A good history of the city from its legendary founding through to the unification of Italy. What it fun ti read was that it was written by a British noblewoman in the 1890s, giving the book a unique flavor and perspective. As always, a single book covering a thousand years of history can't have any real depth, but you do get a good overview of the history of La Serenissima Repubblica.
