The False Mirror by Dana V. Moison is the second in the Sharon Davis detective series, but it works good as a standalone!

What it's about: NYPD homicide detective Sharon Davis is back investigating the death of an escort girl that had some very high profile clients. The death looks like a drug overdose gone wrong, but is it possible she was murdered? At the same time in Oklahoma, sixteen-year-old Becky's life is ripped apart when she comes home to a missing father, a brother who has been shot, and a dead mother. She makes her way to New York where she believes the grandmother she has never met is living. Becky and Sharon's lives will intersect in the most interesting ways in this fast-paced novel that is a bit romance and full on detective fiction.

As I said earlier, this is the second book to a series, but it does completely fine as a standalone. I have not read Dark Illusion which is the first book in the series, but I had no issues understanding what was going on. There are a handful of references to the detective's first case, but nothing that gave it away for me so if you started with book 2 and went back you shouldn't have a problem.

I loved how fast-paced this book is, and I read it in just over 3 hours so this can obviously be read in one sitting. There is a lot of action, and the romance wasn't overwhelming which is something I really appreciated since it didn't overpower the mystery. I thought the way that Moison tied the two stories together (Sharon and Becky) was pretty genius and it made The False Mirror even more interesting. There is a tiny bit of gore so if you are squeamish at all you might have to skip a couple parts, but it wasn't anything too crazy.

Really the only thing that brought the rating down for me was I thought overall the book was a bit wordy, and also overly descriptive when it came to describing characters. I kept reading how beautiful Sharon Davis is and it did start to get a bit old. Other than that, I was glad how descriptive everything else was because it really set the scene for me, and the complexity of the story really kept me going. There was even a shocking ending that I totally wasn't expecting.

Final Thought: I love detective fiction and if you do too (along with a dash of romance) I would definitely recommend checking out The False Mirror. There is even some material about art which I really enjoyed. I finished around 1 AM and had to look up the artist Moison talked about and it was completely fascinating. Bottom line, yes I DO recommend this book!

Thank you to the author for my free copy!

This is my first book from Sharon Davis Chronicles. Man, was it worth the read. Love the mystery, the intenseness of what's going to happen next. How she brings everything together. She brought to life the side characters as well as the main ones. I felt the emotions of the family and all the people involved.

She was able to solve two different investigations and you didn't feel confused at all. You knew what and where for each. She has a great plot, storyline and a well-done environment. You could feel yourself walking the streets of NY on the case with her.

What a great mystery!! The first scene definitely catches the reader attention. A young girl receives a package with her father’s ring finger in a box with spots of his blood on the paper surrounding the finger. The sender threatens to send a finger a day until he gets what is his. Then the book switches to a happier time with a family living in Fairland, Oklahoma. The family is sitting down getting ready to eat dinner, when the front door is kicked in, and Max’s wife is shot in the head. The man goes into the kitchen where the son, Brandon, is and a shot rings out. Max is told that since he ruined this man’s family, he will ruin Max’s. Who is man? Why does he feel like he needs to execute vengeance? The daughter, Becky, was visiting a friends house, and later finds her mother murdered, brother barely hanging on, and her father missing. She is able to reach her Uncle Jake. He tries to help her through her grief. Uncle Jake isn’t who she thinks he is. Becky finds all kinds of conflicting pictures about her family that she doesn’t understand. Her Uncle Jake finally has to relent and tell her what the truth is. The entire family was in a Witness Protection Program. And Uncle Jake is really Jacob Stanton, U.S. Marshall’s Service. His job has been to protect the family, while they were in the Witness Protection Program. So who is Becky really? Is she a Mitchell or a Webber? Becky finds an envelope with her grandmothers address in New York. She sets out to find out what her family history is and to meet her grandmother. Of course Jacob is livid, because he knows she is in danger. While in New York with her grandmother, Becky receives the package with her father’s finger in it. Detective Sharon Davis of the NYPD, is called in to help Becky and her grandmother find her father. The man who is taunting her is Ray Helborgen, head of one of the largest mafia crime families in the country. Sharon sets out to find a way to locate Becky’s father, along with the help of Jacob. What is it that Helborgen wants returned to him? How is Becky’s father, Max involved with this man? Why did the family have to go into Witness Protection? Will Sharon and Jacob be able to find Max intact? Will they be able to keep Becky and her grandmother safe from this madman? I throughly enjoyed this book, as there were two evolving mysteries within the plot; one involving a mafia connection, and one involving a murdered escort with a “Little Black Book.” I liked the way the author painted vivid pictures of each character, so the reader could relate, even in the unsavory parts of the book. I enjoyed the tenacity of Sharon Davis, and her “can do” attitude. She was always looking for a way to ensure the safety of the family, as well as to solve both cases. If you enjoy mystery, intrigue, mafia corruption, and a beautiful, but tenacious detective, who is all about business, you will love this book. I look forward to the next book. Can’t wait to find out what Detective Sharon Davis gets herself into next!!

A relatively “lite” police thriller, in the best way possible. The story takes place in the US and starts with a normal family, everyone annoying everyone, everyone complains about everything, and then something happens, something that changes everything, reveals new and old facts to the family members, and the tension is light and not overly complex.

The reader doesn’t have to remember too many characters or hints, the characters in the book are doing a great job for the reader in short and very clear chapters. The format of the shorts episodes is very nice for those who like to "steal" chapters in between and have no time to read nonstop but also for those looking for a light book to finish in a day / night / long flight.

I don't want to elaborate too much on the plot, so I won’t spoil it for other readers, because what I love in thrillers like this is finding out, as I read, what is the riddle (or riddles), what possible solutions are out there and how can I get to the solution. I'll just say that the female characters in the book make you fall in love with them, and maybe a bit wanna be them. I found the male characters in the book less "attractive" and they mainly felt like plot hooks.

There were a few sub-plots that I did not quite understand why they were in the book, but I just want to believe they're a trailer for a future book, where Moison will deepen them.

‘Welcome to hell. It only takes a moment for your life to fall apart.’

Israeli author Dana V. Moison earned her degree in psychology from the Open University after completing her military service as a psycho-technical diagnostician. Dana worked as one of the youngest columnists for Ynet, the #1 news website in Israel. She earned her Masters degree in gender studies program at Tel Aviv University. The much-lauded DARK ILLUSION was her debut novel in Hebrew and now publishes THE FALSE MIRROR as her second thriller novel in both Hebrew and English. The heroine of each book is Sharon Davis, fearless NYPD homicide detective.

Dana knows her second home – New York City - well and also shows a fine sensitivity to creating mood, even in the short Prologue – ‘September 15, 2013. Brooklyn, New York The young girl stared with a terrified gaze at the package in her hands. And with those hands, now trembling, she nervously untied the string laced around it. When she finally got the cardboard box open and realized what was inside, she shrieked in horror. An amputated, bloody finger lay at the bottom. The familiar wedding ring still embracing it. Next to it, a white envelope flecked with tiny red stains. It took several minutes until the girl managed to reach out her hand. She took out the note and started reading: Remember how Daddy taught you counting to ten with his fingers? Well, not anymore! And every day, he’ll have one less. Nine days to go . . .‘ A very fine setup for the thriller to follow.

Dana provides a solid synopsis – ‘Beautiful and tenacious NYPD homicide detective, Sharon Davis, investigates the unexplained death of a notorious escort girl who catered primarily to New York’s elite. Many high-ranking officials want her to close the case and quit snooping around, but Sharon knows there’s more to this than meets the eye. In the middle of the high-profile case, she meets sixteen-year-old Becky who desperately needs her help. Becky’s entire world crumbles overnight when she discovers she is the sole survivor of the horrendous assassination of her family. She turns to the help of her Uncle Jake but learns he isn’t who he has claimed to be…Love and passion, witty dialogue, and sharp humor lead to questions with surprising answers. Becky must leave her peaceful hometown and search for clues about her about her mysterious past in New York City, where she crosses paths with the famous detective. Supposedly, two different mysteries with two different solutions. Is that so? The questions keep piling up: Who stands behind the ruthless vendetta against Becky’s family? How will Sharon’s chase after a sadistic killer turn out? And what will happen between her and the rugged marshal who has found himself in the middle of her investigation?’

Writing of this quality is refreshing to discover. It appears that Dana V Moisin ha a solid career: hopefully she will continue this successful series.

Nice crime drama with good characters. There were two stories running parallel in this book for several chapters until the story lines collided with interesting twists and turns.

A book that sweeps you from the first moment and just can not stop reading!

The story is fascinating, the dialogues are witty and the characters are real and emotional. There are two love stories that give a touch of lightness and romance to an excellent tension plot.

A false mirror combines two parallel stories: one by Becky, a young girl whose world was destroyed overnight by a shocking murder of her family, And following it she reveals that her whole life is based on a lie. The second story is the investigation into the murder of a well-known prostitute, who just before her death published a story that upset the New York elite. The mystery of the murder is being investigated by Detective Sharon Davis, who is proving herself to be a sharp and resourceful researcher. When Becky arrives in New York following exciting revelations about her family past, the stories intersect in a network of surprising events and become one piece.

As in Moison's first book, Dark Illusion, here too the element of surprise appears towards the unexpected end !!!

I really enjoyed the book!

Excellent mystery with violence and gore. Warning below.

This is an enjoyable mystery with moderate suspense, police procedural elements and romance. I read this as a stand-alone, but I agree with another reviewer’s unfavorable comments about the author’s distracting in-story links to an earlier book.
There are two intertwining stories: 1) NYPD Detective Sharon Davis hunts for the murderer of a high-priced prostitute, and )16 yr-old Becky Mitchell flies from Oklahoma to NYC on a desperate search for a grandma she never knew she had.
US Marshal Jacob Stanton follows Becky to NYC, but he doesn’t ask marshals there to protect Becky. Her murdered mother, missing father and critically injured brother were relocated from NYC.

The “beautiful” (author’s go-to word) Sharon has an almost-fiancé, but she’s seen at public events with a handsome multi-millionaire. Then she’s tempted by the US Marshal. The storyline needs the multi-millionaire—an art connoisseur and Magritte collector—for his art and jewelry “expertise.” The US marshal was a unnecessary distraction, and Sharon’s tingles could easily have been omitted.

I enjoyed the well-developed characters, but I was drawn to Emily Mitchell, Becky’s artist mother, who hung a Magritte in her living room. Oddly, no one—not even law enforcement personnel—is curious about how/when/where Emily acquired that painting, which is worth 2-3 million dollars. The Magritte-collecting millionaire and his art authenticator do not mention its provenance. It’s probably just my druthers, because Magritte is a favorite, and I’ve seen Magritte exhibitions at MoMA in NYC and at SFMOMA

Warning: shooting murders, kidnapping, explicit torture—including cutting off fingers.

I read this book a few weeks ago now but want to give credit where it is due !

This is a pacy novel with good twists, it was almost like having my children as teenagers again, I'm a grandparent now! The characters are credible and well developed illustrated by speech and humour and by actions suited to their ages.

I love the self talk of proposals for action and its absence when the teens are plotting, great use of cell phones!

This was my first book by Dana, gifted me by Voracious Readers in return for a review, this is my third attempt folks! This novel made an impact on me, how would you feel coming home to a murder scene ? Worse discovering your whole life had been a lie, nobody was who you really thought they were?

What a premise for a story, well crafted, quality description more showing than telling, clues lying there waiting to be gathered, red herrings plentiful so beware ! Read this book you'll be hooked, line and sinker ...suitable for young teens or anyone who loves a good read( without being constantly sprayed by bad language and sexually explicit content) this is worth reading !

*Plot briefly*
When sixteen-years-old Becky Mitchell from Oklahoma went to a friend to study together, she never imagined what she will see when she returns home. After getting her first kiss on the way, Becky comes to her home and unlocks the unlocked door. She feels something is wrong. When she opened the door, she realized she was right. A chain of events in the following days makes Becky to wonder about what she knows about her family and she chooses to go to New York to cope with the question marks.
After Sharon Davis, a police officer in the NYPD homicide department, She cracked a complicated murder mystery- she gets a great fame among police headquarters. The commissioner and her platoon commander (and not only them) want her to be the new spokesperson for the police. Nevertheless, a gift in the form of a beautiful policewoman that the media already like doesn't get every day. But just as Sharon insists on solving the murder cases in her own way, she insists on continuing as a detective and not becoming a public relations woman. Now she faces a new challenge: the investigation of the murder of an escort girl who recently published her famous client list, which included, among others, a rich man and the head of the drug division of South Manhattan.
Is Becky able to deal with the information that reveals about her family? Would the danger that threatened her family threaten her life too, even when she is in New York? And how is the investigation of the murder that Sharon is investigating related to the to this?

*Writing and editing*
The writing is very good. Every character in the book has the unique form of speech that is appropriate for her (like harsh speech of criminals). The reading flowed like the wind. The fact that the story is told from the perspective of the writer and not by a character, is an advantage for me. It allows the reader to know about a number of events that happening on the same time and not dependent on the presence of one character in all situations.
The end of the book felt a little striped - there were some issues that were resolved relatively easily and too quickly. It was possible, in my opinion, to continue the book a little further and to expand the discussion of these issues.

*A personal note*
I have learned quite a bit about investigating and deciphering murder cases in the police tv series that I usually see. This is my first choice when I sit down in front of the screen. I began to read "The False Mirror" to free my mind during the exams (there is a limit to the amount of summaries I can read and remember in a week) and I thought that thanks to my watching of those series the reading will be just for fun - but I was wrong.
Not only that I fail to guess how the plot would progress, in contrast to what happens more than once when I watch television series- I remained in suspense and interest around these two major affairs throughout the book. I just mention that on TV the subject usually closes in 40 minutes, and sometimes it's too much.
I do not remember when I last enjoyed this number. I was told that maybe it was because reading was a break from school, but I really do not think so. If the book was not good, I would not finish reading half of it in less than two hours.

After reading "The False Mirror," I thought to borrow from the library the first book starring Detective Davis, "Dark Illusion," after I finish with one of my assignments. But after two days I already was in the library.

Read in one sitting.

This has served to whet my appetite for more from this author. Well written and immensely enjoyable. The main characters were well developed and the hiding place for the money was brilliant. I actually guessed it had something to do with the painting...like a key behind it or where the eye was looking. The author's conclusion was much better. You will have to read the book for the answer.

A well-crafted story that’s fully loaded with love, passion, witty dialogue, and sharp humor...

Author Dana V. Moison weaves an exceptional action and adventure story that will easily captivate the reader’s attention from the beginning. The author paints a compelling and intriguing atmospheric thriller in a very vivid and convincing way. In addition, the characters are drawn with great credibility and conviction. It’s a relatively fast paced novel that will keep you engaged from the first page to the last.
The book description gives a sneak preview: ‘Beautiful and tenacious NYPD homicide detective, Sharon Davis, investigates the unexplained death of a notorious escort girl who catered primarily to New York’s elite. She turns to the help of her Uncle Jake but learns he isn’t who he has claimed to be…
Becky must leave her peaceful hometown and search for clues about her about her mysterious past in New York City, where she crosses paths with the famous detective.
The questions keep piling up: Who stands behind the ruthless vendetta against Becky’s family? How will Sharon’s chase after a sadistic killer turn out? And what will happen between her and the rugged marshal who has found himself in the middle of her investigation?’
Now, if that’s not enough to get your curiosity juices flowing, I don’t know what will. But if you want to find out what happens, you’ll just have to turn the pages for yourself! However, I will say it was well worth the read. It’s my first time reading this author and I must say I was very impressed.

The story had every element a good story should have. An intriguing plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well-illustrated scenes that make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that’s something I really look for in a good book.

Captivating and commendable, this work had me immersed from the beginning. It’s a thrilling fiction fully loaded with love, passion, witty dialogue, and sharp humor. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of attention-grabbing moments in this page turner that will take the reader on a truly compelling and gripping journey!

It’s one of those books that come along occasionally that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader.

If this book is anything to go by, I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from Dana V. Moison in the future. It also has a distinctly cinematic feel to it and I could easily see it being adapted for a made-for-TV movie or even the silver screen. A well-deserved five stars from me.

In The False Mirror, Sharon Davis is a NYPD homicide detective who is tasked to solve the unexplained death of a notorious escort girl who catered to New York’s elite. With many high-ranking officials wanting her to close the case as soon as possible, Sharon is not willing to give up until she finds some answers.

And then she meets Becky, a 16-year-old girl who is the sole survivor of the horrible murder of her family. Desperate to find answers as to who killed her family, Becky turned to New York and crosses paths with Sharon there.

When Sharon finds out both cases might be intertwined, she’s in for her most dangerous hunt yet, on a sadistic, ruthless killer.

This is an intense rollercoaster of a book with many edge-of-your-seat moments, great characters (in particular Sharon, who is downright amazing), a thrilling mystery with lots of twists and turns and great writing.

The False Mirror (Sharon Davis Chronicles Book 2) by Dana V. Moison has a very interesting cover that tells about the depth of this murder mystery that is well gripping right at the moment you start its first page. This is the story of Sharon Davis, one of the most successful detectives in the New York Police Department and her astonishing and intelligent detective skills that ensure her success in every case she takes up in her sleeves. This time the case that she is handling involves many high-profile people of the society and thus gains a high pressure on her to close the case immediately. How she handles this pressure and gets to the core of the case to catch the culprits is quite interesting.

Don't be thrown off by the tag psychological thriller. This book is about family, our sense of self, heritage, values and yes a nasty murderous brute that you will love to hate. I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to spend a quiet afternoon curled up with a great story. I received an advance copy of this book to review. All opinions are my own.
