and tragedy. It sounded like my type of cup of tea with the whole freak-turned-blonde-popular-fabulous. It sounded perfect for me!!
But it wasn't. It fucking wasn't.
So, this girl named Britney Johnson is in danger because apparently someone wants to kill her. Yikes. Everyone around her starts to fear for her because people she knows and loves are being murdered. Who could it be? WHY WILL SOMEONE DO THIS?!! IS SOMEONE REALLY THAT JEALOUS OF HER!!
The answer is no. Even if I knew this girl, I wouldn't be jealous of her. Not even if she was sane. I couldn't identify with any of the characters because they were one-dimensional. They all sounded the same; if it wasn't because of each narrator's name, I wouldn't have known who was speaking. When most of them were murdered . . . I felt nothing. Zip. Nada. Was I supposed to feel sorry for them? When? Where? Do I even care?
It was supposed to be gruesome and dark. It was. And it kind of saved the story. But until I reached page number 180, things went downhill.
The worse part was, that you could already figure out the killer before the first half. Oh, I'm sorry! I thought this was a mystery/thriller!! It was obvious. The suspense was gone. When the reviews said something about a "twisted" ending, I already knew what was it. If the author expected me to be thinking: "Oh! My little brain didn't see that coming!!" it never happened.
Oh, but Sean Olin thought it was a great idea to create a twist within a twist. No. Just no. You already made a fool of yourself by creating an unoriginal twist ending, why fuck yourself up even more?!
Everything could had been all forgiven if the story was at least well-written. It wasn't. A 10-year-old could have been written this. Or Sean Olin is just very simplistic for my taste.
Whatever it was, Killing Britney was a sorry-ass excuse of a novel, and I feel sorry for the mentality of the people who thought it was a great idea to publish this.
I just... didn't really like it. Like, the graphic things didn't really bother me... but the book in itself just bothered me. I didn't like the character, Britney and there was NO justice and that BOTHERS me. She's not logical at all in her thought process and it never mentions WHAT THE HECK HER DEAL IS. She's a sociopath, okay, cool. But, she was going to a freaking PSYCHIATRIST even if in all media, they are considered really below what they should be in their field they aren't bad enough to have not noticed SOME sign that the girl was TOTALLY off her rocker. Also, it never developed that she WAS insane. There was NO build up and when I read the last, what 3 pages? I was thinking, "Wow, the author was trying to think up some clever ending. He sucks." I never guessed the ending because in my opinion there was almost nothing that indicated that side of her personality. I did not like this book at all.

If I weren't such a peaceful human being I would have killed Britney myself after the first few chapters of the book, which I reread thinking I had misread something. Well, I didn't! I just figured out what was going on almost from the very beginning. I wouldn't say it was a bad book, just that it wasn't for me and several gruesome descriptions of murder scenes made matters much worse.
Killing Britney was really good. It's about a girl named Britney, whose mother died about two years before the book even starts. Just when her life is going good, and she has a lot of friends, and a good boyfriend everyone she cares about is starting to die and she doesn't know what to do. She thinks it is all her fault everyone is dying. She also thinks someone is out to get her too. At first everyone thinks Ricky's death was an accident, but then when everyone else starts dying, and Britney starts getting strange threats, people realize that is was not an accident. Britney is terrified for her life, and it seems like she is going crazy. The end is my favorite part. The killer is not someone you would suspect.
Wow. I hated this book. 😍 With a passion!! 😘 If someone asks you how NOT to write a book, please show them "Killing Britney". They will learn about bad writing, bad pacing, and awful plot very, very fast.
A favorite coworker of mine was telling me about this book a while back, and so I wasn't expecting that this book would be the pinnacle of literature or anything. However, I hate-read it so that her and I could convene and bond over how horrible this book was.
Where do I even begin?
First of all, Britney is an unlikable, vapid, underdeveloped main character. 🤩 The summary of the book promises that "she's someone everyone loves to hate", and then the book proceeds to tell us how many friends she has, how she's popular at school, and how everyone claps for her speech at a funeral. How exactly does everyone hate her? Aside from that, there's supposed to be a thread throughout the book that Britney suffers from delusions/paranoia. Sean Olin seems to forget this until about halfway through the book, and even then it's still underused.
The fact that Britney is a nerve-scrapingly annoying MC is made slightly better in that everyone else is ALSO annoying, direction-less, and horribly written TOO. 🥳 There is not one character that redeems this dude's horrible prose and character development. He kept switching between literally EVERYONE'S POV and I could never tell who's head I was in or not. Everyone in these reviews kept telling me this book was "worth it" for the ending, but my coworker had misremembered the actual ending and gave me an ending SO GOOD that the real one just didn't live up to it.
I would file this book under the "so bad, it could be good if it were just a little bit worse" pile. The only parts I actually enjoyed were, ironically, the death scenes. They weren't "done well" by any stretch of the imagination 😍, but they did read like a bad made-for-tv-teen-slasher flick. I highly doubt that this was Sean Olin's intention, because I don't think he went in with ANY intention whatsoever, but it was still effective.
I can't say that I would read this again, but I'm going to have a great time explaining this bonkers book to anyone willing to sit and sip wine with me while I rant about it.
I might add more to this review later, as I have been staying up at night thinking of writing it.
The story "Killing Britney", is about a girl named Britney who at first started off as a quiet, nerdy type of girl who becomes one of the most popular girls in school, who gains a new group of friends, the popluar girls, leaving behind her old friends, and gaining one of the hottest, most popular hockey players, Ricky, from school. However, before she gained this new life style, Britney's mother, had mysteriously drowned during the summer that her family went to the lake. Her body was never found. It isn't until one night that Britney and her boyfriend Ricky got into an argument after a party they had been at that Ricky gets killed. No one knows who the murderer is, and afterwards, a bunch of strange things begin happening to Britney. The deaths of the people she once knew begin to pile up. Britney becomes frightened and she feels that someone is out to get her, to kill her. She has a female cop who is on the case, trying to help Britney, she has her dad for comfort, and she has a teenage guy who is living with her and her father, who is helping to her to keep her mind off all the deaths occuring around her. In the end, they "find" and arrest "the killer" of all the deaths, and Britney is "dead". I would rate this book a 2. I did not like the setting or the plot, and a lot of things were left unsaid at the end of the book. The ending was not very well put together, and I had already suspected who the killer would be. The story was a little disapointing.

General response/reaction: Honestly when I picked this book up, I thought it was going to be about Britney Spears but on a more serious note, I figured it would be a stupid teen book about a popular cheerleader that gets murdered or something of that matter. But, when I started reading, it was nothing what I originally expected. I was thrown for a loop at the ending when the main character ended up being the mastermind behind all the murders.

Strengths (including reviews and awards): This book was very well written. I love horror books or anything with mystery. I couldn’t put the book down until I found out who the killer(s) were.
Drawbacks or other cautions: If you do not like suspense or reading gore, this book is not for you. It’s a book about betrayal and how one girl is a psychopath.
Teaching ideas: Before Reading - Predictions of who the killer is? - Show a movie clip from a movie of a similar genre or a scary movie with a killer going after the “popular girl” During Reading - Have students develop a theme web - Discussions after each chapter - Quiz to make sure students are reading - Role play the characters - Journal Entries After Reading - Making a movie trailer of what students think are the important parts of this book - Essay questions (i.e. writing a different ending)

Killing Britney is about a girl named Britney Johnson who's mother got killed a couple years back and now, a lot more people are getting killed. First, it was her boyfriend Ricky, then her best friend's brother Karl, then her best friend Melissa and finally, Bobby. She makes it seem like someone's after her, but in really, she is the one who kills everyone. Once she thinks that someone is figuring out her plan, she kills them.
I picked up this book because from the paragraph on the back, it seemed like there was going to be a lot of suspects and murders but there weren't that many. I finished the book because i wanted to see who the killer was. At first, i thought it was Bobby Plumley but it was her behind the whole thing.
I recommend this book to people who enjoy murder stories but don't go very deep into the whole thing.

I'm going to have to back and review the clues again, but I have to say I'm still not even sure what happened here. All the characters are crazy. The plot jumped around in such bizarre twists that the writer was forced to have a character explain everything right at the end. And is this person to be believed?
The characters were not developed enough for me to care that any of them were murdered. May of the plot twists just did not make sense, including the notes Melissa found in her brother's apartments written in Britney's mother's handwriting. I never did quite figure that out.
Well, pondering the plot of this unusual horror tale will keep some readers entertained. I prefer thrillers that lead me on, keep me on my toes, but make sense by the end.
The blurb makes it sound so dark and terrifying. Minus the whole freak&greek turned into blond&fabulous thing. Well, it's not. Dark and terrifying, that is. Killing Britney is predictable and easy to skim over and my eight year old cousin can probably figure out who the killer was.
No.
You can't call it a mystery if you had it all figured out before the half point mark.
I chose to read the book Killing Britney by Sean Olin because I love mysteries. Any “who done it” book draws my attention very easily. After finishing my last book, I felt that I needed to spice up my reading choice and dip back into my favorite genre.
The book Killing Britney immediately drew my attention. Britney was the outcast in school. But when she started dated the hot shot hockey player Ricky and becomes a “hockey wife” she started to become popular fast. She didn’t live a perfect life though. Her mom died when she was younger by drowning. She moves in with her father in Wisconsin and her house is full of tension. When she goes to a party to celebrate the victory of the hockey team, she gets into an argument with Rickey when she refuses to get drunk. After her and Ricky get into a very heated argument before she gets out of the car, Ricky speeds out of her neighborhood. Shortly after, he was killed during a hit-and-run. As the story continues, many deaths take place surrounding Britney. Everyone begins to fear for her. She was the most popular girl in school and everyone was dying around her. What if she was next? Who is targeting all the people around her? Britney automatically thinks it’s her fault that everyone is dying and she learns that Ricky’s death most certainly was not an accident. Someone was out to get them.
This book was way too predictable. I knew halfway through who the killer of all the victims were. I didn’t hate this book but it definitely wasn’t one of the best books i’ve ever read. I hated the characters. More specifically I hated Britney. She was the type of person to play innocent when she knew she wasn’t. She seemed as if she didn’t have a care in the world. When she gets in the car with Ricky after he’s drinking, she begins an argument. And when he says “I love you” she gets out of the car and insists on talking the next day. I could see why someone would want to target her. I feel as if her character ruined the story all together for me. She wasn’t the only one though. I think all the characters weren’t fully developed and none of the plot twists really made any sense.
Although the story had many downfalls, it was still a decent book. It was fun to read and all the bizarre twists sort of made it interesting. It was really dark and graphic which helped picture what was happening in the story. For example, the author went in detail about Ricky and Karl’s death and it made it extremely easy to imagine what was happening in my mind.
I don’t necessarily recommend this book, however, my intake is my own personal opinion and may change from person to person. I personally think it could have been much better. I was honestly sort of disappointed.
Oh, this book. Where to begin? I must say that I really, really enjoy it even though it is something I would never really read or get into. My tastes in book do not reach out to "murder mystery/thriller." I find those types of books to be... well... to put it bluntly... boring. There's no appeal to them for me. They all just suck. (That's right. I'm using proper language now.) So if I don't find them appealing then why did I read this one? Well, let me start off by telling you a very short story. About... four years ago, I went to the library in search of something new to read (much like I do now) and started browsing the shelves. I didn't have any particular book in mind so I was there for quite a while. When my parents became impatient and wanted me to hurry up, that's when I spotted this baby! I just saw the cover and the title and I knew what it was, but I still picked it up and read the synopsis on the back. Since I had nothing better to read, I decided to take it home with me. Once there, I began reading it.... and reading it... and reading it... until I was done with it. Took me a total of three-four hours to finish. There's just something about this book that I thoroughly enjoyed that made me really like it.
I think Sean Olin did a pretty good job in writing this book. I will admit that it is not the best writing I have ever come across but it was still decent. It might be a bit too simple for some people. Yeah, it's a YA novel but it have a lot of mature scenes. Especially with the gore. Lots of gore. Yuck. Still, since it has some mature themes, there should have been more adult writing involved. My opinion only, people! There were a lot of typos (at least in my copy) and some sentences didn't make sense unless you read them over twice but for some reason... I didn't mind it that much. I guess I just liked the story and how the characters were so stereotypical. To be honest... this review is going to be a little bit awkward for me because, till this very day, I have no idea why I like it. Yet I have read this book three times now! God, what is wrong with me! I mean... the book is not necessarily compelling... and it becomes predictable towards the middle... BUT I FREAKING LOVE THIS BOOK! I don't know what Olin did to me but... bravo, Olin. Bravo.
I would say this book had really only one main character, though there was another that appeared every so often. Britney is the main character... and I did not like her one bit. She was supposed to be this smart girl who was "geeky" and then she changed her entire persona just so she could "fit in." Girls who do this lose a tremendous amount of awesome points to me. Yes, most girls do DO this... but I hate it. I find it weak and pathetic, which she is! Britney started ditching her own friends just because she wanted to hang out with the populars. See? Nothing new here. She was superficial, annoying, slutty, and I don't like her. Plus, she was disgusting! juts a horrible mess of a person! Ugh! How vulgar! -_-" The next main character is Adam. He was a bit better. I don't understand his fixation on Britney but whatever. Guys will be guys. (Okay... that was sexist, wasn't it? I do apologize, readers. I'm cranky.) Adam was this cocky, smart mouth, badass. I enjoyed him a lot more than I did Britney that's for sure! I think he made the book a lot more interesting than if it was just about her. However, towards the end of the book, he started to get on my nerves as well. I can't say why but... everything was just so wrong and stupid. I just am not a fan of these two characters. *Rolls eyes*
The side characters were my favorite part of this book (as it always is with any book). I loved Ed Johnson, Britney's father. He was so sweet and kind and gentle and cute and I love him! (So I'm fangirling... big deal.) I think out of all the characters, he was the best one. Then there's Melissa Brown, Britney's best friend, and she was another delight. She was a bit of a slob what with having her clothes on the floor, but she reminded me of what my house will look like whenever I get my own place: Books and note EVERYWHERE! For that, plus how awesome she is, I love her. There's Karl Brown and he was... weird. That is all. Bobby Plumley was another freak but... he wasn't so bad. He was just kinda "there" for me. There's Jan Johnson, Britney's mom, but... yeah... read the book. Last character I want to talk about is Tara Russell. She was the cop behind the entire ordeal and honestly, I've seen better cops. Her personality wasn't what bothered me. I thought she was actually kinda sweet. However, she was just dumb! There were so many signs to what could have been going on but she just completely missed them all! It was so obvious, too! ARGH! She should be behind a desk if she couldn't figure out something as basic as, oh, I don't know, THE KILLER BEING TWO STEPS AWAY!!! But I digress. Like I said, I like her personality but as a cop, she sucks. I'm telling you, the only two characters I enjoyed in this book was Ed Johnson and Melissa Brown. Only two.
Readers, you're all probably wondering why I gave this book a four out of five if all I did was bash the characters, stated its predictability, and mentioned how the writing was rather poor... and I reply with what I said before... I DON'T KNOW!!! I really have no idea why I like this book. It's rather frustrating because I'm not really sure what about this book pulls me in. Maybe it's the way I kept screaming at the top of my lungs at the characters to get a clue or the way Britney was such a bloody bitch or the way Mr. Johnson carried himself (I think it might be this one). Whatever it is, I love this book. It's still a very well put together kind of story and I think that if you like this sort of thing, you should check it out. It's not for everyone. No, no. But I do think it's worth the read at least once. Check it out from the library so you can see what I mean. It's not as bad as I made it out to be. XD Just don't expect nothing too amazing. Well, that's all for this review/rant. I'm still trying to get back into the reading cycle. I only have this month left before the end of the year and I still have a lot of books left to read. So!!! Here I go! >:3
I read this book in middle school and for YEARS it was my favorite of all time. Somewhere along the line I lost it. I freaked when I found a copy thrifting and knew I had to read it ASAP because I remembered none of it other than the one guys name was Adam and there was a zamboni involved lol. Overall it was short and very simply written. The killing parts were very brutal and gruesome which was awesome but the rest was just alright. The twist was simultaneously expected but also not? I don't even know. If I didn't have such an emotional bond with this book I might have only given it 3 stars but I'm sticking with 4 and I'm not upset that I read it again after all these years.
Not good. It really was dissappointing how it began and the end didn't really conclude the story well. The middle was just like randomly put together and not thought out, like an elementary schooler wrote it.
at first i didn’t know if i was going to like this book because it was outdated. but it took me on a trip! i thought i figured it out, then i didn’t, then i thought i did again, and it went the complete opposite of how i thought it would end😳 great book!!!
I read this in middle school long ago, and it got me into crime. This was the start of my weird obsession, so I give it a star more than I normally would wany.
This is definitely a wild ride. A YA/Teen book about a girl named Britney. After the death of her mother, Britney is trying to put her life back together. She starts dating the school hockey star Rickey, she has a new group of friends, things start falling into place. That is, until Rickey is killed in a hit-and-run and the killer remains at large. As the death toll continues to rise, everyone starts to wonder - who is out to get Britney? And do they hate her enough to kill her?
So I got this book for $1 at 2nd & Charles on a whim. I think as a high schooler I would have eaten this book up. The mystery of who the murderer is actually kept me guessing and the ending surprised me. A decent read, even though there were few likeable characters (shout out Melissa!!). As an adult I would have been disappointed to pick this up at full price, but given that it was only a dollar and that I really would have liked it when I was younger I give it a solid 3/5 stars.
I found this book again and thought, "Hey, why not?"
Three stars because while others didn't like the plot twist, I sure as hell did. It was unexpected for me when I first read it and I still quite like it to this day.
The mystery as others have pointed out isn't that great but, I'll let it slide THIS TIME because of the plot twist.
The reason I didn't give four stars was the fact that I couldn't tell anyone apart from Brittany(and yes I know her name is Britney not Brittany). All the characters beside her were hard to read.
Overall I recommended this to those who like a kind of interesting read. For those who are young, like 13-15 years young.
Even though Abbie already told me like the whole book and what happens and stuff...I wanted to read it so I did!! This book was very graphic with the murders and deaths... it was scary and I would NOT recommend it to people who are scared to watch horror movies because once again. The description is very graphic and easy 2 picture in your mind. It was a good book and other than that... I would recommend this book to any1 who can handle scary movies
*****If you can't handle descriptions of death do not read this book. This book gives such grave details of the scene each person is found in.*****This book was good kept me reading but I don't understand the ending. I don't understand if everything Britney said at the end of the book was true or not. The book kept tossing me back and forth. I also don't get why Bobby would take the blame for Britney if Britney never liked him. Was Britney really psychotic?

A crazy mess of a book. The author appeared to be trying to combine w clique type story with a slasher. Neither really worked. Also, without giving anything away, the ending bordered on nonsensical.
This was not what I expected it to be. This good mystery novel for the teen crowd. I found a few parts a bit lacking in keeping me interested though. The whole aspect of 'Who Dun It?' kept me reading. Good for a quick read.
The book is a little scary because you think that this guy is killing all of Britney's family and friends but then you find out that it's Britney and she disisas's her self to be someone knew each time.
