Texas Jewel

Rate this book
Back in west Texas to settle her grandfather's “fantastic inheritance”, Julia Starling, Jewels to her friends, finds herself less than thrilled at the dilapidated house and desolate surrounding environment her grandfather has so graciously left behind. Hitting the local bar with her BFF becomes her first fateful mistake, as the local sexy authority figure warns her against staying, a seedy looking man of Mexican descent offers her a job should she plan to stick around, and the local Native American football legend offers her his own form of attention.

Leaving is the first agenda on Jewels' mind, only coming to the realization that she can't escape what her grandfather left behind for her to deal with, because there are entirely too many ghosts to put to rest. Soon Jewels finds herself propositioned by the local sheriff, married to a husband she doesn't want, and falling into the clutches of the same man who doesn't appear to understand the words “hell no.”

Swirling around the turmoil of her first and only heartache, Jewels finds herself on the adventure of a lifetime, one which refuses to completely release her from it clutches, revealing secrets of her families past and bringing her first initial heartache back around for a second chance.

Texas Jewel (Broken Jewel Book 1)
by Melissa Alexia

Mad western love story with Indians and a sex fest at the end!

The Good
This story is sexy and made me laugh. It reminded me of Universtiy when every boy had a label and not a name. Sex on a stick, Douche Bag.. just loved it!!

The Bad
This reminded me of the middle of nowhere western with the Indian and Sheriff but a lot sexier.

The Ugly
So there is a warning at the end - only read the Clarice Chronicles if you do lots of sex and naughty things. I have to say, I really don't. But because there was a warning I had to read it. OMG!
Oh my! I might be a bit old for that bit -but it had me red hot and wide eyed!

4 Stars - this is a sexy fun romance

There is a reason certain words exist, and this book is the definition of Quirky. Not silly, though it is that at times. Not unbelievable, though any reader must suspend disbelief from the first page to the last. It's both of those and more. Fast-paced and entertaining, with a lovable cast of characters--especially Jewels and Clarice--Texas Jewel is a polished facet of fun. It's not a complete story, hence the Book 1 in the subtitle, but it's more than enough to be a satisfying short read. Which, like Melissa's other work, The Tease, leaves the reader wanting more.

This is a fun little romance/adventure, starting Jewel, a 21-year-old vixen and her hot BFF, Clarise, who get swept up into an unlikely wild west style romp after she inherits the old house and land in West Texas owned by her now-dead grandfather. It turns out that there is a band of Native Americans living on the land and they are worried that they will get expelled unless the hunky leader of the group (Joe) marries the heir (Jewel) to the estate. Well, things get very interesting and very steamy when Jewel and Clarise arrive in town and are immediately on the make for the hot guys, Jewel is confronted by the slimy Mexican drug dealer, while she is trying to be protected by the hot-bodied local Sherriff, while Joe (whom Clarise and Jewel nick-name “sex on a stick” before they know is real name) tries to woo her away.

This is a book that requires a total suspension of disbelief and totally ignore logic and sensibility and just flow along with the romance. Jewel, who is at one point terrified of horses, finds herself fleeing from captivity on a horse, only to find that she needs to stop for the night (even though her trip from town to the location of her captivity had taken only a short time), when she arrives at a cave – in the middle of the Texas desert – where a mysterious stranger invites her to sit and talk about her back-story. It’s like that. Just go with it. Don’t worry that none of the time line make sense or that the characters pop up conveniently whenever needed and how Jewel’s dialogue and confrontation with the bad guys just happens out of nowhere. There are no deep issues, no philosophical points made – it’s just a romance romp in the desert.

Somehow, the author makes us care about Jewel, which is a credit to the writer and the story. Unfortunately, the book ends abruptly with a sudden surprise but no resolution to any of the plot lines. It’s a serial story cliffhanger, so if you want to know what happens, you’ll need to read the next installment. At the very end, the author gives us a little peek at what was happening with Clarise and the hot Sherriff back at the hotel, which is just gratuitous soft-core sex without any real connection to the rest of the story. The author gives the reader the option to skip the steamy scenes, but that doesn’t help resolve any of the unresolved plot.

The book starts out being pretty well written and edited, but there are increasingly numerous editing and language issues as you read along. But, like the plot holes and the deviation from reality, it hardly matters as the story careens along in a fast-paced narrative.

This book is two hours of escapist fun. As long as you don’t mind the unresolved plot and don’t pay too much attention to detail, it’s like watching a movie that is not really that good, but it’s still fun to watch.

This is a short, well written story that packs a lot of punch. Julia “Jewels” Starling is in West Texas to look at the house and property left to her in her grandfather’s will. As it turns out, the house is in terrible shape and is the last place Jewels wants to be. After she decided this house ownership thing is a total disaster, her and her best friend, Clarice, decide to hit up the local bar for a few drinks and check out the local men… or at least that’s Clarice’s plan. Jewels not so much. She is still swooning over the guy back home who broke her heart but agrees to go anyway. While at the bar, the local Sheriff appears and warns Jewels to stay away from the locals and to get out of town as soon as possible.

Jewels is all for leaving town, but the next day ends up getting kidnapped before she gets the chance to depart. Her kidnapper turns out to be one of the guys from the bar the night before, and she cannot believe his reasons and purpose for kidnapping her. The fact that it somehow all ties into her grandfather’s estate and the legacy of the kidnapper’s family is simply unfathomable to Jewels.

The author has a good “voice” which shows throughout this wonderfully crafted story. Although it can be hard to get the reader to care about a story’s characters in a mere 81 pages, that is exactly what happened to me as I read about Jewel’s adventures. I rooted for her, hated the bad guys, and wanted to shout fatherly advice at the pages. That’s how invested I was in what was happening to Jewels and Clarice. This is book one in the Broken Jewel series, and I am looking forward to book two. If you love short stories that are fun, full of flavor, and have the ability to raise your temperature in that good sort of way, then this should be on your reading list. Highly recommended!

Quick and Satisfying Read

This is a great start to something bigger. The author does an excellent job crafting the book-meaning it moves well and invited me in. Some of the transitions were a little choppy, but I enjoyed the action. Folks who appreciate a little less steamy sex will like the warning before the steamy parts, so they can skip them. I would have given it 5 stars, but I hate books that end the story in the middle. This book could easily be part 1 of a 2 or 3 part saga or bigger book. I hope I can stand the wait until the next books are done. Spoiler beyond this point: But I like the fact that I still wonder whether Jewels will end up with Jo Jo or the Big Douche.

Different, maybe unique, but definitely quirky. Jewels inherits some land and a house in Texas from her grandfather. She and her friend, Clarice, drive cross country to check it out.
The story's written in the first person...you are Jewels, and you create a special name for everyone you meet, such as the Big Douche--your ex-boyfriend.
It's a fun read, and you'll have no idea what's going to happen next in this roller-coaster ride. It is book one of multiple series so don't expect a clean ending. As a bonus, you get to read the first couple of chapters of an interrelated series which stars Clarice.
By the last page, you'll be hooked.

From an inherited and ramshackle house, to a seedy bar and hotel, Jewels Starling wanted nothing more than to change the scene unfolding in front of her. But that would be a long time coming.

Her flirty best friend, Native American horse riders, and strangers and drug dealers are also part of the equation. And what’s with the local sheriff?

Then when Jewels is taken against her will, and unknowingly smokes hash to end up in a short-lived marriage, the action doesn’t stop there!

What else could possibly go wrong? Check it out for yourself!

pendulum of emotions

This was a good read. I will say that some of the time shifts were a bit shocking, one minute she is sayingnshe wants nothing to do with Joe the next she is married to him. It was a short read and wven though I know there is a to be continued story I feel like I was missing so much back story. I did really like Joe and I want to know more about his people.

This book shows a lot of promise. The main character is well drawn, but I found it difficult to follow some of the transitions. One minute they were somewhere and she was with someone, then the scene shifts unexpectedly. A good book which could be great with a little more length. I would have given it a four but it ended abruptly without warning in a cliffhanger ending.

Good story

This book is about second changes for Jewel. Going to inherit a fortune is a bit less when she arrives in the town where her grandfathers dilapidated house sits. From one missed opportunity to another Jewel hopes it will ends good. A good story.
