Reread June 2024: Just as delightful the second time around! This book is a classic - a perfect blend of romance, comedy, and adventure.
Trace and Robby are swoony MCs, and the entire Crabtree clan has a place in my heart.
If you haven't read this book yet, you're missing out.

With a title like Robby Riverton: Mail Order Bride, this book had to be good.
And it was. It really, really was.
Charming, funny, sexy, sweet. Plus, feelz, y'all. Serious FEELZ.
After witnessing a murder, Robby Riverton, just making a name for himself on the New York stage, has to hightail it out west before he's a dead man. On the coach, he meets a lovely but flighty woman named Rowena, on her way to marry a man by the name of Crabtree in Flat Bottom, New Mexico Territories. Rowena is knocked up (she has a thing for handsome) and absconds with a banker.
When the gang of criminals catches up with Robby, he has no choice but to become Rowena: some restitching, makeup, shawl, bonnet, and tah-dah! the NEW and improved Rowena is born. Robby is an actor after all.
Robby may be good, but he's not good enough to fool Trace Crabtree (not the groom; that would be his brother Clovis). Maybe it's the male energy or the broad shoulders ... or maybe it's the 19th century American frontier equivalent of Gaydar, but the first time Trace sees Rowena, he knows something is up and soon discovers Robby, who's all man, beneath the skirts.
Trace's rather uncouth family members play a big role in the story. Rowena is Clovis's betrothed after all. Pa-Pa paid $200 for her, and damn straight she's gonna marry his boy. So what if Clovis is hairy and has no table manners? That's how things roll on the Crabtree ranch in Flat Bottom.
Robby as Rowena immediately bonds with Marcy and Emmie, Trace's sweet but mousy sisters-in-law who have the misfortune of being married to his two older brothers. The women sport mysterious bruises, but, as Robby notices, so do the men. What in the devil is happening on that ranch? The answer, by the way, is nothing nefarious but it IS freakin' hilarious.
Robby and Trace start meeting on the sly, and Robby is so ready to shed the frilly dresses and get hot and bothered with Trace. There's a good amount of steam in this story, but plenty of talking and bonding too.
Trace sees beyond Robby's act and charm to his intrinsic goodness. He sees that Robby treats Trace's family with kindness, knows how to manage Pa-Pa, and befriends Marcy and Emmie, as well as the kids. Robby feels guilty for fooling the Crabtrees, especially poor Clovis, who's already been rejected by the woman he wanted to court. Robby even gives Clovis a makeover, and then everyone wants one.
But Trace belongs in Flat Bottom. He's the sheriff after all. And he's lazy (or so he claims); why do anything else?
The chapters alternate between Trace's and Robby's POV, and their voices are entirely distinct.
Robby Riverton: Mail Order Bride is part romantic comedy, part John Wayne Western, part shoot-'em-up adventure.
I don't want to get too much into the plot, because half the fun is in the discovery, but let me say this: if you don't love this book, I dunno if we can be friends.
The family antics (those Crabtrees sure are creative in finding entertainment); the light spoof on Western shootout films (mobsters, horses, and guns); the sizzling chemistry between the MCs; the incredible characters (not just Robby and Trace, but all of Trace's crazy family and Rowena too); the daring rescue (Trace saves Robby's life not once but twice!); the GREATEST HEA (I may have swooned reading the epilogue) . . . it all adds up to one sexy & wild ride.
I had so much fun reading this book. I smiled and CHEERED and just all around enjoyed the hell out of it. This is one of Eli Easton's best! Don't miss it.

Well,the title was enough to get me interested...a man in women's clothes...but underneath those petticoats,Robby was All Man...
I'm quite giddy after finishing this little gem.....I'm practically swooning at how much I adored Robby.I've always been a fan of Eli Easton and she's outdone herself here.This was a joy to read from start to finish,funny,sexy,a bit of intrigue and full of delicious sassiness in the form of Robby.
Robby Riverton is loving his life on the New York stage,he's worked hard to get where he is but his world is turned upside down one night when he witnesses a murder carried out by a New York crime boss.With no option other than to go on the run,he escapes on a wagon train headed west.He doesn't really have a plan but when the opportunity presents itself he thinks disguising himself as a mail order bride might be the short term solution.Drastic? most definitely but better than the Bowery Boys getting their hands on him.And,after all,Robby is quite the stunner with his long lashed green eyes and Brown curly hair...he can easily pass for a girl,right?
Trace Crabtree is the local sheriff of Flat Bottom-a sleepy town where nothing much happens and that's fine with Trace,the last thing he wants is drama,but drama is most definitely what he gets when Robby Riverton crashes into his life.You see Robby,disguised as Rowena, just happens to be betrothed to one of Trace's brothers....
Trace agrees to help Robby and after all,all Robby had to do is pose as Rowena for a few days...how difficult can it be?
I loved Robby as himself and I loved him just as much as Rowena.When he arrives at the ranch he can't believe how uncouth Trace's father and brothers are and it doesn't take him long to whip those men into shape.It seems Robby can charm the birds from the trees and get exactly what he wants....
But with the ever present threat of the Bowery Boys catching up with him things are about to get a whole lot complicated....just as well he's got Trace to rely on.
Trace and Robby are super cute and sexy together and have a believable chemistry between them.The sex scenes are pretty steamy and their placement in the story was just right.
The supporting characters all play their parts perfectly,especially Pa-Pa,who I ended up loving!!
Highly Recommended.

Robby continued, on a roll now. He let Rowena have full steam and she was charming, ruthless, and glorious.(...)

Robby Riverton: Mail Order Bride is by Eli Easton, which means my immediate reaction was GET IN MY KINDLE!! I'm an Eli Easton super-fan, so any book she writes, I'm getting. And Robby Riverton: Mail Order Bride didn't let me down.
I'm a historical romance lover, but American historical romance, especially Westerns, are probably my least read genre in historicals. I was a bit nervous about it, honestly, since a big howdy, partner does NOT turn my crank. But the book was much more clever than I was expecting.
Frankly, though the romance was good and certainly built as the story went on (the start of the romance was a bit rushed for me), what really sold me on the story was Robby Riverton himself. Robby was amazing. A master manipulator in the best way, he used his acting talents and natural charm to bend those around him to his will. I loved, loved, loved the magic he worked on the Crabtree family. The whole story was worth it to see the Crabtree family change for the better. I really loved Robby's moments with the Crabtree family, almost more than the moments between Robby and Trace.
The story was also a bit suspenseful, and the ending had me on the edge of my seat. I knew our resilient Robby would make it (this is romance, after all!), but I still felt a smidge anxious. And I loved the way the story wrapped up.
A must read for Eli Easton fans that are interested in American historical romances. Eli Easton always writes winners.

OMG! I absolutely loved reading the tale of Robby Riverton. 😍 A male mail order bride story set up in the wild west of America in the late 19th Century? Sign me up now! 🙌 I haven’t read many of Eli Easton’s work but I’m totally in love. It was fun, funny, thrilling and exciting! Absolutely delicious! 😉
Robby Riverton worked back and bone for 9 years to reach where he is now. 4 years of slaving away at the backstage, taking care of spoilt and privileged actors and finally he got a breakthrough in his career when one of the actresses fell ill. And now, after 5 years on stage, he’s become a very famous actor in New York City who’s about to land an even bigger role which is going to change his career life. Only that was not what changed his life. Witnessing a notorious mobster ruthlessly slaughtering a person? Yup! That’s what changed his life. 😳 And now, fame doesn’t sound that appealing anymore when he’s on the run for his very life.
Trace Crabtree, not to be mistaken as Craptree, 😂 yup, he had heard enough jokes in his life, is a lazy, contented sheriff of Flat Bottom in the middle of nowhere in Mid-West. Life has been going pretty well for him. A comfortable job which also provides an accomodation and a generous amount of salary and his very family lives in the same town. Except, the most important necessity of his life will always be his dirty little secret that no one can know. A man to embrace, a man to love and a man to call his. 😢 Trace is a practical man and he’s happy occasionally getting laid with willing men whenever he visits to a nearby busy town, Santa Fe. Except, Rowena came storming into his life. Or rather, shall we say Robby in disguise? 😄 And now, Trace doesn’t know what to do with handful and headstrong Robby betrothed to his younger brother. And if that’s not problematic enough, a gang of mobster from New York is on Robby’s tail, determined to flail him alive and wipe out everyone who stands in their way. Now Trace is in the biggest dilemma of his life, protect Robby or protect his family? 😐
Crabtrees sure are an eccentric group and that suited Robby just fine. Not used to hiding in a hidey hole and being ordered around to, Robby decided to change the life of this farm family while he’s staying there as Rowena. Meanwhile, Robby is drooling over that masculine and arrogant sheriff, Trace.😁 He knew that being betrothed to Sheriff’s younger brother made him a very delicious yet a forbidden fruit. But aren’t forbidden fruits always sweeter and juicer? 😉 While Robby/Rowena is adapting a peaceful, hardworking farm life, the mobsters will not relent unless he’s 6 feet underground. Stay there and risk everyone he came to love from Crabtree family or go away and leave everyone even the very man who stole his heart? 😭
Absolutely loved Robby, witty, intelligent, funny and resourceful. He made the most out of every situation he’s in and he’s the epitome of “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”. 😌 The connection between Robby and his adopted family was not only funny and hilarious but also heartwarming and joyful. It’s so refreshing to read a story where it’s not solely focused on the two MCs but has a set of very strong and entertaining supporting characters and still didn’t made the story muddled. And UST between Trace and Robby? Oooooo .. finger-licking-delicious! 😍 Trace was in a shell after he came back from war and getting more distant from his family. Robby not only made him a true family member of Crabtrees, he made him fall in love with his family all over again. It was very sweet and heartmelting to see the love and sacrifices between family members. 😌 Reminds me to appreciate more of my own family. And I loved the building of romance between Trace and Robby. It was realistic, believable, sweet and romantic. But it was laced with the moderate amount of bittersweet angst so it was not too fluffy too. 👍 Loved the epilogue and loved how everything turned out in the end. I’m sure it’s one of the best work of Eli Easton’s and I’ll be reading more of her books. 👏

If Robby had conjured up an image in his mind of what the most enticing vision of a Wild West cowboy would look like, that man would be Trace Crabtree. He was big-boned and rangy. His shoulders went on for a mile and so did his legs in those black pants. His light brown hair hung thick to his shoulders, and his eyes were the golden brown of the desert. His skin was tanned and slightly wind-chapped, and he had a strong, stubbled jaw and long, thick sideburns. More than anything, that lazy, coiled-snake manner of his was enough to make Robby break out in a cold sweat.
Tempting as sin? Yes. Mutual attraction that threatened to burst into a forest fire? And then some.
“Thing is, Rowena, we ain’t much for airs and graces,” Pa-Pa said, looking at Robby with a wary expression. “That’s the marvelous thing about life. You can always learn.”

“I just want you to know,” Robby said, his voice thick. “That I love you, Trace. I really do. And I know that doesn’t change the way things are. But I just . . .wanted you to have that to keep. However, you want to keep it. And I thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me.”
“Not that I’m the most ambitious son of a bitch in the world,” he grinned. “But you’re worth it, Robby Riverton.”
“Honey, I’m just as happy to sit in this here town with you until we grow old.” And so . . . that’s what they did.

Robby not only made him a true family member of Crabtrees, he made him fall in love with his family all over again. It was very sweet and heartmelting to see the love and sacrifices between family members. 😌 Reminds me to appreciate more of my own family. And I loved the building of romance between Trace and Robby. It was realistic, believable, sweet and romantic. But it was laced with the moderate amount of bittersweet angst so it was not too fluffy too. 👍 Loved the epilogue and loved how everything turned out in the end. I’m sure it’s one of the best work of Eli Easton’s and I’ll be reading more of her books. 👏

If Robby had conjured up an image in his mind of what the most enticing vision of a Wild West cowboy would look like, that man would be Trace Crabtree. He was big-boned and rangy. His shoulders went on for a mile and so did his legs in those black pants. His light brown hair hung thick to his shoulders, and his eyes were the golden brown of the desert. His skin was tanned and slightly wind-chapped, and he had a strong, stubbled jaw and long, thick sideburns. More than anything, that lazy, coiled-snake manner of his was enough to make Robby break out in a cold sweat.
Tempting as sin? Yes. Mutual attraction that threatened to burst into a forest fire? And then some.
“Thing is, Rowena, we ain’t much for airs and graces,” Pa-Pa said, looking at Robby with a wary expression. “That’s the marvelous thing about life. You can always learn.”
Damn Robby Riverton, anyhow. He was like a litter of puppies—loads of rambunctious trouble and just as appealing. And he’d no doubt leave just as much of a stinking mess behind too.
“There ain’t a person alive who could cast you into shadow, Robby Riverton. I can’t imagine you’re ever in a room where ya ain’t the most fascinatin’ thing in it. I can’t keep my eyes off ya. Guess that’s what they call charisma. No wonder you were a star in New York.”
“I just want you to know,” Robby said, his voice thick. “That I love you, Trace. I really do. And I know that doesn’t change the way things are. But I just . . .wanted you to have that to keep. However, you want to keep it. And I thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me.”
“Not that I’m the most ambitious son of a bitch in the world,” he grinned. “But you’re worth it, Robby Riverton.”
“Honey, I’m just as happy to sit in this here town with you until we grow old.” And so . . . that’s what they did.

I'm not exactly sure what to say here. You know how we all tend to have certain genres that are our absolute favorites, while other themes are a bit more 'meh' on our awesome-o-meters?
Well, Old West stories (and historicals in general) fall a bit more in the latter column for me, but this was Eli Easton, so I had to give it a read.
While Easton's writing was impeccable, as always, and the story was interesting, I'd have much rather been reading a book from her "Howl at the Moon" shifter series, as sci-fi and shifters more easily hold my interest.
Yes, Robbie was subtly-snarky and funny, but the humorous moments weren't quite as frequent as I'd hoped. And Trace and the Crabtree family were fun to meet and grow to care about.
The HEA and the epilogue were also pretty satisfying, but it's 1860, so "out and proud" wasn't really an option for the MC's. Aka, one of the biggest reasons I'm not a fan of historicals.
So, at the end of the day, Old West tales still don't really excite me all that much.
What can I say? I'm the type of nerd who'd much rather watch "Lost in Space" than "The Lone Ranger" any day of the week, and twice on Sunday. :- /
But if you are a fan of this genre, I'm pretty sure you'd enjoy this story.

Sorry, but I do not like this cover. At all. And not only am I shallow enough to allow a bad book cover to ruin my reading experience, but I'm also shameless enough to admit it. I mean, come on! We've got two dudes on what looks like the outskirts of Megaton while the filter makes it look like I’m viewing them from the afterlife, and the guy in front is staring at us with a Jim face. It's weird! Oh yeah, as for the actual book, though? I thought it was vaguely interesting. Kind of zany, kind of fun, kind of a lot of things. Unfortunately, the two main characters didn’t really have any chemistry in my opinion, and their romance seemed more situational than anything that could be sustained long-term, but maybe that’s the point? It's about the journey and not the destination or whatever. Sure, this was good enough to keep me turning the page, but not interesting enough to captivate me. I do think the impending sense of danger is well done, and the plot was smartly woven together, to the point where nothing felt contrived. Overall, a pretty good book.

This story is truly outstanding!
It may not be my favorite m/m *romance* story, because its strongest suit is the comedy factor, but it is definitely a reading experience to behold.
And gosh, it reminded me so much of one of my favorite movies:

Just, you know, set in the Wild West of 1860-something and with real cowboys!
Robby Riverton is a rising star in the New York theater community, hoping to finally make it big on the stage! And he's almost there, his life dream this close to coming true!
One night after the final curtain, he witnesses a murder in the streets and recognizes a famous mafia boss who orders his thugs to silence poor Robby. Too bad his name and face is plastered on posters all over New York, so it's kinda hard for the young actor to go underground in the big city.
Not wanting to get killed, he catches a stagecoach headed West and finds himself travelling alongside a young girl who is on her way to meeting her soon-to-be husband - who 'ordered' her through some agency because he couldn't find a wife in rural Texas.
As fate would have it, Robby finds himself in the place of the "Mail Order Bride", squeezing into the lady's gowns to escape, once the stagecoach wagon arrives in Santa Fe.
Little does Robby know that the bride's future family is waiting right there in Santa Fe to pick up lovely Miss Rowena Fairchild.
Thank God Robby is an actor! He's determined to be the most convincing, worldly and sassy Miss Rowena Fairchild that the Crabtree Farm could hope for! And he realizes that he doesn't have a choice, because the mafia is right there on his heels and it's just due to his disguise that he doesn't get murdered right after exiting the car in Santa Fe.
So he joins the Crabtree family on their trip back to their ranch in the small town of Flat Bottom, where "Rowena" soon learns that the men are downright neanderthals and the women don't have opinions. Worst of all, family patriarch Pa-Pa Crabtree won't allow the women to ever leave the ranch on their own. So Robby is stuck with the rather savage ways of the Crabtree family.
However, one of the brothers, Trace, is the local sheriff of the sleepy town and he also discovers Miss Fairchild's little secret. He considers it his personal duty as sheriff to protect Robby from getting murdered by the New York mafia, but trying not to fall for the handsome actor in drag while they explore their 'similar interests' is a balancing act for the handsome sheriff.
I REALLY liked this story. It was in parts a thriller, in parts a romance and the biggest and best part was clearly the comedy side of having a sophisticated big city actor trying to be a farming girl, convincing a whole family that he was in fact a woman!
And of course, even in the 1860s, a gay man has to show some sense of style!
So while trying to lay low in order not to be killed, Robby does his best to turn the Crabtree household into a modern home where the women dress up fashionably and where men know their table manners and the importance of respecting a lady.
It was hilarious! I loved how Robby turned the ultra-conservative Pa-Pa Crabtree and his family around.
I admit, this is somewhere between an actual historical (butter, they used butter....) and a fantasy story, but if you don't expect pure realism in a story set in the famous 'Wild West', this one is perfect for you!
The romance part is not about cross-dressing, by the way. Rowena Fairchild is just a disguise, they don't get any sexual kicks out of the whole thing. Just in case you're wondering, LOL.
Definitely 5 stars!!

Get on your horse and enjoy the ride of this “Wild, Wild West” romance between Robby and Trace.
First, it’s clever.
Every piece fits together to build the adventure of Robby Riverton, famous actor in New York, with his life crumbling after witnessing a murder, flying to the Wild West and having the idea (good or bad ?!?) to use his acting skills and hide under the identity of Rowena, a “mail-ordered” bride.
Second, it’s hilarious.
Robby is caught into his trick and one thing leading to another, “Rowena” ends up sitting at the table of the “rustic” Crabtree family. The way Robby can wrap everybody around his fingers like no one else ? A piece of art !! Let me tell you, the interaction between Rowena/Robby and the members of the Crabtree clan is an absolute delight.
Finally, it’s sexy and sweet.
Come on, a sexy sheriff – did I mention that Trace is the sheriff and a Crabtree ? - ready to do anything to protect “Rowena” between sexy romp with “Robby” and tender moments, leading us to a swooning HEA…what’s not to like ?

I’m going to try to keep this short because there is multitude of reviews already out there singing this book’s praises!
Per the blurb, Robbie, in a desperate move for self preservation after witnessing a murder, takes on the guise of his traveling companion and impersonates her to be the intended bride of a rancher. When said rancher's brother is the sheriff and quickly works out what’s what, their shared little secret is how Robbie and Trace bond while trying to find the right way to handle Robbie’s predicament.
Being an Easton story, this doesn’t shirk on the feels and relationship dynamics between Robbie and lawman Trace. This was definitely one of her more smexier works, and unlike the anxiety most historicals invoke, this didn’t overly fray my nerves for which I’m quite grateful for.
Narrated by Matthew Shaw, this was my first listening experience of him and it won’t be my last! He did great voice distinction that was really easy on the ears and highly entertaining. Definitely an audio win for me!
Again, if you like Easton and westerns, know that this was a feel good story with plenty of great family dynamics, a good dose of shooting action, and some much appreciated hot loving! A win on all fronts!

This was a complete delight. I have not been reading nearly as much m/m as I used to read for some reason. I’m glad I came across an Eli Easton book to pull me right back in. This has everything we love about this author - it’s a little funny, a little sexy, but mostly just completely charming and fun to read.

Robby Riverton is finally doing well on the New York City stage. Having paid his dues he's ready for his career to only get better. Unfortunately after he witnesses a high-profile murder by a famous, and infamous for killing off witnesses, crime boss Robby has no choice but to go on the run. When he's pursued across the country it's a twist of fate that allows him to disguise himself as the mail order bride of a New Mexico Territories rancher.
He only means to don the disguise for a day or two at most but, like everything about his flight from certain death, his intentions backfire and he finds himself stuck pretending to be a woman.
Years ago I used to really enjoy Julie Garwood, LaVyrle Spencer, and other's historical western romances. I particularly enjoyed the mail order bride plot, so when I found out Eli Easton, one of my favorite M/M Romance writers, was writing one, but as a M/M, well I was all over this like a bear on honey.
I'm so glad Eli Easton decided to write this! Robby Riverton: Mail Order Bride is clever, fun, funny, sexy, and suspenseful. I loved that the dialogue and setting seemed authentic without it ever being too overly descriptive or boring. It's reminded me just why I've always loved this genre/trope.
Personally I really hope this isn't the last we get to see of Robby or the Crabtree family. If you're looking for a captivating page turner I hope you check this out.

Can I first express how much I love this cover? It really captures the atmosphere of the book.
I loved the fact that this played out in the wild west and while I’m normally not a fan of historicals, I'll gladly make an exception for the rugged wild wild west!
Robby is well on his way to become a famous actor. That is until he sees a known criminal murder a man in cold blood one night. Now Robby curses the posters of him all over town with the play he features in. It’s impossible the men didn’t recognize him. He has no choice but to run.
On the wagon train he meets a woman who is supposed to meet her future husband in a town called Flat Bottom. When the woman meets her one true love on the train, Robby decides to take her place as a mail-order bride to escape the men who are looking for him.
Trace is the sheriff of Flat Bottom and when he sees a woman being harassed, he comes to her rescue. When this woman tells him she is the mail-order bride of one Clovis Crabtree, Travis decides to escort her to the family home himself. But some things don’t add up when Trace takes a closer look at the ‘woman’…..
I really liked this. Robby was such a spitfire, he was amazing. And Trace was a regular big bad alpha dude with a heart of gold.
But what really stood out to me in this was how much I loved the fact that Eli Easton made me believe something about the Crabtrees that turned out to be totally wrong. I was fully prepared for Robby to spend time with a hateful, abusive family, I ended up loving all of them.
I do have to admit that I wanted a little more out of the romance. I wanted a little more page time with just Robby and Trace. But that was only a minor niggle, since I loved the rest of the characters so much, it wasn’t a hardship to spend more time with them.
These guys were great together and I loved that there wasn’t a lot of angst about the fact that they were both men in a time that being gay was not acceptable. I liked how they ‘solved’ that issue. I was so happy we got an epilogue where we could see their HEA for ourselves.
Definitely recommended.

Let's play a game. A game called "What the hell was she on three years ago?" because I had to be on expired drugs to give this delightful book three stars when I last read it. There was no review so maybe I gave it three stars accidentally. However, this book deserves all the stars even though just for the enjoyment factor.
The story starts with Robby Riverton: New York Star. After clawing his way from the gutter to the leading man, his life as he knows it stumbles to a halt when he sees something he wasn't supposed to.
On the run, he takes over the identity of a mail order bride who decided to abscond but before he could get away, he ends up having to play his new starring role. Soon you get to see Robby Riverton star in the hit play "Mail Order Bride".
This story was a lot funnier than I remembered and a lot more relatable. Robby is kind, ambitious, adventurous, pragmatic. The way he takes new challenges on the chin and just ploughs through is something many people can appreciate. I did like the subtle variances of having a man play a damsel and a manic pixie dream boy dressed in drag. It breathed some fresh air into an otherwise tired trope.
Easton also had some delightful turn of phrase that made me wonder if I'd wandered into a KJ Charles novel,

The moment felt like a heavy thing, a step out of time, one that couldn't last and was the more precious for it...For a historical romper set in the wild west, I could have used a little more immersion. The best thing about period stories is experiencing the way of life back then second-hand. It doesn't have to be entirely accurate but I should at least leave the media feeling like a could blend in with the crowd back then. (Well, not me me, maybe a white version of me.) But this book isn't about history. It's about Robby running away in terror, finding a home that needs his sunshine and helping them bloom amidst the muck of their existence. There is also mild yearning and I would have liked a few more stakes. Placing the main character in peril in a romance novel is about as believable as the survival of a parent in a Disney movie. All in all, charming good fun.
Long live Robby Riverton.

One entire star off for four uses of the dreadful, icky, overused-in-MM-romances w-verb. It's lazy and it's bad writing.
The story itself sparkles and fizzes with excitement. The murder Robby witnesses in New York City is chilling and makes his terror and his addlepated decision to run away make perfect sense. I'd be terrified and addled as well! Robby's wagon train trip west isn't very detailed but it's got the sense of urgency that a more thorough explanation wouldn't serve. And the real Rowena Fairchild is a major pill, despite her perfect depiction:
Oh my. I can see her. I've known ladies who fit this description to a T. Author Easton makes them appear before my mind's eye.
The way Robby and Trace Crabtree get entangled on Rowena/Robby's arrival in Santa Fe is farcical fun. I loved that they knew right off the other was attracted to their real selves. It makes the sexual tension so much more delicious, like Jack Lemmon finding out Joe E. Brown knew he was in drag all along in Some Like It Hot.
The Crabtree family secret was a little out of left field, but made me laugh out loud when it was discovered by a stunned Robby. Their antics were just so innocent to cause all the angst they did, but I could believe them in this context. I sure as hell would laugh at the Crabtrees for doing what they do.
Robby's ability to talk Pa-Pa Crabtree around in no time flat was a little bit of a stretch but I could see the dramatic need. I know Robby would've talked anyone around in the end, so I went with it. I loved the way Robby dug out the big family secret and made the whole troop of men confront their fears and pain without judgment. That was a lovely touch.

Trace shines in his focused obsessive need to fix what's broken throughout the book. The others' reactions to Trace and Robby after the game is revealed are...well...I don't know, maybe some more conversations around the subject? I was a little left out, it seemed, of the consequences of Robby's deception to the Crabtrees, with the exception of Clovis the defrauded groom.
Also...1860, when the story was ostensibly set, was President Buchanan's term in office. I think the year Trace ran off is more like 1865 or he wouldn't have joined the army as a sharpshooter. Either he fought in the Civil War, at the tail end of it, or joined up and fought in the Plains Wars against the Comanche or Apache that hotted up around 1867. "President Hayes" is mentioned, making the earliest date for the story 1877; all in all, I think 1880 works, and that'd also explain the railroad fever mentioned at the end of the story.
As an experience of storytelling, this was a solid hit for me. I need to escape reality right now. I make no bones about it. Serious and weighty things are happening in the bigger world and in my own stretch of it. My reading needs to soothe me, not challenge me. And this story was just what the escapist ordered.
The story itself sparkles and fizzes with excitement. The murder Robby witnesses in New York City is chilling and makes his terror and his addlepated decision to run away make perfect sense. I'd be terrified and addled as well! Robby's wagon train trip west isn't very detailed but it's got the sense of urgency that a more thorough explanation wouldn't serve. And the real Rowena Fairchild is a major pill, despite her perfect depiction:
She was statuesque, well-bred, and finely dressed. She had light-brown hair that flirted with the idea of being red and a starry sky’s worth of freckles on her nose and cheeks.
Oh my. I can see her. I've known ladies who fit this description to a T. Author Easton makes them appear before my mind's eye.
The way Robby and Trace Crabtree get entangled on Rowena/Robby's arrival in Santa Fe is farcical fun. I loved that they knew right off the other was attracted to their real selves. It makes the sexual tension so much more delicious, like Jack Lemmon finding out Joe E. Brown knew he was in drag all along in Some Like It Hot.
The Crabtree family secret was a little out of left field, but made me laugh out loud when it was discovered by a stunned Robby. Their antics were just so innocent to cause all the angst they did, but I could believe them in this context. I sure as hell would laugh at the Crabtrees for doing what they do.
Robby's ability to talk Pa-Pa Crabtree around in no time flat was a little bit of a stretch but I could see the dramatic need. I know Robby would've talked anyone around in the end, so I went with it. I loved the way Robby dug out the big family secret and made the whole troop of men confront their fears and pain without judgment. That was a lovely touch.

This book is beyond brilliant! Seriously, I just read it in like an hour because I couldn't put it down and just needed to find out what was going to happen to Robby and Trace.
It's Eli Easton at her best imho, hilariously funny at times, tinted with a touch of pathos, rip-roaring adventure and a good old fashioned romance which bursts off the pages and fulfils all those needs for a couple of captivating MCs and a well developed setting.
It's no secret I'm a massive fan of historical romance and the mail-order Western bride is a particular trope often found in the MF romance world so it was such a delight to get this MM twist on the tale and one carried out with such dexterity.
This book is believable even though the premise may seem, on the face of it, to be an unlikely one and I absolutely adored Robby when he was Rowena as she started putting the crazed Crabtree family to rights.
It's straight up Western adventure, High Noon meets Judy Garland in The Harvey Girls (one of my all time favourite musicals!) with a dash of Some Like It Hot and I loved every bit of it.
Robby is such a character, sassy as a man but glorious when forced to hide as Rowena , he soon whips the ungracious boys on the Crabtree ranch into shape as he gets them using napkins, thanking their wives for their efforts and manages to weedle $20 from Pa-Pa for a trip into Flat Bottom to buy fabrics (which was truly one of the funniest things I've read in a long time).
Trace though, oh Trace is everything you'd ever want in a small town Sheriff, tall, self-contained, lethal with both his gun and his smile. When he sees Rowena being harassed by two dodgy men in Santa Fe and steps in to discover she's his brother Clovis' intended bride, well lets just say he also gets more than he was expecting.
He realises fairly sharpish that what's underneath the skirts is something he's very much interested in and the two of them together are both ridiculously hot and seriously sweet at the same time.
The ending and epilogue are awesome and I just read this whole book with a massive smile on my face.

After seeing the fabulous cover and reading all the amazing reviews I just had to read this book.
So I picked it up weeks ago and started reading.
But, it wasn’t working for me I just couldn’t get into it at all. I put it down and tried again a few days later and again a few days after that.
I decided to give it one last chance but a fair chance. And I found myself really enjoying it but it wasn’t the book I expected and maybe that’s where I’d been going wrong.
I didn’t find it particularly funny. Since everyone else did I’m assuming the fault is all mine. Once I’d gotten over the fact that I didn’t find it hilarious I found that I really enjoyed it.
Robby shines as Rowena and the way he manoeuvres Pa Pa is brilliant. Once I’d settled in I really loved this crazy family and of course Trace.
There’s so many brilliant reviews so I’m skipping my usual summary and just saying that the cover is fabulous and the book turned out to be a great read.

What a clever and amusing story! I don't often read historicals, but I could not pass up Robby Riverton: Mail Order Bride. One look at the blurb and I knew I had to give it a shot. Eli Easton has done well with this one!
I loved Robby. He was adventurous, clever, and quite inventive! As an actor, he knew a bit about makeup and disguise, and being slightly built, disguising himself as a woman worked. He could charm anyone and he really needed to put that skill to use when he found himself impersonating Rowena Fairchild -- the mail order bride for Clyde Crabtree's youngest son, Clovis.
The only one who saw through Robby's disguise was Trace Crabtree and that was a blessing, because Trace was sheriff of Flat Bottom and agreed to help Robby evade the thugs that were after him. Trace was the perfect counter to Robby. Trace is steadfast, dependable, methodical. Though he dreamed, when he was younger, of seeing the world, but now he's content to stay in Flat Bottom for the foreseeable future. His family is there, he knows what to expect and there isn't too much going on. Well, until Robby shows up, that is, and turns Trace's world upside down.
Oh, what a tangled web we weave!! I found the story amusing, clever, and so so sexy! I really enjoyed Robby and Trace together. In fact, all of Robby's interactions with the Crabtree family were a joy to experience. The story had a little bit of everything - comedy, drama, suspense, steamy scenes, and a happy ending. Eli Easton knows how to draw her readers into her stories and as soon as I started reading Robby Riverton: Mail Order Bride, I was hard pressed to put it down. It's a pretty light read, so if you're in the mood for something clever and light, you can't go wrong with this one.

What a fun ride! (and sexy, too!) This book is a total winner in the light and fluffy category! And the plot provides a real good amount of tension!
Loved this one for ...
.) Robby: what a fabulous superstar - not only on stage, but this guy has a heart of gold and the courage of a lion! Facing off with Pa Pa is one of the best things ever - I chuckled along all the way! Rowena just rocks!
.) Trace: he sounds ... hmm hot, very hot. And very resigned that he will never have anyone to love. He has a hard time accepting that this might just be possible (I was a bit sad that we didn't get to see why and how he changed his mind in the end!)
.) The Crabtrees: They are hilarious and sad at the same time. Until Robby sorts them out - bless his heart! They remind me of the brothers in the (very ancient XD) musical '7 Brides for 7 Brothers', and seeing them turned round was very satisfying! As for their hobby - now that was really cracking me up!
.) Trace and Robby just gel and it is awesome: the heat, the sexiness, the slow burn of feelings, the use of butter ...
This book made me smile and sigh and happy in so many ways!

This was a really fun read. I adored Robby and his dramatic flare especially the way the behaved with the Crabtree’s. Trace was hooked from the first moment and their relationship slowly progressed from heated glances to eventual rescuing ! Robby had a beautiful impact on the family and I think everyone fell in love- glad Rowena was able to become Robby !

Eli Easton writes some of the most charming romances I’ve ever read and Robby Riverton: Mail Order Bride hits the mark in the best possible way. The connection she creates between her characters is engaging and there’s no end to the interesting situations they find themselves in. Between Eli Easton’s captivating story, and Matthew Shaw’s stunning narration, this is one gosh darn terrific audiobook!
This story takes place in the mid 1800’s and Eli Easton manages to completely capture the mood of the period. The old-timey expressions she digs up are hilarious and add so much to the overall feel of the book. There’s a perfect blend of humor, romance, and action in this one. Fast paced and clever, I enjoyed every minute of Robby Riverton.
I love the delightful and very colorful cast of characters, though they’re all a bit stuck in their slovenly ways. In addition to their appalling manners, they don’t treat their women-folk well at all. As Robby infiltrates the Crabtree family as Rowena, he uses the talents he’s honed on the stage to wrap them all around his little finger. Thankfully they see the error of their ways once Rowena gets up the gumption to insist on some changes.
The attraction between Robby and Trace is immediate, and both men are surprised by its intensity. With everything they have going against them, waiting to see how Eli Easton was going to find a way for them to be together was the sweetest kind of torture. There’s not a ton of sex, but what’s here is raw and hot and incredibly intimate, and I loved watching them fall in love.
Matthew Shaw’s character voices are always creative, and his range never fails to impress me. He has the most wonderful variety for each person in Robby Riverton. Pa-Pa’s craggy cackle, the perfect drawls for the uncouth brothers, and I could listen to Trace’s smokey, sexy, sultry voice all day. The high pitched girly voices he uses for “the gals” and his Rowena voice, are just what I’d think a man would try to emulate, and it was hilarious.
Like all the Eli Easton novels I’ve read, Robby Riverton: Mail Order Bride is a wonderful, feel good story. I think this might just be her best one yet, and delivered with Matthew Shaw’s impeccable narration, it’s a winner!

Well now! That was wonderfully awesome!!
You may detect a hint of surprise and awe in my reaction there, and you’d be correct. Not because I ever doubted the writing prowess of Easton – no way, no how – but because I’ve never really read in the western themed historical romance genre before and I wasn’t really sure if I’d enjoy it.
Thankfully, the end result is one of extreme reader satisfaction. Turns out this whole western trope is totally my thing. After reading Easton’s little author’s note at the end there, suggesting she has plenty more story ideas in this particular genre, I’m more than stoked by the prospect.
I won’t delve into plot details here, mainly because I basically went in knowing nothing but what the awesome title brought to mind, and I feel like that lack of detail worked in my best interests.
I will say that I enjoyed the writing quality (nothing new there) and loved the full cast of characters that filled up the pages of this delightful story. Each and every one of them was memorable and a pleasure to read about. Robby in particular was my absolute favourite, but I certainly loved the way I was slowly sucked in by the other, less immediately likeable, characters.

I liked it, and I can honestly say that I haven't read this storyline a million times before, but it didn't really do anything for me on an emotional level, so 3 stars it is.

That was fun. Robby Riverton is witness to a murder, committed by a very dangerous man. His life isn't worth much, if the killer catches up to him to stop him from testifying. On the run on a stagecoach heading west, Robby manages to take the place of a mail-order bride, using his acting skills to impersonate a woman. Which is fine, until he's trapped in the impersonation, forced to act as Rowena on the farm of his intended husband, brothers, wives, irascible father. And let's not forget Trace, his fiance's other brother, the local sheriff, and the one person who sees through his disguise. And likes what he sees.
There were quite a few improbabilities here, Robbie's ability to keep up the charade in a crowded home full of people only one of them. But it was an entertaining read, and I was willing to overlook many of those issues for the fun of the rest of it. Watching "Rowena" manage her newfound relatives was a blast. Trace's dilemmas were sympathetic. The final action hinged on a melodramatic trope I'm not fond of, but this story was entertaining, with a bit of sweetness and some great moments.

This was cute and fun and quite a bit more suspenseful than I thought it'd be. I do have a couple of quibbles that keeps it from being a full five stars (like why didn't Robby go to the authorities? Other than because the rest of the book needed to happen.) and the ending felt a little too pat and out of character for one of the MCs.
But I really loved all the scenes with Robby and the Crabtrees. They were a mess, and Robby was having none of it. And appearances in at least one aspect were deceiving - for the better. I became fond of all the Crabtrees, especially the women, Clovis and Pa-Pa. Trace and Robby had good chemistry and I actually bought how quickly they fell for each other, but then I find when it comes to stories with a lighter tone like this one it's usually easier for me to roll with the insta.

Gah! I loved this book - I was lucky enough to get a beta read (I am so spoiled!). This is funny, sweet, sexy, serious, dramatic, more funny, and I loved every minute of it. I can't wait for more people to read it so I have people to talk about it to!

Easton is hit or miss for me, I wasn't sure about this and in honesty it was the cover art that reeled me in. The clearly male bride with that wry smirk. Happy to report the book proved a delight.
A light take on a western historical, there's a cattle ranch, a sharp-eyed sheriff, gun fights and bonnets; yet it's layered to add colour without excluding readers who aren't big on historical fiction. It's well balanced there's action, humour and some heat. A 'family secret' is played with through the story, I guessed it but it still amused me no end and added that little extra nuance to the proceedings.
There's no squirm-worthy moments from the disguise and angst is minimum.
Characters are appealing. Robby obviously steals the show, but Trace is attractive and his family interesting; far from perfect yet sympathetic, it would be hard not to like them all by the end. Liked the fact Trace was the brother rather than the intended. Some side characters; the brothers, their wives were a bit interchangeable, they had enough personality to be present without commanding a spot light so not a true negative.
I'd have loved to see a little more Clovis towards the end, if an outtake fic appeared I'd snap it up!
And I did wonder about the constant bonnet wearing including to dine - but I'm not generally a reader of historicals so not up on fancy manners.

I really really enjoyed this book.
I loved watching everything unfold. Loved Rowena getting them Grabree boys in line!
By the end of this book I even loved Pa Pa!
There isn’t much to say as I’m really in a lazy mood. But read this! It’s really worth it!
The only reason I didn’t give it a 5 is because I wanted the ending to be different. Not that there is anything wrong with the ending!
I just wanted it MY way and it didn’t end MY way. Come to think of it, that’s maybe a good thing. I’m not sure.

I really really enjoyed this book.
I loved watching everything unfold. Loved Rowena getting them Grabree boys in line!
By the end of this book I even loved Pa Pa!
There isn’t much to say as I’m really in a lazy mood. But read this! It’s really worth it!
The only reason I didn’t give it a 5 is because I wanted the ending to be different. Not that there is anything wrong with the ending!
I just wanted it MY way and it didn’t end MY way. Come to think of it, that’s maybe a good thing. I’m not sure.

Robby Riverton, a New York City stage actor becomes an eyewitness of a murder done by a dangerous gang. To avoid being the next dead body, Robby decides to run, which lands him at Flat Bottom, Santa Fe. Robby gets to play the role of 'a lifetime' when he has to disguise himself as a woman to fool the gang who has come after him, and pretends to be a mail-order bride.
Taking the western mail order bride trope, Robby Riverton: Mail Order Bride is pretty angst-free entertaining read. I was having so much fun reading Robby taking all the Crabtree family members under his fingers ... the way he works around Pa-Pa, helping the women, and of course making all the Crabtree men presentable. It was CUTE!!
As for the romance between Robby and Sheriff Trace Crabtree... well, it didn't feel very convincing to me *shrugs*. Maybe because it happened pretty fast, and I was more interested with Robby and the other Crabtree family members, so I didn't get the feels I needed of the relationship-build part. I actually skimmed all those sexy times because I wanted to read more about Robby making havoc with the Crabtree family.
